Governor’s Message Posted by Peter Tang on Feb 09, 2012

Greetings my fellow Rotarians

World Understanding Month

The month of February is special in the Rotary calendar since it is designated World

Understanding Month. The month also includes the anniversary of the first meeting of

Rotary held on 23 February 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace

Day.

Programs GSE, YE, Scholarships, (Peace and ambassadorial), Friendship exchanges, volunteers

In designating World Understanding Month, the Rotary International board asks all Rotary clubs to

plan programs for their weekly meetings and undertake special activities to

emphasise “understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace”.

To observe this designated month, your club may arrange international speakers, invite Youth

Exchange students and international scholars from schools and universities to club meetings, plan

programs featuring former Group Study Exchange team members, arrange discussions on global

issues, present entertainment with an international cultural or artistic theme, and schedule other

programs with an international emphasis.

Many clubs take the opportunity to launch an international community service activity or make contact

with a Rotary club in another country.  It is a good month to initiate a Rotary Friendship Exchange, a 3-

H project or encourage support for Polio-Plus and other Rotary Foundation programs.

World Understanding Month is a chance for every club to pause, plan and promote the Fourth Avenue

of Service - Rotary’s continued quest for goodwill, peace and understanding among people of the

world.

Rotary’s 107th Anniversary is celebrated on 23 February and that day is designated as “World

Understanding and Peace Day”.  It is a special day to focus on our Objective of building of peace and

Goodwill around the globe.

At district level we have, on 23 February, the first of our three showings of the movie “The Best Exotic

February at the Macquarie Centre, and on Sunday 26 February – in the morning at the Mandarin

Centre in Chatswood and in the early evening at the Avoca Beach Theatre.  Further details are in the body of this newsletter and you can also go online for the details.

The Hamiltons in India Posted by Les Walsh on Feb 04, 2012

Peter & Ann Hamilton of the Gosford North club are participating

in a Rotary Friendship Exchange with District 3040

Welcoming them at the airport were Dhiran Datta (Rotary

Friendhsip Exchange leader), Rajan Baveja (Chair International),

Mrs Madhuri (RFE Chair) , & Sanjay Burvey (President of teh local

club).

Located in the central India, Rotary District 3040 covers part of states of “Madhya Pradesh” & “Gujarat”.  It covers a large and diverse geographical area. There are unspoiled forests, rivers and mountains. Many historical places are situated here. This area has a rich tradition of art, handicrafts & tribal arts. It has ancient monuments and heritage places. It provides visitors with

a broad overview of Indian culture. People are friendly here and are known for their hospitality.

These exchanges are a great way to see another country and come to understand the culture and

way of life. The Rotarians in the district organise your itinerary, home host you and escort you around

their district ensuring you see the main tourist sites and gain an appreciation of their Rotary culture.

News from Rotary International Posted by Les Walsh on Feb 01, 2012

Read the President's February message about sharing Rotary's message. Include the message in

your club or district's newsletter and website.

"For many of us, Rotary is our only way to change the world. As individuals, there is little we can do

on our own, but when we join with our fellow Rotarians, we do make a difference."

Read more in the February message from the trustee chair.

Rotary receives about 2.5 million United airline miles for humanitarian projects

Thank you to all those at United for their generosity and the opportunity to participate in United's 10

Million Charity Miles Giveaway.  And thank you to everyone who voted for us.  We couldn't have done it without your participation and persistence.

For the miles giveaway, we officially came in second place and will receive 2,488,070 charity miles

from United. Rotarians will use the miles for humanitarian missions, such as transporting sick

children to hospitals.

Although the giveaway wasn't announced in advance, Rotarians and friends of Rotary quickly and

enthusiastically got the word out through social media, and we went from 18th place to second

place.  This enabled us to receive a larger portion of the 10 million airline miles that United was donating.  In addition, we congratulate the Shriners, who took first place.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - now 4 screenings Posted by Les Walsh on Feb 01, 2012

These screenings are fundraisers and will be conducted in Zones following 23

February - the release date for  the movie THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL.

The movie tells the story of a group of misfit British pensioners who are enticed to

retire to a fabulous hotel in Jaipur, India, where they are promised to live a life of

luxury for a bargain price.  Upon their arrival, they are dismayed to find that restoration of the once elegant Marigold Hotel has stalled.  There is water…sometimes.  And electricity…sometimes.  The hotel’s eager manager, a young

Indian entrepreneur, is quick to tell them that his ambitious renovation is going to

turn the place around.  Surprisingly, the retirees find themselves settling into this strange new world and creating bonds with each other.  What their new life lacks in luxury they come to find is plentiful in adventure, stunning beauty, peace and love.

This will be a fun event - screening on the Central Coast, The Hills, in the Northern Districts at

Macquarie, & on the North Shore at Chatswood.

Bringing business back to Rotary Posted by Les Walsh on Jan 28, 2012

Why did you join Rotary?  Chances are, one of the reason you joined was because you were in business, your friends were in business and there were opportunities for networking as well as making new friends for your business.  Looking around your community, it’s likely you will find many businesses and

services that all could be potential members.

Read the latest issue of Rotary on the Move to see why this is important.
