Igneous Rocks

Igneous rocks are rocks that are formed either under ground or above ground

Under ground igneous rocks are forms when magma deep within the earth cool and form intrusive igneous rocks

Extrusive igneous rocks are formed when magma comes to the surface and becomes lave then cools and hardens to form extrusive igneous rocks

IGNEOUS ROCK-Rock formed by solidification of molten magma.

Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic rocks are types of rocks that change into a different rock.

These rocks are subjected to heat and pressure.

From the heat and pressure the rocks completely change underground.

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are rocks that are made up of pieces of earth that have eroded and deposited over thousands of years

The sediment form layers and then the bottom layers get pressed together and form sedimentary rocks

Rock CycleThe rock cycle is the formation, breakdown, and

reformation of rocks as a result of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic processes.

For rocks to change they go through weather and erosion, heat and pressure, deposition, and cooling and crystallization

WEATHERING-The basic chemical process that causes exposed rock to decompose.

EROSION-The process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, wind, ect.

DEPOSITION-The state of being deposited by water, air, or ice.

Fossils

Fossils are preserved remains or traces of plants, animals, and organisms from the remote past that have turned into stone

Fossils form in sedimentary rock because the plants, animals, and organisms get traped between the layers of sediment that form over thousands of years

Geological Time ScaleExtensive internal of time occupied by

the earth. This is a way to tell what happened to

the earth thousands of years ago.Rock, fossils, ect. Tell what happenedGEOLOGIC TIME SCALE-Standard method

to divide the earth’s long natural history into manageable parts.

Superposition

• A key axiom based on observations of natural history that is a foundational principle of sedimentary stratigraphy and so of other geology dependant natural sciences

LAW OF SUPERPOSITION-A basic law of geochronology, stating that the youngest laying of rock is on top.• http://en.wkikipedia.org/wiki/law
