What are trailers for?• Trailers are to market the film; they give the audience a insight to the film but only a very small fraction. However that small fraction must not give

too much away but give enough away in order for the audience to want to go and see the film. In a shorter version a trailer must be effective in order to make the target audience interested in the film.

How is your trailer making meaning for the audience?• The star wars force awakens trailer is making a meaning due to the diegetic sounds chosen. For example the line ‘I have nothing to fight for’ Is said

in a voice which is about to crumble, whilst as man is taking of his mask and is sweating (suggesting running away). Straight away empathy is created and this is done several times therefore the audience want to see more and understand the characters. The trailer is also very fast paced towards the ends making the audience become thrilled and shocked as so many things are happening.

• Basically the trailer creates emotion which entices the audience as it proves that if the trailer can make me feel this way then the film must be amazing.

What are the representational issues in your trailer?• The representation of men and women in this trailer is actually very equal. Old films typically had the man as the hero and the most powerful but this

time there is a women playing a obviously very strong character. The robots are mostly presented as evil and to be causing the war whereas the rebellion seem to be portrayed as the victim.

How is the audience meant to react? uses and gratifications?• I think the audience are meant to be entertained, the film seems to be something to watch for pleasure rather than serious information. The

audience are also supposed to interact- the more interaction the more the film is promoted. Due to the trailer being so ‘on the go’ and many different things happening the audience will become excited and will want to see the film. A buzz will be created especially as star wars has fandoms.

What is the unique selling point?• Personally in star wars I don’t think there is just one unique selling point. The fact that star wars is a brand, a ‘way of life’ for the fandoms, there are

many factors which make it different. However I think the part in the trailer which sells the film is that the effects shown are just effortless. The trailer flows so well; there are a mixture of fades, jump cuts, quick shots ect.. and they all work so well. There are also fake explosions and space crafts flying which just look so realistic. This leaves people in awe and forget that actually the majority of it was filmed on a green screen. As the film feels so real the audience can relate more.

What are the generic features? iconography?• Science fiction is truly shown in star wars due to: Blue lighting which suggests futuristic lifestyles, Light saber’s are the traditional star wars

weapon;these don't exist in real wars, There are so many robots in the film which are obviously very futuristic characters and the film is set in a dystopian future.

What part of the narrative are revealed? Why?• In the trailer it becomes obvious that there is going to be a war between the rebellion and the empire, it is also given away that the empire are very

powerful and have a good chance of success. The narrative also seems to involve revenge ‘Finish what you've started’.

Is it an effective trailer?  Why?• It is effective because the narrative is not revealed however it still manages to make you want to watch the film and have a good idea about the

characters. The trailer also goes from slow pace to quite quick which makes it effective as it builds tension just by speed. It is also effective as it uses a mixture of sounds- both diegetic and non diegetic. The non diegetic sounds chosen really suit the film which is good because it means diegetic sounds don't have to be used to create empathy.
