To Begin...

Go to http://storybird.com/ and sign up for a free account.

Create a Regular account for personal use or select Teacher/Class for a school account.

A Teacher/Class account allows you to create writing assignments and collaborate with your students.

Students can also collaborate with each other on their stories.

Next... You should receive

an e-mail to confirm your registration.

Click the link and complete your registration.

Sign In with your e-mail and password.

Creating a Story

After signing in, click Create from the top menu.

You will see several pictures. Each picture is from a gallery that you can choose to use for your story.

You may choose a specific type of gallery from the lists in the left menu, or just browse until you find something inspiring.

Once you have chosen a picture, that picture’s gallery is displayed.

If it is something you would like to use for your story, click Use this Art – For a Story.

Now you are ready to begin creating your story!

Working with the gallery and story board... When the gallery

opens you will see the pictures included in the gallery, along with a story board.

To begin, click on the cover square at the bottom of the page in the story board.

Follow the on screen directions, to begin your story.

After adding your title, name, and cover art, you need to click on the blank page in your story board at the bottom of the page.

Next, choose a picture and begin typing your story.

Each time you want to add a picture to your story, click Add a Page.

Saving and Publishing your Story

Whenever you are going to exit the program, be sure to click Save in the upper right corner.

You can return to continue your story at any time.

When you are ready to publish your story, click on the down arrow next to Menu and choose Publish this Storybird...

After clicking to publish, the Story details page will display.

This page allows you to choose how you want your story published.

If this is a story for students, be sure to click This is for School and to publish this Privately.

Once you have completed the Story details, click Publish.

Sharing your Storybird

To share your story, click on the Share tool at the bottom of your story.

You can insert e-mail addresses, share the link provided, or use the embed code to place it on your web page.

Congratulations! You are a published author!

Using Storybird as a Teaching Tool

Storybird allows teachers to set up a class, add students, and create assignments.

To begin, you will need to create a class.

From your home page, choose create a class and complete the fields. Be sure to click Create your Class.

Begin by adding all your students to your class.

You will have to add them one at a time, unless you choose to upgrade to the paid subscription of Storybird.

Once your students are added, you will need to record their password to enable them to login to your class.

Adding an Assignment

Click on Assignments in top menu.

Then Create an assignment.

Fill in the Title, Description, and if you wish, a picture for your assignment.

Choose a Due Date.

Click Save Assignment.

When your students log in to Storybird using the login information you have provided them, they will need to click on the red notification symbol at the top of the page to find their assignment.

They then click on the blue writing to read their assignment.

After reading the assignment, they will click Start a Storybird.

They can then begin creating a Storybird!

Student Publishing Students will fill in a

Story details page.

Make sure they know to click on your Assignment before clicking Publish.

After they publish, you will be able to access their story from your class page.

Collaborating

It is easy to collaborate on a Storybird.

You may want to have students work in pairs, or groups to complete a story.

They will need to click on Menu and Invite.

Students complete the Invite collaborator page.

They will choose someone from the class to help with the story.

That student will see

the invitation message in their notifications on Storybird.

After clicking on the notification, the will need to Accept the invitation.

The shared story will then open for them to continue.

After adding to the story, they click Menu and Switch Turns to send it back to their partner.

Remind students to watch for notifications of shared stories and assignments.

When the partners have completed the story, one will publish the story for the teacher to review.
