SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS A preliminary environmental base line water quality survey was

conducted by Better Resources Limited at their Mt. Washington property during the 1984 exploration season.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The Big Group of Mineral Claims are centered on 49O45'30" North latitude and 125O15' west longitude within map sheets N.T.S. 92F/14 and 92F/ll in the Nanaimo Mining Division. The claims are situated 18 kil- ometres northwest of Courtenay, t3.C. and 2.5 kilometres east of the summit of Mt. Washington (see figure 2). They cover two high easterly facing ridges and the intervening Murex Creek Basin.

Access to the claims is facilitated by a network of well maintained paved and gravel mining and logging roads. However, the upper reaches of the Murex Basin must be accessed by foot. Depending on snowfall and runoff conditions, four wheel drive access is usually possible between July and November.

PHYSIOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

Mt. Washington is located along the eastern margin of the northwest trending Vancouver Island Range in the Insular Fold Belt. The local landscape varies from moderate to precipitous. At lower elevations it is mantled by a thick mixture of hemlock, red and yellow cedar, douglas fir and balsam fir. Much of this has been extensively logged and now supports a varying amount of second growth forest. A subalpine forest is developed above 1400 metres. Property elevations range from 520 to 1550 metres. The deeply incised north easterly draining Murex basin is the dominant physical feature on the claim group. Evidence of recent glaciation is exemplified cirque development, glacial striae and thin but pervasive glacial till development.

A preliminary environmental base line water quality study was initiated at Better Resources Limited's Mt. Washington property prior to the commencement of the 1984 exploration programme.

The purpose of this study was to acquire background information regarding water quality of the streams draining the upper reaches of Mt. Washington and to monitor any changes that might occur after commence- ment of work. below the elevation of the lowest anticipated worksite. Samples were collected in one litre white plastic bottles with non- contaminating caps. prior to being filled. Styrofoam cooler and packed with refrigerant prior to shipping.
