2011IN REVIEW
Seems like yesterday we were bringing in the new millennium and already 2011 is in the dust. The fact that time seems to be speeding up must simply be a figment of our imagination, because last we checked we are certainly as young as ever. (We always had reading glasses on every shelf right?)
We are happy to report that the 2011 season is behind us. It was not without its challenges. It seemed that despite our best efforts, there were major and untimely mechanical breakdowns with planes, trucks and trailers. Nothing out of the ordinary for any outfitter I suppose, but it was an especially challenging season in that way.
In 2010 we struggled with road closures and smoke from forest fires. In 2011, rain, rain, and
Tom Harwell
more rain closed roads with flooding.
Nevertheless, the successes again have outnumbered the challenges. We are thankful for each member of the GBO team who have made the year not only successful, but also an enjoyable time for everyone.
We began in August with a Grand Slam Club Ovis (GSCO) Super Slam Sheep Hunt Winner. Don Hardaway was keen to keep on hunting over hill and over dale, turning down several legal rams in interest of harvesting the exceptional Stone’s sheep he knew this area can produce. Blake was loving every minute, especially when their efforts paid off with such beautiful results.
He was followed by mountain goat hunters, Graham Derbyshire and Craig Kling, who were thrilled with their exceptional billy goat trophies. Graham’s hunt story has just been published in the winter edition of GOABC’s Mountain Hunter Magazine.
Then we had a Sportsmen for Wildlife Sheep Hunt Winner. After a day to get into position and a day of poor weather, Tom Harwell took a nice Stone’s sheep on his first hunting day.
Next up was sheep hunter Chris Woods who took a very old and tremendous ram. He was also looking for a goat, so he kept right on hunting, harvesting a huge record book billy. Chris brought along an excellent camera man, Larry Causey III. You can be on the lookout for this exceptional adventure on an upcoming outdoor network program.
The goat hunting group Jim Guenther, Mike Andersen, Jeff Grant came next. Mike and
Wrangler/Guide Tyler (& dinner!)

Jim both took nice big billies, and Jeff was also successful, although maybe wishing his trigger finger had hung on a bit longer.
Three friends from Mexico, GSCO Super Slam Goat Hunt Winner Roberto Cortazar, Eduardo Escalera and Jorge Cobain were excited to have the opportunity to hunt big game in Canada. Roberto ended up taking a huge record book billy, along with an 8’ record book grizzly, and a beautiful 54” moose that was just shy of making the record book. A result of hard work, luck and ability, he was ecstatic. Eduardo and Jorge both took very respectable bull moose. Jorge was happy also to be able to harvest a grizzly.
John Hoestenbach came primarily for a good goat which he did accomplish without a problem. Adding a beautiful grizzly bear to his collection simply iced the cake.
Buddies from Michigan, Rock Kietzer and Skip Blackmore were out to have a great time on their hunt. And they did that with gusto, regardless of the outcome. While Skip and Rock hunted here and there, for various reasons, poor weather included, they had no luck pulling the trigger. We are certain that Skip and Rock will return to have round two with the mountain billies.
Kelly Davis, another GSCO Super Slam Winner, came looking for an exceptional moose. Though he had lots of fun looking, he just didn’t see the one he wanted within the time frame he had. Hopefully Kelly can return soon to finish the effort he has begun.
Our last goat hunter, GSCO Super Slam Winner Dan Kemp
Jim Guenther & Guide Tyler
was successful in harvesting a nice billy early in his hunt. He decided to stay and look for a grizzly. As luck would have it, the big bruin appeared the day after he headed home.
A dream came true for Robin Hawkins of Ohio when he was able to find a monster Boone and Crockett Canada Moose. Smiles all around!
Larry Lundberg from California rounded out the 2011 season by harvesting a very nice mountain caribou.
So there you have it, the 2011 season in short form. We are grateful for each hunter client for booking a hunt with us, and giving their best effort to enjoy their wilderness experience in our area. Our deepest thanks go to “the best in the west” group of guides, wranglers and cooks. We do appreciate you all.
