What an extraordinary year for Stonewall Columbus and the nation! In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court issued two historic decisions, returning marriage equality to California

and overturning a key provision of the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act.” Although we celebrated this victory with our Central Ohio community, we were completely aware of how far behind Ohio is in our fight for equality.

“Pride Changes Lives” was the theme of our annual Pride celebration in 2013, and over 300,000 people participated in the two day Festival and March. Stonewall Columbus Pride is one of the largest in the country and has a huge economic impact on our city, bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors and

dollars to Columbus each year. Dollars raised go right back into the community center to provide programs and services for families, individuals, youth, and seniors.

The Center expanded its mental health programming to include a full-time counselor. In partnership with ADAMH and North Central Mental Health, counseling services became available to persons with no ability to pay or those who qualify for Medicaid. This new and inclusive service at the Center allowed us directly to impact and improve the lives of over 100 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied citizens.

The Center is the first stop for many who are looking for resources as they seek to build families of choice and fight discrimination in their everyday lives. Stonewall’s leadership is attentive to these needs and alters our service delivery each year to meet them. Stonewall Columbus founded a new

speaker’s bureau through a grant from UPS. This program will enable us to do outreach to schools, universities, hospitals, churches, civic centers, and businesses that wish to include cultural competency training in their organizations. Our senior program grew exponentially since its inception in 2012, from 20 participants to 250 in 2013. Our health initiative, in partnership with Walgreens and the James Cancer Center, was extremely successful in offering screenings and flu shots to the uninsured. The lack of health care for the low income person can be very life-threatening but with the Affordable Care Act and our new designation as an ACA Certified Application Organization, Stonewall was able to help hundreds of people sign up on the marketplace exchange and receive benefits.

Our Columbus City Council stepped up in a huge way in 2013, to provide $50,000 in capital improvement funds to the Center. Stonewall Columbus Board of Trustees set

forth a comprehensive strategic plan that will enable us to grow and to face the challenges that lie ahead. More and more LGBT youth are finding themselves homeless, and our seniors are being discarded without the proper resources to age in place. Our community center will be there to meet those future needs and to make every effort to enhance the quality of life for all in our Columbus community.

OUR 2013 PROGRAMS

Film Festival 2013Stonewall Columbus showcased three nights of award-winning films that speak to the issues that our LGBT community faces.

Health and Wellness ExpoThis expo gave people the opportunity to meet with vendors from all aspects of the health care community—from The Wexner Medical Center to The Reiki Center for Energy Healing.

Stonewall Columbus – the leading visionary, inclusive, and fun-spirited LGBT organization in Central Ohio – sets the pace for increasing the visibility and acceptance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. We continue to be the driving force on LGBT issues and our Center is the first stop for many in the LGBT and allied community.

In response to community need, Stonewall routinely adds programs to our growing roster, facilitates ever-increasing numbers visiting the Center, increases visibility for other agencies, and brings new and innovative perspectives to our service delivery. It is our intent to continually expand programming so that community members seeking a variety of services and activities – in addition to the base services and ongoing support groups we offer – can find ways to connect with others in a safe, comfortable and culturally enriching environment.

As the leading organization on LGBT issues in the Central Ohio area, we have made countless strides in educating the larger community, increasing social awareness, and collaborating on political advocacy by providing stronger programs, services, and alternative social activities. As we move towards an exciting milestone of celebrating 32 years in the community, we are building on past accomplishments, developing sustainable systems and growth processes and focusing on strengthening not only

our agency, but the Central Ohio LGBT and allied community by enhancing our Community Center, The Center on High.

Stonewall Columbus exists because of our strong partnerships with other agencies, our tireless supporters, and the many volunteers and community members that generously give of their time, talents, and support. We look forward to partnering with our Columbus community so that we may jointly improve the lives of those we serve.

Stonewall Columbus continues to lead the fight in Central Ohio for equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals. The Board and staff accomplish this through implementing Stonewall’s strategic plan and concentrating on its brand elements of being visionary, inclusive, and fun-spirited. Through compassionate and intelligent planning, resource prioritization, and increased service delivery, Stonewall has consistently succeeded in reaching greater numbers of the LGBT and allied community in Central Ohio.

Trailblazers GroupThe Trailblazers is a program at Stonewall Columbus for LGBT Adults ages 50+ that was initially created through a generous gift from The Legacy Fund. The Trailblazer calendar is packed each month with exciting and fun activities: theatre and dance performances, museum and arts outings, historical tours and mix and mingle events. Union Bar + Food graciously provides food for many of our gatherings. This year our quarterly day trip took us to Blennerhassett Island in Parkersburg, WV where we toured the historical Blennerhassett Hotel, rode the Island Belle Sternwheeler to Blennerhassett Island, toured the Blennerhassett Mansion and enjoyed a fun, horse-drawn wagon ride of the Island. The day ended with happy hour and dinner at the Blennerhassett Hotel.

Speakers Bureau Begins (UPS Grant)The Stonewall Columbus Speakers Bureau is a peer facilitated program that is designed to help different audiences learn more about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) identities and experiences. Stonewall Columbus offers 60-90 minute presentations to any organization, business, church or school that would like to raise awareness about the local LGBTQ community and the history of the LGBTQ equal rights movement while exploring ways to be an effective ally in the workplace and community spheres.

Women’s Coming Out Group BeginsThis is a discussion group for women of all ages to share their issues with coming out and provide a place to meet others who may be going through the same transition.

Loss Group BeginsThis group is facilitated by a mental health professional and was created to help members of our community process and deal with loss in their lives or any other situation that creates feelings of loneliness, sadness and isolation.

Immigration SeminarsWe presented seminars by legal professionals which assisted gay immigrants and/or couples regarding vital information about the changing nature of immigration law after DOMA was repealed.

Parenting Legal SeminarStonewall Columbus offered this seminar to advise LGBT parents and parents-to-be about the changing landscape of family law with regard to same-sex couples and children.
