Kudos to You: -Two of our students, Cole Meston and C.J. Misener, were a great help with Art-to-the-Schools program on Wednesday and Thursday of the Teachers Convention. These two gentlemen worked well together as a team along with seven students from QCIS. They will have the new treatment chair soon, as a result of funds raised from the Stonepark Gives Back Concert. Other items they recently bought were two large tv's, X-Box and

students who have had cancer treatment there. These items are very useful in providing distractions for the children during treatment. There is always a great need in that department to help our young patients. Pictured below is Callum Russell-MacLean, a former Stonepark student, with the new equipment.

Magazine Campaign: A big thank you to the students and parents who supported our annual Magazine Campaign here at the school. Students achieved the goal set out prior to the start of the campaign, and as part of the deal with students, Mr. Beck had to wear his penguin suit for the day. Great work on everyone’s part! transportation costs for extra-curricular activities and school related trips; additional items in the cafeteria such as microwaves; prizes and thank you gifts for school fairs; etc;. As you can see, the money is well used, and serves students in a wide variety of ways. We hope to be able to continue on with such support in the future as well. A new addition to this year’s campaign was a “limo lunch” for students who sold more than 20 subscriptions and collected all 20 of the penguins. The following students (pictured below) were picked up at the school in a limo and taken to Pizza Delight for a pizza lunch, followed by a cruise around town in the limo: Jeremy Boyle. Cassidy Hughes, Riley McInnis, Sophie Lannigan, Eve Johnson, Carson Gallant, Ben Newson, Madeline Killorn, Madeleine Valois, Colton Willis, Matthew Llewellyn, Ryan Llewellyn. A nice way to recognize the students for their excellent work, and we thank them for that. Winners of the $200 shopping spree were: Daniel

Mosher 7I, Kelly McCardle 8B, Andrew Lewis 9F. Congratulations to each of these students. Students Achieve (SAS) - Students Achieve is an online application that allows teachers to enter attendance and marks, and parents and students to view them as they are entered. At Stonepark, attendance is entered by all homeroom teachers, but currently, it is optional for teachers to display marks. However, many teachers are choosing to do so at this time. If you do not yet have a Students Achieve username (one per family), please email us at: [email protected] Usernames and passwords do not change from year to year.

Library News: The annual fall Scholastic Book Fair was very successful with our commission over $1000. Thank you to all who supported the book fair. New library resources were purchased with the money raised. There were a number of contests ongoing during the fair. The daily book quote winners were Oliver Judson 7I, Erin Chiasson 7C and Patrick MacKay 8D. The winners of “I Wish I Could Win” were Celelia Potter 7C, Delaynie Hennessey 8 G and Sophie Acorn 7B. The teacher winner of “I Wish I Could Win” was Stephanie Holmes of grade 8.

Congratulations to all and a special thanks to the library monitors who helped out during the fair. November 22nd is the beginning of our annual literacy event, “The Read In”. This event focuses on reading and reading activities in language arts classes and Celebrity Readers for three days. In combination with the event there is a bookmark contest with the theme of literacy. Students can enter the contest by going to the library for the contest information. The deadline for submissions to the contest is Nov. 14th

Mr. Stratton’s Culinary Corner: This month Mr. Stratton reminds you to practice good kitchen safety. Here are some tips.

1) Keep flammables away from the stovetop, such as paper towels, oven mitts, cloths, and curtains.

2) Do not store food items above the stove. The area above the stove is warmer and food could spoil easily if kept here.

3) Lift the cover off of a pot so that it opens with the steam facing away from you.

4) Never use water to put out a grease fire in a kitchen. Smother grease fires with a pot lid, salt or baking soda.

5) Turn pot handles inward when they are on a stovetop.

Did you know that most home fires begin in the kitchen? Please never deep fry french-fries in a pot on the stovetop.

Lunch ideas

Many students are eating Fast food Lunches much too often. These lunches include highly processed packaged foods (frozen foods, pizza pockets, Lunchmates, snack foods etc). Try to limit these items to once or twice a week.

Have your child make their own fresh sub sandwiches, pita wraps, salad bowls, veggies and dips, fresh fruit and cheese, hummus and breads/or veggies—yummm!

Get the ingredients ready on a Sunday night and use them up early in the week.

Save Thursday and Friday for those Fast Foods. It’ll soon become routine.

Phys Ed Corner: Girls Field Hockey : A golden congratulations goes out to members of our girls field hockey team. The team defeated Montague 1-0 in the provincial final at Cornwall turf. Amelia Jenkins scored the lone goal half way through the first half of the game. This inspired the Tigers to pressure the Montague team and kept the play in the opposing end for majority of the first half. The second half was filled with defense as the Tigers felt Montague’s pressure. Payton Brown had several key saves and the defensive team of Sophie Carragher and Mackenzie Koughan played a huge part in the win. Amelia Jenkins was awarded a

tournament all star and Ashley Fitzpatrick was awarded the MVP honor. Special mention goes out to Charlee Holden and Meghan Kiley for their contribution to the win. Mrs. Steele, Mme Holmes and Mme. Sears are extremely proud of their team’s efforts and composure to take the banner back home to Stonepark. Well done! Cross Country: The Stonepark Bantam Girls Cross Country team braved some horrible weather conditions and tough competition to win the provincial cross country championship in Mill River. Tori Fitzpatrick won the individual event and Ashley Fitzpatrick was fourth. Other team members are: Ellie Langston, Lilly Hickox, Nicole Derry, Catherine MacEwen, Maddy Neuffer and Maddy Hurley. The Midget Girls competed very well and finished third in the team event. Carly Connell led the Tigers with a strong fourth place finish. Other team members are: Juli MacMillan, Mackayla Martell, Emma Bradley and Drew McKeighan. The Bantam Boys Team of Ben Fradsham, Jamil Saleh, Patrick MacKay, Jack Digout and Logan White braved the elements and had a strong race. Congratulations to all participants and a big thanks for representing our school in a great way! Golf: The Stonepark Boys Golf Team defended its intermediate golf crown once again this year with a decisive win over the competition. After finishing first in the zone qualifier, the boys had four of the top 5 scores in the provincial championships. Jordan Birt shot an 81 but lost in a playoff to finish second overall, just slightly ahead of Colin Koughan who finished with an 83. Nick Fitzpatrick 85, and Nick Currie 86, rounded out the scoring for the team. The team total set a new provincial record for this level. Great job, guys! Boys Soccer: Our Boys Soccer Team almost pulled out a Cinderella ending to their season. The boys started the season slowly but gained momentum at the right part of the season as they pulled out two overtime wins in semi-final play, advancing them to the Provincial gold medal game against Birchwood. Isaac Costain opened the scoring but Birchwood fought back, eventually winning the game 3-1. We would like to thank Phil Enserink and John Chandler for their dedication in coaching our team. We appreciate your efforts. Girls “A” Soccer: Mme. Matheson, coach, and Mrs. Lyons, manager, want to thank the members of the Girls' A Soccer Team and their parents for their dedication this season. The girls were awesome to work with and should be very proud. The team ranked second in the league standings and, despite a valiant effort, had a heartbreaking loss in the Eastern semi final game. Members of

the team are: Kate Bartlett, Chloe Benoit, Riley Chappell, Cici Clark, Oryssya Ellis, Tori Fitzpatrick, Sam Gallant-MacNeill, Chelsey Gunn, Courtney Gunn, Karley Hartinger, Ellie Langston, Tess Lyons, Bethany MacDougall, Allie MacKenzie, Kelly McCardle, Maddy Neuffer, Ashley Plaggenhoef, Clara Ready, Samantha Silliphant, Lauren Steele, Maddie Stewart, and Amelia Weber The Stonepark Girls AA Soccer Team: Won their first Provincial title in nearly 10 years. The girls put an undefeated season on the line in the Gold medal game on the turf at UPEI. The girls took control of the game from the opening kickoff. They started the game with the same focus and drive they carried throughout the season. With a team first approach, they moved the ball quickly and used their speed to create chances early in the match. The team's unselfish play resulted in goals from Maddie Hurley, and Maeve MacNally. Chelsea Barnett stopped all opportunites by Queen Charlotte. Although playing with the lead, the girls kept pressing forward, winning almost every battle for the ball. They finished the game the same way they started! What a game! What a feeling! Congratulations to all players on a terrific season.

Volleyball:

Our boys volleyball team advances to the provincial championships next week. They earned a bye to the provincial tournament by finishing first place in the league. Good luck to the boys and their coaches, Aaron Young and Eric VanWiechen. Our girls volleyball team will play in a zone semi-final on Thursday. The winner of this game will advance to the provincials. Good luck to our girls and coaches Larry Young, Nancy MacKinnon and Carrie MacKay. Band News: The “Coffee, Tea, and Treats” sale during parent-teacher interviews raised $485.00 for the grade 9 band trip. Thank you to all of the students and parents who helped to make this fund-raiser a success! Grade 9 band students will perform on Thursday, November 8th in the morning during the school Remembrance Day assembly. Grade 9 band students are reminded that uniforms (white shirts, black pants, band sweaters) are required for this event. Dr. Dale Lonis will be presenting a workshop for Grade 9 band students on Thursday, November 22. Dr. Lonis is a well respected band director, adjudicator and clinician. Details will be posted to the band blog later this month: http://stoneparkband.wordpress.com/ Science and Heritage Fairs at Stonepark: A question was raised by some parents at parent-teacher conferences, wondering whether these fairs are both mandatory. To clarify, Heritage Fair is mandatory for grade 7 English students only, but can be open to anyone in other grades who would like to participate. Our in-school Heritage Fair is held in mid-April.
