Hope Scholarship Changes

Recent news about changes to the state-funded HOPE Scholarship Program may have some families unsure

of the best way to prepare for college. Too often, students cross their fingers and hope they’re ready for

college and are eligible for HOPE. Students need to get the facts about the HOPE changes and know

whether they’re affected, but, more importantly, they need to make sure they’re making good academic

choices now so that they can keep the scholarship once they get it.

GAcollege411.org is a comprehensive site that explains the college process from start to finish and is

highly recommended. Below you will find links to federal financial aid information, government resources,

large scholarship search engines, military programs, and how to plan for education costs at any age.

A Better Chance: Since its finding in 1963, the mission of this organization has rested in a single goal; to

substantially increase the number of well-educated students of color who are capable of assuming positions

of responsibility and leadership in American Society. A Better Chance works with students of color in sixth

grade through college to help them gain access to broader educational and career opportunities. Application

AES Engineering Scholarships: Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum

of fields of study and are awarded based on character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is

demonstrated through leadership in school, civic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and

motivation to serve and succeed. Students must submit an essay of no more than 500 words explaining how

they are fulfilling the criteria mentioned above. Submit essay to: [email protected].

Application deadline is September 1, 2006.

Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired: The Alexander Graham Bell

Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) offers several scholarships for undergraduate and

graduate study for the 2007-2008 academic year. For more information about this award and scholarship

Alice Dodd Memorial Scholarship: The Georgia District Civitan Foundation created the Alice Dodd

Scholarship for Outstanding Community Service to honor the late Alice Dodd. Ms. Dodd was the wife of

the late Bobby Dodd, the famous head football coach at Georgia Tech. This scholarship commemorates her

many years of dedication to community service and her genuine love and concern for other people.

Applications are available in the Counseling Office. The application deadline is January 16, 2008.

All-Ink.Com College Scholarship Program: The All-Ink.com College Scholarship Program is available

to students who are enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited college or university with a minimum 2.5

GPA. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to be considered for this award. To apply for this

scholarship, you must submit a 50- to 200-word essay on who has had the greatest impact on your life, and

a 50- to 200-word essay on what you hope to achieve in your personal and professional life after college.

ALLTEL Wireless Words of Wisdom Essay Contest: The Words of Wisdom essay contest is open to

current and prospective students of America's participating black colleges and universities. Essays must be

600-800 words and must be the original work of the submitting author. Contest begins January 29th and

ends March 4th, 2007. Contestants have until midnight on March 4th to submit their essays. Please visit

Alpha Iota Delta of Chi Psi: In memory of our beloved Brother Stamps Bethel, several scholarships of one

thousand each are offered annually to qualified incoming freshmen men at the Georgia Institute of

Technology. The recipients will be those applicants who best exemplify the ideals of the fraternity

intellectually, morally, and socially. Semifinalists will be required to attend an interview at a time and place

to be announced. Winners will be announced from the remaining finalists at an awards banquet in August

on the Georgia Tech campus. Application deadline is April 15, 2007.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc – Psi Alpha Omega: Several academic scholarships will be awarded to

graduating African American students in the Clayton and Henry County areas. Qualified applicants must

have a 2.5 GPA and plan to attend a career and technical school, college, or university. Application

deadline is February 28, 2008. Applications are available in the Counseling Office.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority – Xi Beta Omega Chapter: This scholarship is open to all high school

seniors planning to enroll in an accredited institution of higher learning for the purpose of obtaining a

certificate, associate degree, bachelor’s degree or the equivalent, or more. Applications are available in the

Counseling Office. The application deadline is March 15, 2007.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. South Metro Atlanta Scholarship: This scholarship opportunity is

open to African-American male graduating seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater; extracurricular

activities; and acceptance and attendance at an accredited institution of higher education for the fall of

2007. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Application deadline is April 30, 2007.

American Cancer Society College Scholarship: First year recipients may receive $1,000 and college

scholarship renewals may be awarded in the amount of $500 with a maximum scholarship amount to one

student of $2,500. To receive an application please call 1-800-ACS-2345, e-mail [email protected].

college and is the survivor of childhood cancer. Must be a legal resident of GA, DE, MD, NC, SC, WV or

American Society of Military Comptrollers: The Greater Atlanta Chapter of ASMC, located at Fort

McPherson, GA will offer a $1, 000 scholarship to an outstanding graduating high school senior planning

to pursue a baccalaureate degree in a field directly related to financial/resource management. This includes

Business Administration/Accounting/Public Administration/Auditing/Math/Computer Science/, and

Economics. The scholarship application is available online at

Andrew College: Academic Scholarship Competition will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2008.

A. Patrick Charnon Memorial Scholarship: The A. Patrick Charnon Scholarship is open to full-time

undergraduate students who have been accepted to or who are currently enrolled in a four-year college or

university. Students who value tolerance, compassion and respect for all people in their communities, and

who have demonstrate their commitments to theses values by their actions will be considered for this

award. In addition to an official transcript and three letters of recommendation, you must submit a typed 2-

4 page essay on how community service experiences have shaped your life and how you will use your

college education to build communities in a manner consistent with Pat Charnon's values of compassion,

tolerance, generosity and respect. For more information about this scholarship opportunity or to download

Apple Scholars Program: The Apple Scholars Program is sponsored by Apple, Inc. The purpose of this

program is to provide college-bound students with technology and scholarship money to assist them in

using Apple products in innovative ways in their academic pursuits. The program begins on Monday,

April 2, 2007 and ends on Wednesday, May 15, 2007, or when 40,000 application submissions are

received: first come, first serve. Applicants must complete the application found at

Arkansas Alumni Association Scholarship: The Arkansas Alumni Association is inviting high school

seniors who are planning to attend the University of Arkansas to apply for merit based scholarships for the

2007-2008 academic school year. The Association sponsors three types of scholarships which are available

to high school seniors who have been admitted to the University of Arkansas. The application can be

downloaded at www.arkalum.org./scholarships. Only complete applications will be considered and

must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2007.

Army Scholar Athlete: Scholar athletes are selected by their high school administrators. The Army

Reserve sends and official selection form to the school counselor. The counselor is encouraged to consult

with the principal and athletic director to select students who will receive this award. Official selection

forms must be postmarked by May 30. Please see Mrs. Hodge for additional information.

Art Institute Guide to Scholarships: When you apply to The Art Institute of your choice, you should also

Atlanta Jamaican Association (AJA): Each candidate is required to submit an application as well as an

essay on a selected topic of relevance to Jamaica. Essays will be scored by an independent panel of judges,

which includes college professors and high school educators in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.

Subsequently, those essays receiving the most meritorious scores will be invited to a face-to-face interview

with members of AJA Educational Committee. The application, agreement, transcript, and essay should be

mailed no later than May 15, 2007.

Atlanta Southern Crescent Alumnae Panhellenic Association Scholarship: Must be a female high

school student and resident of the Southern Crescent area of Atlanta who will attend an accredited four-

year college in the fall of the forthcoming year. “Southern Crescent” is defined as the counties of Clayton,

Fayette, Coweta, Henry, Spalding, and the cities of South Fulton County. Applicants must submit an

application along with attachments specified on the application. Get an application from your counselor or

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship will award up to $725, 000 in scholarships this year to

graduating high school seniors across the country. Previous scholarship winners are known as AXA

Achievers who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive and determination, respect for self, family

and community, and the ability to succeed in college. The deadline for the 2008 AXA Achievement

Best Buy Scholarship: This scholarship is available to current high school seniors who plan to enroll in a

full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four year college or university or vocational

technical school in the Unites States no later than fall 2008. Students must demonstrate commitment to and

involvement in volunteer community service. Selection of recipients will be based on solid academic

performance and exemplary community service with consideration also given to participation and

leadership in school activities and work experience. Financial need is not considered. Application deadline

Blacks at Microsoft African American Heritage Scholarship (BAM): The mission of BAM is to

encourage and enable Black high school students to (a) go to college, (b) realize the impact technology has

on the world, and (c) target a career in the technology industry. The amount of the BAM Scholarship to be

awarded is $2500 annually, which is paid through the Seattle Foundation on behalf of BAM to the

recipient’s school’s Financial Aid Office. Applicants must be a current high school senior of African

decent; plan on attending a four year college or university in the fall of 2007; declare a major in

engineering, computer science, or computer information systems, or declare a major in business that is

approved by BAM; demonstrate a passion for technology; demonstrate leadership – either in school or in

the community; have a GPA of 3.2; and require financial assistance. Application deadline is March 30,

2007. Applications are available in the Counseling Office.

Blogging for Progressive Scholarship: This scholarship opportunity is available to students who are age

16 or older as of October 15, 2007, and will be attending a regionally or nationally accredited college,

university or vocational school during the 2008 or 2009 calendar years. You must create a blog and write

about current events, public policy, and issues affecting young people. Winners are selected based on

accumulation of participation points. Application deadline is October 15, 2007. For more information

Bobby Dodd Memorial Scholarship: The Georgia District Civitan Foundation created the Bobby Dodd

Boston University offers several different scholarship opportunities including: the Trustee, Dr. Martin

Luther King, Jr., Alexander Graham Bell, and School of Education Presidential Scholarships. These four-

year, full-tuition scholarships are awarded to students with the most noteworthy academic

accomplishments, who have graduated at the top of their classes, and who have demonstrated outstanding

leadership ability. All scholarship application instructions, recommendation forms, nomination forms and

Brewton-Parker College offers various financial aid possibilities including HOPE, Federal Pell Grant,

athletic scholarships, ministry scholarships, music scholarships, academic scholarships, and many others.

Burger King Scholars: This program awards $1000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors

planning on furthering their education at a college or post secondary vocational/technical school.

Eligibility: Must have a GPA 2.5 or higher; Must work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40

weeks per year; Demonstrate participation in community service and/or co-curricular activities;

Demonstrate financial need; Receive recommendation; Plan to enroll in an accredited two or four year

college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall of application year. Applications can be

February 15, 2008.

Business Community Scholarship: This scholarship award will be awarded to a graduating senior

planning to pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree in a business-related field at a technical school,

college, or university in Georgia. Eligibility – Must be in good academic standing; Must have completed at

least three vocational classes; Must have been in attendance at SHS the first day of this school year. A

completed application along with a copy of your official high school transcript is required for this

scholarship.

Call Me Mister: Several black colleges are looking for future black male teachers and will send them to

universities/colleges for 4 years free. The “Call Me Mister” program is an effort to address the critical

shortage of African American male teachers particularly among South Carolina’s lowest performing public

schools. Program participants are selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged

and educationally at-risk communities. The program is collaboration between Clemson University and four

historically black colleges in South Carolina: Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College, and

Casey Family Scholars Scholarship: It provides scholarships of up to $10,000 to young people, under the

age of 25, who have spent at least 12 months in foster care and were not subsequently adopted. The

scholarships are awarded for the pursuit of post-secondary education, including vocational/technical

training, and are renewable each year based on satisfactory progress and financial need. Applications for

the 2008-2009 scholarships will be made available online at http://www.orphan.org from January 1

through March 31, 2008.

Cheryl R. Walker Fine Arts Scholarship: Applicant must have exemplified evidence of sincere interest

and ability to perform in the area of fine arts; must be enrolled in a public, private, vocational, or school for

higher learning; must complete an application and provide two letter of recommendation. Applications are

available in the Counseling Office. Scholarship application deadline is March 1, 2008.

City of Stockbridge: This scholarship award will be awarded to a graduating senior planning to pursue an

associate or bachelor’s degree in a business-related field at a technical school, college, or university in

Georgia. Eligibility – Must be in good academic standing; Must have completed at least three vocational

classes; Must have been in attendance at SHS the first day of this school year; Must live in the city of

Stockbridge. A completed application, adequate proof of residency, along with a copy of your official high

school transcript is required for this scholarship.

College Toolkit Scholarship: A $10,000 Scholarship for tuition and college expenses is available at

www.CollegeToolkit.com/10000. College Toolkit is searching for the best college admissions essays out

there. To enter, submit an essay that you used on a college application. If you haven't yet applied for

college or did not need to write an essay for your application, then write an answer to the question "Why do

you want to go to college? Application deadline is July 31, 2007.

CSU Servant Leadership Program: This program provides students with learning experiences that create

Coca Cola Scholars Program: This scholarship will be awarded to current high school or home-school

seniors anticipating graduation from a school or program in the United States during the academic year in

which application is made; Must be a U.S. Citizen; U.S. National; U.S. Permanent Resident; Temporary

Resident (legalization program); Refugee; Asylee; Cuban-Haitian Entrant; or Humanitarian Parolee

planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution; Must have a minimum 3.00

GPA at the end of your junior year of high school. High school seniors, who have not yet graduated, must

submit initial applications between September and October 31 of his/her senior year in high school.

College Prowler and Wachovia Scholarship: Have partnered to bring students an opportunity to win

$1,000 scholarships monthly. Students will be awarded scholarships based on the best college application

essay. All your student has to do is submit an essay they used for any college application to the College

Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program: One time awards of $1500 will be made to 100 high

school seniors who plan to pursue a career in an agriculture-related field. Applications are available at

www.monsanto.com or www.nafb.com. All applications must be submitted no later than February 15,

2007.

Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Inc: Each scholarship has its own specific purpose and

eligibility criteria. Scholarships are managed with varying degrees of involvement by the Foundation's

Education Advisory Committee and staff. Scholarships allow donors to invest in the future by helping

deserving students pursue higher education. For more information and to download applications go to

Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Scholarship: This program was established in response to federal

cuts in spending for education programs and scholarships. All applications are available at

www.cbcfinc.org. Eligibility requirements: Must be a high senior who intend to pursue an undergraduate

degree full-time or current full-time student in good academic standing at an accredited college or

university; Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5; Exhibit leadership ability and participate in community

service activites; Must reside in or attend a college/university in a congressional district represented by a

CBC member. Application deadline is May 1 of each calendar year.

Connecticut School of Broadcasting: Every semester, CSB offers full-tuition scholarships to a few

talented high school students. All you have to do to be considered is send an audio or visual demo tape. It

could be a demonstration of your on-air potential, your editing and mixing skills, or an idea for a sports

entertainment program. You’ll find full details, rules, and an entry form at GoCSB.com.

Danforth Scholars Program at Washington University is seeking nominations for the William H. and

Elizabeth G. Danforth Scholars Program. They are seeking candidates who have exhibited a capacity for

service and leadership, as well as academic excellence, and who will embrace the challenges of a rigorous

academic curriculum. They are specifically interested in students who stand out amongst their peers for

their maturity, strong moral character, selflessness, and commitment to community – qualities which

embody the essence of the Danforths. If you would like to be nominated for this opportunity, please see

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Henry Co. Alumnae Chapter Scholarship: This scholarship

opportunity is available to a graduating high school senior with a minimum 2.75 GPA attending a private or

public Henry County school. Scholarships will be awarded upon acceptance and enrollment in a 2 or 4 year

accredited college or university. A complete application packet must be mailed together in the same

envelope and postmarked by February 11, 2008. Applications are available in the Counseling Office.

DeVry University $10 Million Scholarship Program: This program includes a Presidential, 2 full-tuition

awards valued at over $64,000 each, Dean's, valued up to $13,500 ($1,500 per term) merit scholarships,

and Community Scholar Awards at $1,000 per term scholarships for each deserving student. For more

information visit www.devry.scholarships or call 800-295-8694. Deadlines vary from March 10, 2006 to

within one year of high school graduation. Application deadline is May 25, 2006.

Duck Brand Duct Tape Scholarship Contest: This contest is sticking around! Duck Brand Duct Tape

Stuck at Prom Scholarship contest will award one high school couple with $6000. Additional information is

East Tennessee State University Honors Program: The University Honors Scholars Program offers a

specially designed curriculum taught by exceptional faculty. This four-year program provides full

scholarship support and the atmosphere of a small liberal arts college. Your degree is not limited, but you

will share a special curriculum with your class. This program requires a special and early application. If

E. B. Kennedy Scholarship: Nationally recognized, the E.B. Kennedy Scholarship program is one of the

finest scholarships in the country. Recipients are awarded a scholarship that covers tuition, room, board,

usual fees, and in renewable for a total of four years. The E.B. Kennedy Scholarship is based solely on

merit. E.B. Kennery Scholars must excel in four areas: Christian commitment, scholastic achievement,

vigorous outlook, and leadership potential. Students, you must be nominated for this scholarship

Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation: This scholarship was established in 1968 as a

counter-part of the well-known publication, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, which

recognizes exemplary students from across the nation. This year a minimum of 61 scholarships will be

Emory University Advantage: This is a new financial aid program which makes the cost of a private

college education more affordable. Emory University plans to reduce debt burden for families with annual

Engineering Scholarship: Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields

of study and are awarded based on character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is demonstrated

Federal Employee Education Fund: The FEEA Scholarship program is sponsored in part by the Blue

Frank O’Neill Memorial Scholarship: The 2006 Frank O'Neill Memorial Scholarship is available to

Furman College: Wylie Scholarships in Mathematics are awarded to incoming freshmen that have

demonstrated outstanding mathematical ability and an interest in pursuing the study of mathematics in

specific academic requirements and on participation in Furman's mathematics program. To be eligible for a

Wylie Scholarship, a student must have a combined SAT score of at least 1350 or an ACT score of at least

Gates Millennium Scholars: The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill &

Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American

Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an

opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, in all discipline areas and a graduate

education for those students pursuing studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library

GEMC Walter Harrison Scholarship: This program is a statewide scholarship competition sponsored by

residence is the household of a Snapping Shoals EMC member (electric customer) or a Snapping Shoals

General Motors Minority Dealers Association Scholarship Program: This scholarship program

recognizes outstanding minority high school and college students. Scholarship applications are available at

participating GM dealerships as well as in the Counseling Office. A limited number of $2500 scholarships

are available to current college students, and to high school seniors who will begin college in fall 2008. All

applications must be postmarked no later than November 16, 2007.

Georgia Development Authority Scholarship: This scholarship is in the amount of $1250 awarded

annually to a Georgia rural student enrolled in the study of agriculture or an agriculture related field.

Consideration for the scholarship will be based 80% on financial need. Each application must be

accompanied by three letters of recommendation, handwritten essay, high school transcript, SAT scores,

and all other financial aid received. Application deadline is June 1, 2006.

Georgia Electronic Life & Safety Systems Association NBFAA Scholarship Program: This scholarship

opportunity is for sons and daughters of active-duty police and fire service personnel through the Shorty N.

Cogland Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship awards in the amount of $1500 for first prize, $1000

for second prize, and $500 for third prize and are available to all qualified high school seniors. Another

exciting part of this scholarship is that two winners from our state are eligible for the national scholarship

Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation: The John, Lynne and Nicole Belli Endowment Memorial

Scholarship Program provides tuition assistance for students who are planning to attend or who are

currently attending accredited universities, colleges, and technical colleges. Scholarships in the amount of

$2500 are awarded based upon demonstrated need and personal achievement and character. Award

disbursements will be made directly to the recipient’s institution of higher learning. Recipients are eligible

to apply for funding for consecutive years as long as a GPA of 2.5 is maintained and/or school standards

are satisfactorily met. The decision of the Scholarship Committee, as approved by the Georgia Firefighters

Georgia Institute of Technology, Tech Promise: Georgia Institute of Technology has launched a new

financial assistance program designed to help Georgia students whose families have an annual income of

less than $30,000. Tech Promise is the first of its kind offered by any public university in the state of

Georgia. The program is offered to all currently enrolled and new students who meet eligibility. Recipients

will be selected from students who apply for financial aid through the Office of Student Financial Planning

and Services and meet the deadline. The application for incoming freshmen is March 1, and the deadline

Georgia Military College: Financial Aid available for students at all GMC campuses. To reduce your

Georgia South Western State University Scholarships: All freshmen scholarship applicants must be

Georgia State University offers three scholarships for outstanding students. One is provided by the

Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund and is designed particularly for students from a Hispanic/Latino

Georgia State UAW CAP Council: This contest is open to all students scheduled to graduate from high

school and planning to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student commencing with

Harvard University: Reinforcing its commitment to opportunity and excellence across the economic

spectrum, Harvard announced a significant expansion of its 2004 financial aid initiative for low- and

middle-income families. Parents in families with incomes of less than $60,000 will no longer be expected

to contribute to the cost of their children attending Harvard. In addition, Harvard will reduce the

contributions of families with incomes between $60,000 and $80,000. Harvard is also revising its policy on

outside awards won by incoming students, ranging from scholarships provided by local community groups

Jimmy Rane Foundation Scholarship: The scholarship program was established to award college or

vocational institution scholarships to students who, without financial assistance, would be unable to attend

Johnson & Wales University’s Chancellor’s Scholarship: This program gives high academic achievers

Julian & Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is funded by annual contribution from the

Ladies’ Club Enrichment Awards: The purpose of the awards is to honor and recognize young girls in

LeTendre Education Fund Scholarship: This scholarship opportunity was established in 1998 in memory

of the late Andre E. LeTendre, former director of Compensatory Education for the U.S. Department of

Education, the LeTendre Education Fund for homeless children provides scholarship assistance to students

who are homeless or who have experienced homelessness. The scholarship may be used to help defray the

costs of college tuition, application fees, books, prep courses, visits to prospective colleges, or other

educational expenses. There will be a minimum of $1000 scholarships awarded annually. The scholarship

Making It Count Winning Characteristics Scholarship: The Winning Characteristics scholarship is a

Mercedes Benz Scholarship: This program has been established to assist graduating high school seniors

AFS Awards for Excellence: Scholarships to study abroad for students who will make a difference

participate in a six-day, all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. in partnership

Educational Tours: EF Tours is now calling for submissions to its annual essay competition for high

Georgetown Club of Georgia: In 2003, the club initiated a writing contest for high school juniors in an

effort to encourage students to think broadly and analytically about global issues while sharpening their

communication skills via the written word. The topic is: You are the Secretary General of the United

Nations in 2007. As part of your job, you must address the General Assembly of all 200 Member Countries

each year in a speech called “The State of the World.” As Secretary General, this is your opportunity to

speak out to the entire world about the most important issues facing the international community of nations

in 2007. As you do every year, you choose three topics to address to the world. What would they be? Why

summer program at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Each summer, 12 of the most promising

tuition and housing and students are expected to pay for their transportation and food. In addition, those

Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. and WXIA-TV, 11 Alive: The Kids Who Care Awards will honor five

high school students who have devoted their valuable time to make our city a better place to live. Five

students will be chosen by a group of Atlanta community leaders. Each student will receive $1,100 and a

certificate from the sponsors. Nominator’s responsibility: encourage organization to nominate teens who

have a consistent dedication to a particular program. Also take into consideration the personal obstacles the

MESET: The Mentoring and Enrichment Seminar in Engineering Training (MESET) program is a two-

United States Senate Youth Program: Each local system is invited to select one nominee. The purpose of

this program is to broaden the knowledge and understanding of high school students about Congress and

downtown Atlanta. The lecture series is held on the campuses of area colleges and universities of their

volunteer faculty. The Du Bois Society seeks students attending area high schools in the 9th-12th grades

with a GPA of 3.2 who can benefit from a unique leadership development program. Applicants are
