Police were called to an incident in Omnibus Way on Saturday, at approxi- mately 10.50pm where a girl had been raped in an alleyway leading to Chester Mews. She was attacked by two men. The new Speakers’ Corner in Stoneydown Park, Walthamstow, is the brainchild of the Speakers’ Corner Trust, the Friends of Stoneydown Park and the two prima- ry schools near the park. The Speakers’ Corner was designed by students from Central St Martins College of Art and Design and built by Waltham Forest Council and contractors Mitre Construction as part of a £30,000 package of improve- ments in the park. The site was officially opened on Friday by a host of dignitaries before local schoolchildren took over the stage and each spoke about a chosen subject. Chairman of Stoneydown Speakers’ Corner committee, James O’Rourke, was delighted the Speakers’ Corner had finally been built. He said: “It’s been a real community effort and I’d like to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication. “We’re really looking forward to the Speakers’ Corner being a new focal point for the park, but it will also pro- vide an important platform for our community and I hope it’s going to be in regular use.” Waltham Forest Council’s cabinet member for leisure, arts and culture, Councillor Geraldine Reardon, said: “This is an excellent initiative which will stimulate debate and provide a forum for a wide range of issues to be raised by residents.” For more information on the new feature, visit www.stoneydownspeakerscorner.co.uk NEW SPEAKERS’ CORNER OPENS TALK: Committee chairman James O’Rouke at the corner and (bottom left) children get their chance to speak. THE first Speakers’ Corner to be built in London foralmost 150 years has found a home in Walthamstow.

The new Speakers’ Corner in Stoneydown Park,Walthamstow, is the brainchild of the Speakers’ CornerTrust, the Friends of Stoneydown Park and the two prima-ry schools near the park.

The Speakers’ Corner was designed by students fromCentral St Martins College of Art and Design and built byWaltham Forest Council and contractors MitreConstruction as part of a £30,000 package of improve-ments in the park.

The site was officially opened on Friday by a host ofdignitaries before local schoolchildren took over the stageand each spoke about a chosen subject.
