When people ask what sets us apart from others, my response is our employees. Their devotion and commitment to advancing their knowledge and skills is evident by a recent award our clinical care team received. Stonehill Franciscan Services recently received a Tipping Point Award from the Center to Advance Palliative Care. Stonehill Franciscan Services was named one of 24 winners of the inaugural round of the Tipping Point Challenge, a national innovation and quality improvement challenge sponsored by the Center to Advance Palliative Care and the John A. Hartford Foundation. Over 1,500 organizations nationwide participated in the Challenge.

The goal of the first Tipping Point Challenge was to help health care organizations expand the ability to effectively care for seriously ill patients by enhancing skills among clinicians in all medical specialties treating serious illness. These include communication, pain management, and symptom management skills directed at the complex needs of people living with serious illnesses.

Palliative Care is a specialized type of healthcare for individuals with chronic illnesses that focuses on what matters most to the individual person whether that be quality of life, pain management, or other health goals. Stonehill launched its Palliative Care program in 2019 and now has a dedicated Palliative Care Unit.

Our goal is to better serve our community and I’m proud of the efforts put forth to ensure we are providing the right care at the right time.

Unrestricted/Area of Greatest Need Donations

Thanks to many donors who gave unrestricted donations, we were able to fund several Area of Greatest Need projects that will have a positive impact on the lives of residents, staff, and visitors. We are so grateful for everyone who donates to Stonehill.

The following projects are made possible by donations:

• Residents at Assisi Village will enjoy live musical performances.• Residents at the Stonehill Health Center will enjoy life enriching activities like pottery classes and dance classes.• The Pastoral Care team will be able to purchase an additional microphone to help with spiritual activities in the Chapel.• New iPads will help on-board new staff and help all staff with required training and continuing education that help them best serve residents.

Embracing Community: The Story Continues Capital Campaign

We continue to work toward our $3 million goal for the Embracing Community: The Story Continues campaign. To date we have raised just under $2.2 million. There is still time to support this campaign which will help with the new Assisi Village expansion; including adding assisted living memory care apartments and a sky bridge that will connect the Stonehill Health Center and Assisi Village buildings. It’s so exciting to watch the progress happening and we know this will touch many lives.

If you would like to donate to this important project that will meet a growing and unmet need in our community for assisted living memory care services please visit www.stonehilldbq.com/embracingcommunity.

Thank you!

The Auxiliary is excited to again have the Irish Dancers from the McNulty School of Dance perform for you on Sunday, March 8th at 2:30 pm. Families are most welcome to attend. So come and share this fun with your loved one.

We are proceeding with plans for the spring Victorian Afternoon Tea that is taking the place of the Spring Style Show that has been held in the past. The Tea will be Thursday, May 14th from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Diamond Jo. This event is our largest fundraiser for the year. So reserve the date, gather your friends, and come support Stonehill while having a great time! Invitations will be mailed in late March, and reservations can also be made online at www.stonehilldbq.com/VictorianTea.

Also don’t forget the Mother’s Day Flower and Bake Sale on Friday, May 8th from 7am-3pm in the Stonehill Coffee Shop. We will have beautiful, inexpensive flower arrangments and a variety of baked goods available for purchase.

The Auxiliary Annual Meeting will be held following the Stonehill Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 14. See page 2 for more information.

I Gave it Up for Lent

The Season of Lent has arrived. Lent is meant to prepare the believer in Jesus Christ for Easter through prayer, fasting, and giving to the poor and needy. On Ash Wednesday, I stood next to a guy at the local supermarket check-out who was wearing a T-Shirt that read, “I gave it up for Lent!” I never asked him what he actually gave up. Maybe it was coffee, soda, pizza, chocolate, or perhaps fast-food?

Later that same day I overheard a middle-aged woman say, “For Lent, I’m just giving up.” Her facial expression was sad-filled. I never asked her what she actually was giving up. I knew in my heart what she meant. She looked tired, weary, worn-out, and making another sacrifice would do her in. It would destroy what little joy and hope she had left in her life.

Lent is undeniably, a “sacred” season. It’s about restoring and renewing our relationship with God. Often that is done by many of us through making a real personal sacrifice; going without some materialistic love to focus on a spiritual love.

Experiencing the spiritual love of God in the person of Jesus requires sacrifice. God really is not asking us to sacrifice by giving up a favorite food or drink. Within the Christian community life that is Stonehill, our God is asking us to share and care; we are called to give compassion and empathy; we are invited to act justly and fair toward others, to love tenderly and warmly those we serve, to walk with humility, respect, and dignity toward each person we encounter. That’s a much greater sacrifice that giving up pizza, cheesecake, or chocolate for Lent. If you try it, you will realize how it restores, renews, and creates new life among us.

A young child put it very well one day when he was telling another person what his mom told him to sacrifice and give up for Lent. He stated, “Mom said I could continue to enjoy Monday-night pizza during Lent if I just ask God to help me not be such a jerk.” Simply put, not acting like a jerk can be the greater sacrifice than not eating Monday-night

pizza. It may certainly help that young child restore and renew his relationship with God and others as well as enable him to focus on spiritual love.

Perhaps everyone associated with Stonehill should wear a t-shirt that says, “I gave it up for Lent!” It would have others wondering what we gave up. Hopefully, no one will have to ask us. It will be evident to them in our non-judgmental and caring words; evident in our friendly and warm greetings of hospitality; evident in the reverence and respect we provide; evident in how we safeguard the personal possessions of residents; evident in how we have gone out of our way to ensure residents choices, preferences, and likes happen and their dislikes do not.

The message and experience of Lent is “sacred.” It prepares us for Easter—the risen life of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Have a Happy “I gave it up for Lent” Season!”

Eternal Rest to:
