Women’s Institute
The local WI meet at the Wistanswick Institute on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30 pm.
We offer the opportunity to learn, develop and pass on new skills, to belong to something special, make new friends, work as a team and have fun. This Month's Recipe - Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding Ingredients: 125g plain flour 125mls skimmed milk 2 teaspoons baking powder zest of 1 orange 50g caster sugar boiling water 3 tablespoons cocoa 40g butter 75g light muscovado sugar 1 egg
Put flour, orange zest, baking powder, sugar and 2 teaspoons cocoa into a bowl. Mix together the milk, butter and egg, and gradually add to the flour mixture. Mix until smooth and then pour into and ovenproof dish. Cover with clingfilm and chill for 2 hours. In a separate bowl, mix together the muscovado sugar and the remaining cocoa. Sprinkle over the top of the pudding. Pour 200mls boiling water over the pudding and bake in the oven at 180C for 20mins, or until the sponge is springy and the sauce is bubbling. Serve immediately with cream or custard.
Wistanswick Open Gardens: On Sunday June 12th, 5 members of Wistanswick WI are
opening their gardens to the public from 2 til 5pm. An entry ticket to all five gardens can be bought at the
Institute, Chapel Bank for £5 and refreshments will also be available.
The event will support the Alzheimer’s Society, and everybody is welcome.

Walking Group
The Walking Group meets on the third Sunday of the month at 11am at the Red Lion pub (& often returns there for refreshment!); Our next walk will be on June 19th, weather permitting.

Prize Bingo is played every Monday Eyes down at 8pm – All welcome!
The Parish Hall is self-funded and all proceeds from the Bingo go back into the running and the up-keep of the hall.
The Tern-Stylers Craft Group
Come and join the Tern-Stylers. We are all craft enthusiasts, be it knitting, crochet, cross stitch, quilting, etc. etc.
Dig out that project hidden at the back of your cupboard and join us for the inspiration to complete it.
Have some “me” time and meet like-minded people for friendship and to share ideas and information, possibly learn a new skill.
We meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday, 10am - 12 noon at the Wistanswick Institute

Stoke upon Tern Neighbourhood Plan – Housing Needs Survey
The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group is conducting a survey to
establish local housing needs as part of the Neighbourhood Planning
process.
The survey is for people who live in the parish of Stoke upon Tern.
It is also available to download at:

Story from the Parish
Stoke-upon-Tern – All Roads Lead to Rome
The Romans built their Empire by ensuring there were always good communication routes for supplies, men and messages. The Roman Army included surveyors and road builders. One such road ran along the northern boundary of Stoke-upon-Tern Parish. This was no accident since Stoke is included in the Domesday Book, which lists a church in existence before the Norman conquest. The Saxons often used, by then derelict, Roman roads as boundary markers for their parishes.
One such road is thought to have been built from Watling Street in Staffordshire through Mediolanum (Whitchurch) to Deva (Chester). Not much of its route is precisely known except for a section of the A41 from Hinstock to Bletchley and was known as the Longford since at least the 14th century, which suggests its remains were still visible then, over 1000 years after its construction.
Watling Street was the main highway from Portus Dubris (Dover) through Londinium to Viroconium (Wroxeter near Shrewsbury). It is thought that Viroconium became the 4th largest Roman city. The Roman strategy for the colonisation of Britannia was to build a fortress housing a legion to pacify (civilise) an area under military governance and develop a town around it in which a civil government could be formed. Around 100 AD this task was completed at Viroconium and the XXth Legion was moved to Deva (Chester) to repeat the process. The road on the northern boundary of Stoke-upon-Tern was probably built as part of a shortcut to connect Deva (Chester) to the south.
The A41 is probably not precisely seated on top of the original road since the Parish boundary ran, in places, just south of the road. In the 1980s the Parish boundary was straightened to run down the centre of the A41.
There is a popular idea that Roman roads were always dead straight. Of course this is not true. The army surveyors would decide the best route to avoid obstructions, marshy ground etc. A wide corridor of trees and brushwood each side of the road would be cleared to minimise the risk of ambush. Stockades would be constructed along the route for marching legionaries to camp in safety. There is a site just off the A41 called Roman Camp.
Evidence of Roman presence in the area is not great. There are the remains of a Roman villa in Hales. Shropshire Council records show that in 1850 a hoard of coins was discovered in Sutton Parish at Cliffe Grange. The jar that contained them was found as a garden ornament at a house in 1937.
In 1980 a hoard of 2900 coins was found at Hatton Common, off Hatton Road about a mile out of Wistanswick.
One feature of Roman roads was that they were marked with milestones. For many years there was one on the A41 at Wistanswick. It wasn’t the original Roman stone but, sadly, in recent years, it has disappeared.
There must be more to discover.

Dutton Close Residents Association (DCRA)
DCRA have had a successful couple of weeks securing funds to purchase new bark for under the climbing frame. Part of this has been from the launch of our ‘Club 80’ in which residents purchase a number between 1-80 who then have a chance of winning a small amount of money each month. This month the lucky winning numbers were 36, 35 and 5. Congratulations to those who won!
We also held a quiz night which was well attended as well as Timpsons who very kindly donated
towards the project, to whom we are extremely grateful. We are currently waiting to hear from
the RAF who have kindly agreed to lay the bark.
The park is becoming very popular now that the sun has begun to make an appearance which is lovely to see.
As a polite reminder for those using the park can they ensure the gates are kept shut and not left jammed open as this allows dogs on the park. We'd also ask all users to respect the park by putting their litter in the
bins provided, not to smoke on the park and to ensure any toys are taken home once they leave the park - there should not be any wheeled
toys on the park of any description. The park is very well used and residents have helped us to maintain the park to a very high standard which we hope to maintain for a long time
to come by working as a community to keep the park at its best. We hope that the park continues to be a popular place for families to
visit regularly together over the summer months.
Finally, the front of the estate has been kindly revived by Brenda and Norris Jones who generously gave up their time to plant new flowers in the plant box at the entrance. It's looking very colourful and provides a pleasant welcome to everyone coming on and off the estate.
