Holy Cross’s lead was extended in the 14th minute when Courtney McGarrigle scored from three yards out after a scramble in the goal mouth. The second half started with a bang, as Holy Cross’s Northern Ireland International Lauren Brennan scored on the counter attack, to put the game effectively out of Thornhill’s reach. Any attempts of a Thornhill comeback were kept at bay by Alana McShane and the rest of the Holy Cross Defence. Chelsea Sherrin wrapped up the scoring for Holy Cross in the final minute to round off a 4-0 victory, much to the delight of the large Holy Cross support in the stands. Holy Cross coach Gerald Boyle paid tribute to his great group of players. He was delighted that the girls got a victory on the day as a lot of the squad will be leaving the school this year. “This was a brilliant achievement from what I believe to be the greatest group of girls we’ve had together at one time. That is now two Northern Ireland Cups they’ve claimed. They lost in the final last year and to be honest they were really hurting from that defeat. They were not going to let that happen again and they were really determined to bring the Cup back home to Strabane. I couldn’t be more delighted for them,” enthused Gerald. Irish FA Women’s Football Assistant, Jackie Blythe was hugely impressed by the game and the turnout. “The final was a fantastic advert for schoolgirl’s football in Northern Ireland. It was great to see so many supporters here and thanks must also go to Vauxhall who have sponsored this competition yet again,” she stated. A jubilant Holy Cross College team brought the Vauxhall Senior School- girl’s Cup back to Strabane on Thursday afternoon following a compre- hensive 4-0 victory over Thornhill College in the Final at Moyola Park. The Holy Cross girls celebrate winning the Northern Ireland Cup for the second time.

History will be made next week when for the fi rst time in over half a century a passen-ger train will run through the night in Donegal.

It’s all part of a 24 hour marathon fund raiser in aid of the Irish Cancer Soci-ety. The novel event, on the 4th and 5th of May, is happening at Oakfi eld Park in Raphoe, the home of Sir Gerry and Lady Heather Robinson. It’s all part of the national Relay for Life Cancer Fun-draising Weekend.

And for local or even multinational com-panies prepared to sponsor the train rides there’s an added bonus. Every €50 (Stg£44) donated to the marathon train ride buys a ticket for a draw., the prize, a One-to-one advise session with one of the U.K. and Ireland’s most successful businessmen. Sir Gerry is offering a half day of one to one advice to three successful sponsors and the more tickets bought the more chances of winning.

It’s a unique opportunity for local com-panies and anyone with an incubat-ing business idea to benefi t from the

knowledge of the business guru who has headed up some of the most suc-cessful companies in the U.K. The former Chief Executive of Granada and BskyB and BBC Presenter of “I’ll Show Them who’s Boss” will be invaluable to whoever wins the personal advice ses-sion.

Sir Gerry is keen for as many compa-nies as possible to become involved in the charity event. “It’s all for a good cause, we wanted to help cancer research and thought this was a fun way to do it. The gardens will be open for families to come along and enjoy on the 4th and 5th of May. But of course we really need sponsorship from com-panies to make it all worthwhile.

I know many small companies could do with a fresh eye on their operations but to be truthful so could many of the established companies nowadays with the markets in a state of uncertainty as well. So why not help a charity and yourself at the same time. If you’re not in you can’t win.”

During the weekend of the 4th and 5th of May trains will run between 6pm on Saturday to 6pm on Sunday. Pas-sengers will be carried along the 4km

narrow gauge railway line that runs through the lush gardens and open lakes.

Oakfi eld Railway Station has already made history when it became the fi rst railway station in the Irish Republic to be granted a new refreshment license by the Irish courts. Refreshments will be served at the station during the weekend with a treat in store on the Mid Night Express. There will be lots of fun and games for families during the day also.

There’s even an opportunity for some-one to win a driving lesson with a dif-ference, learn to drive the Duchess of Diffl in steam train around Oakfi eld Park. So spread the news, a great treat is in store but remember its all part of the national drive to raise much needed funds for cancer research.

For more information check out the Oakfi eld Park website, Facebook page or contact gardens@oakfi eldpark.com. Sponsor cheques made payable to the ‘Irish Cancer Society’ can be posted to ‘Claire’s Bluebells’, Oakfi eld Park, Raphoe, Co. Donegal. Include contact details for the sponsors business.

The Lifford Players are set to stage their latest production, a presen-tation of “Happy Birthday Dear Alice” by Bernard Farrell, at the Alley Theatre in Strabane, followed by two nights in the Regional Cul-tural Centre in Letterkenny.

A touching and at times hilarious look at aging, the play centers on ‘Alice’ as she celebrates her 70th birthday. In fl ashbacks, she recalls former birth-days as her children try to convince her it’s time to enter a retirement residence. Alice has other ideas in which her dead husband’s partner Jimmy has a major role. A raging bull and faulty hearing aids also fi gure prominently in the plot.

The cast for the production, which takes place in the Alley on Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8 and in the Regional Cultural Centre on Monday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 21, includes Ann Shiels as ‘Alice’, Leo McBride as ‘Jimmy’, Michelle McCrory as ‘Barbara’, Michael Kelly as ‘Barry’, Arthur McGarrigle as ‘Cormac’ and DeeDee Diver as ‘Sandy’.

It will mark a welcome return to the local stage for the Lifford Players, presently celebrating 61 years of entertaining drama audiences up and down the country. Founded in 1952 by offi cials from Don-egal County Council and Lifford Post Offi ce, their fi rst production was “The Fort Field” by George Shiels and little did they think then that the group would still be fl ourishing 61 years later.

The group is hoping to raise funds in order to take their production out on the festival circuit in 2014.

Speaking to the ‘Herald’ during rehearsals last week, Michelle McCrory also insisted that anyone who feels they can be of assistance in any way to Lifford Players should get in contact with them.

“If anyone is interested in getting involved with us behind the scenes, helping move sets, etc, then please do get in touch. I should add, however, that the hours can be long and unsociable but it is a fun and worthwhile hobby for someone looking for something new,” said Michelle. Lifford Play-ers can be contacted via their new Facebook page

(https://www.facebook.com/TheLiffordPlayers). “Happy Birthday Dear Alice” will be performed in The Alley, Strabane - Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 May and RCC, Letterkenny - Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 May.

Since their fi rst Festival in 1956 Lifford Players have achieved the following successes:

What a line up of events the Alley Theatre has in store this May. Over the next four weeks the best enter-tainment will be coming to Stra-bane.

Live Music This May...

Anthony Toner

We are delighted to be welcoming back Belfast-based singer songwriter on Friday 3rd May in the Alley Café Bar as part of a Northern Ireland tour to support his brand new album ‘Things Fall Apart’.

The collection, his fi fth, has attracted strong air-play and response and follows a string of radio suc-cesses - his composition ‘Sailortown’ has become one of Northern Ireland radio’s most requested songs.

Anthony Toner is always a popular and accom-plished live performer; Anthony’s shows include superb guitar playing plus background information on the inspiration behind the material, and some entertaining stories from the road.

Juliet Turner

Enjoy the soothe calming vocals of Juliet Turner as she comes home to County Tyrone with her new live show. Juliet’s live shows should be experi-enced. She is a quiet, relaxed performer with a wicked sense of humour. Her voice is unusually clear and sweet and her between song anecdotes are amusing, eccen-tric and off the- cuff. To date Turner has released 5 albums, a live album, double platinum sales and a Meteor Music Award and now Juliet has released her single “The House at the Top of the Hill” from her new album due out this year. To see Juliet Turner perform is a pure joy. Don’t miss her on Saturday 18th May.

Brilliant Drama

Lifford Players presents: Happy Birthday Dear Alice!!!

Now in their 61st year, The Lifford Players take a touching and at times, hilarious look at ageing. The story centres around Alice as she celebrates her 70th birthday. In fl ashbacks she recalls former birthdays as her children try to convince her its time to enter a retirement residence. Alice has other ideas in which her dead husband’s partner Jimmy has a major role. A raging bull and faulty hearing aids also fi gure prominently in the plot! This will

Live Music, Drama and Family Entertainment

It’s all at the Alley this Maybe a guaranteed evening of great entertainment. This entertaining drama will be at the Alley Thea-tre on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th May.

The History of the Troubles (accordin’ to my Da) Back by Popular DemandYes, it’s back on Friday 17th May. The most suc-cessful comedy play to come out of Northern Ireland in modern times. The History Of The Trou-bles (accordin’ to my Da) is a frenetic, hilarious laugh-a-minute comedy about the Northern Irish troubles.

The play takes us through Gerry Courtney’s strug-gle to retain his sanity during chaotic events such as Interment, Bloody Sunday, No- Go Barricades, The Loyalist Workers Strike, The Hunger Strikes, Sectarian Tensions, Bill Clinton’s visit and Cease-fi res. Along the way we meet some of the mad-dest, baddest, funniest characters Belfast has ever known. As is tradition, the play will contain a hilarious up-to-the minute section on latest North-ern Ireland developments

The Wood of the CrowsThe Story of Half Hanged McNaughton

This is the moving story of the death of the young and beautiful women Prehen House estate heiress, Miss Mary Ann Knox, who died by the hand of her much older lover, Mr John McNaughton. Was the fatal shot that killed Mary Ann Knox an acci-dent, or an act of deliberate intent in order to seek revenge from her overprotective father, whose opposition to their marriage would lead to this most tragic drama? The story has engrained itself, down through the centuries into the consciousness of the North West. Set against the background of Ascendency Londonderry two hundred and fi fty years ago, this stunning production is a perceptive portrayal of Georgian manners ... and ill manners! Thursday 30th May at 8pm.

Derek AcorahThe Eternal Spirits Tour

A new tour for 2013 starring one of the most respected Spiritualist Mediums of a generation. Given the very nature of this controversial subject it is of course important to be insightful and accu-

rate as well as to be able to communicate. However to fi ll theatres across the land requires not just these talents but also the ability to enter-tain. It requires a sensitive delivery and a warmth so often absent. Derek Acorah has all of this and more. Described by The Guardian newspaper as “The Model Of The Modern Medium” Derek’s sincere and friendly approach marks him out as someone very special as he continues to bring help and support to so many. If you only see one event of it’s kind this year. Make sure it is Derek Acorah in The Eternal Spirits Tour on Friday 24th May.

The Protest Singer’s Muse

Whatever your views on ‘Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead’ climbing its way up the hit parade in the wake of Margaret Thatcher’s death, one thing is certain: the self-pro-claimed ‘Iron Lady’ in both life and death has been a consistent muse for music and most of it in opposi-tion.

As Christy Moore once put it when discussing his version of ‘Ordinary Man’, a song written by Grimsby songwriter Peter Hames about a factory worker losing his job as the plant closes down then struggling to survive: “I’ll say one thing about Thatcher, some fantastic songs were written during her reign.”

He’s not wrong. No one individual instigated a similar surge of musical protest during the 1980s and with the possible exception of George W Bush, political fi gures who followed in her wake have never had to run a similar musical gauntlet, which says more about modern day apathy than it does those fi gures in question. More on that later.

Margaret Thatcher certainly gave the socially aware artists of the 80s a lot to chew on and most spat back with venom. Penny Rimbaud of anarcho-punk radicals Crass once told music writer Dorian Lynskey: “I think Thatcher was an absolute fairy godmother. Christ, you’re an anarchist band trying to complain about the workings of capitalist soci-ety and you get someone like Thatcher. What a joy!”

One of the leading fi gures of protest against Thatcher during her tenure as UK Prime Minister was Billy Bragg, whose songs like ‘Between The Wars’, ‘Ideology’, ‘It Says Here’ and his bitter reinvention of the old Florence Reece folk ballad

‘Which Side Are You On?’ all tapped into Thatch-er’s fi ght with the Trade Unions, the fall-out of the Miners’ strikes and, as Bragg viewed it, a Tory-biased tabloid media.

Songs about urban decay, deindustrialisation, unemployment and violence in inner cities do not get to number one in the charts anymore. How-ever, in 1981, two years into Thatcher’s time in power, they most certainly did. ‘Ghost Town’ by Ska-legends The Specials spent three weeks at the top of the hit parade that summer. It was written the previous autumn after the band travelled to Glasgow for a gig only to be met with the sight of elderly women selling their belongings in the street. Specials keyboardist and lyricist Jerry Dam-mers took the memory of this and expanded it to an apocalyptic vision of a jobless society, boarded up and fi ghting with itself. It was hardly a vision Dammers had diffi culty imagining, as riots were a regular occurrence on the streets and the National Front movement began instigating a programme of “direct action” by infi ltrating the football terraces and the skinhead movement, gaining headlines by causing as much trouble as they could at any given place or time, Specials gigs included.

It was an ugly period and ‘Ghost Town’ details it vividly, and in the midst of it all Neville Staples shouts, “Government leaving the youth on the shelf!” It is worth pointing out that the Conserva-tive Government was only in power for a short period when ‘Ghost Town’ was written, thereby inheriting the failures of the former Labour Gov-ernment. However, just as with Alan Bleasdale’s powerful Liverpool based drama series ‘The Boys From The Black Stuff’, written in 1978 under a Labour Government, ‘Ghost Town’ remains aligned with Thatcher’s Britain regardless. Former Smiths frontman, Morrissey has never been a shrinking violet when it comes to the writ-ten word. Even after the announcement of Thatch-

er’s death he was quick to rise from his sickbed to air his contempt. It’s nothing new for Mozza, clos-ing his 1988 album ‘Viva Hate’ with a song called ‘Margaret On The Guillotine’, which in 1986 was rumoured to be the proposed title of The Smiths’ third album. They opted for ‘The Queen Is Dead’ instead!

During the Falklands War of 1982, Elvis Costello felt compelled to write a song called ‘Shipbuild-ing’. The lyrics examine the contradiction of the war bringing back prosperity to traditional ship-building areas of Clydeside, Tyneside, North East England and Belfast to build new ships to replace those being sunk in the war, whilst also sending off the sons of these areas to fi ght and, potentially, lose their lives in those same ships.

The song was then recorded by Robert Wyatt, reaching 36 in the UK charts, with the key line being, “Diving for dear life when we could be diving for pearls.” Costello went on to be even more scathing towards the Prime Minister in ‘Tramp The Dirt Down’.Thatcher even inspired artists to collectively rally together in the hope of ousting her from power.

‘Red Wedge’ was a gathering of musicians who attempted to engage young people with politics in general and the policies of the Labour Party in particular, during the period leading up to the 1987 general election. The campaign was spearheaded by Billy Bragg, Paul Weller and The Communards lead singer Jimmy Somerville, as they put on con-cert tours and appeared in the media, adding their support to the Labour Party campaign.

The fi rst ‘Red Wedge’ tour featured Bragg, Weller’s band The Style Council, The Commu-nards, Junior Giscombe, Lorna Gee and Jerry Dammers, and picked up guest appearances from Madness, Heaven 17, Bananarama, Prefab Sprout, Elvis Costello, Gary Kemp, Tom Robinson, Sade, The Beat, Lloyd Cole, The Blow Monkeys and The Smiths along the way. Ultimately the cam-paign proved to be no match for the ‘Iron Lady’ as the 1987 General Election produced a third succes-sive Conservative victory.

When Thatcher left Downing Street in 1990, so too, it seemed, did the idea of protest in pop. Music has failed by and large to get involved with social issues ever since, and those who do go down such a path are mostly marginalised. While there are those who believe that pop and politics should never mix, there is also a body of people who love to make decisions affecting peoples’ lives while they’re under a Gangnam-Harry-Styled hypno-sis, so a timely reminder within that very medium wouldn’t hurt!

While none of the 80s school of protest stopped Margaret Thatcher from carrying out her inten-tions when in power, the willingness and right to oppose still warrants and gains remembrance. But is it just remembrance now? We will never live in a blissful utopia where all the wrongs of the world are put right, so where’s the opposition today? It would be wrong to say there are no such fi gures in contemporary music. One is Frank Turner, who actually performed in Dicey Rileys, Strabane in 2006. On the night he performed a song called ‘Thatcher F***** The Kids’, which explores the apathy of the youth of today, laying the blame on the doorstep of the ‘Iron Lady’ herself. “So all the kids are b*******, but don’t blame them, they learn by example. Blame the folks who sold the future for the highest bid,” sang Turner, with sharp cynicism.

So are we done with this sort of thing? Many a ‘Ghost Town’ is still there to be seen but not too many feel like singing about it. Is music now exclusively an escape and nothing else? Do we really want ‘Harlem Shake’, ‘Hollyoaks’ and to get wasted on Buckfast at the weekend instead? If so, fi ne, noble endeavours, but forget about ‘Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead’, the encore would appear to be reserved for the ‘Iron Lady’ herself.

We lost weight and gained a chance!

James and Joyce Quinn, believe drop-ping the weight has saved James’ life, as well as rescuing their marriage.James gained weight after being made redundant from his job as a sports instructor two decades ago, he says: “When we got married 27 years ago, I weighed 10st. I was a sports instructor and very active, but I lost my job and went to work as a manager in a video shop. I was eating all the same foods, lots of crisps and chocolate bars, but I wasn’t burning them off anymore. I gained weight quite quickly, suddenly I was 12st, then 14st and it went up and up. I’d go on crazy diets and lose a stone but as soon as I stopped I’d put it all – and more – back on.”“In 2011 I’d given up on life. I genuinely thought my family would be better off if I went to sleep one night and didn’t wake up in the morning. I felt like a burden to them. I was so tired all the time I didn’t do anything around the house, Joyce did everything for me and it was affecting our relationship.”The turning point came when James got measured for a kilt for his niece’s wedding and discovered his waist was 62” – the biggest size available. Soon afterwards in March 2011 his niece invited him along to his local Slimming World group, and Joyce and their four

children pledged to support him.Joyce said: “I was so worried about James that I didn’t give my own weight any thought, I suppose next to James I didn’t look very big so I thought I was fi ne. But my weight had been creep-ing up since I’d had our children, and it was when I saw a photo of myself that I realised I actually needed to lose weight too. That night when James went to Slimming World for the fi rst time, we all decided we were going to do it with him. We knew it was his last chance.”So the couple began following Slim-ming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. In the fi rst week James lost 11½lbs and Joyce soon began to see a difference too. Within 12 months James had lost 12st and Joyce was 2st lighter but, after beginning to struggle to lose weight at home, Joyce decided to join James at his weekly Slimming World group.“James would come home each week buzzing with excitement and enthu-siasm and I wanted that too. Getting that support each week really made a difference. It’s amazing how people talk to you and give you ideas, when you think you’re stuck they help you to fi nd a way and they never judge you – it’s like a big family. We couldn’t

have done it alone and we still go to our group every week even now we’ve reached our target weights, it’s like our weekly night out and we wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Now James has lost 15st 12½lb and 30in from his waist, and Joyce has dropped 4st 5lb, going from a size 18 to a 12. “Life is completely differ-ent now,” says Joyce. “We walk eve-rywhere now instead of getting a bus or taxi and even play badminton and go swimming. Where before we used to choose what we’d eat by what was quickest and easiest including fast foods, takeaways and ready meals, now we love cooking and trying new recipes. James makes gorgeous curries and I love hearty homemade soups. Our whole family eats differ-ently now, two of our children left home recently and they’ve taken healthy eating with them.”“We’re much closer as a couple now too. Recently I asked Joyce, ‘How long do you think our marriage would have lasted if we hadn’t lost weight?’ She said, ‘How long do you think you would have lived?’ We feel like we’ve been given a second chance thanks to Slimming World and we’re loving every minute of it.”For details of your local groups visit www. slimmingworld.com There’s sure to be one on a day and time that suits you.Let’s make this a sensational Summer! A warm welcome awaits you.

Award winning NWRC course provides perfect Study/Life balanceA mother of three is just a few short weeks away from achieving her dream of gaining a higher education qualifica-tion, all thanks to an innovative course on offer at North West Regional Col-lege. Strabane lady Siobhan McAleer, like many others, was keen to improve her qualifications and career prospects, but family responsibilities meant she couldn’t commit to studying in the traditional way. Responding to the need for more flexible learn-ing options, the Health and Social Care lecturers at North West Regional College developed a new fast-track course, allowing students to achieve a Higher National Certificate in just one academic year, as opposed to the traditional two year route. The pioneering approach not only offers the course in a shorter time, but also via blended learning, through which students attend some classes in Col-lege and can complete other modules online from home or anywhere they have online access. With the help of a range of online tools, including audio, video, text and practical exercises, the stu-dents can follow the module themselves, and ask for support from staff as required. All the materi-als were created especially by the teaching staff for the fast-track course. This innovation in e-learning has earned Jacque-line MacBride, Curriculum Manager for Higher Education and Access Courses in Health and Social Care, the Innovation in Teaching and Learn-ing award at the prestigious RSCni Innovation in e-Learning Awards, which are open to all provid-ers of Higher Education, Further Education and Training across the province.Jacqueline, with the assistance of Lecturer Susan McGrory and the College’s ILT Team, developed all the materials for the course. The team are delighted that one year on, the students are achiev-ing the same high standard of results as those

undertaking the same programme in two years. “The feedback from students and employers was that they would like to be able to undertake the HNC in one year and we were keen to meet their needs. It was time consuming to prepare new materials but we benefitted from staff develop-ment to help us use new technologies to deliver the course, and it has proven very successful with excellent results.”

FlexibleFor Siobhan the blended learning has made all the difference to her approach to her studies. “Because I have three children and I can be flexible, I can complete modules at home, or if I have spare time in class. It has also helped me immensely as I’m more ICT skilled now, able to upload and use

attachments which I couldn’t before – I couldn’t even turn on a computer when I started. The other benefit is that you get a lot of good feedback from your lecturer.” The ‘blended learning’ approach, and the sustained student achievement impressed the RSCni judging panel, who felt that what the NWRC Team have achieved should be promoted to other training providers across the UK.“This project demonstrates how effective the application of technology to learning can be when led by learner requirements. The judges were impressed by the broad-based approach to the design and delivery of the new course. There is good evidence of learner and staff responses to the new course including video evidence and it would be good to see this more widely promoted to the sector across the UK as a model for development

in other subject areas as it allows the shaping of learning around learners circumstances.”The College had double the reason to celebrate at the awards ceremony with the Network Services Team also winning a first place accolade, in the Innovation in Technical Infrastructure category. Continuing with the College’s ethos of making learning as uncomplicated as possible for students, IT Technicians Alan Mitchell and Daniel O’Brien integrated the use of Apple Technology on College computers, meaning students can log onto a Win-dows PC or Apple Mac and access their documents – something which would not have been possible before. The judges’ feedback emphasised just how this seemingly simple fix can make a real impact for learners. “The project takes a common problem for FE and HE providers of maintaining parity of access to resources for both Apple Mac users and computers using Windows. Previous solutions required users to log off from one machine and log-in to the other system on a new machine. The college have set up a unified system, which now removes barriers to applications and resources to allow learners to access the materials and ser-vices they need, regardless of the machine they are using. This is a step forward in integration.”By winning two of the three awards open to FE providers, North West Regional College show-cased not only the expertise and innovation of its staff, but its commitment to putting the learner’s needs first, allowing them every opportunity to access their chosen course and online resources, and to study in a way that best suits them, and their family or employers. This is a view echoed by mum of three Siobhan who will complete her course this June. “This has been a very positive experience for me, having the best of both worlds – class time with my lecturers and peers, and the ability to study at home, meeting the needs of my family.”

Strabane Mother of three Siobhan McAleer can now balance her family life and studies thanks to the one year Fast Track ‘Blended Learning’ course at North West Regional College.

Frylite Celebrating 25 Years Of Success

From their initial beginnings on the Dublin Road Industrial estate to the present day on their three-acre site in the Orchard Road, Frylite has always had a constantly evolving vision for the future, spearheaded by Managing Director Eamon McCay.

This has seen the business successfully create great job opportunities in Strabane, with the business currently bringing employment to over 100 people.

This involves the delivery of fresh oil to the customer’s premises and the collection of the waste oil at the same time. So far, Frylite’s customer base of over 7000 customers already enjoys the benefits of their unique oil manage-ment system.

With fresh concepts and a fruitful eye on the future, the Frylite success story is set to continue. And, after 25 years of great success and impeccably high standards of service, Frylite contin-ues to be at the cutting edge and

the forefront of the industry.

This year also marked the estab-lishment of a Charity Committee among the Frylite staff and they have agreed that the 25th anniver-sary, while a milestone to celebrate, is also a key opportunity to give something back.

The Committee have been working with Cancer Focus NI and a fundraising fun day has been planned for May 17, which will include a bed push from the Frylite premises right down through the town to Asda.

It promises to be a wonderful day out and all donations are welcome for what is a very good cause.

Habinteg Housing Association (Ire-land) in Lifford is running the Bally-duff Park golf classic again this year in Strabane Golf Club.

This will be the fi fth consecutive classic for this worthy cause. The funds raised have enabled the association to carry out a number of improve-ments - recent examples are the fi tting of internal doors in the apartment building with automatic opening and closing sensors and the develop-ment of a large park area. These initiatives hugely improve the mobility of all residents. The costs has been almost €15,000 and the classic makes expensive but hugely worthwhile initiatives like these possible.

Allstate Strabane Part of the CommunityAllstate NI has locations in Belfast,Derry and Strabane, employing over 2,000 people in Northern Ireland. TheStrabane office provides a range of business support services such as technical support and insurance policy processing, 24/7, 365 days a year, providing a first class customer service.

And the award goes to…..In December 2012, Allstate NI were awarded Investors in People Gold standard. Gold is the highest level of recognition available under the Investors in People framework and is a significant achievement given that, across the UK, less than 1% of organizations recognized under IiP have been successful at this level. “Gold represents achievement of world class best practice. It shows a truly cutting-edge organisation, operating at the very highest levels of people management practice using Investors in People to drive the business forward” - Investors in People. This prestigious award marked a great end to 2012 for Allstate NI.

In early March 2013, Allstate has been awarded a Gold Accessibility Award as part of the Change a Little Change a Lot Campaign. “Being one of the largest employers in Strabane, we take our role in the local community very seriously. We felt that getting involved with the Change a Little Change a Lot campaign would demonstrate our commitment to disability awareness and accessibility even further,” says Deirdre Doherty, HR Manager at Allstate Strabane. “We made very simple, but very effective changes” such as changes to recruitment flyers, incorporating disability awareness into induction training for new employees and arranging mental health first aid training for line managers, with plans to establish an employee-led Disability Awareness Committee.

The celebrations continued last month when Allstate Strabane retained their title as ‘Employer of the Year’ at the prestigious Strabane Business Awards. Allstate was described as ‘….a company embracing a philosophy which promotes a lifestyle and not just a job. Allstate’s success is down to its people and an innovative environment where employees are empowered to drive the business forward.’ The award was a great accolade for the Strabane site and a direct result of consistent focus on our people strategies: Training and Development; Employee Health and Wellbeing, Employee Engagement, Reward and Recognition.

Our People…Allstate NI’s Health and Wellbeing strategy takes into consideration 4 key areas: Your Money, Your Community, Your Health and Your Benefits. This is in addition to the competitive benefits package the company provides, which includes Dental, Eye Care, Contributory gym membership, Flu Vaccination, Childcare vouchers, lucrative bonus schemes not to mention an extensive range of flexible working options. 2012 also saw the launch of a key strategy to drive working from home as a viable option to employees, with the aim of improving their work-life balance - a successful addition to current flexible working policies.

Plans for quarterly Health and Well Being weeks were launched early this year, with the second event planned for early May. Staff has availed of personal trainer sessions, healthy eating options, wellbeing walks, onsite pampering events and free fruit and energy snacks.

We continue to emphasise training, development and progression. In the last 12 months, over 50 employees have been promoted to higher level roles, supporting our growth of 25% in 2012. This growth resulted in the expansion of the business to two further buildings.

The Training function is now resident in a purpose-built facility which has been equipped with 4 state-of-art classroom training suites. In addition, a third building now houses a further 96 staff, highlighting Allstate’s commitment to Strabane.

Allstate Strabane showed its appreciation for its staff on Thursday 6th September by holding its first ever ‘Employee Appreciation Day. The day comprised of a non-stop agenda of events and activities. The day kicked off with a three – way live video link from Allstate Executive Vice President, Suren Gupta who addressed the employee base from his office in Chicago, Illinois, and Bro McFerran, Allstate Northern Ireland Managing Director from his Belfast office. Both thanked the Strabane based staff for their efforts across the board in the last 12 months which have seen the Strabane site go through its most rapid expansion since opening a little over 9 years ago. Staff were treated to a complimentary lunch followed by an ‘Allstate Expo’- representatives from Allstate’s key employee committees manned stalls to remind staff of the benefits of working for Strabane’s largest employer. The day ended with a motivational speech to fourteen Allstate locations across three continents.

Several new development programmes were launched to employees; an entry level IT programme which provides extensive reskilling for Strabane staff to retrain in IT software development. A fast-track Team Manager programme has been implemented for aspiring managers and leaders of the future. The In My Good Hands (IMGH) initiative saw 56 staff trained in this customer service training ensuring staff have the necessary skills to manage their call, providing the client with the highest level of satisfaction possible. As we continue to build the Strabane site as a Centre of Excellence, we continue to roll out industry best practice training such as ITIL, KCS and SOX compliance. This should firmly place Allstate Strabane as an industry leader in the BPO and contact centre industry in Northern Ireland.

In addition, Allstate have demonstrated their commitment to the wellbeing of their staff by launching their Energy for Life programme. The Strabane Leadership team were among the first in Northern Ireland to avail of the programme which focuses on managing personal energy and expanding capacity without compromising health and happiness.

It’s not all work…The onsite Sports and Social Club continues to go from strength to strength. Membership has been increasing month on month for the past two years, with 400 of the Strabane’s 500-strong staff base now members. The onsite committee, made up of representatives of the workforce is responsible for organizing a varied programme of events through the year, with on average two events taking place per week. Recent events have included trips to the Sound of Music, Dundonald Ice Bowl, Go-karting, and Bowling which are all either heavily subsidized or free of charge. There are also several spin-off clubs including a Golf Society, Film and a monthly ‘movie and meal’ night. Upcoming events include onsite pamper evening, surfing lessons and a summer party.

Allstate supporting our communityBeing one of the largest employers in Strabane, brings great

responsibility, not only to our employees, but to their families and community. The Charities Committee runs many events on an on-going basis. An on-site Row-a-thon event in the last quarter of 2012, saw many employees participate in the event, raising funds for The Northlands Centre - drug/alcohol abuse shelter. Throughout the year various Dress Down days have raised money which has been donated to Meningitis Research and Good Morning Strabane – a local initiative for the elderly. The Charities Committee has also organised various raffles in aid of The Sperrin Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital and Breast Cancer Awareness. The Charities Committee has supported other Charity organisations such as, CLIC Sargent, MS Society, Make a Wish, Strabane Community Project, Riding for the Disabled, HURT & Chest Heart and Stroke. The Charities Committee also supports St. Vincent de Paul on an annual basis with their Toys for Tots and Hamper Appeal. The overall total raised by the Committee in 2012 was in excess of Stg12,000 and efforts this year to date are on target to exceed expectations.

School Employer ConnectionsThis 2 day work experience programme for 16 -18 year olds delivers exposure to working in a fast paced dynamic environment. Students have the opportunity to spend time in various business departments and attain an overview of the ANI operation in Strabane. To date, 16 students have taken part from schools in Strabane, Omagh and Derry. In June 2012, Allstate NI Strabane attended a Science Fair in Strabane Academy, with responsibility for judging the science projects and sponsored prizes of shopping vouchers & goodie bags.

Allstate NI Strabane’s Recruitment Event in the Alley Theatre, Strabane was a huge success, receiving a total of 265 applications, assessing 249 applicants, interviewing 130 applicants and making 85 job offers. Comments on the day included, “I’ve heard that Allstate is fantastic for employee satisfaction so it would be great to get employment there.” “I have a lot of friends who work in Allstate and from what they say it is a very good place to work.” The Strive 2 Work programme aimed at getting long term unemployed back into the work place has also been embraced by Allstate Strabane. The workshop organised by Business in the Community, in partnership with Job Directions Ltd, has successfully offered nine Strive 2 Work candidates full-time positions with the company.

Allstate Northern Ireland is one of the largest employers in Strabane, currently employing over 500 people at the Orchard Road site. Allstate NI is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Allstate Corporation, the largest publicly owned personal lines insurer in the US, providing insurance to almost 16 million households

Tommy is set to go the distance

“It looked ideal, with cheap hostels (albergues) and way marked trails,” explains Tommy, speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week. “There are various routes and I choose the most popular - the Camino Frances from St Jean Peid de Port in France. It crosses into Spain on the fi rst day and continues through Northern Spain, passing the cities of Pamplona Burgos Leon through the Provinces of Navarre Rojas Galicia to Santiago de Compostela. I continued on the route for another 120 Km to Finnisterre and Muxia. It was a wonderful experience with beautiful scenery and although I had been scep-tical as regards the spiritual experience I did fi nd it allowed me to think more clearly and readjust my attitude, which

at that time was decidedly pessimistic.”

Tommy met many wonderful people on the trek, mixing with fellow trekkers in the hostels at night, making friends he’s still in touch with today. He couldn’t wait to get back and the following year, after a short illness, he decided to test himself by adding another 550 miles to the Camino Frances by starting in Le Puy in France and then continuing on the Camino Frances which he had com-pleted in the year before.

“It was another wonderful experience although I had bad problems with my feet. France was two extremes: very busy in the popular walking areas such as the Lot Valley and extremely quiet in

the some areas. I spent in one area three days without speaking to a soul and observed an interesting lesson in trust. In the gites in France that didn’t have staff there would be a stocked fridge and cupboard with drinks and snacks and a price list. You were trusted to take what you wanted and leave the money. These were open to the street but they seemed to be untouched by thieves!” reveals Tommy. Now in 2013 he’s got the trek bug again

and intends to complete the French section again from Le Puy to St jean Pied de Port, and from there, four days across the Pyrenees on the GR10 path to Irun where he will start the Camino del Norte, a track along the Northern Coast of Spain through San Sebastion Bilbao Santander to Oviedo, where he’ll take the Primitivo route over the mountains to join the Camino Frances just before Santiago. Then it’s on to Finnisterre and Muxia again, all in all about 1100 miles

of beautiful scenery.

“As someone with an interest in the Spanish Civil War I’m particularly looking forward to visiting on route the town of Guernica bombed by the German Condor Legion, which is seen by many as a forerunner to the bombing tactics of Hitler’s air force in WW2,” explains Tommy.

For beautiful scenery and a very positive life experience Tommy would heartedly recommend walking on the Camino de Santiago. “The Camino Frances section has become very popular since the fi lm ‘The Way’. Most people don’t have the time to complete all of it in one year so many do a section of it one year and often return to complete it.

Quite a few from the North West are doing a part of it this year. My old walk-ing mate Joe Moran is going on the Camino Frances. Chris Devenney com-pleted the Camino Frances last year and at least one other lad from Strabane will also be on it this year,” He concludes.

Strabane man, Tommy Barr, is no stranger to long dis-tance treks and the avid rambler is set to take on another adventure this year. In 2011 Tommy was looking for a long distance trek that was affordable and would allow him to walk on his own. On the advice of a friend he considered the Camino de Santiago Compostella, an old pilgrimage trail to Santiago Compostella in Galicia in Northern Spain.

Strabane Novelist Publishes Her Debut

Caroline Doherty de Novoa

Caroline’s novel, ‘Dancing with Statues’ is available in paperback and on Kindle.

A central theme of the novel is the extent to which our history defi nes us. Caroline explores this through the story of Laura and Miguel. Laura is a young woman living in Northern Ireland, trapped by the tragic events of her past, until Miguel, a lawyer from Colombia, comes into her life offer-ing her a fresh perspective on the place she calls home — and the Troubles she lived through.

While not an autobiographical piece, Caroline could defi nitely draw from her own life for inspi-ration.

In 2002 she graduated from the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice. She then moved to London to train as a solicitor with Clifford Chance, one of the world’s top global law fi rms, where she would work for nearly a decade. Working on international cases at Clifford Chance gave her the opportunity to travel the world, as well as the chance to work in Madrid, a place she held in her heart, for six months. It was there that she met her future hus-band, Juan Novoa, a Colombian entrepreneur who was studying at Madrid’s famous business school.

They travelled often to Colombia, where Caroline found a culture very similar to the one she grew up in: friendly people, who knew how to have fun and weren’t afraid to laugh at themselves. After North-ern Ireland, it soon felt like her second home.

Caroline has worked as both a lawyer and a

teacher; she is now a writer and founding partner of Hotel Trail, a company that helps hotels prosper by giving them a true understanding of the guest experience. Together with her husband Juan, she now splits her time between the UK and Colombia.

At present, Caroline is in Bogotá, Columbia but the ‘Herald’ still managed to catch up with her for a few words last week, fi rstly to ask what drew her to writing.

“I’ve always loved great stories – whether they are in novels, plays or fi lm. I’ve always had stories and characters knocking around in my head. Eventually I decided I needed to start writing them down – not with the intention of being published – just to get them out of my head and on to the page. I took quite a few courses when I was living in London, and that really helped too and convinced me that this was

what I really loved doing,” Caroline explains.

So what exactly was the inspiration behind ‘Danc-ing with Statues’? “There’s a famous Gabriel Garcia Marquez quote that says: “Life is not what one has lived, but rather how one remembers it to recount it.” It shows the importance of storytelling in both our personal and our collective histories. For so long the stories about Northern Ireland and Colom-bia have focused on the confl icts – even though there’s so much more to tell about both these won-derful places,” Caroline stresses.

She continues, “I thought what better way to cel-ebrate them, and show a new reality, than by using them as a backdrop for a love story. ‘Dancing with Statues’ doesn’t shy away from Colombia’s or Northern Ireland’s recent troubled history, in fact the main characters have all lived through some dark moments, but ultimately it’s a hopeful novel about moving on from the past. I hope it gives people a new perspective on the two places I call home.”

‘Dancing with Statues’ was published in paperback in February and on kindle in March. It has already garnered several glowing reviews. LuxuryReading.com has described it as “high calibre” and “heart-breaking”. The Luxury Reading reviewer noted that “Caroline Doherty de Novoa is a talented writer; I loved her writing style and found several passages throughout the book that I wanted to save and re-read at a later time.”

As for the future, Caroline is already focused on her next novel. “It tells the tale of ghosts living in London. It’s a chance for me to write about another place that is very close to my heart. Using Ghosts as a device, I’m hoping to explore the human experi-ence as well as see what it was like in London at pivotal moments throughout the twentieth century.

In terms of the story, it’s a tale of love – both unre-quited and lost – and revenge,” she explains.

You can learn more about Caroline on her per-sonal website: www.carolinedohertydenovoa.com. ‘Dancing with Statues’ is currently available from all Amazon sites in paperback and kindle format. It will soon be available in stores.

A novel exploring the ‘Troubles’ and life today has recently been pub-lished and it has come from the pen of a Strabane woman. ‘Dancing With Statues’ by Caroline Doherty de Novoa centres around love and mystery in post-confl ict Northern Ireland, shedding light on the present day while grappling with questions on how it can come to terms with its past, and move forward to a brighter future.

‘Felix McCrossan Memorial Football Quiz’ set to Kick-off in Diceys

With the football season set to wind down this month and with no major summer tournaments to chew on, it looked like it was going to be quiet summer. However, Dicey Rileys in Strabane has other ideas with the inaugural ‘Felix McCrossan Memo-rial Football Quiz’ set to get under way at the end of the month.

The weekly quiz tournament will be a special tribute to a man who gave so much to the local footballing community and beyond; a man who no doubt would’ve been in the thick of the action at such an event.

The sad passing of Felix McCrossan in Febru-ary of this year was followed by fitting tributes to “a man of integrity” and “a powerhouse trade unionist”.

His name will always be synonymous with football in Strabane, with many future events, this quiz included, a testament to that.

The Quiz is open to 24 teams of three and will take on a World Cup format. The teams will be drawn into groups of four with the top teams from each group progressing to the knock-

out stages. It is hoped that the Quiz can get under way on the final Friday of May and then run throughout the summer.

Questions will vary from the domestic game to international football from all eras, so make sure you have a heavy hitter within your ranks!

Any teams interested in getting involved are advised to contact Dicey Rileys as soon as possible for more information.

Quiz in honour of the late Felix McCrossan.

Around the tables at the Meningitis Research Golf Classic Presentation

THANK YOU!A few months ago a date was set to organ-ise a Golf Classic at Strabane Golf Club in aid of Meningitis Research Foundation. On Sunday 21st April the event took place and exceeded all expectations! The success of such - without doubt – was down to the sponsors, the players and the organising committee and without your sup-port and participation on the day, the event would not have been as successful as it was. All in all, 130 sponsorships of tees and prizes was donated and 64 teams took part on the day - an astounding result and a highly rewarding and enjoy-able day. The event itself was a two-fold occasion being both a fund-raiser and a day to raise awareness of Meningitis. A phenomenal amount of £13,000 was raised and presented to Meningitis Research Foundation who are deeply indebted by the generosity and support shown by all. To all the sponsors, a very sincere thank you for your donations, to the players – your presence and partici-pation made the day the success that it was and to Strabane Golf Club, and all staff involved, thank you for the use of the facilities and the very effi cient service provided.

Two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots MusicBirds of Chicago, is a collective based around the remarkable talents of JT Nero and Allison Russell. Whether touring as a duo or with the full family band (their Balor gig will be as a 4 piece) Nero and Russell have emerged as two of the most compel-ling new voices in North American Roots music.Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones is a fi ne thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul. This is a gig that we’re really excited about.

I am a Reiki Master/Teacher with HTSO (Holistic Teach-ing and Support Organanisa-tion)

My Reiki journey began back in 2009 a friend encouraged me to try a Reiki 1 Workshop in The Gatelodge, Derry facilitated by Joanne McMillan (Founder of HTSO). I completed my First Level Usui Reiki and my Reiki journey began.

I believe everything is Divinely timed and HTSO was instrumental in taking me from Reiki Master/Practioner to Teacher swiftly and easily. The connection I found to this Uni-versal light, life energy, through the modality of Reiki, has supported me in leaving the past in the past and sur-rendering completely to the fl ow of life. When I need help, I ask and trust that a higher power will immediately offer assistance.

I never cease to be amazed by the power of Reiki, a Divine energy that has all the answers to life’s questions, all the solutions to life’s problems. A unique, gentle but pow-erful ‘life force’ available to all. My journey is an on-going process, humbling and exhilarating. Humbling in that I continue to learn from the clients that I treat and students I meet and exhilarating because I am living what I love.

Learn Reiki in 3 stages:First Degree/Reiki 1

What is Reiki?Reiki is a system of healing that originated in Japan and was developed by Dr Usui in the early 20th century. Reiki is a type of spiritual practise used as complementary therapy to treat physi-cal, mental and emotional illnesses. A Reiki practioner aims to change and bal-ance the energy fi elds in and around the body, this treats on a physical, psycho-logical, emotional and spiritual level. Reiki is a Japenese word that translates as Universal Light Energy. The easiest way to understand its meaning is to split the word.‘Rei’ means God or light or the whole of creation. Every cell, every blade of grass, stone or tree......All that is.Ki’ translates as life energy, the vital energy that sustains life. Most forms of Martial Arts such as Tai Chi acknowledg-esthe presence of this energy and focuses on channeling ki throughout the body to increase health, balance and well-being. This energy has a consciousness of its own based on the highest good for all.

Many cultures have known since ancient times that an unseen energy fl ows through all living things. This energy is directly related to the quality of health we experience. In recent scientifi c experiments, this ‘life force’ energy has been verifi ed and medical doctors are now considering the role that this energy plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

A useful link, www.cancerresearchuk.org/cancerexplains that Reiki can be used in pallatative care, especially in Hospices and as more research is carried out, Reiki has been proven to be an essential com-

plementary therapy alongside medical treatment. The National Health Service (NHS) of the UK includes Reiki as part of its CAM (Complementary Medicine Program). So Reiki offers a powerful tool to interact with the modern world and still keeping in touch with life on a deeper level. It provides the support we need tofeel strong, to let go of the past and to walk fearless into the future.Reiki Treatments A Reiki treatment feels like a warm, glowing radiance fl owing through and surrounding the body. Reiki treats the whole person, including body, emotion, mind and spirit. The treatment process is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self improvement.

The benefi ts of a Reiki treatments are;• Adapts to the needs of the recipient,• Helps meditative states• Promotes personal awareness,• Enhances spiritual connectio• Fosters self healingRelaxes and reduces stress.

Summer Beauty Secrets!

Hallelujah Summer is here! With the start of every season brings exciting hot new make-up looks and products for to us all to lust after. Ladies, there is lots to think about in the coming weeks to get our bodies primed and looking fabulous, for the long summer days we are all praying for. This month I’m going to concentrate on eye artistry made easy along with BB Skin and exciting new events at McEl-hinneys.We all know how tricky applying eye make-up can be, that’s why are all loving the fabulous new Lancome Hyp-nose Palettes which offer an abundance of shades and effects to blend and layer your eye make-up. With a selection of twelve shades, choose from four Doll Eyes shade which will deliver a fresh and natural wide-open eyes, four Star Eyes shades with chic and elegant harmo-nies for sophisticated eyes and four Drama Eyes for a spectacular eyes using intense and smoky hues all with brand new high-precision applicators.Using “Wet” Technology, Lancome have developed a revolutionising eye make-up. It works by dispers-ing eye shadow pigments within a fl uid. As the fl uid evaporates, it leaves an ultra-concentrate of colour on skin, infused with remarkably even and perfectly situated pearl pigments. Not only does “Wet” technol-ogy guarantee an even texture, it also means that the pearl pigments are not crushed like in some compact eye shadows, but coated to maintain all their colour

vibrancy. Pigments express their full colour potential. So here’s the guide to Spectacular eyes in a few simple steps:Begin with a gen-erous application of the main shade (1) over the upper lid using the foam applicator.Use the middle shade (2) to adorn the eyebrow arch, working from the hollow up to the brow to emphasise the upper part of the eye and enhance its depth.Intensify this depth by boldly darkening the eye con-tour with the eyeliner shade (3). Do not be afraid to broaden the lash line using the edge of the spatula, especially towards the outside of the eye.Load a brush with the main shade (4) and shade in the lid. Work along the lower part of the eyebrow arch, elongating the hollow of the socket outwards. Use the brush to blend out defi ned areas, helping to create a seamless, graduated effect, elegantly framing the eye.Add a fi nal touch of radiance to the upper inner corner using the lightest shade (5). With its cushiony yet precise tip, the foam applica-tor creates a concentrate of pure light at the heart of the eye.To create volume worthy of this show-stopping design, apply at least two coats of Hypnôse Drama mascara to magnify your lashes’ volume and create spectacular curl.As always, do call instore to McElhinneys Cosmetics hall where our team of Make-up and Skin Consultants are available offering advice and guidance. What is BB creams? WWW.MCELHINNEYS.COMThe Summer is on it’s way and the runways have exploded with so many fantastic trends that you’ll be spoilt for choice when planning your shopping spree. So let’s take a look at the hottest trends for Summer 2013 before you get down to making those all-important fashion decisions.

This year Retro is back and has never looked so good. Moschino, Prada, Marni and many other fashion houses dived into the 1960s for inspiration. This retro trend is reflected through cropped bra tops, babydoll dresses, small box bags and flower power style patterns. If you want the bold print in your outfit to do all the talking, keep your accessories simple. While stripes in classic colour combinations of white, navy and burgundy are still going strong, take some inspiration from the catwalks and try this year’s eye-catching combos with black, white and yellow. You’ll find everything you need to keep right on trend at wonderful prices.

Spring is in the Air!

Fear can consume you if you do not learn how to deal with it.

After what seems a long dark winter there are defi nite signs of spring all around us. Daffodils are up and the trees are budding beau-tifully.

There is a lot of bird activity at the moment and although it is still very cold we can sense that spring is in the air. It is wonderful too that the mornings are brighter and it gets dark much later in the evenings.

All these changes bring changes to our well being also. We tend to feel better within our-selves and are much more motivated to get outside and do something. We realise the lawn needs cut and the fl ower beds need attended to and the leaves left from autumn need to be brushed up, lifted and put in the compost heap or the brown bin.

It’s at this time too that I enjoy getting out and walking. Even though it can be very cold in the mornings I put on warm clothes and head out. My goal is to get myself fi t for the summer months so I can enjoy whatever I plan to do. For me walking is very important as it can give me a good idea of my state of health. I start off walking at a pace that I can keep my mouth closed and breathe only in and out through the nose.

My pace is dictated by nasal breathing param-eters. If I fi nd it too diffi cult to breath in and out through the nose I am simply walking too fast. If it is too easy I quicken the pace to create a feeling that I am not just getting enough breath. Keep this pace however never let the feeling of discomfort get too acute as it could make

you open your mouth. Remember breathing through the mouth is never an option. With practice you will be able to fi nd a pace that is right for you as you can retain the feeling of just ‘not getting enough air’ without fear or panic.

This mild feeling of ‘not getting enough air’ gives your body a workout in very special ways. Reducing breathing in this way increases blood fl ow by allowing blood vessels to dilate. You will feel warmer as you practice walking like this.

For those more ambitious folk who fi nd it very easy to walk with mouth closed even at a fast pace, the next stage is to do small breath holds whilst walking. Simply take a small breath in through the nose, take a small breath out through the nose - hold the breath on the out breath for 2, 3, 4, 5 or more steps.

Just do as many steps as it takes to make you feel slightly uncomfortable and with practice increase the number of steps. Take it easy and slowly at the start.

Again with practice you will get better at it. In fact if you keep at it you will be able to jog or run for short distances initially with mouth closed and as your body gets conditioned, albeit slowly, you will be able to run as fast as you dare with mouth closed and with intermittent breath holds along the way.

Now this takes a lot of practice however it is my goal to achieve this conditioning every year at this time. It keeps me fi t and healthy and gives me a great indication of my general health. Have a go, however remember to take it easy and slowly and enjoy getting to know your body.Tom Herron

Spring is here...

We tend to feel better within ourselves and are much more motivated to get outside and do something.

Practising on the golf course...what a novel idea!I often ask the players I work with ‘how much practice do you do on the golf course?’ The look I gen-erally get is one of ‘why on earth would I do that?

Practice is what I do on the range. Surely I go to the golf course to play golf’. Yet, this single issue is maybe one of the main reasons why most golf-ers know the person who goes to the range, they know the person who goes out to play on the golf course and they are not one of the same! We are a pretty unique sport in the sense that most of our practice is done in an environment which has little or no bearing on the actual game. I would imagine a snooker player does most of his practice on a snooker table, a tennis player on a court and footballer on a pitch. Yet, as golfers we spend hour after hour on a range that is about as far removed from the context of the golf course as it is possible to be.

Remember those two words as you go forward with your game this year, context and environ-ment. Both of these two factors have a huge impact on you psychologically. Do you behave the same way in the environment called a football terrace as you would in the environment called

offi ce? Hopefully not!We are shaped enormously by the environment and the context we fi nd ourselves in. Our brain ‘codes’ these environments and creates templates of how to respond in these specifi c locations. The context called ‘wedding reception’ brings

out a certain type of behaviour that is structured to respond to the situation the brain is presented with, just as the context called ‘stag party’ brings out an altogether different set of behaviours. Much of the testing and analysis we do with our golf, such as putting labs and fi tting centres, take place in an environment which is very differ-ent than the one we play in. This doesn’t mean we can’t learn very valuable information about our game with these scientifi c aids, but we must understand they cannot tell the whole story of how that particular person will respond in the environment of a golf course and the context of a competition.

The more you are exposed to a particular environ-ment and context, the more your brain will fi nd a way of dealing with the situation and making the best of it. Yet, if we continually avoid the situa-tion and hide out in the sanctuary of the range, then your brain will constantly feel ill at ease on the golf course. Maybe this year you decide you are going to do things a little differently and give your brain a chance to adapt to the golf course environment by actually spending more time there. You can play some wonderful practice games on course that will have a big impact on your game and you will start to fi nd there is less trepidation

in playing come tournament time. Even the very best players fall into this trap. On a recent trip to Florida, Graeme McDowell admitted he had become a little bit too fond of walking out of his villa at Lake Nona and just bashing golf balls on the range which is right next to his house. This year marked a new commitment for him to play more roll-up game with the members to get his brain tuned into ‘match mode’.

Here are some suggestions as to some ‘games’ to play on the course that will not only develop your game but are fun to do as well.

• 3 Club Challenge – take just three clubs out with you and your putter and see how you get on. You will be surprised at how creative you can become.• Worst Ball – only when the course is quiet but play two balls on each hole. You have to select the worst ball all the way into the hole. This is TOUGH but well worth the effort.• Iron Off The Tee – play nine holes only hitting an iron off the tee. Again, you will be surprised as to how low you will score.Just a few examples of the many games I get the players I work with to play. The main aspect is to commit to Playing more so that your brain gets used to the Context of golf in the environment of the golf course

Top players like Graeme McDowell can even fall into the trap!

Strabane Athletic F.C. Club NotesN.I Intermediate League

Draperstown Celtic 1 v 2 Strabane Athletic

A goal in the fi nal minute from Sean Ferry saw Athletic end their league campaign on a winning note. A tight affair throughout saw Athletic create by far the better chances and if not for bad fi nishing the game would’ve be over as a contest before the second half even kicked off. The other scoring on the night was Jason McGrinder who will no doubt take home yet another top goal scorer gong at this years prize giving / dinner dance.

NIIL Challenge Cup Semi-Final

Strabane Athletic 1 v 0 NewbuildingsAthletic are into yet another cup fi nal after defeating double winners Newbuildings Utd at Melvin Park on a windy and wet afternoon. A 30+ yard thunder bolt from top goal scorer Jason McGrinder settle the game at the end, a goal that had both camps applaud-ing and it was appropriate that it came from arguably the league’s stand out player of the season. Athletic bossed the game throughout but just couldn’t fi nd the fi nishing touch that much of their build-up play deserved. Keeping the ball grounded was a necessity as the windy conditions made it impossible to play any accurate long balls. With little goal mouth action in the fi rst half, except for the goal and another shot that was pushed onto the upright by the ‘Buildings keeper, Strabane went into the break on the up knowing they had their rivals on the back foot. The second period should’ve seen Athletic out of sight with Winters in goals a mere spectator. Ferry, playing on his own up front and chasing everything that moved, hassled the defenders to make long clearances that Athletics’ defence dealt with, with ease. With Donaghey, Devine and McGrinder controlling the central midfi eld Strabane created chance after chance. Ferry had a shot cleared off the line after rounding the keeper; another blocked by a last ditch tackle and a few efforts that were pulled wide when in good looking positions. McMullan hit the crossbar with a curling shot from 25 yards on the angle which the ‘Buildings keeper could only watch and admire. He also saw a clear cut penalty decision given as a free kick when he was brought down by the ‘Buildings keeper (who many would argue should’ve been sent on his way) a few feet inside the area. Devine saw a long range effort sail inches wide and McGrinder placed a shot just over the bar in a crowded box. Strabane were grateful for the fi nal whistle and now fi nd themselves in another fi nal against Ardstraw who defeated Oxford Utd Stars. The curtain raiser will take place at Mount-joy United’s ground on Saturday 11th May at 2pm. The club would like to see the same support that greeted the team in their fi rst fi nal against Newbuildings over the New Year, hopefully this time the result and per-formance will be a more positive one.

F&W Division 1Strabane Athletic Reserves

1 v 1 Dergview ReservesAthletics’ Reserve team endured a frustrat-ing time against fellow strugglers Dergview Reserves at a cold, brisk Melvin Park on Saturday afternoon eventually thankful for a point after dominating play and having the majority of chances throughout the game. In a dominant fi rst period, Athletics’ best

two chances saw Aodhan Doherty fi rst hit the bar before seeing a second effort cleared off the line. With the score deadlocked at the interval, Athletic opened the scoring early in the second period from an unlikely source. Full back, Kevin Patterson, who has played for the club since their formation, scored his fi rst goal for Athletic and a crucial goal it was to become. With his confi dence at an all-time high he saw another effort bril-liantly saved by the ‘Derg’ keeper and with that the tide turned. Dergview found a new lease of life and push Athletic back but their goal came after of a howler from the usu-ally reliable Early in goals. What seemed like a routine catch, Early somehow let the ball squirm through his hands an into his goal. Dergview then saw an opportunity to steal all 3 points when their forward broke the offside trap and found himself one-on-one with Early but he lost his composure at the crucial point and luck was to be on the host’s side as his tame effort went harm-lessly wide. The last chance of the game fell to young Molloy but the Athletic left winger saw his half chance pulled wide from 15 yards on the angle. The point apiece does little for either club as both are looking over their shoulders and any further slip ups over the fi nal few weeks could undoubtedly see them relegated from the top tier of the F&W league.

NW Saturday MorningStrabane Athletic 3 v 2

Tamnaherin Celtic

Terry Conroy’s charges celebrate their pro-motion to the Premier Division with an easy win against Tamnaherin Celtic. The score line may suggest that it was a great entertaining game but truth be told Athletic dominated this fi xture and could’ve racked up goals at will if not for some indecisive fi nishing and slack fi nal deliveries. Celtic opening the scoring against the run of play with Athletic responding to fi re 3 goals in quick succession through the impres-sive O’Reilly (2) and the joyful Coyle who provided everyone with a little bit of extra entertainment when he completed his cus-tomary cartwheel-back fl ip celebration. Athletic passed the ball around with styl-ish composure and attacked at will. They conceded a late 2nd but with the result not having any implications on their promotion it was a blip and they closed out the game on the front foot again. Conroy stated that his players deserved eve-rything they have achieved this year; “they have put the hard work in on the training pitch, it’s a young squad with various play-

ers helping the 1st team out on many occa-sions. Next season will be diffi cult but I’m posi-tive we will not be pushed aside. We have a winning mentality throughout the club so hopefully we can show everyone through-out the North West what talented footballers this town has”.

YouthsThe clubs U16 team defeated St Patrick’s 5-1 (Murray 2, McCormick, McBride & Grant) in their opening game of the season but then were defeated 5-3 by Fintona Swifts (Murray 2 & Coyle). The U14 team defeated Mountjoy Utd 2-1 in their opening fi xture (McCay & Sweeney) and like their elders suffered a defeat in their second fi x-ture away to Lisnaskea Rovers, going down 4-0.
