Introduction
• A Petri net (PN) is something like a generalized automata.
• A Stochastic Petri Net (SPN) – a stochastic extension toPetri nets, for quantitative analysis.
• More expressive than queueing networks and easier tomodel a wider range of systems.
• Underlying mathematical model : stochastic processes.

Transitions in SPNs
• All transitions ti are associated with a rate λi , possiblymarking dependent.
• A transition becomes enabled when none of its inputplaces is empty.
• When a transition ti becomes enabled, an exponentiallydistributed random variate with parameter λi is generated.
• When a transitions fires, one token is removed from eachinput place, and tokens are put into all of its output places.
• Each allocation of tokens to the places in the SPN iscalled a marking.

How to solve it
SPN - two approaches to get performance measures:
• Analytical - generate a corresponding CTMC and solve it.
• Simulation - When the state space is too large, or when amore advanced model is necessary (general firingdistributions).

SPNs and CTMCs
Fact: SPNs are isomorphic to CTMCs, k-bounded SPNs areisomorphic to finite CTMCs.
• Reachability set RS = RS(M0) - the markings reachablestarting from the initial marking M0.
• The state space of the CTMC (the marking process)corresponds to the RS.
• Home state: ∀M ′ ∈ RS(M0),M ∈ RS(M ′)
• A k-bounded SPN is said to be ergodic if M0 is a homestate.
• ergodic SPN → ergodic CTMC → guaranteed steady statesolution

Obtaining the CTMC
Convert the SPN to a CTMC, where every marking of the SPNcan be associated with a state in the corresponding Markovchain. We get the generator matrix Q by:
qij =
{ ∑tk∈Ej (Mi )
λk(Mi ) i 6= j
−∑
tk∈E(Mi )λk(Mi ) i = j
NB. Mean sojourn time in any marking (why?):
STi =
∑tk∈Ej (Mi )
λk(Mi )

We extend the original SPN model with:
• Immediate transitions – transitions that fire immediately, before any timed transitions. (higher priority)
• Inhibitor arcs. (will be skipped)
Motivation:
• can be used to model purely logical events or events whoseduration is negligible.
• the state space (RS) of the resulting CTMC is reduced(when using an immediate transition instead of a timedtransition).
• We increase modeling power.

GSPN, ctd.
• We will call markings mi ∈ G (tj), where tj is immediate, for vanishing states, and we differ those from the tangiblestates (i.e., when the transition is timed).
• The marking process will no longer be a CTMC, but aSemi-Markov process. (The times between transitionshave two different distributions)
• It is straightforward to find an EMC, from which it ispossible to derive a reduced EMC, with a smaller statespace.

Switching distributionsWhenever two immediate transitions are enabled at the sametime, we require some rule that specifies which transitionshould fire first (possibly marking dependent).
However, there are some subtleties when defining the switchingdistributions of the immediate transitions:The probability measure is only well-defined ifP(t4) = P(t5) = 0, which is probably not what we want.Hence, knowledge of the marking process is necessary whendefining switches.Even worse! Solution: define weights instead (as Bengt said).

Throughput and delay
• We solve the system, and get P(M0),P(M1), P(M2).
• Rate into the subnet (throughput oftransition t1):E (γ) = 2λP(M0) + λP(M1)
• E (N) = E (m4) + E (m2) =P(M1) + P(M2) + P(M2)
• Average delay of one token:
E (T ) =E (N)
E (γ)=
P(M1) + 2P(M2)
2λP(M0) + λP(M1)

Relation with PN
• All structural results obtained from the underlying PN arevalid for the SPN as well.
• Completely deterministic
• PN: Adding inhibitor arcs gives them the same modelingpower as turing machines (they can “mimic” any turingmachine)GSPN: Adding inhibitor arcs does not increase themodeling power. (Haas). In fact, any GSPN with one ormore inhibitor arc can be converted into an equivalentGSPN without inhibitor arcs. (immediate transitions areused)
