Dear Friends,   

Success means having the courage, determina on, and will to become the person you believe you were meant to be. At Easter Seals Maine, we strive to help our clients achieve success in all they do. Each of our clients has their own measure of success—a parent of a child with au sm may mark success when they are able to communicate more openly with their child and a young adult with developmental delays may  define success as securing meaningful employment for the first  me. No ma er how success is defined by our clients, we know we wouldn’t be able to reach these milestones without our caring and dedicated staff and our loyal and commi ed donors.   

As an organiza on, we measure our success in different ways each year and, this year, we certainly have a lot to be proud of. Twenty‐two children graduated from the All Aboard! Preschool into public kindergarten programs a er reaching the majority, if not all, of their educa onal goals. The Early Interven on and  Medical Rehabilita on programs provided over 6,500 hours of therapy for children birth to age five and over 6,600 hours of therapy was provided to children and adults through the Center for Therapeu c  Recrea on. Due to a lack of cer fied rehabilita on providers in York County, Easter Seals Maine con nued to receive a high volume of referrals from the Department of Voca onal Rehabilita on for employment services and the Youth Transi onal Services program was introduced and able to secure contracts with two York County School districts for the 2012‐2013 school year.  

The many successes and ongoing growth of Easter Seals Maine is also reflected in the number of grants we received from local and na onal founda ons. In total, almost $70,000 in grants was received to support children and adults with special needs and disabili es! Nearly all Maine programming is now impacted by founda on support on an annual basis, allowing us to serve more individuals, expand services, or start new programs.  

Today, we are not only looking back at our successes, but looking forward to the year ahead. We have  received the necessary approval to provide Case Management services to children and adults and,  In September, a founda on grant of $25,000 was awarded to Easter Seals Maine to fund comprehensive,  community‐based support to Maine Military Service members, veterans and their families in rural areas of York and Cumberland Coun es. We will proudly provide these services, in addi on to Early Interven on, the All Aboard! Preschool, the Center for Therapeu c Recrea on, Youth Transi onal Services and  Workforce Development in the coming year. As always, we will con nue to look to iden fy gaps in services throughout our communi es and do everything we can to successfully fill those gaps.

Message from the President & Chairman  A Year of Success Here’s to You, Easter Seals Maine — A sold‐out crowd of more than 300 gathered in  February for the first‐ever Toast on the Coast fundraiser. The event, held at The Landing at Pine Point, raised over $26,000 for Easter Seals Maine. Partygoers had a chance  to sample 145 different wines offered by Pine State Beverage Company and enjoy a variety of tasty hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants like Vignola, Amato’s, Zapoteca, Kitchen Chicks Catering and East End Cupcakes. In addi on to the outstanding food  and wine, a silent auc on offered an eclec c array of items including overnight stays, restaurant gi  cer ficates and beau ful artwork. We are grateful to everyone who made the inaugural Toast on the Coast a smashing success!  

Double the Milestones, Double the Fun Undeniably, twins have a very special rela onship and Mya and Asher Gray are no excep on. While their entry into this world was a bit of a surprise to their mom and dad, and there certainly hasn’t been a dull moment since, the Gray family is enjoying every step of their journey.  

Twenty weeks into their third pregnancy, April and Kevin Gray anxiously waited for the ultrasound  technician to tell them if they were expec ng a boy or a girl. With two boys at home already, they thought a li le girl would be fun, but, ul mately, they just wanted to make sure the baby April was carrying was healthy. Because this was their third child and things had progressed so smoothly for pregnancies one and two, they had waited un l the second trimester for their first ultrasound. To their complete surprise, Kevin and April weren’t just told the sex of the baby; they were told there were, in fact, two babies…the Grays were ecsta c!  

The twins were born close to full‐term, at 35 weeks, and Kevin and April and big brothers Zevin and William (or “ZaZa” and “Weeum” as they’re known to their younger siblings) were immediately wrapped up in the chaos and all‐consuming love that a family of six can bring.   

As Asher and Mya grew they appeared to be developing normally and reached typical milestones like si ng up and crawling. Their bond was clear, as they constantly snuggled and loved to sleep close together. It wasn’t un l their two‐year checkup, when their pediatrician raised a few concerns regarding their development, that April and Kevin realized something might be wrong. A er weeks of tests and sleepless nights, it was determined that Asher was on the au sm spectrum and Mya, in an effort to  progress alongside her brother, had developed her own communica on style and was diagnosed with a speech and language impairment. The Grays were, once again, surprised, but this  me they were also scared.   

“My biggest fear was that they wouldn’t have a ‘normal’ life,” explains Kevin. “I wasn’t sure what we could expect or what to do next.”  

It wasn’t long before the Grays got to work making sure the twins had exactly what they needed. Kevin le  his job and became a stay‐at‐home dad and the family started working with therapists through Child Development Services. A er about one year of  in‐home care and some remarkable progress, the Grays discussed preschool, and enrolled Mya and Asher in All Aboard!  Preschool, a program of Easter Seals Maine.   

A er just three months at All Aboard! Preschool the progress was indisputable. One day Kevin turned to April and said, “He’s  going to be okay.” As he remembers that day with a tear in his eye, Kevin says, “That was the best feeling I’d felt in years.”  

“Easter Seals has made all the difference in our family life,” shared April. “Now we can communicate with Asher and he can  communicate with us. Mya is no longer holding herself back and the gap between Mya and Asher is ge ng smaller each and  every day.”  

Asher and Mya turned four this year. When the Grays started this journey two years ago, their son wouldn’t even look them in the eyes, April didn’t hear “mommy” on a regular basis, and Mya couldn’t communicate that she wanted her mom, dad or older brothers to play with her. Today, April and Kevin are singing songs with their son, he’s ini a ng play, using a wide variety of words and having a decreasing number of meltdowns. Mya is able to dress herself, play with dolls, and hold a conversa on with her parents. April and Kevin could not have imagined these two being ready for school or even caring for themselves, but with the help of Early Interven on and the All Aboard! Preschool, they have hope that in the fall of 2013 Asher and Mya will start  kindergarten, alongside their peers.   

“It isn’t very o en that we see twins come through our doors and grow the way Mya and Asher have,” says Ada Guarino, Director of Services at Easter Seals Maine. “They are truly thriving and it has been amazing to watch.”  

April beams as she shares, “They have been such an incredible blessing and a constant reminder that we should take nothing for granted and be thankful for every milestone we reach.” 

Swimming Toward Independence — In April, the Easter Seals Maine Center for Therapeu c Recrea on accepted a $2,500 grant presented by the Bowdoin College's Common Good Grant Program. This student‐driven community support program gives Bowdoin College students the opportunity to learn about the mechanics of philanthropy by raising money and working together to solicit and evaluate grant proposals from local nonprofit organiza ons. This year, the Center for Therapeu c Recrea on was one of nine local organiza ons and agencies  recognized by the Common Good program. This grant was used to support the Center’s adapted aqua cs program for children and adults with disabili es. Easter Seals’ Therapeu c Recrea on program focuses on the purposeful use of play and recrea on to promote growth and independence for people with a variety of physical, emo onal, and cogni ve disabili es.   

Transi oning to New Heights — Preparing for life a er high school isn't an easy  me and it's even more challenging for teens with disabili es.  With that in mind, Easter Seals Maine launched the Youth Transi onal Services (YTS) program, a coordinated service for high school students with disabili es. This program provides individualized support to help prepare young adults for a smooth, produc ve transi on from school to further their educa on, employment, and  independent living.  A collabora ve effort of Easter Seals Maine’s Workforce Development  Services and Center for Therapeu c Recrea on, YTS combines the professional talents and staff experience of both programs to help facilitate a student’s progress from the structure of school to an independent young adulthood.  The program provides assistance with pre‐voca onal skills, employment and career services, and postsecondary educa on resources and informa on, but also helps students to explore their community, develop life skills, and stay connected within the social and recrea onal fabric of their communi es.   

A Quest to Raise Awareness and Have Fun, too  — It was a hot, late summer day, but that didn’t stop hundreds of people from scurrying through the streets of Portland to support Easter Seals Maine as they solved clues, completed challenges and worked hard to finish the city’s most exci ng scavenger hunt. Sponsors of the event included Northeast Delta Dental, Amica, 99.9 The Wolf, 107.5 Frank FM, Oxford Networks, the Portland Maine Conven on and Visitors Bureau, Maine Photo Booth, JetBlue, Fox 23, Cartridge World, Saco & Biddeford  Savings Ins tu on, Merrimack Mortgage Company, Road ID, Aetna, Brunswick Ford, EA Scribner and Mass Mutual. We were proud to not only raise just over $20,000, but to also spread the word about our programs and services throughout the Portland community as we promoted the event and as onlookers ques oned the par cipants throughout the city.
