    Section II . DESCRIPTION AND DATA

    2. DESCRIPTION.lc The Stoner light machinegun (belt-fed) is a 5 .56mm automaticweapon (figure 1) The ammunition is fed into th e weapon by means of

    a disintegrating metallic link belt. The weapon fires from th e open-boltposition and features a quick-change barrel. The operational energy isprovided by the gas from th e fired round.

    b. Sights are adjustable in l / mil increments in windage andelevation and are graduated on a scale from 200 to 1100 meters. Thefully-adjustable front sight can be zeroed to th e rear sight in bothwindage and elevation.

    3. NAME AND SERIAL NUMBERThe name and serial number of th e weapon are stamped on the bottom

    of the receiver in front of th e trigger housing (figure 14) .

    CHAPTER 2OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

    Section I. SERVICE UPON RECEIPT OF MATERIEL5. GENERAL

    .!:! When a weapon is received, i t is th e responsibility of the officerin charge to determine whether the materiel has been properly prepared forservice by th e supplying organization and to be sure it is in condition toperform its function .

    .. All repair parts, tools, and equipment will be checked with th eli s t!ng in Appendix II and III .

    . . A record will be made of all missing parts, tools, and equipmentand of any malfunctions. Deficiencies will be corrected as quickly aspossible.6. SERVICES

    Section II. CONTROLS

    7. GENERAL

    This section describes, locates, an d illustrates the various controlsprovided for the operation and organizational maintenance of th e weapon.

    8. WEAPON CONTROLS Barrel Latch. The barrel latch (figure 2) is located on the top of

    the weapon to th e front of th e feed cover. I t consists of three parts,latch, lockpin and spring assembly. Attached to th e rear of the latch isthe locking pin which locks and holds the barrel into position.

    ]:)_. Cocking Handle. The cocking handle (figure 2) is located onthe right side of th e receiver. This control allows for manual cockingof the weapon when required. The cocking handle spring (figure 19) locksth e handle in its forward position .

    .9. Safety. The safety is located just forward of the trigger (figure 2) When pushed all the way forward through th e slot in th e trigger guard,the safety is in the "OFF" or "FIRE'' position. When pulled all the wayto the rear, towards th e trigger, it is in th e "SAFE" position. Thissafety can be moved of f safe without removing the trigger finger fromthe trigger guard by pushing forward with the trigger finger.

    . Selector Lever. The selector lever (figure ll ) is located on theleft side of the trigger housing group above and to the rear of the trigger.It is movable to two positions," Auto" and" Semi". The weapon will fireautomatically with th e lever in either position.

    .. Trigger. The trigger (figure 2) is located below the receiverdirectly under th e rear sight. Its function is to control th e firing of theweapon with the selector lever in the"Auto"or''Semi''position.

    f.. Feed Cover Latch. The feed cover latch (figure 2) is locatedon the upper right rear end of tpe feed cover. The function of th elatch is to secure the cover in th e closed position. Pushing the latchforward unlatches the feed cover from th e receiver.

    _g:. Rear Sight. The rear sight (figure 3) has two controls and a battlesight.

    (1) Elevation knob. The elevation knob (figure 3) is located onth e right side of the leaf sight. The function of th e knob is to providefine vertical adjustment of the sight.

    (2) Windage knob. The windage knob (figure 3) is located onthe left side of the sight base. The function of th e knob is to provideaccurate lateral adjustment.

    (3) Battle sight. The battle sight (figure 3) is located on thebase of the leaf sight and is used when th e leaf sight is in the down positionand corresponds to the leaf sight set at a range of 200 meters.h Front Sight. The elevation adjustment for zeroing th e weapon is in

    th e front sight base (figure 4) , an d adjustments are made by using thetip of a cartridge. To raise or lower th e front sight post, depress thedetent at the base of the front sight post and turn the post in th e desireddirection. To move the point of impact up, turn the sight post in th edirection of th e arrow and the word "UP" stamped on th e base.

    J.. Adjustable gas yalve. The adjustable gas valve is located in th efront sight base (figure 5 and 6) . The valve can be set to any one ofthree positions. By inserting the point of a cartridge into the hole overth e valve lock detent (figure 5), and pushing down on th e detent, youunlock the valve which then may be moved one way or th e other dependenton which size gas port setting is desired. The slowest rate of fire isobtained when the narrowest indicator notch is set over th e valve lockdetent and the detent allowed to lock the valve in place. The threeindicator notches are sized according to th e size of the gas port alignedwith the gas port in the barrel. The widest notch is used when the fastestrate of fire is desired. This valve may be removed for cleaning purposesby rotating th e valve (figure 6) until th e flat exposes the roll pin. Thenpush th e valve out from the left side.9. BIPOD

    a. Spring Control. The clamping action of th e biped (figure 7) iscontrolled by two springs, one spring mounted inside of the other. Thesprings are located directly beneath th e biped hinge.

    .Q.. Leg Extension Control. Bipod le g extension is controlled by springlatches mounted in th e le g extensions. Leg adjustment is accomplishedby depressing the latch (figure 7) located on the inner side of each le gand extending the legs to desired height.

    s;:. Bipod Lock. A spring loaded bipod lock (figure 7) is providedto lock tho bipod to the weapon or when collapsed to carry in its case .

    Section III. OPERATION UNDER USUAL CONDITIONS

    10 . GF:NERALThis section contains instructions for th e operation of the weapon

    under conditions of moderate temperatures ond humidity. Instructionsfor operation under these conditions are covered in paragraphs 25 through27.11. PREPARATION FOR FIRING

    a. The light machinegun, belt-fed, may be fired from the prone,sitting, hip, or standing position. When

    .. Loading th e Weapon. The rounds should be securely assembledand positioned in their push-through type links. Set the safety on "Safe",pull th e cocking handle to th e rear, return th e cocking handle to its lockedposition. Unlatch and raise th e feed cover (figure 9) . The feed trayshould remain down on th e receiver. Remove th e cover from the plasticammunition box and insert it in the other side of the box leaving it partlyopen. Attach the box to th e tray, place the linked belt on th e feed tray(figure 9) with th e first round to be fired in the feed groove. The feedtray belt-holding pawl will then engage the second round. The ammunitionbelt must be positioned with th e open side of the links facing down topermit stripping of th e cartridge from th e link. Close the ammunition boxcover completely. Close the feed cover, making sure that it is latchedsecurely.14. ZEROING

    The weapon will be zeroed in accordance with instructions containedin FM 23-67.15. FIRING WEAPON

    WARNING: MAKE SURE THE SAFETY IS IN THE "SAFE" POSITION WHENTHE WEAPON IS NOT BEING FIRED. With th e weapon loaded and aimed,set the safety lever forward to its "Off" position, and pull the trigger. Theweapon will continue to fire until th e belt is exhaustad or th e trigger isreleased. When th e belt is exhausted, th e last two links of the beltwill remain in the feed tray, and must be removed by hand when th e coveris opened to reload.NOTE: THE WEAPON FIRES AUTOMATICALLY WHEN THE SELECTOR LEVERIS IN EITHER THE "SEMI" OR "AUTO" POSITION,16. MISFIRE, HANGFIRE, AND COOKOFF

    Misfire. A misfire is a complete failure to fire. A misfire initself is no t dangerous but, since it cannot be immediately distinguishedfrom a delay in the functioning of the firing mechanism or from a hangfire(!2. below), it should be considered as a possible delayed firing untilsuch possibility has been eliminated. Such delay in the functioning ofthe firing mechanism, for example, could result from the presence offoreign matter such a grit, sand, frost, ice, or improper or excessiveoil or grease which might create initially a partial mechanical restraintwhich, after some indeterminate delay, is overcome and the firing pinis then driven into the primer in the normal manner. In this connection,no round should be left in a hot weapon any longer than the circumstancesrequire because of the possibility of a cookoff (below). Refer toparagraph 17 for removal procedures.

    _]2. Hang fire. A hang fire is a delay in th e functioning of a propellingcharge at the time of firing. The amount of delay is unpredictable but,in most cases, will fall within the range of a split second to severalseconds. Thus, a hangfire cannot be distinguished immediately froma misfire and therein lies the principal danger of assuming a failure ofthe weapon to fire immediately upon actuation of th e firing mechanism isa misfire, whereas, in fact, it may prove to be a hangfire.WARNING: DURING THE PRESCRIBED TIME INTERVALS. THE WEAPON WILLBE KEPT TRAINED ON THE TARGET. ALL PERSONNEL WILL STAND CLEAR.OF THE MUZZLE. REFER TO PARAGRAPH 17 FOR REMOVAL PROCEDURES.

    Q. Cookoff. A cookoff is a functioning of any or all of the explosivecomponents of a round chambered in a very hot weapon du e to the heatof the weapon. I f the primer or propelling charge should cookoff, th eprojectile may be propelled from the weapon with normal velocity eventhough no attempt was made to fire th e primer by actuating the firingmechanism. In such a case, although there may be uncertainty as towhether or when the round will fire, th e precautions to be observed arethe same as those prescribed for a hangfire (. above) . To prevent acookoff, a round of ammunition which has been loaded into a very hotweapon should be fired or removed after the round is in th e weapon 5seconds. Refer to th e following paragraph for removal procedures.17. PROCEDURES FOR REMOVING A ROUND IN CASE OF FAILURE TO FIRE

    _g_. General. After a failure to fire, due to the possibility of ahangfire or cookoff, th e following general precautions, as applicable,will be observed until th e round has been removed from th e weaponand the cause of failure determined.

    (1) Keep th e weapon trained on the target. All personnel willstand clear of the muzzle.

    (2) Before retracting the bolt, either to remove th e round orrecook the weapon, personnel no t required for th e operation will becleared from th e immediate vicinity.

    (3) The round, after removal from th e weapon, will be keptseparate from other roun

    .Q.. Time Interval. The definite time intervals for waiting after failureof weapon to fire are prescribed as follows: Always keep the round lockedin th e chamber for 5 seconds from the time a misfire occurs, to insureagainst an explosion outside of th e gun in th e event a hangfire develops.I f the barrel is hot and a misfire stops automatic operation of th e gun, wait5 seconds with th e round locked in th e chamber to insure against hangfiredangers, then extract immediately to prevent a cookoff. I f th e roundcannot be extracted within 5 seconds, it must remain locked in the chamberfor at least 5 minutes due to the possibility of a cookoff.

    WARNING: DO NOT RETRACT THE BOLT WHEN A HANGFIRE OR COOKOFFIS SUSPECTED. A HANGFIRE WILL NORMALLY OCCUR WITHIN 5 SECONDSFROM THE TIME THE PRIMER IS STRUCK AND A COOKOFF AFTER lO SECONDSOF CONTACT WITH THE CHAMBER IN A HOT BARREL. ONE HUNDRED-FIFTYROUNDS FIRED IN A 2-MINUTE PERIOD WILL MAKE A BARREL HOT ENOUGHTO PRODUCE A COOKOFF,18 . DOUBLE FEED

    A double feed is a malfunction which occurs when th e empty casefails to eject and another round is picked up by the bolt. Neither canfeed or chamber properly and both become jammed and deformed. Bothrounds can be ejected manually using th e cocking handle. The causenormally is a short recoil which indicates a dirty gas port or faultyammunition.19. SERVICE DURING FIRING

    No during-firing service operations are required for this weapon.20 . UNLOADING THE WEAPON

    .2 To unload a cocked, loaded machinegun, move the safetyto the" $afe"position. Raise the feed cover, remove the belt and remaining link in th e feed tray. Check the receiver and chamber to make sureno rounds remain.21. SERVICE AFTER FIRING

    Perform the after-firing operations. Refer to Table 2.

    ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

    Section!. REPAIR PARTS, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT22 . GENERAL

    Repair parts, tools, and equipment are issued to the using organizationfor operating and maintaining th e materiel. Tools and equipment should no tbe used for purposes other than prescribed and, when not in use, should beproperly stowed.23. REPAIR PARTS

    Repair parts are supplied to the using organization for replacement ofthose parts most likely to become worn, broken, or otherwise unserviceable,when replacement of these parts is authorized to the using organization.Repair parts supplied to the using organization are listed in Appendix II,which is the authority for requisitioning replacements. Repair parts suppliedfor organizational maintenance are listed in Appendix III.24 . SPECIAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

    Special tools are listed in Appendix III.

    Section II, LUBRICATION25 . LUBRICATION INSTRUCTIONS

    The lubrication instructions (Table 1) prescribes cleaning andlubrication procedures as to locations, intervals an d proper materials.

    26. GENERAL LUBRICATION INSTRUCTIONSa. Usual Conditions. Lubrication intervals specified in Table 1, arefor n;:;rmal operation and where moderate temperature and humidity prevail.]2. Reports and Records. Report unsatisfactory performance of

    materiel or effect of prescribed lubricants and preserving materials.27. SPECIFIC LUBRICATION INSTRUCTIONS

    _s. General. Lubrication will be performed more frequently thanspecified in table 1 to compensate for abnormal operation and extremeconditons, such as high or low temperatures, prolonged periods ofhigh-rate operation, or continued exposure to moisture, any one ofwhich may quickly destroy th e protective qualities of the lubricant.

    1:!. Chanoing Grade of Lubricants . Lubricants are prescribed inaccordance with temperature ranges: above 0F. , and below 0F.The time to change the grade of lubricants is determined by maintaininga close check of the operation of the weapon during th e approach tochangeover periods in accordance with weather forecast data. Ordinarily,it will be necessary to change grade of lubricants only when air temperature is consistently above or below 0F.

    g. Extreme Cold Weather; Apply a light coat of weapons lubricating oil(LAW) to all operating mechanism surfaces. Materiel should be exercisedmore frequently during periods of low temperature to insure proper functionin

    s;!. Extreme Hot Weather. Special lubricants will ordinarily no t berequired at extremely high temperatures, as lubricants prescribed fortemperatures above 0F. provide adequate protection. However' morefrequent servicing than specified in Tables 2 and 3 is necessary becausethe heat tends to dissipate th e lubricants.

    g . Humid and Salt-Air Conditions. High humidity, moisture, or saltai r contaminate lubricants, necessitating more frequent service thanspecified in Tables 2 and 3.

    j. Before Immersion. Lubricate materiel before amphibious operationas prescribed in Table 1.

    Sl After Immersion. After immersion, perform th e maintenance desscribed in paragraph 28 and 34

    .!J.. Sandy or Dusty Conditions. I f firing or prolonged travel has occurreunder dusty or sandy conditions, clean and inspect all lubricated surfacesfor fouled lubricants. Lubricate as necessary.

    Section IV. TROUBLESHOOTING30. SCOPE

    This section contains troubleshooting information and tests for locating and correcting some of the troubles which may develop in the weapon.Troubleshooting is th e systematic study of trouble signs, testing to determine th e defective component, and applying corrective action. Eachmalfunction is followed by probable causes an d suggested procedures tobe followed.31. TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

    Table 4 is intended to be used only as a guide in troubleshooting.This table does no t cover all possible malfunctions that may occur; onlythe more common malfunctions are listed. The tests and corrective actionsare governed by the scope of the operator or organizational level of maintenance.

    CHAPTER 4MAINTENANCE OF LIGHT MACHINEGUN, BELT- FED

    32. GENERALMaintenance includes all measures taken to keep th e weapon in top

    operating condition. This includes normal cleaning, inspect' on fordefective parts, repair, and lubrication. The individual is authorizedto disassemble hi s weapon to th e extent called "field stripping"(figure 10). The amount of disassembly he is allowed to perform withoutsupervision is adequate for normal maintenance. The frequency ofdisassembly and assembly should be kept to a minimum, consistentwith maintenance and instructional requirements.

    The weapon ha s been designed so that i t can be taken a;:>art andput together easily. No force is needed i f i t is disassembled, andassembled correctly. As the weapon is disassembled, the parts shouldbe laid out from left to right. This makes assembly easier because theparts are assembled in the reverse order of disassembly. Disassemblymay be accomplished in th e field using only a cartridge.

    (4) Place the right hand over the back of the receiver and rotatethe rr"uzzle up slowly. The carrier, piston an d bolt assembly will slideout of the receiver (figure 13) .

    _g:. Disassembly of the Trigger Housing Group.(l) Hold the trigger housing group in a vertical position.

    Insert th e point of a cartridge into th e hole that th e lock plate tang isengaged in (figure 25), and push th e lock plate forward. Put the pointof the cartridge against the rea r of the lock plate and push it as farforward as possible (figure 26). The lock plate must remain forwardduring disassembly of the trigger housing group so that the trigger pinscan be removed.

    (2) Push out the trigger housing cover pin (figure 27), andremove the trigger housing cover.

    extension, and gas cylinder. I t also provides temporary protection from rust.(!?) Hot, soapy water or plain ho t water is a substitute for bore

    cleaner. (sj Dry-cleaning sG>lvent is used for cleaning weapons whichare coated with grease, oil, or corrosion-preventative compounds.CAUTION: USE WARM SOAPY WATER TO CLEAN THE BUTTSTOCK AND FORE-STOCK, SOME CLEANING SOLVENTS AND GASOLINE TEND TO SOFTENAND DISTORT THE PLASTIC MATERIAL,

    (2) Lubricants.@) Special preservative lubricating oil is used for lubricating

    th e weapon at normal and low temperatures.(!?) Medium preservative lubricating oil is used instead

    (4) Before firing.@) Before firing the weapon, th e bore and chamber should

    be cleaned and dried. A light coat of oil should be placed on all metalparts except those which come in contact with ammunition.

    () Lubriplate should be applied to the parts that show frictionwear. This is particularly important when th e weapon is exposed to rain orsalt water. Lubriplate should not be used in extremely cold temperaturesor when the weapon is exposed to extremes of sand and dust.

    () In cold climates (temperatures below freezing) the weaponmust be kept free of moisture and excess oil . Moisture and excess oil onthe working parts cause them to operate sluggishly or to fail completely.The weapon must be disassembled and wiped with a clean dry cloth. Drycleaning solvent may be used if necessary to remove oil or grease. Partsthat show signs of wear may be wiped with a patch lightly dampened witha special preservative lul:ricating oil. It is best to keep the weapon asclose as possible to outside temperature at all times due to the collection ofmoisture which occurs when cold metal comes in contact with warm air.I f th e weapon is brought into a warm room, it should be allowed to reachroom temperatures so that condensation will appear before the weapon is cleaned.(g) In hot, dr y climates, th e weapon must be cleaned daily, ormore often, to remove sand and/or dust from th e bore and working parts. Insandy_ areas, the weapon should be kept dry to prevent the collection of sand.The weapon should be kept covered during sand and dust storms.

    (5) After firing .@) The weapon must be cleaned after it has been fired because

    firing produces deposits of primer fouling, powder ashes, carbon, and metalfouling. The ammunition has a noncorrosive primer which makes cleaningeasier, but no less important. The primer still leaves a deposit that maycollect moisture and promote rust i f it is no t removed. The cleaning described below will remove all deposits except metal fouling which is relatively uncommon and is removed by Ordnance personnel.() The weapon should be disassembled as outlined in paragraph 33-a through f. The following parts of the weapon should be cleanedafter firing in th e following manner:

    Bore. Run patches dampened with bore cleaner or ho tsoapy water back and forth through the bore several times. Next, attach theweapon bore brush to the cleaning rod and run i t back and forth through thebore several times. Follow this with more wet patches. Run several drypatches through the bore and inspect each patch as it is removed. The boreis olean when a dr y patch comes out clean with no evidence of fouling.finally, run an oily patch through th e bore to leave a light coat of oilinside the barrel.NOTE: THE PATCH OR BRUSH MUST BE PUSHED ALL THE WAY THROUGHTHE BORE BEFORE IT IS WITHDRAWN.

    1_. Chamber. Using a suitable brush (figure 34) cleanthe chamber. Dry the chamber with a clean dry patch.

    l Barrel Extension. Using a suitable brush (figure 34)clean the lugs of the barrel extens ion. After removing the carbon,particles of dirt and/or brass filings, oil the barrel extension lugslightly.

    4. Variable Gas Valve. Remove the gas valve, and withan appropriate-wire brush, clean out the slots of all carbon and/orfouling.

    l i. Gas Port. Using a suitable reamer (figure 35) cleanthe gas port in the barrel removing any carbon buildup .

    ... Gas rings on boss of Front Sight Base. Soak bosswith bore cleaning solvent and wire brush to remove all fouling untilthe rings can move freely,z. Gas cylinder. Using a suitable brush (figure 34)clean the gas cylinder. Dry th e cylinder bore with clean dry patches.Use no abrasives in cleaning the cylinder and do no t oil the interiorsurfaces.

    ... Gas Piston. Saturate patches with bore cleaner andwipe the exterior surface of the piston as clean as possible. The pistondoes no t need to have a shiny surface to function properly. Do not useabrasives to clean the piston.

    JJ,. Bolt Face. Clean the face of the bolt with a patchand bore cleaner. Remove the bore cleaner with a dry patch, and oilthe bolt lightly.

    lQ_. Bolt Carrier. Remove all carbon and foreign materialsfrom th e bolt carrier with a patch dampened with bore cleaner. Wipeof f the bolt carrier with dry patches and apply a light coat of oil .

    .!!. Receiver Assembly and Trigger Housing Assembly.Inspect both assemblies for dirt and brass filings, Clean both assemblieswith a suitable brush (figure 34) and oil all surfaces lightly. Place a dropof oil on each of the pins in th e trigger housing assembly for lubrication.Jl. Ejector. The ejector is spring actuated. It isimportant that it have free movement. Lightly oil ejector assembly beforeinserting it into the receiver recess. Visually inspect and manuallyoperate for proper function. Dirt, brass filings, or lack of lubricationmay hinder proper function .

    (2) Place th e safety into its proper position inside the triggerguard and slide i t forward.

    (3) Depressing the rear of the sear, insert th e trigger from thetop of the trigger housing an d replace the trigger pin (figure 28).

    (4) Replace the trigger housing cover (figure 27), and t te remaining trigger pins. (Trigger pins are interchangeable) .

    (5) Align the trigger pins, an d push the extended edge of th elock plate to th e rear. The front edge of th e lock plate should be flushwith th e forward edge of th e trigger housing, an d the lock plate tang shouldbe seated in th e lock plate tang hole (figure 25) .

    . Assembly of the Stock to the Trigger Housing Group.(1) Replace th e stock by inserting it in the rear of the trigger

    housing group .(2) Insert the stock retaining pi n (figure 24) .

    .!. Assembly of th e Carrier-Piston Assembly.(l) Replace the bolt in th e bolt carrier with the ejector groove in

    the bolt facing toward the cam track in the bolt carrier.(2) Insert the cam pin through th e ca m track an d into th e cam pin

    hole in th e bolt. The flat side of th e cam pin guide lug must be in linewith th e lower side of th e bolt carrier (figure 22).

    (3) Replace the firing pin in the bolt carrier and pushing in on therear of the firing Pi!1, rotate the carrier cap assembly 1/4 turn clockwiselocking th e firing pin in the forward position.NOTE: FIRING PIN MUST BE PUSHED IN WHILE TURNING CARRIER CAP.

    Assembly of the Cocking Handle, Barrel, Feed Tray, Feed Cover,and Forestock Assemblies with th e Receiver Group.

    (1) Replace the cocking handle (figure 19) , by aligning th e disassembly notches with the cocking handle guide an d lug.

    (2) Replace the barrel assembly by depressing the barrel latchand inserting the barrel into the receiver group (figure 18) insuring that thesight boss is aligned with the gas cylinder. Lock the barrel into place byreleasing the barrel latch.

    (3) Replace the feed tray assembly (figure 16).(4) Replace the feed cover assembly an d insert th e feed cover

    i_. Replacing the Trigger Group to the Receiver Group.(1) Align th e trigger housing group and receiver holes, and insert

    the pivot pin screw and nu t (figure 14) ..s. Replacing the Driving Spring, Carrier, Piston and Bolt Assemblies.

    (1) Align the piston rod with th e gas cylinder and insert the boltcarrier in th e matching grooves of th e receiver. The bolt ca m pin mustbe in line with th e top rail of the bolt carrier before inserting th e assemblyinto th e receiver.

    (2) Hold th e receiver with the gas cylinder pointing down and allowthe assembly to slide in as far as it can go.

    (3) Insert the driving spring (figure 12) assembly into the recess inthe piston rod.

    (4) Pull the takedown pin (figure 11) out as far as it will go.(S) Rotate the trigger housing group up (figure 12) and lock it to

    th e receiver group by pushing the takedown pin in.

    h. Functioning test .(1) A function test will be performed after assembly of the weapon.(2) A function check of th e weapon consists of checking its

    operations while the safety is in th e "Safe" and "Firing" positions. Thefollowing sequence will be followed:

    a. Clear th e weapon. Place the safety on "Safe" . Pull thecocking handle to the rear. Return the cocking handle to its locked position.Pull the trigger. The operating parts should no t go into battery.

    b. Place the safety in its forward "Off" position. Pull thetrigger. The operating parts should go into battery.
