(4) The next one is a very simple screen, plain and black with the word “presents on” in the font we chose, introducing the font which will be used throughout the sequence. This plain screen helps the audience to take in the frames which have just passed and drag out the tense moment until the audience see the first video shot of the opening sequence. This is when the diegetic comes in to form a sound bridge, this also prepares the audience for the video. (5) This shot is the first one of actual video footage which we filmed. It is a hand held panning shot of the trees from a low angled shot. This allows the audience to take in the full extent of the woods. We focused the camera so that the tree branches form silhouettes against the sky. This makes the overall image appear darker and therefore more eerie adding to the horror element of the movie. This non diegetic soundtrack placed alongside this emphasises this as it sounds scary and unnerving. Commonly the first shots of an opening sequence are establishing shots, our opening sequence follows this. However, normally the establishing takes the for, of a long shot or extreme shot of the setting. However we have used a medium long shot which does not show the entire setting and only a part of it. Using the editing software on SerifMoviePlus X6 I added more shadows to the video to make the lighting more low key and to emphasise how dark and eerie to opening sequence is going to be. As this is the first part of the opening sequence the audience will see we need to make it as eye catching as possible so that the audience will want to continue watching the opening sequence.

(1) This is one of our production logos this one is one I created usingSerifMoviePlus X6. This was based on the logo for MARVEL’s productioncompany which is a flicking comic book with text added over the top. Ihave created a post on how I did this logo.

(2) The next is another production company logo, this is from the ones wehad our target audience select. I created it on SerifDrawPlus X5. It willappear on the beat of the drum and then fade out.

(3) This is another production company logo which was selected by ourtarget audience using SerifDrawPlus X5. This also appeared on the beatof the drum and then faded out.

(4) The next one is a very simple screen, plain and black with the word“presents on” in the font we chose, introducing the font which will beused throughout the sequence. This plain screen helps the audience totake in the frames which have just passed and drag out the tensemoment until the audience see the first video shot of the openingsequence. This is when the diegetic comes in to form a sound bridge, this also prepares the audience for the video.

(5) This shot is the first one of actual video footage which we filmed. It is ahand held panning shot of the trees from a low angled shot. This allowsthe audience to take in the full extent of the woods. We focused thecamera so that the tree branches form silhouettes against the sky. Thismakes the overall image appear darker and therefore more eerie addingto the horror element of the movie. This non diegetic soundtrack placedalongside this emphasises this as it sounds scary and unnerving.Commonly the first shots of an opening sequence are establishing shots, our opening sequence follows this. However, normally the establishingtakes the for, of a long shot or extreme shot of the setting. However wehave used a medium long shot which does not show the entire settingand only a part of it. Using the editing software on SerifMoviePlus X6 Iadded more shadows to the video to make the lighting more low keyand to emphasise how dark and eerie to opening sequence is going tobe. As this is the first part of the opening sequence the audience will seewe need to make it as eye catching as possible so that the audience willwant to continue watching the opening sequence.

Page 2: Storyboard

(1) The next shot is a tilt down a tree. This is also done in a similar style to thefirst shot. It also forms silhouettes against the sky to make it look moreeerie. This is also done to show the setting off more.

(2) We have a final shot of the silhouettes of trees. This solidifies the setting, adding one final shot to show off where out opening sequence will betaking place.

(3) The next series of shots are introducing the character. We placed thecamera on a tripod and focused it on the leaves in the foreground. Thiscreated a good area to place the credits on. When we visited the placewhere we wished to film our opening sequence this framed area reallycaught our attention which is why we chose to use it within our sequence. The framing really highlights the character making her stand out from hersurroundings. We chose to include this as a character introduction shot is avery important part of the opening sequence, having her introduced on along shot helps to reveal the whole character from head to foot. Thereforewe can see her costume and all the contribution factors towards hercharacter.

(4) The next shot is a mid shot of her walking over a fallen branch. We chosenthis to help focus in on her red cape as it is a man part of both hercharacter and the plot line. It also shows the bright contrast of the capeagainst the dark coloured background. The focus on the feet also shows thesense of journey which is associated in fantasy films as they have a sense ofadventure. This shot also helps to express a sense of the charactersindividuality as she travels alone through the wood showing her innocenceas a character. We emphasised the colour contrasts using the editingsoftware on the programme to emphasise the contrast in colour, this alsomade the video darker overall to emphasise the genre of dark fantasy asthe videos appear darker using low key lighting. We also added title creditsover the top so that they appeared to be imprinted on the fallen log to tiethem into part of the setting, this also helps to add to the realism of thecredits to help them not take away from the overall setting.

(5) The next shot is a continuation of the 3rd shot. This expresses the repetitionof her journey through the forest and how long her walk is taking her.

Page 3: Storyboard

(1) This shot is a close up of the characters feet. This againemphasises the idea of journey which is a convention offantasy films. It also focuses on the conditions of the setting, from this shot the audience can automatically understandthat it is based around the colder, wetter months as theground is more muddy. This uses the idea of pathetic fallacy,as wet and cold represent horror and the foreboding thatsomething bad is going to happen.

(2) This is a continuation of the shot before, this emphasises thesense of journey more.

(3) The next shot shows a mid shot of the main characterwalking past a tree and brushing her hand across the tree. This was filmed using a hand held shot. We chose to use ahand held shot here to emphasise the element of realism. Many fantasy films have to become believable as they areabout the supernatural. Hand held shots are a great way toachieve this as it adds them idea that someone could befilming this and therefore makes it look more realistic.

(4) We chose to cut out the next scene which was purely a shotof some of the trees. We cut this out as we felt we werebeing to repetitive with out shots and this would becomeboring for the audience as the idea of repetition can becomedull and not exciting.

(5) We instead continued onto the next frame of the movie. Thistime we used a tripod to maintain the stillness of the cameraso that the filming does not appear messy or unprofessionaland therefore adds an element of precision to our work. Wefocuses the camera specifically on the red of Little Red RidingHood’s cloak as this is one of the main elements of the shotand making it stand out against the background is vital inemphasising her character.

Page 4: Storyboard

(1) This is a close up of the characters face. This helps to introduce thecharacter as we have not actually seen a close up of her face until thispoint. This shot helps to also introduce the actor who is playing thischaracter as we can both see her face and a title which is placed nextto the shot of the character’s face. This is something which appears ina lot of opening sequences as actor’s manager will pay extra for anactor’s name as it helps to promote the actor. The close up also showsthe character looking over her shoulder shows that something isfollowing her and she has notice, it also shows how on edge she is as acharacter. This emphasises her vulnerability as a character as she isnervous that she is being followed. After looking over her shouldershe runs away. We also slowed this down to make here look moreelegant while running adding to her delicacy as a character.

(2) The next frame is an overlap over the previous image through anextended fade between the two shots. This again adds to the delicacyof the character. This also emphasises the bright red of the characterscape and adds to the sense of her long journey through the wood toreach her destination. Fades are very rare within movies as they donot add continuity to movies however in opening sequences they arecommonly used as it adds a more arty abstract nature to thesequence.

(3) The next shot is a close up of some cleaves which travels upwards theshow more of the setting. This has been used as a break from theaction to explore the setting more. The camera is hand held to showthe possible presence of someone hiding behind the leaves watchingthe setting for Little Red Riding Hood. It also helps the audience tonoticeably pick out all of the smaller details of the setting adding tothe realism of it.

(4) This shot shows a mid shot of the character running past a tree andbrushing her hand across it as she looses her balance and thencontinues to run. It has again been set into slow motion to emphasisethat she is elegant adding to the idea that she is an innocentcharacter, this innocence is also expressed through the white colourin her dress which connotes innocence. We placed the credits in thecorner so that they were noticeable but did not detract from theoverall image.

(5) This next shot is a close up of her hand brushing over the tree, it alsobrings the audiences attention that there are claw marks in the tree, thisconnotes danger and the disruption of the setting acting asforeshadowing that something bad had happened within this setting. Thishas been set in slow motion again to help the audience to make sure theysee the claw marks on the tree. Her hand brushing over there'semphasises that something is going to happen to her which is associatedwith the claw marks, emphasising that she has no idea what could happenat any moment.

Page 5: Storyboard

(1)This shot is just the continuation of the shotbefore the close up. This just shows herleaving the frame, still running this creates asmooth transition into the next frame. It alsoemphasises how scared she is as she is stillrunning, emphasising her vulnerability as acharacter.

(2)The next shot is just a close up we inserted ofa low angled shot looking up at a leaf on thetree. This again creates a break from theaction on the opening sequence helping toemphasise the setting, it also helps thereality of the setting as it shows howeverything is exactly how you would find it ina real forest.

These two shots were not part of our original storyboard but we added them in afterwards and therefore added in images and information on the two shots.

Page 6: Storyboard

(1) This shots shows again a small attention to detail within the setting. It showsa shot of some berries hanging from a branch. The connotation of berries isthat they are dangerous as many berries within the wild are poisonous . Thiscreates a sense of foreboding as the character nears this shot and byextension is nearing something bad. The shot is also accompanied withsome credits, we tried to make sure the credits did not conflict with thevideo in this shot and therefore placed them the opposite side to the berriesto make sure they did not detract from the image of the berries. The wind isslowing the berries around quite a bit and so emphasises that the characteris traveling through bad weather conditions which furthers her vulnerabilityas a character.

(2) The next shot was aimed to shock the audience. It contains a row of cupcakes. They contrast against the eerie background, it represents thecharacters innocence and childish nature. It is also part of the original storythat Little Red Riding Hood was taking cakes and wine to visit her grandma. The cupcakes also give a sense of the plot as this may give the audiencesome kind of understanding about where the character is going. Wepresented it through a pan close up to reveal the line of cupcakes to theaudience.

(3) This shot is also a close up of the cupcakes although this is a still shot. In thebackground we see the character walking past the row of cupcakes. She isnow walking and therefore does not seem as worried as before, this linksinto the visual of the cupcakes as they represent innocence instead ofhaving a darker meaning. Two sets of credits appear within this shot, appearing over the cupcakes , this makes them look like they are part of thesequence and they actually blend in to the scene instead of just looking likesomething out of place within the scene.

(4) The next shot is a close up of a tree with the main character coming frombehind the free to rest against it as she has been walking and running for along time and so appears our of breath. We moved the camera slightly tomake the audience still know there is an element of tension even thoughshe has stopped running.

(5) This is paired by a mid shot of the same element, the character resting on atree but still looking edgy as if she is still frightened of whatever she sawbefore. This makes the audience want to know what she saw and thereforewill want to continue watching. This shot was handheld to add the elementof edginess to the shot. The audience really get a sense of what thecharacter is feeling as they can see close up in her face what she is feeling. This emphasises the characters vulnerability in this situation.

Page 7: Storyboard

(1) The next shot is a hand held point of view shot. We had no specificmovement for this shot as we wanted it to look as realistic that it was acharacter sneaking up on Little Red Riding Hood. We see the glimpses ofthe red cloak through the tree which connotes that Little Red Riding Hoodis in danger as red is used to represent danger. The character sneaking upon Little Red Riding Hood instantly connotes an “evil” character as theyare sneaking up behind her to possibly try to harm her. This makes theaudience tense as they have no idea what is going to happen to thischaracter. This is emphasised also as the soundtrack becomes much moretense.

(2) The next shot is an extreme close up of the character’s eyes. Extremeclose ups are usually used to show a characters emotion and here doesnot break this rule. The character looks frightened as she looks over hershoulder towards the source of the noise. Her eyes widen and theaudience will feel instantly worried and on edge for her character as theyhave no idea what is going to happen to her. We enhanced the shadowson this shot to show the difference between the darker and lighter partsof her face.

(3) The next shot is an over the shoulder close up of her looking behind herat whatever was sneaking up on her and obviously made some kind ofnoise. This also has a credit on it, we were really worried this credit woulddetract from the overall sequence but the audience said it looked fine andthe title still seemed to fit into the opening sequence. The camera is againshaky to show the build of tension on this scene.

(4) The next shot is another hand held point of view shot although this takesthe form of Little Red Riding Hood’s view point. She is breathing heavilyas we can see through the up and down movement of the camera as shelooks at the trees. This can either emphasise her fear or that she has beenrunning for a while emphasising the idea that she is in a lot of danger as acharacter. The colourisation is also very dark and we cannot see thecharacter who was sneaking up on her adding to the element of mystery.

(5) The next shot opens a new sequence of the action. It is a close up of a logwith the character in a mid shot running towards the camera and thenfalling over. We slowed this down so that they audience can see her falland her hand hit the log to stop herself from completely falling. We setthe camera on a low down tripod to prevent it from getting muddy.

Page 8: Storyboard

(1) The next shot is again another over the shoulder point of view to show what thecharacter is looking at. She is standing up revealing blood on her hand off of thebranch. Blood has strong connotations of danger and foreboding as if somethingbad has happened here adding to the audience’s fear towards the character. Thecamera slowly focuses on her hand covered in blood, this is meant to representher realisation about what is on her hand. The slow fade makes it more dramaticas we can see that she is shocked about what it is. This is also emphasisedthrough the fact it is a point of view shot as the audience may be able to imaginethey are in the characters position adding to the elements of fear.

(2) The next shot is a close up of a smashed wine bottle covered in red liquid. Thisliquid is wine but is supposed to remind the audience of blood thus adding to theelement of horror within the opening sequence. This is from the original story asLittle Red Ridding Hood was taking wine to visit her grandma. This contrasts withthe images of cakes as the bottle will be smashed and covered in the red winewhich will look strangely like blood reflecting the violent nature of the movie. Thebottle could have also been used as a weapon to hurt someone and thus adds tothe element of mystery and that something bad has happened and somethingeven worse is going to happen. I have also edited the credits over the top whichdo not detract from the shot as they are not place over the glass bottle butinstead next to it.

(3) The next shot is of another group of smashed glass similar to that before it.

(4) This shot is of a cupcake, instead of the clean cupcakes of before this one hasdropped in the mud and therefore expresses the changing tone of the openingsequence, we are no longer reflecting on the innocence if the scene but thedestruction of innocence. This also brings forth foreboding that something bad isgoing to happen to the character.

(5) This shot is very picturesque, contrasting with the shots before hand. Theycontain the credits of vital people in the making of the movie. The sun in thebackground connotes that we are nearing the end of the opening sequence andthat we many soon be enlightened with the knowledge of who is chasing themain character. This builds tension in the audience as by this point they will reallywant to know what is chasing her. Many of the audience who we got to watchout opening sequence said that by this point they were on the “edge of theirseat”waiting for a climaxing point of the sequence.

Page 9: Storyboard

(1) Here we have a really long edit of a hand held shot of a point of viewshot of someone chasing the main character through the woods toan opening in the woods. This is very tense as we can see thedesperation of Little Red Riding Hood as she runs away fromwhoever is chasing her, this will really put the audience on edge asthey fear for her character as she is chased through the woods. However, there is a sense of release as she runs into the light as lightconnotes hope and security as if she is now safe as she enters thefield as she is no longer in the dark scary woods. We can also seeglimpses of her red cloak which connote that she is still in danger asshe runs as red connotes danger.

(2) This shot is a long mid shot showing her running into the field. Thisshows that it is now around sunset. The bright coloured grasscontrasts with the dark greens of the woods before showing she isnow secure and safe. This allows the audience to relax slightly butthey still anticipate the presence of another character.

(3) The next shot is a low angled shot. This is to contrast with the ideathat our character is venerable as low angled shots are used to showcharacters who have power. The idea of this is to show that ourcharacter has some kind of power and confidence now she is nolonger in the woods. These are all very fast paced edits to show thelast flourish of the opening sequence to build the tension to capturethe audiences attention for the title which will lead onto the film.

(4) The next shot is a silhouette of the characters head against thesunset. This causes a beautifully framed shot. This helps bring forththe Directors name who is possibly one of the most importantpeople within the sequence. She is looking over as if she iswondering where she needs to go next which makes the audiencewant to continue watching so they can find out where she is going togo.

(5) We are then shown the final shot of the opening sequence which isan extreme close up of the character looking across the field, preparing to continue with her journey and therefore continue theopening sequence into the movie. The title of the film fades in whichtells the audience that the actual movie is going to begin.
