KINDS OF STORAGE MEDIAA. Magnetic Storage
Hard Disks
stores data on a flat rigid disk made of stacked aluminum or glass disk coated with magnetic oxide.
data are stored on disks and tape by magnetizing selected particles of an oxidized-based surface coating.

KINDS OF STORAGE MEDIA
Magnetic Disksstores data on a flexible circular disk covered with a thin layer of magnetic oxide. This is commonly known as floppy-disk or diskette.
5.25” Mini Floppy
3.5” Micro Floppy

3. Magnetic Tape
-stores data on flat continuous ribbon coated with magnetic oxide. Commonly in the form of cassette tape drive used for audio recording and playback.

B. Thumb Drive, Flash Drive, USB Stick
-stores data on through the use of USB (Universal Serial Bus).
Storage capacity will range from:1GB to 32GB
-USB was designed to replace serial ports and parallel ports. USB 1.0 data rate 12 Million bits per second
USB 2.0 added a higher bandwidth of 480 Mbps. Allows data transfer

STORAGE CAPACITY- It is the maximum amount of data that can be stored in a storage medium.
Data is stored in a storage media in BYTES
Each character (including space) = 1 byte
How many bytes are there in A BURGER?
Answer: 8
![Page 10: STORAGE MEDIA & STORAGE DEVICES BASIC TERMS: Recording or saving data future use. Store/Save device that holds the data or information. Storage Media](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103111/551786aa5503463e368b5356/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The capacity is usually measured in:
• kilobyte (KB) = to about 1,000 bytes
• gigabyte (GB) = to about 1 Billion bytes• megabyte (MB) = to about 1,000,000 bytes
How many bytes are there
in 720KB?
Answer: 720,000 bytes
How many bytes are there in 800MB?
Answer: 800,000,000 bytes
How many bytes are there in 40GB?
Answer: 40,000,000,000 bytes
• terabyte (TB) = to about 1 Trillion bytes

TYPES ACCORDING TO CAPACITY
Storage Media Capacity
Mini-Floppy:360K or 1 MB
Micro Floppy: 720K or 1.44MB
Capacity may vary from 80GB to 2 TB

REFLECTION:
Rapid technological advances easily
obsolete electronic equipment.

Out of 175 million computers comes a laundry list of TOXINS:
650 million pounds of LEAD
987,000 pounds of CADMIUM
231,000 pounds of MERCURY
billion pounds of PLASTIC

How can we MINIMIZE the rapid waste contributions of computer electronics to our
environment?
