District 12 Shooting Sports Postal
League Contest
The Postal League is designed to provide additional shooting sports opportunities for 4-H members across District 12. The event
includes Smallbore Rifle, Shotgun, and Archery. The term “Postal” simply refers to this event taking place locally within your
area. Depending on the number of disciplines the 4-H’er enters will determine the fee. The base registration fee is $5.00 and each event
will be $10. Registration for these events will be administered through 4-H Connect. Select
the “D12 4-H Shooting Sports Postal League” event. The registration period will begin
February 1, 2020 and conclude on February 20, 2020. Participants of these 4-H events should
coordinate with their respective coach or county office to register. Anyone looking to
participate in this contest must complete a safety orientation prior to competition.

DON’T FORGET TO ENROLL ON 4-H CONNECT
Enrollment for the 2019—2020 4-H Year is now open on 4-H Connect. Anyone that wishes to show an animal under Atascosa County 4-H or participate in a contest must be registered. Youth Member Participation Fees are $25 now through October 31st. On November 1st the cost to register will increase to $30 through the end of the year. Any adult volunteers must also register on 4-H Connect and complete the Volunteer Screening Process. Cost for adult volunteers is $10 this covers the screening for the year. Safer Path Family Violence Shelter is looking for the following items this month:

Any donations can be taken to the Begin Again Thrift Store in Pleasanton.
Congratulations to our County Council President Nathan Ricks who signed with Shiner Univer-
sity in Kerrville, TX. Nathan will be going the Shriner University Shooting team. One the day of
signing Nathan was able to participate in a collegiate shoot. Nathan will be receiving a
$21,000 scholarship to attend the University and be a member of the Shotgun Team.

Upcoming Contests To Participate In
If you have questions in regards to Dog Show or Project the Dog Project will meet the 1st Thursday of each month at
6:30 PM in the Atascosa County Extension Office Auditorium.
Storyboard The 4-H Storyboard is an industry-inspired method of displaying original designs. The best storyboards create vivid visual images that are inspiring and appealing to viewers. The storyboard “tells the story” of the designers idea. It includes origi-
nal illustrations and flats, as well as additional materials such as photos from the internet, fabric swatches, and more that have inspired the unique design. The 2020 Storyboard theme is “Game Night.” Any 4-H Member can compete in that County Storyboard Contest. Storyboards are due on March 17, 2020 by 5 PM for the County Contest. The first place
winner in each Division and Category has the opportunity to have their Storyboard advance to the District 12 Contest, and Seniors have the possibly of advancing to the State Roundup Contest.
Divisions: Junior—Grades 3-5; Intermediate—Grades 6-8; Senior—Grades 9-12
Categories: Wearable—Clothing that can be worn.
Accessory—Includes such items such as belts, purses, bags, hats, etc.
Jewelry—Necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings. etc.
Pet Clothing—Items that can be worn by a pet or any other animal.
Home Décor—Items that are easy to move and make a home visually appealing such as throw pillows, table runner, or wall hangings.
Home Furnishings—Items that make a home comfortable for living or working in such as a couch, ottoman, chair, tables, desks, and beds.
If you would like more information on Storyboard we will be holding a Storyboard Workshop on February 28, 2020 at 5:30 PM, dinner will be served at the Workshop. If you want to attend please

You will construct or purchase a clothing or fashion item, turn in paperwork explaining your item, complete an interview with a panel of judges. Any 4-H Member in grades 3-12 can compete in the
Atascosa County Fashion Show. The first place winner in each Division Category has the chance to participate at the District 12 Fashion Show, and Senior Division 4-H Members have the opportunity to
possibly advance to the State 4-H Roundup Contest. The Atascosa County Fashion Show will be on Friday March 6, 2020 at 6 PM at the Atascosa County Extension Office. The District 12 Fashion Show
at this time is scheduled for April 4, 2020 with more details to come out at a later time.
If you want to participate in the Atascosa County Fashion Show Paperwork is due to the Extension Office by 5 PM February 28, 2020.

Construction
Garments may be constructed by sewing, knitting, or
crocheting.
Categories you can construct a garment for are:
Everyday Living— Includes casual, sportswear weekend-wear, sleepwear, clothing for school, casual afterschool
events, or hanging our with friends.
ReFashion—The result of modifying existing clothing or fabric items (such as table cloth or curtain) into something more fashionable. The main purpose of ReFashion is creativity, as well as sewing skills. The Member designs and sews a wearable garment from previously used
garments or fabric items.
Semi-Formal to Formal—Entry must be designed for semi-formal to formal occasions and made from fabrics intended
for the same.
Theatre/Costume—Garment intended for use as a costume. These garments may be unusual or innovative
materials; imaginative but wearable.

Buying
You put together an outfit that you purchase which exhibits
quality of workmanship and at a great price.
Categories you can purchase a garment for are:
Business/Interview Attire—Entry should be an outfit you would wear for a job interview, scholarship interview, job
fair, or other professional event.
Fantastic Fashions under $25—Outfits must be purchased
at a garage sale, consignment store, Goodwill, Salvation
Army, or other retail business. Receipts are required for
everything that is visible during the interview, except
shoes. Do not need to account for sales tax.
Semi—Formal to Formal—Entry must be designed for
semi-formal to formal occasions and made from fabrics
intended for the same.
Special Interest—Entry should be a specific outfit that you
need to know how to purchase wisely, and should be
something that reflects a special interest of the participant.
Examples are but not limited to: equestrian and riding ap-
parel, dance costumes, hiking clothing, or rock climbing
clothing.

County Roundup
The 4-H Talent Show
If you like to sing, dance, act out a play, read a poem, or
play instrument this is a 4-H Contest for you. You can
also grab a friend and perfect your public speaking
skills while you make a presentation on an educational
topic, or do it alone.
Roundup is a contest where you can choose to participate in multiple different areas:
Share-the-Fun, which is the 4-H equivalent to a talent show. In Share-the-Fun you can pre-
form alone, with a friend, or a group of friends. You can preform in a group or with a friend
a Choreographed Routine, play musical instruments, skit, or as a band. If you like to per-
form alone you can read a poem or prose, have a solo performance, or sing a song in the vocal
contest.
Public Speaking, you write a speech on a topic you are familiar with and deliver the speech
to an audience. Once the speech is complete the audience will ask questions to better under-
stand your topic.
Educational Presentation, You make a speech on a topic and make presentation aids and
props to help educate an audience on your topic. You can make the presentation with a
friend or on your own. There is a list of topics to choose from to make the presentation on
that will be released soon. Last year of few of the topics were: Agricultural Technology &
Farm Safety, Animal Science, Beef, Health & Wellness, Horse, Open, Open—Agricultural &
Natural Resources, Open—Family & Community Health, and Safety and Injury Prevention.
Ag Product ID Contest, can you identify ag products that are grown in Texas, can you identi-
fy benefits of each of these products? If you this is a contest for you. If you would like to

Atascosa County Photography Contest
Photos must be taken by participants between dates of January 1, 2019 and the time of entry.
Photo Format: Must be .jpeg, .jpg, or .png
Each 4-H Member may enter one photo per category.
Email Photos for the contest to [email protected] by February 21, 2020, 5PM.
Photos cannot be larger than 5120 KB (5MB)
Only slight computer enhanced photos are allowed. Examples are crop, trimming, adjusting lighting, and red eye reduction. Any altered photography, such as changing colors or applying design styles using computer graphics
will disqualify an entry. Any other alteration, manipulation, edits, to a photo would require the photo to be entered into the Enhanced category.
Photographs must not contain camera or user placed text. This includes such things as date stamps, comments, or titles. Text or wording as part of the photograph such as a street sign is acceptable.
Each entry must be the photographic work of the 4-H Member.
We will award places to all photos in each category. The first place winner in each age division and category is eligible for the District 12 Photography Contest. Any Senior that gets a first place in a category is eligible to sub-
mit their photos in the Texas 4-H Photography Contest.

Rules for the District 12 Photography Contest will be released at a later date.

Categories:
Photography Contest
Animals—Domestic— Animals that have been tamed and made fit for a human environment. Ex: Cat, Chick-en, Cows, Hamster, Horse, Etc.
Animals—Wildlife—Animals that have not been tamed. Ex: Deer, Birds, Elephants, Snakes, Etc.
Catch—All—Photos that do not fit into one of the other categories. Ex: Long exposure zoomed images, paint-ing with light, polaroid image, still—life, Etc.
Detailed & Macro—Macro, close up photos.
Dominant Color—The dominant element in the image must be a specific color, such as red. Ex: bowl of lem-ons in a yellow bowl on top of a yellow table cloth. Black and White Photographs not allowed in this cate-gory.
Elements of Design— Photos that showcase line, shape, pattern, form, texture, perspective, etc..
Enhanced—A single photo that has been technically manipulated to be an abstract, panoramic, stitched or composite image.
Food—Still life specialization of photography, aimed at producing attractive photographs of food for use in such items of advertisements, packaging, menus and or/
cookbooks. Photos of alcohol beverages are not al-lowed.
Landscape & Nature (Non—Animal)—Landscapes, outdoor scenic, sunsets, urban landscapes, seascapes.
Motion/Action—Capture of movement within a photo.
Night—Photos that capture objects in or against the night sky. This can include objects such as buildings, landscape features, people, light trails. Sunset and sun-rise photos not allowed.
People—babies, families, kids, portraits, etc.
Plant/Flora—Photos of single flower, plant bush, tree, etc. Ex: rose, upward shot of a tree, etc.
Shadow/Silhouette—outline that appears dark with lit-tle or no details/ features against a brighter background. Reflections are not allowed.
Theme—The Elements—must contain one of the 4 ele-ments: earth, air, water, or fire. Photos can include a combination of one or more elements, but the element(s) itself must be the focal point. Ex: dust devil, steam, snow, campfire, water droplets, clouds, etc.

In order to participate in any 4-H sponsored event including stock shows, shooting sports, or other contests, members must be enrolled with one of our area clubs and meet the 50% attend-ance requirement prior to the contest. Partici-pation in any competition or shooting event is
only permitted while meeting eligibility criteria under Texas Education Code 33.081 “No Pass
No Play.”

Atascosa County Livestock Show Buyers Lists and photos are ready for pick up at the Atascosa County Extension Office.
You must pick up buyers list and photos in office, we cannot mail or email them. You must send each buyer a thank you letter and include a photo to
your top buyers. Once you have written your thank you letters you must pro-vide the Extension Office with a copy your thank you letters before you can
receive a check.

NEVER FORGET: Donors have a choice!
Tip 1: Recap Who you are and What You are Thank-
ing Them For. (Paragraph 1: My Name is ______,
and I am a member of the ______ 4-H Club. I have
been involved in the organization since_____. I partic-
ipate in____(list projects, contest, etc.) I really enjoy 4-
H because I have learned ____. Paragraph 2: I want
to take this opportunity to thank you for _____. (BE
SPECIFIC) Then, how did that help YOU? (The mon-
ey from the sale of my pig will go into my college
fund. I am planning to attend_______and
study________.
Tip 2: Finish Strong (I know that you support many
organizations/causes/students, but I want to thank
you again for choosing to buy my pig. Your generous
gift is greatly appreciated.)
Tip 3: Stand out with extra effort. Should you do a
handwritten or a typed thank you?
Advantages of a Handwritten Letter—It shows that you
were willing to invest your time. You get to select the ap-
propriate card or stationary which looks like you put
some thought into the process.
Disadvantage of a Handwritten Letter—If you handwrit-
ing is barely legible, your message might get lost in trans-
lation. Mark outs, and inkblots do not look very profes-
sional even if your message is heart-felt.
Advantages of Typed Letter—you can create your own
letterhead and stationary to reflect your personal style.
You have spell check, grammar check and can re-write
until your message is just what you want.
Disadvantages of a Typed Letter—It can look like a form
letter if you are not careful to make it personal and specif-
ic. Small percentage of people will be offended that you
didn’t take the time to WRITE a letter.
***Note: If you choose to type your letter, be sure to actu-
ally sign it yourself. In addition, I would address the en-
velope by hand.
Tip 4: Timing is Important. Thank you letters should
be done ASAP after the event. The longer you wait
the less emotional connection you will have to the
event, the person, and the gift.

This course is directed towards youth and collegiate horse judging team member, their coaches, and anyone interested in learning more
about horse judging. The learning objectives of this course include understanding the rules for each class, applying the judging guide-
lines to each class by judging video classes, and learning to articulate placings during oral reasons.

Scholarships
Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences Scholarships—Undergraduate Degrees in Plant and Environ-mental Soil Science and Turfgrass Science. Freshmen are eligible for up to $4000 per year of departmental scholarships for 4 years and Transfers are eligible for up to $4000 per year of departmental scholarships for 2 years. 4-H Opportunity Scholarship—The 2020 Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship Program opened Friday, November 1st. The Texas 4-H Foundation implemented a new platform that will host the application submission process as well as manage scholars through the life cycle of their scholarship. Applicants will no longer submit their application through 4-H CONNECT or by paper/mail. There have been no changes to the criteria required of the applicant, only the way the applicant applies. Please review these attachments mentioned below so that you are aware of these changes.
Here is the 2020 scholarship timeline:
Application Deadline: February 14th
Interview Notifications (Tentative): April 3rd
Interviews: April 24th – 26th
Award Notifications (Tentative): May 4th
Texas 4-H Roundup: June 8th – 11th
Applicants must have their application reviewed by their CEA and have their CEA complete the CEA Verification Form. The applicant will need to upload this form with their application. The form is available to print from the Foundation website under the “Apply” button on the Scholarship page or from within their application.
