Page 4B — Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 — Curry Coastal Pilot Long story short: One- Armed Brian’s headed home late at night, four coyotes corner him — snapping and snarl- ing — he’s swinging his backpack to keep them away. They’re coming closer. Closer. Snarling. And a car comes by and rescues him. “No big deal,” he said later, with a shrug. “I’m fine.” Yeah. That man’s got some bark. I digress. Back in Lone Tree, Cody said he was on the hillside, with no escape route in the brambles, and this coyote appears and starts snapping and growling at him. He didn’t know it, but he was near a known coyote den, and this mama had recently had coyote-ettes. I would have tried to negotiate! Maybe thrown up a white flag. Rolled on my back to show my non-alpha coyote status. But no! This brave little 13-year-old boy pulled out his knife — a knife! — and slashed the coyote’s neck. And Cody, being of tough Colorado stock, strolled home and over dinner, casually mentioned his little adventure to his mom. “Good job,” Mom said. “Have you cleaned out the rain gutters like I asked?” Well, word travels fast in small towns, and soon the Lone Cop of Lone Tree wanted in on the action. Someone had found the body of the coyote, and the cop wanted to talk to Cody the Coyote Killer. He was probably thinking rabies! Ter- rorism! Juicy gossip! That’s all exciting stuff for the Lone Cop in Lone Tree. In the end, he scolded mom. Told her the coy- ote was only trying to protect her pups. “Just doing what she had to do.” “Indeed, she was,” Cody the Coyote Killer’s mom responded. “And Cody was just doing what he had to do.” Zing! Long story short: One-Armed Brian’s headed home late at night, four coyotes corner him — snapping and snarl-ing — he’s swinging his backpack to keep them away. They’re coming closer. Closer. Snarling. And a car comes by and rescues him.

“No big deal,” he said later, with a shrug. “I’m fine.”

Yeah. That man’s got some bark.

I digress.Back in Lone Tree,

Cody said he was on the hillside, with no escape route in the brambles, and this coyote appears and starts snapping and growling at him. He didn’t know it, but he was near a known

coyote den, and this mama had recently had coyote-ettes.

“Have you cleaned out the rain gutters like I asked?”

Well, word travels fast in small towns, and soon the Lone Cop of Lone Tree wanted in on the action.

Someone had found the body of the coyote, and the cop wanted to talk to Cody the Coyote Killer. He was probably thinking rabies! Ter-rorism! Juicy gossip! That’s all exciting stuff for the Lone Cop in Lone Tree.

In the end, he scolded mom. Told her the coy-ote was only trying to protect her pups. “Just doing what she had to do.”

“Indeed, she was,” Cody the Coyote Killer’s mom responded. “And Cody was just doing what he had to do.”

Zing!I’m surprised Cody’s

mom didn’t get a ticket for sassing the Lone Cop.

But Cody. The Coyote Killer. Now, that kid’s got bark.
