IDENTITY CARD

Began Operation: 1950.

History: The decision to build a metro was

made in 1941. The Green Line was then

built. The Red Line was opened in 1964,

and the third and final system, the Blue

Line, was opened in 1975.

Type: elevated and underground railway.

Number of lines: 7 in three groups (green,

red and blue)

Number of stations: 100.

Daily ridership: 1 000 000.

Positives: the cleanliness and the system

reliability.

Negatives: the metro is calm, but if

someone hustles you off, don’t wait him to

apologize: Swedish are shy. Since the mid

1980s, the Stockholm Metro has been

seriously affected by graffiti.

Specificities: It is the largest museum of

Sweden, and one of the world’s largest !

And it is the only metro in Sweden…

Who takes it ? : Everyone do, whatever

sex, social class, or job...!

Zoom on : Underground Art

can see you reading that the metro is a

museum : “what are they talking about

?! The metro is not a museum !” And

yet, it is an extraordinary one: it is

considered as

the world’s longest art exhibition and one of

the largest !

In fact, since the nineteenth century, a

debate had raged in Sweden over the need

to make art public and accessible to people

outside the salons. In 1950, the politic class

debates about exhibiting art in the metro

thanks to artists as Vera Nilsson and Siri

Derkert. And in 1957 T-Centralen was the

first station to gain art.

Today the Stockholm Metro has 100

stations and more than 90 of them feature

art created by over 150 artists.

Metro stations are often representative of

the decade during which there were built.

For example the typical Metro art of the

1970s included stations designed as a

coherent whole, with artists working in

long-term partnerships with architects and

engineers to create complete environments

rather than individual artworks.

What they have to offer depends on who is

viewing them. Some people see beauty,

some have an emotional response, while to

others it’s mainly a great way of telling the

stations apart.

What we do know is that the art in the

Metro is appreciated, unique

IDENTITY CARD

History: In 1877, the first trams are drawn by

horses. Thanks to the technical improvements,

his network widened and the trams work today

with electricity.

Type: elevated railway.

Number of stations: 51 stations.

Daily ridership: 280 000.

Positives: it is as calm and reliable as the

metro.

Negatives: some tramways are rather old (50

years old), but they are still quite reliable ! The

tramway is only present around the city, not

inside… (For the moment, see “An Ambitious

Project” to learn more about it)

Specificities: there isn’t any machine to

validate your ticket or card, an employee

comes to you in the tramway to do it !

Who takes it ? : Everyone do, whatever sex,

social class or job !

Discover… The tramway !

The tramway operated daily from 1877 to

1967 as means of public transportation in

Stockholm. But they stopped running

when Sweden switched from left hand to

right hand traffic. The tracks were

gradually removed from the city streets

until members of the Swedish Tramway

Society received permission to start

operating the Djurgården Line as a

heritage tramway in 1991. Today, you are

able to discover Stockholm in a old-

fashioned veteran-style trams which are

driven by enthusiastic members of the

Swedish Tram Society, and we can

promise you that you are going to spend a

lovely time !

DON’T FORGET : The tram can take

you from Norrmalmstorg to the

natural beauty of Djurgården, where

you will find the Vasa Museum, the

Nordic Museum, theme parks and

awesome restaurants !

DID YOU KNOW IT ?

It is possible to rent a tram from the

djugarden line in order to organize

your own excursion, birthday party,

business dinner, or even candlelight

dinner!

An ambitious current project

In 2007, four models for Stockholm’s “future tramway” were presented after a design study made

by Alstom Transport (based in France) in order to help the city to finalize their plans to reintroduce

the tramway inner the town.

The Stockholm's inhabitants were able to vote by SMS during one week before the presentation for

the project of their choice. Among the four proposals, they selected the double-deck tram project

baptized “double the pleasure”

Designed in a Scandinavian way, this tram is simple, spacious and extremely user friendly. It has

been designed to carry 170 passengers. The double decker concept will allow the possibility of

having less seats on the street level floor creating a more spacious and accessible area for

wheelchairs !

Today the project is being studied in order to start the building work and this new tram is expected

for 2025 !

THE BONUS: On weekends a modified tram named "Rolling Café" rolls !

You can have a cup of coffee along with some pastries whilst enjoying the

scenery.

IDENTITY CARD

Began Operation: 1950.

Number of lines: 31.

Number of wheelers: 2000.

Daily ridership: 80 000.

Positives: The view on the city. The short

waiting time.

Negatives: Many stops. Drivers never say

hello.

Specificities: There are many buses so that

the waiting time does not exceed five

minutes during the day.

Who takes it ? : Everyone do whatever

sex, social class, or job... and many tourists

for the view.

Zoom on : Ecological buses

Discover… The bus !

tockholm has the world's largest fleet of ethanol buses, and as recently as

SL's owner, the Stockholm County Council, has set a target that at least 50 percent of all passenger transport in its territory should occur using renewable fuels by 2012. In February 2011, the figure was nearly 40 percent.

S

during the past year, Scania, the swedish manufacturer, delivered 85 ethanol-powered articulated buses for operation in the city.

Stockholms Lokaltrafic (SL) proposes a pas called

Access for every regular users and tourists.

How to buy it ?

When buying a ticket at most ticket agents, all SL Centers or at commuter rail stations you will get the tickets on an SL Access card. The card

fee is 20 SEK and you can reload your card over and over again for several years.

If you want to buy your ticket at an SL Access ATM, you need to purchase a SL Access

card first or reuse a card you already have.

Keep the card, it is functional for six years and you can reload it with new tickets if you

come back to Stockholm again.

Do I have a special fee as a tourist ?

Yes you do. SL proposes a pass for tourists that

is valid on all the buses, tramway, metros and even ferries to Skeppsholmen (Moderna Museet stop) and Djugården (Vasa Museet stop). The

price is 160 SEK a week.

Page 13

“Please validate !”

The validation of the pass is mandatory in every wheeler for the driver to make

sure you’ve paid your trip, or in the stations to access metros. Tramways and

ferries use a different system : a ticket inspector checks the pass or ticket of

everyone before or just after boarding. Just hold your card on the card reader for

a moment and you will get at green light and an audible signal - one beep for full

price and two beeps for reduced price tickets.

Paul: Good morning, we are a group of two French students, and we are working about the means of

transportation in Stockholm.

May we ask you some questions ?

Gustav : No problem.

François: Do you often take the metro ?

Gustav : Everyday, in order to go to work.

François: How do you find it ? Reliable ? Pleasant ?

Gustav : Yes, it think there isn’t any serious issue, only a few delays sometimes. And I find it actually really

pleasant ! I was in London a few weeks ago, and it was definitely not as agreeable !

François: We didn’t notice the first days here, that there were so many works of arts in the underground and

how amazing they were.

As a Stockholmian, do you pay attention to it ? Are you blasé of these ?

Gustav : I’m not blasé, but I’m often half asleep in the morning and completely tired at the end of the day, so I

do not pay much attention to these… But when a stranger friend comes to Stockholm, it is one of the first things

I make him discover.

Paul: Do you particularly like a station ?

Gustav : I really like Hötorget with the stripes of neon light on the ceiling !

François: Have you got a SL Access card ?

Gustav : Yes, almost everyone has one, it is so practical !

Paul: Have you ever taken the Djugarden Tramway Line ?

Gustav : No, I heard that there was a nice coffee aboard, but almost only tourists took this line…

Paul: Do you think that there are too many cars in the city ?

Gustav : I think we have reached the limit, more cars in the city would start to be really annoying, as I think,

according to the media, it is in Paris.

Paul: Yes you’re right. Do you often take others means of transportations, as the boat, the bicycle ?

Interview of a metro regular user : Gustav !

Page 15

Gustav : I almost never take the boat, even if it is very pleasant, because it’s not very practical for me, as it is

quicker to use the metro to go where I need to. I sometimes use the bicycle, but never in the winter ! And, I often

use the bus, because we never wait a long time for him.

I’m sorry but this is where I have to stop, enjoy your trip !

François: Thank you very much, have a nice day !

What You Also Can Use :

The ferry, which joins the different islands and which works approximately like a bus.

-Your bicycle in the lanes which are dedicated to (you can rent one). (as a proof, cars are reasonably present in

the city)

More infos !

You will soon be able to release your seatbelts, but we must give

you a last advice before… If you enjoyed your reading, you

should go to the Stockholm Transport Museum !

It shows the development of public transport from horse-drawn

tramcars to the today´s metro system. See the oldest electrical

motor vehicle in the world and more than sixty other vehicles. Let

the kids drive a tram themselves !

To go there : T-banestation or Odenplan.
