THE first Speakers’ Corner to be built in London foralmost 150 years has found a home in Walthamstow.
The new Speakers’ Corner in Stoneydown Park,Walthamstow, is the brainchild of the Speakers’ CornerTrust, the Friends of Stoneydown Park and the two prima-ry schools near the park.
The Speakers’ Corner was designed by students fromCentral St Martins College of Art and Design and built byWaltham Forest Council and contractors MitreConstruction as part of a £30,000 package of improve-ments in the park.
The site was officially opened on Friday by a host ofdignitaries before local schoolchildren took over the stageand each spoke about a chosen subject.
Chairman of Stoneydown Speakers’ Corner committee,James O’Rourke, was delighted the Speakers’ Corner hadfinally been built.
He said: “It’s been a real community effort and I’d liketo thank everyone for their hard work and dedication.
“We’re really looking forward to the Speakers’ Cornerbeing a new focal point for the park, but it will also pro-vide an important platform for our community and I hopeit’s going to be in regular use.”
Waltham Forest Council’s cabinet member for leisure, arts and culture, Councillor Geraldine Reardon, said:“This is an excellent initiative which will stimulate debateand provide a forum for a wide range of issues to be raisedby residents.”
