We mostly associate retaining walls with dry-land structures, however most water-based systems such as canal walls, detention basins and drop-structures are in fact retaining structures with a few extra design challenges thrown in such as inundation, saturated conditions, and design life. The StoneStrong Big Block System in unmatched in these water-based applications. The blocks have a 100 year design life and, as you can see by the accompanying photos, are totally suited to these applications.

We are pleased to welcome Charmaine Fogarty to the team at Concrib. Charmaine takes up the position of Sales and Marketing Manager. She brings a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience as a result of over 20 years in senior positions in the Civil Construction industry.

PROJECT PROFILE – BRENTWOOD GABION STRUCTURE.Located in a high growth corridor south-west

of Brisbane, Brentwood Forest Estate has

become home to thousands of new residents

and households. Stages 20 to 24 of the

development were recently constructed –

from late 2015 and into the second quarter

of 2016 – by BMD Urban Pty Ltd. An essential

part of the overall infrastructure for the

community called for the efficient

management of stormwater run-off; this was

quite substantial due to the number of houses

and the topography of the site. An integrated

system comprising of an overland flow

channel and three bio-retention basins collect

run-off from the site. This flow would

ultimately be directed to a natural overland

flow path at the bottom of the site. The major

issue presented here was the near 18 metre

change in levels over approximately 65 linear

metres, steep terrain indeed.

The development construction contractor, BMD

Urban engaged Concrib to provide a complete

turnkey design, construction and certification

contract to offer a solution to the transport of the

run-off and cope with a I in 100 flow event. Concrib,

working with ADG Engineers and Geoinventions

Consulting proposed a massive gabion spillway and

cascade drop structure to tame the flow.

The solution also incorporated a gabion and rock

chute at the base to discharge to the natural flow

path. This truly impressive structure was constructed

When it comes to selecting the best retaining structure for your project, the process is never simple. And when you’re searching for a product that offers a good balance between cost and quality it can seem impossible.

How do you distinguish which products offer true VALUE for your money?

This is where it becomes important to investigate how well the product complies with Australian standards. BUT…

While there ARE standards, there is little enforcement. So the risk is, if you aren’t diligent with your supplier, you could run the risk of deterioration or even failure.

For instance, if the reinforcement steel used in your wall is incorrectly placed (without bar chairs), you can’t be sure that the steel has the correct positioning within the structural element. AND will it have the right amount of cover?

What about the galvanising on the steel posts ? There are standards… And then there are standards…When making your choice, don’t simply accept a claim of “compliant with Australian standards” at face value. It is important to drill down and find out exactly which Australian standards apply.

For instance, the AS3600 standard is a standard for concrete products, AS4680 is for galvanising, and AS4100 relates to steel structures. Products used in retaining structures need to comply with the relevant standard to meet the requirements of AS4678 standard that applies specifically to retaining walls, and compliance with this standard ensures that the wall is durable, appropriate for the load, and suitable for your area of application (e.g. near the sea or in areas with a high risk of chemical corrosion).
