History[edit]

In 1970 Simon and Garfunkel decided to part ways and record their own solo material.

In June of 1972 they were asked to sing at a political benefit concert for United States presidential candidate George McGovern at Madison Square Garden, New York City.[1]

By 1975 Simon had decided to prepare material for a new solo album. The music was a bit more personal, but one song was written in particular with Garfunkel specifically in mind. He has been quoted as saying: "It originally was a song I was writing for Artie. I was gonna write a song for his new album, and I told him it would be a nasty song, because he was singing too many sweet songs. It seemed like a good concept for him."[2] After playing the song for Garfunkel, the two decided to collaborate again in the studio on this one track.

Simon has stated that the song is not autobiographical; instead he says that it is about "someone who hates the town he grew up in. Somebody happy to get out."[2]

Garfunkel has explained that the song was about his own childhood, how he "grew up in an area where a career in music was not seen as either desirable nor exciting".[citation needed] Garfunkel's parents

insisted he gain some qualification aside from his singing (he earned a bachelors degree in arts history in 1965, and a master's degree in mathematics in 1967). Garfunkel, upon the break-up of the duo, worked as a teacher in Connecticut, a draftsman in New York and a math tutor in Los Angeles, before working on a solo album himself, coincidentally, at the same time as Simon.

The song references the lines of a Ted Hughes poem (quoted in liner notes to Paul Simon's release of the song: "To hatch a crow, a black rainbow/Bent in emptiness/over emptiness/But flying"), the song relates the town's sameness suggesting even the colors of the rainbow there are black. The final verse describes the narrator feeling like "just my father's son...twitching like a finger on the trigger of a gun/leaving nothing but the dead and dying back in my little town".

The song starts off very quietly, beginning with a piano solo (by Garfunkel), and light drumwork. They begin to sing together (there are no solo parts), with Paul Simon providing a subdued bass guitar line. The choruses of "nothin' but the dead and dyin' back in my little town" are played with an increased intensity, especially the final repeat-and-fadeout section following the last verse, with some horns and backing vocals added to the mix.

On October 18, 1975, Simon hosted the second episode of the premiere season of the NBC comedy sketch program Saturday Night Live. During the musical numbers, Garfunkel performed with him, and together they sang three songs: "The Boxer"; "Scarborough Fair"; and their new collaboration, simply titled "My Little Town".[3]

Charts[edit]

The buzz surrounding the surprise reunion of the two singers helped to generate anticipation for each of their solo albums, which were released within a few weeks of the performance on Saturday Night Live. Credited on both albums as being performed by 'Simon & Garfunkel', "My Little Town" became the duo's eighth top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in late 1975, peaking at number nine.[4] It spent two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart, and was their second number one on this survey as a duo.[2] Both singers have hit number one on the adult contemporary chart as solo performers as well, Garfunkel four times and Simon twice.

I have been to Little Town on four different occasions and have yet to be disappointed. Everyone is super knowledgeable about the local brews and helps you pick the one that best suites you. And (fair warning-this is dramatic) I really feel that the rice balls are life changing for this Irish girl from Philly.

The food always comes out hot and at the right pace. Best of all, the servers are all young, energetic and always have a smile on their faces. I will definitely be back!

Terrible service. Mediocre food. I was optimistic about this place because a few friends had recommended it. After putting our names down to be seated outside, my girlfriend and I took a seat at the bar. The bar was not packed maybe 5-7 people sitting with a moderate crowd at tables. (Outside was packed but that not saying much when there is only a few tables).

We waited for the bar tender for about 10 minutes before he came over to even offer us a drink menu. 25 minutes later the couple next to us told us we should get out while we can. The service is terrible.

We ended up leaving shortly there after and wasted 30 minutes of my time. Don't recommend.

I was hoping the reviews were wrong. I wanted this place to be stellar. Great location with a fantastic view. But the wow factor ended at the door.

My friend and I ordered apps (the trio tower and Manzo balls) and they were just okay. I wasn't impressed. Not given a ton of food considering we were sharing although there were about 6 Manzo balls in the order. They were the only item that was good.

We also ordered two flights of beer, to try some of the brews they were "known for". My friend got his in the standard chilled flight glasses, while I got mine in warm rocks glasses. I didn't even get to finish them all because my beer was warm by the time I got to the third one. Call me a snot but there's nothing worse than warm beer. The waitress said that they were "out" of flight trays at that moment. I looked around and of the dozen other customers in the place, not one of them were drinking flights. ::crickets::

The dessert was a swing and a miss too. The Zeppoles were overcooked and the brownie sundae was sad. My friend was super disappointed because they made it with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla. I helped him get through it and he luckily lived to tell his tale.

The only highlight in my opinion was the blueberry margarita. It was very refreshing - made with muddled blueberries. I was happy! Then I saw on the bill that the were $10 each (they came in small mason jars and displaced with a ton of ice) and I was sad again. Our whole bill was $94 and upon seeing that we hated life at that exact moment and painfully took out our cards to pay.

In all, it was not worth the price. We didn't even have a full meal so whhhhyyyy were things that pricey? WHYYYYY.

My first encounter at Little Town was terrible. No hostess paid any attention to people waiting no letting them know possibly how long it would be- so I left. My 2nd encounter, friends and I sat outside. No other tables outside but waitress took about 10 min to come over and greet us. Thereafter it only went downhill. Forgetting drink orders, brought an appetizer but never returned to get our dinner order. Old fashion cocktail my friend had ordered came back different every time. What a mess this place is. Everyone is running around like chickens without a head - and it was not even busy! They have such a great location and it is beyond a let down. Don't bother.

I can't wait to come back! Explored Hoboken over the weekend and this joint definitely grabbed my attention. The aura is amazing. You definitely must try the LT burger with a glass of Malbec. There's live music, outside seating and good vibes. Who wouldn't want that? Prices are decent and hostess are super friendly! =)

Mediocre food , nice location.

Menu choices are nothing excitable, baked clams had too much mushy bread crumb topping & salmon pesto dish was fine.

Would return for outdoor drinks, suggest skipping the food

Amazing menu selection. Every time I go, I try something new and am always happy.

The atmosphere is really cool here too and if you are a Bravo fan like myself, you see an occasional RHONJ sighting with the Manzo family.

What is the most neat about little town is literally everything from the food ingredients to the beer is made from Jersey! #jerseypride

I was hoping for a great experience, but honestly it was just bad. From the service to drinks/food it was really bad. Service was really slow and our food came out horrible. We had burnt buns for our sandwiches and our sweet potato fries were not even cooked! Our waitress even agreed with us... Don't waste your money.

The drinks were fine and the service was mediocre at best. No air conditioning, the place was stinky and humid. The restaurant was unclean, especially the patio. I was kicking garbage around under my table. What a joke.

I would never consider eating at an establishment with such flagrant disregard for basic cleanliness.

Many of my friends told me Little Town had terrible service, mediocre food and an awful beer selection. Despite this, I decided to give them a chance.

I wish I hadn't.

So the menu isn't all that impressive, a lot of the same stuff over and over. That would be alright if it wasn't for the service. Our waitress was nowhere to be found after taking our initial drink order. I ordered a regular bloody mary and she came back with a spicy (diablo) bloody mary. Needless to say, it was an unpleasant surprise. I would have been alright if the mistakes ended there. Nope. We ordered a hummus appetizer and it never came. I ordered the omlette with no goat cheese. Sure enough, there was goat cheese. I believe our waitresses name was Maggie. Sorry to call you out Maggie, but your service was awful.

Next let's talk about their beer selection - it blows. I don't want to drink some crappy jersey microbrew. My friend asked for a Miller and she said she had no miller, but had an equivalent. It was gross. They need to get some normal beers on tap that people actually enjoy.

Needless to say, I'll never be coming back here.

The food here is nothing amazing. They specialize in "NJ fare" but I find myself asking what that even means considering the food here is over-cooked and just super salty.

The meatballs are delicious and so were the disco fries and I would have loved my burger had it not been well done when I asked for it medium rare. Our server was completely unattentive otherwise I would have asked for a new one but she we too busy flirting with the bartender and texting on her phone. I run a restaurant and nightclub not far away myself; take note deary, I don't forget a face so when you are coming into my establishment for a job, I will remember you.

It was a slow Tuesday lunch so one would think you would be on your best behavior when it is super obvious as a paying guest to see we aren't getting good service. We had to ask the hostess to get our waiter for us after sitting there for at least 10 minutes without having been greeted.

I've been here once before and the experience was mediocre at best and this was basically my finally conclusion; don't come back.

Went to Little Town while in Hoboken on a beautiful May day. My friend and I sat outside enjoying our view of NYC and was pleasantly surprised that the food matched the great view. We started off with the calamari which was not over fried as many tend to be. They were seasoned just right and I didn't even use the marinara sauce. We both ordered the Rum and Boylan's black cherry drink which I thought was a fun twist on the usual rum and coke. For dinner we stuck to sandwiches and had their version of an Italian sandwich and a veggie wrap. They were both very good and filling. The home made chips were delicious as well.

The service as many have stated is just ok. Nothing special at all and didn't really come around which was surprising since the patio was practically empty.

Overall wasn't a bad experience, I was pleasantly surprised over the food and as a Jersey girl, appreciated all the Jersey Italian fare on the menu and on the drink list supporting our businesses. Just need to tighten up the service and it would be even better.

I avoid downtown HBK at all costs but my mom & niece (7 yr old) were staying at the W so my husband and I decided to grab some beers here while we waited for them to arrive around 6/7 on a Friday. Our expectations were super low, especially since we read about how "horrendous" the service was.

Couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised!

Firstly, the beers, all NJ breweries (who knew?), were good, taps tasted clean. Had NJ wine too. Bartenders decent. When we decided to stay & eat there and sat down, service was actually excellent. Our server checked on us often despite it being quite crowded by then. Zero complaints. Food was good too - nothing spectacular, but everyone was happy. And they gave my niece free funnel cake!

We saw both Manzo brothers walking the floor too. My mom about died. Kudos.

There's skee ball too, decent tunes (loud, but lively scene), so good for kids too!

All in all, brava.

1 star for the location (can't go wrong with a waterfront view of NYC) and the other star for the 'twice had many moons ago fantastic classic' disco fries...so that equals two stars for those of you that are counting out there.

I really do want to like this place since I live in the same building directly above it, but it fails me every 4th month I go there when I try to "see if things have changed for the better like an ex-flame you had hoped would change their ways but never did" kind of thing.

If Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior was reincarnated and came back as Robert Irvine (commonly known as 'that jacked dude from the Food Network show Restaurant: Impossible'), he would kick this place in the nuts, bring back that original disco fries' recipe, and quit being cute with the "jersey-centric" food and just make decent food the jersey way (whatever that means).

I'm due back for my tri-annual visit soon, so we shall see what has transpired since my last three calorie trek to this establishment.

Had a great happy hour here on a Thursday evening, and there was an area set aside for us. The server kept all our drinks straight (kudos to her as we were a massive group). And the spicy wings were perfectly spicy (i.e. HOT).

Love that they have a skee-ball machine too!

Food was not bad. Bathrooms were DISGUSTING. If the bathrooms were that bad, imagine how gross the kitchen must be! Even when managers were noticed, didn't get any better. 1) Had reservations for 7 people at 8:30 - didn't get seated until 9:05 (the hostess was very nice and apologized a few times).

2) Waitress sucked - barely came by to get drink orders. When we asked for utensils she dropped them down next to my plate and asked me to pass them over to everyone (and acted annoyed that we even asked for them in the first place). Friend ordered one salad and they brought out a completely different one because the waitress didn't mention that they were out of the one she ordered. Why wouldn't she tell my friend that in the first place and have her order a different one??

3) When we got the check and we were charged for the mistake-salad AND a few other things that we never ordered. Flagged down the manager to complain and he gave us 10% off the bill. What he SHOULD have done was given us the salad for free (she had to wait 15 mins for the new one to arrive) and then an additional 10% for the poor service and having us wait over 1/2 hour for our reserved table - in the least.

Food was meh, service TERRIBLE, do not go. They just lost 7 customers.

Came here for Happy Hour last week. There wasn't much of a crowd until about 8:30, 9pm. The drinks were made well and not watered down (always a plus). The bar area was a nice chill area to hang out at with a few friends. The outdoor view was beautiful. We ordered french fries and chicken fingers to hold us over. The fries were delicious and crispy. The Chicken fingers were burnt and chunky. I wouldnt recommend them to anyone.

Overall I would give this place one more shot before I decided completely if I like it or not.

The service needs work. Example: I asked for a menu, picked my choices, get the bartenders attention to order 5 minutes later (max), as I attempt to place my order I am informed that the kitchen JUST closed. Seriously?! I wanted to order the $0.99 oysters until 11PM as listed on the menu. I tried to place my order at 10:30 PM on the dot (I checked the time twice). Little Town, you couldn't pay the cook to say an extra 30 minutes?! That's just lazy.

Otherwise this place has good beer and decor, but Hoboken is full of that.

"Pleasantly Surprised"

I decided to try Little Town because I was staying at the W Hotel with my wife for her birthday. We took a beautiful walk along the river to Little Town. We were graciously greeted at the door by the hostess and seated promptly. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with NJ artifacts and memorabilia. They have a fantastic selection of beers and all the beers on tap are Jersey breweries. We actually came on tthe 1st night of their new menu. You have to try the stuffed

zucchini flowers disco fries and the rice balls. For dinner I had a BLT. Crazy right? "Why?" you ask. Because it is pork belly and bacon and lettuce on 2 slices of toasted sourdough bread. Oh and we were there with a party of six and and everybody had a great dinner. One of the other favorite dinners was the truffled filet. Then for desert we had deep fried Oreos and funnel cake! Absolutely delicious and a perfect meal. Service was excellent. We had an unbelievable perfect night. Oh and the view is beautiful. read less

I have been so anxious to go try this place.. I went with my hubby and my son (20months) .. We went at about 3pm on Presidents' Day.. About 5 other tables of people. I gave 4/5 because our service was abit slow even though there were not many other tables.. I asked for a drink menu and was told there wasn't one.. So I ordered a basic Cosmo (it was delish) but I later found a cocktail menu on the table which I would have like to order from.. Ah well.

The food was amazing. We split the meatball app it was such a nostalgic feeling for me. Tastes just like my grandmothers Sunday sauce meatballs. I was very happy! Came with garlic toast, abit over cooked but the garlic taste was perfect..

I had the deluxe burger and fries it was great.. Tasted fresh.

Hubby had the "farmers daughter" wrap.. He was very happy with it!

My son had the corn dog and fries and he was very pleased.. My only down for that was there was only one corn dog (abit over cooked) and SO MANY FRIES) I'd be happier with maybe two smaller corn dogs mans less fries? Hmm

We ordered the zeppole for dessert.. Yummy!

Next time I go I'll look for that drink menu and want to hit up that skii ball!! :)

All in all a good experience.

This place could be great but the service is HORRENDOUS!!! It must be a prerequisite to have barely a brain to work there because the waitresses are clueless and take their damn time to even greet you.

The menu is pretty solid and we love the local NJ concept however, it's torture having to wait SO long for food.

After today's horrible service for the millionth time, you have lost us. Even though your grilled cheese is the best I've ever had!

What a shit show. Not only did it take or waiter forever to take or order, but the menu sucks. You don't have 2 different burgers that are essentially the same as different items. Just make 1 burger listing and have people choose between the normal or 8 oz one. Very boring menu.

They list only craft beers on the menu also which is fine, but they have no descriptions. No one knows these shit micro brews. Our waiter tried to recommend a beer to me. I told him I drink a lot of light beer and Sam Adams. He said that one of the beers there is like Coors light. Who the hell wants a micro brew like Coors? Who the hell wants Coors to begin with?

Our food was horrible. I asked for a burger cooked medium. It was charred black. They gave me a small tin of ketchup the size of a shot glass for a burger and fries. The bun was hard like it was stale. No utensils were brought to us either. The Manzos own this place; they're rich. They're too cheap to put out ketchup bottles for each table? WTF?

The entire time there was shitty 50s music blasting. And I mean blasting. The level that the music is at a club. Horrible.

The bathrooms had 1 light working, maybe 2. It felt like a place someone gets raped in at 3am.

Overall this place is a glorified shitty dinner with bad decorations, bad food, bad service, and annoying atmosphere. At least it was cheap. Wouldn't go back.

Pretty bummed about this place. I was excited by the menu but my first choice was sold out. When I asked for chicken tenders in wing sauce I was told that the chef was too busy catering to a big group. I guess our table of 6 doesn't rank. Really left a bad impression.

DONT BOTHER! Service was terrible. Asked for a table outside but was told no tables were available for two... 2 other couples came in and were sat RIGHT IN FRONT OF US while we sat and waited inside at a table away from the bar. When an outside hightop table finally became available after waiting 20 min we waited another 10 for anyone to acknowledge us. A normal table opened up and we asked to move to it but the hostess stated it was reserved for a couple with a dog. A...DOG! The people who ended up at that table did not have a dog with them. At that point we realized we were being jerked around so we finished the beer we got at the bar and left. It's not worth the view.

1 check-in here

I came here for a Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser Event. It was good turn out. Can't say I enjoyed the drinks Cuz I only had 2 glasses of white wine.

The service was bad and I attribure it to the fact that the fundraiser took up the whole back bar and the poor girl was by herself. The fundraiser was good. A portion of the bar sales went to BBBS so we ordered from her. She said 'you have to come get your food when it's ready' WHAT?!?! It's ok.

We ordered garbage wings, Belleville Beeps and Manzo's Balls. The wings were all sloppy and good and sloppy and good. Yummy! It was a mix of BBQ sauce, spicy sauce and blue cheese. Delish. The Manzo balls were great. Very nice combination of sauce and balls. The bread served with ir was nice and toasty. The Beeps (shrimp) could be tastier. Kinda bland shrimp with flavorful sauce.

The atmosphere was nice. Decor was very classy old school NJ pictures. Definitely coming back for sit down service.
