1 | NOVEMBER 2010 | www.capitalvia.com U.S. stock index futures were little changed on Friday, the last trading day of the year, with the S&P on track for a yearly advance of nearly 13 percent and its best December performance in nearly two decades. Most Asian stock markets ended the year with solid annual gains and further advances were expected in 2011, but worries about the U.S. economy and Europe's festering debt crisis will keep investors on edge well into the New Year. The euro edged up to a two-week high against the dollar on Friday on year-end buying by central banks, while the Swiss f ranc hovered near a record high against the U.S. currency in thin trade. US MARKET The 30-share BSE SENSEX closed at 20,509.09, up 120.02 points or 0.59% and the 50-share NSE NIFTY rose 32.65 points or 0.54% to settle at 6,134.50. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices went up 1% each. Equity benchmarks closed the last session of the year 2010 on a positive note, led by support f rom financial, Anil Dhirubhai Ambani G roup, realty, telecom, auto, select metal and power companies' shares. Reliance Industries and HUL also led the support. The SENSEX gained for the third consecutive day today and settled above the 20,500 level. In smallcap space, Emami Paper rallied 20%. Nectar Life, N irlon, Shriram EPC and Sundaram-Clayton gained 11-12.5% while Rollatainers, Elpro International, Ushdev Intl, Midfield Industries and Spectacle Info slipped 5-6%. WEEK WRAP Most Asian stocks rose, with the MSCI Asia Pacific excluding Japan Index on course for the seventh annual increase in eight years, after improved U.S. data boosted confidence in the global economic recovery. The Shanghai gauge's advance for a third day narrowed its decline for the year to 15 percent, the worst performer among the 14 largest world benchmark indexes. The Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks the bigger of China's stock exchanges, added 48.5, or 1.8 percent, to 2,808.08 at the 3 p.m. close. The CSI 300 rose 2.1 percent to 3,128.26. The markets will be closed Jan. 3 for the New Year's holiday. ASIAN & EMERGING MARKET A spike in vegetable prices pushed India's food inflation to a 10-week high in the week to December 18. The fuel price index also rose on a rally in global crude prices, increasing the likelihood of another rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). India's foreign exchange reserves rose to $295.031 billion as on Dec. 24 from $294.602 billion in the previous week, the central bank said in its weekly statistical supplement on Friday. These sectors had grown an upward revised 8.6% in October helping industrial growth bounce back to 10.4% for the month from 4.4% in September. Industrial production data for November is expected on January 12.
