Jim explains, “It was one of the most wonderful feelings ever to hear my name called out as one of the automatic choices from the public vote, it just capped off what has been a wonderful week for myself and my wife Orlagh after the birth of our first child, Ella who was born on the previous Wednesday.” Jim remarked that he now knows the road to Dublin as well as the road to Douglas Bridge having trav- elled it so often during the past week to be with his wife and new baby. “It was a really early start for rehearsals on the day of the live show we all had to be at the Helix for 7.30am and with an hour less in bed I don’t know where we summoned up the energy but it was all well worth it in the end I have been running on adrenalin ever since.” Jim will next appear on the live shows on Easter Sunday night and is again really looking forward to the experience, “The Helix is a really brilliant arena for the event although quite intimate in comparison to some other arenas, the sound quality within the hall is amazing, although when listening back to some of the performances it does not always come across quite as good on live television. The song choice is so important and holding your nerve is the key to everything, it is so nerve wrecking standing there waiting for your name to be called to go and per- form your song knowing you only have 1min 30 seconds to put it over to the public!” “The judges remarked that they would prefer to hear me sing some country stuff and although I do love American country music, I do like to cover all types of music and I hope I have a wee surprise lined up for the next show.” “Kian Eagan has been brilliant to work with and has been really helpful throughout even if we have some small differences on choice of song, I really have enjoyed working and Learning from him.” “Sharon Corr too has been very supportive of me and we have become good friends she has told me of her great fondness for the Lifford Strabane area where indeed her Mother came from.” Jim goes on to acknowledge the huge support he has been receiving in recent weeks from people not just from the North West but from all over! Jim wants to thank everybody who has voted and supported and campaigned for him. He also wishes to thank the local media, especially the Strabane Herald for all the support and coverage he has recieved. So this Easter Sunday please support our Jim on his journey, hopefully it will end with joy. Jim has had an amazing time so far and he looks forward to meeting lots of local people and doing a few local shows aswell...good luck Jim! Douglas Bridge man Jim Devine is still well in the hunt for ‘The Voice of Ireland’ title after successfully negotiating his way through the first two live shows at the Helix arena in Dublin. UV Light: A Significant Threat to Healthy VisionUV rays have a direct and irrevers-ible impact on eye health: UV light has been proven to accelerate eye ageing, skin cancer and the appear-ance of cataracts. It is estimated that around 15 million people world-wide become blind from cataracts annually, of which up to 20% may be caused or aggravated by UV exposure. In addition 5 to 10% of skin cancers, also directly linked to UV rays, appear in the eye periphery. UV rays pose a threat 365 days a year, even in cloudy weather as 40% of UV exposure occurs when people are not in full sunlight.

Essilor’s new solution: Exclusive backside UV Protection

Most lenses prevent transmission of the majority of the UV rays hitting the front side of the lens. How-ever, up until now, even the best clear eyeglasses did not protect against the danger of the UV rays coming from the back and side of the lens, which can represent up to 50% of damaging UV light. The Essilor innovation involves a new anti-reflec-tive coating on the backside of the lens – called the Broad Spectrum Technology-, which virtually eliminates UV light reflection into the eyes while maintaining the premium transparency of the lens. The launch of the new Crizal UV constitutes a breakthrough which has the potential to make an impact on the lives of individuals of all ages with all types of vision needs, all year long.

Introducing the Eye-Sun Protection Factor to drive

consumer awarenessA recent consumer survey* in Europe showed that more than two thirds of consumers were unaware that clear lenses offered any protection against UV and over 90% recognised the utility of a UV pro-tection index for eyewear.

To increase consumer awareness about efficient types of UV protection for eyes, Essilor has devel-oped an Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) rating system, inspired by the systems used to rate skin-care and sunscreen products efficiency. This evalu-ation system provides an objective laboratory index for eyewear, certifying the global UV protection of a lens. It will help consumers understand the level of UV protection provided by their eyewear. Values vary from 2 to a maximum of 25 for clear lenses and “50+” for tinted as well as polarized sun lenses. With an E-SPF of 25**, Crizal UV lenses are the only ones to reach the best level of protec-tion in the clear lens category and outperform other lenses on the marketplace.Developed and studied in collaboration with inde-pendent third parties, the E-SPF protocol and values have been endorsed by Dr. Karl Citek, American Professor of Optometry, OD, PhD, FAAO, and one of the first researchers to have established the hazard linked to UV backside reflection.Essilor is convinced that this unique evaluation system, along with Crizal UV, will improve con-sumer knowledge about visual health protection from the invisible and often irreversible dangers of UV light. For more information or to book an appoint-ment please call Wendy on 028 71882506 or call to our practice at 20 Castle Street Strabane.

Factory labelled a ‘safety hazard’

There are calls for a disused factory in Victoria Bridge to be made more secure, with fears growing that it is becoming increasingly dangerous.

By Kevin McAnena

Local residents have raised concerns over the state of the old Nestle factory in the village, which has become run down. Some residents brought their worries to West Tyrone MLA Joe Byrne, who has visited the site. He’s added his voice to those calling for action to be taken by the owners of the building and Stra-bane District Council.“I visited the factory site and I am alarmed at the

current state of dilapidation of the old factory,” he said.“In my opinion it is a health and safety hazard given that the gates are wide open. This is a public danger to children and others who may enter the site. The factory has obviously had people enter it to remove cabling and manhole covers and con-sequently there are large, uncovered holes in the ground leading to drains and the like.”He added: “Meanwhile, the principal buildings themselves are in an advanced state of dilapida-tion. Despite this, however, any member of the public is free to walk onto the site without having to cross any fencing or other forms of security and it is only a matter of time before injury is caused.”Mr Byrne also said the protection of all local resi-dents must be of paramount importance in this case.

This photos shows the present state of the site and inset residents showed their concerns to MLA Joe Byrne who visited the site to see for himself.

B. McNamee have been awarded the ‘Best Family Builders Merchant in Northern Ireland’ for the second year in a row!The business, which is based in Strabane and Newtownstewart, has once again been recognised by the prestigious Octabuild Builders Merchant Awards Scheme.Managing Director Edmund McNamee explained: “They’ve acknowledged B. McNamee’s as being the best builders merchant in county Tyrone, and also awarded it the best family run builders merchants in Northern Ireland. We are extremely proud to have won this award for the second year in a row.”

“It gives us great satisfaction to be acknowledged by the industry in such a way. It’s a nice boost, we’re obviously doing something right, and it’s acknowledgement to the staff that their work has

been recognised in the wider field.”Employing a total of 24 people, the business has found itself having to adapt to meet the demands of a weak economy, particularly in an industry that has suffered more than most. They’ve met this challenge admirably though, and this new award is testament to this.Edmund said: “We’re finding that the amount of work out there just isn’t what it used to be. We’re just having to cut our costs to suit, and we’re having to come up with new lines and new ways of servicing the community, it’s keeping us on our toes.”B. McNamee’s hope to build on this success and hope the benchmark has now been set, and the standards will continue to be high: “We have kept up our high standards by winning this award for the second time and we hope to keep achieving more.”

The ‘Off The Streets’ programme has been running in Sion for the last six weeks, and involved local teenagers aged between 14 and 16 engaging in dif-ferent schemes.Backed by the PSNI, District Policing Partnership (DPP), the Community Safety Partnership and Sion Mills Community Forum, the programme saw the teenagers take part in wall cage soccer, wall climbing, laser quest, and girls also partici-pated in a make-up course.

Monday night saw the core group of teenagers involved getting recognised. Andy Patton is from the Sion Mills Community Forum, he said it’s been a worthwhile scheme: “The idea behind it is self explanatory. It’s to get young people off the streets to do something structured, get them involved in different courses or whatever. It’s good for the young people and these organisations obviously see the value in what we’re doing.”He added: “The make up was supplied by the PSNI for the girls, and the DPP supplied the hoodies with the Sion Mills Community forum motif on it and the Off The Streets logo on the back.”Representatives from the PSNI and DPP were in attendance to present hoodies and certificates, while Community Safety Officer Ryan Tracey was also there to give a talk on the programme and commend the teenagers for taking part and stick-ing with it.

‘The Old Farming Ways DVD Goes On Sale’The Old Farming Ways was an idea that generated from Mr. Gerard Grieve of Tievebrack, Castlefin back at the beginning of 2011 and over the past year Mr. Grieve along with his family have planned and organised a series of unique charity events centring on old farming techniques that were used many years ago.The purpose of, ‘The Old Farming Ways’, was to raise as much money as possible for the Ronald Mc Donald House, Crumlin and also for St. Vincent De Paul, Castlefin. When Mr. Grieve’s grandson, Matthew, became unwell back in December 2006, the family learned of the importance and significance of the Ronald Mc Donald House, Crumlin and it is a place close to their hearts after Matthew had to stay in Hospi-tal for long periods of time. St. Vincent De Paul, Castlefin have continued to show support to the Grieve family throughout Matthew’s long term illness. The first event of The Old Farming Ways hap-pened back on St. Patrick’s Day 2011 when the field that The Grieve family donated to the charity was ploughed by horses, vintage tractors and more modern methods. Following on from this on the 4th April 2011 the field was then sowed. On the 4th September the corn was cut, stoked, lumped, stacked and thatched.

The final stage of, The Old Farming Ways, was held on 5th November 2011 when the Grieve family held a Family Fun Day on their land. Over the next few months, local videographer Gerard Mc Girr and his team Kerry, Shay andGeoffrey who filmed every stage of, The Old Farming Ways, from beginning to end, developed the footage into a DVD. On 23rd March 2012 the Old Farming Ways DVD

was launched and is now on sale in St. Vincent De Paul Shop Caslefin, Mc Granaghans Shop Castle-fin or email [email protected] final event for The Old Farming Ways will be held on Friday 4th May at Mc Bride’s Bar, Castlefin. The night will consist of a presentation of cheques to Ronald Mc Donald House and St. Vincent De Paul with live music and dancing. The Grieve Family would like to encourage everyone to come along for a promised enjoyable night. The Grieve family would like to take this opportu-nity to thank every single person who has helped and contributed to making The Old Farming Ways happen over the past year.

DVD Launch: Gerard Grieve, Martin from TCR, Sam Gallagher (SVDP) & Thomas Mc Kelvey (Vinage Club).

The New Captains Drive in 2012

THE family of a local Strabane man, Simon Glenn who was tragically killed by a drunk driver last year have been overwhelmed by the response they have been given by the community follow-ing their petition to have the man who claimed his life sentence increase.Nineteen year old Conor Breen, from Eskra was two and a half times over the legal drink-drive limit when he crashed into the car driven by Simon (26) outside Omagh last April. Mr Breen was jailed for three years for causing death by dangerous driving in court last month. Martina Glenn, Simon’s mother, who was also injured during the crash, was appalled by the leni-ency of the sentencing decided to appeal the deci-sion- with the Strabane community giving her their full support.Since the court hearing, a door-to-door petition is underway and a facebook page urging for people to sign the petition has already had 1,600 signatures with the aim of adding more. Simon’s aunt, Ann Jef-

ferson who founded the page said: “We are planning to take the petition to Stormont; I am in contact with a few MLAs who are giving us their full support on this. If this does not change the sentence that was given to Conor Breen, we hope that it will change the sentencing process for drunk drivers, this was an injustice for us.”Speaking about the loss of Simon from their lives, Ann said: “Simon is missed so much by all of us. What we witness Martina go through every day is heart-breaking, there is nothing we can do but be there for her, Samantha Lili and Karen. They have had there hearts ripped from them and my mum is so broken-hearted. The last time she spoke to Simon he told her that he would have her sitting at the top of the table when he and Karen got married, with a big hat on. Simon was and still is one in a million and will never be forgotten. I will do my best along with the rest of the family to succeed in this. For Martina her life too ended the day Simon died.”The support for the Glenn family is undeniable, one comment on the Facebook site reads: “Signed for Justice.”

£16m Investment to help Rural Life

PLANS were announced last week for a £16million invest-ment from the Department for Rural Development to help develop quality of life in rural areas and increase the level of economic activity.

By Megan Conroy

The programme was announced by Agriculture minister Michelle O’Neill at a stakeholder meeting held in Stor-mont last week, where representatives from local coun-cils, rural development groups and other rural partnership organisations, voiced their opinions and recommendationsSinn Fein West Tyrone MLA, and member of the Assembly’s Rural Development Committee, Michaela Boyle said, “The ‘Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation’ framework and associated action plan will help target the causes of social iso-lation and help those in poverty in rural areas throughout the North. This is recognised as a priority area in the recently pub-lished draft Programme for Government and the framework also has a direct link to the Rural White Paper Action Plan.” “The framework will help support a range of activities that will make a difference, most in collaboration with other stakeholders. These will include: improving access to trans-port; maximising access to grants, benefi ts and services; the rural support charity; rural community development; fuel poverty schemes; a Health Checks programme; a Rural Youth Employability Programme; a Rural Young Entre-preneurs Programme; a services for older people project; a borewell requisition project; and a small grants programme.“It is through these many interventions that our rural areas can continue to be sustainable. They will also help support the most vulnerable who are often forgot about but can make an enormous contribution to society.”

An Icon Will Live OnLast month saw the passing of one of the real musical talents left in today’s music industry. The stunning Whitney Hou-ston sadly died in a hotel in Los Angeles on 12th February, sending shockwaves across the world. I was on my way home from a night out when I heard the news; my initial reaction was that it was another rumour circling through the internet. I was sadly mistaken when the news appeared on TV; my fi rst thought was what a waste.Growing up during the nineties, Whitney Houston’s music was played constantly in our house; my mum was also a big fan and bought her greatest hits album to listen to while she did the housework. Her soulful voice would send shivers down my spine, especially the Greatest Love of All, what a song. Her fi rst acting role in The Bodyguard saw her fame reach new heights as it strengthened people’s beliefs that Whitney was special and a woman with exceptional ability. Her death is not only a shocking waste of pure talent but a heart-breaking loss of someone who once had the world at her feet. Her suc-cess was not only on a magnitude of it’s own but it also appears to have been her downfall.

The tributes that poured in from fellow celeb-rities on the wake of her death, only defi nes that she was not only loved but had also been forgiven for her past misdemeanours.

It was not a secret that Whitney had battled addiction, her problem with drugs seen her take a backseat in the music industry with her comeback in 2009 resulting in specula-tion that she had not yet defeated her demons. The star once said in an interview with Diane Sawyer that she was her own worst enemy and blamed nobody for her life spiralling out of control, her family did not agree, her hus-band was the source.Within a year the music industry has been hit with fatal blows after another music icon, Amy Winehouse, died in similar circum-stances after her fi ght with addiction seen her hit rock bottom at a very young age. The passing of these legends can make you question if a life surrounded by fame and for-tune is worth the luxurious benefi ts that come hand in hand with success? Both women died just before they were due to make long-awaited comebacks and therefore it can be argued that the stress of ensuring you perfect every detail of your life, without failing could have been too much for their already weak-ened bodies to handle. It can not be denied that Whitney’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her fans, and that no matter why or how she died her death was a tragedy and she will only be remembered for her contribution to music and not her per-sonal battles.

Whitney Houston was always honest and frank about how she lived her life.

MOVIE REVIEW by Megan Conroy

21 Jump Street Rated:15A

Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) star in this hilarious revival of 1980s cop series as two previous high school ene-mies turned police partners who are assigned an unlikely job- trad-ing in their badges for backpacks they go back to school undercover aiming to bust a drugs ring.Although the plot is similar to many high school comedies like Never Been Kissed, this film takes an alternative route, demon-strating the changing positions in school hierarchy. Geeks are no longer shunned and jocks are not the only boys receiving some female attention. The new system comes as a shock to Jenko as he realises his previous glory days are a definite thing of the past, the culprit for this drastic change- the Glee phe-nomenon has taken over. Enjoying his new

found fame Schmidt now has all the upper hand and is no longer intimidated by Jenko. Moving in with Schmidt and his parents sets the perfect backdrop for the comedic duo, sparking some hilarious one-liners. For fans of Channing Tatum, hoping to catch a glimpse of him topless you will sadly disap-pointed as the Hollywood hunk remains fully clothed throughout, however the police uni-form is a worthy alternative. The role for Tatum is a first as it sees him adjust perfectly from a broody character to a comedic hero, with Hill the combination works together like Tom and Jerry. With cameos from Johnny Depp and Ice Cube the film has a star-studded cast that makes this comedy a must-see. The film itself has been a smash at the box office and I am sure that it will not be the last of this pair. Taking old cliques and tearing them apart is the best way to describe this film.

It ListTime to tan!The clocks have changed, mark-ing the start of the Spring, brighter mornings and longer balmy eve-nings. A dash of fake tan can reju-venate tired skin by helping it appear softer, smoother and pol-ished, making it an instant solu-tion to boosting body confi dence. The real question many women have is which is the right tan for me?Well this is the ultimate guide on all tanning options. Firstly girls, you must ask if you are looking for a tan which washes off or a devel-oping tan which will last 3 days. Then decide on which formula you like - gels, mousse, spray, tinted or untinted? Whatever your preference, follow my tan commandments and you will not go wrong –1. Always, Always exfoliate and moisturise the skin before you apply tan. Skin that is properly prepped, tan will appear much more even.2. If you are applying self-tanning to your face, remember to cleanse face properly and brush your teeth as water and toothpaste will ruin all your hard work.3. Never wax or shave straight before tanning as colour will sit in open pores making the end result looking dotty and horrible.4. Apply nail varnish before tanning as it will protect your nails from staining.5. Apply moisturiser around your hairline, eye-brows, elbows, knees and feet. This will act as a barrier preventing patchiness and staining.6. A good quality tanning mitt will help stroke colour much more evenly onto your skin. Try Vita Liberata or St.Tropez.7. Go carefully around your face and not forget-ting the back of your neck, then continue to apply

everywhere except the backs of your hands.8. Remove the mitt and apply moisturiser to the back of that hand, using the other mitt, stroke your hand to blend what colour is left on the mitt with the moisturiser. Repeat on the other hand.9. It’s time to relax and let the tan do its job, where loose fi tting clothes and refrain from vig-orous exercise to ensure perfection.10. Top up and enrich your tan with a tan extender which works to prolong and enhance your tan leaving you with golden glowing skin.

Traditionally, Irish girls are pale and pasty but not anymore, with the help of a collection of tans designed and produced here in Ireland –We love Irish brand Karora which delivers the promise of improving skin appearance, fl awless colour and long lasting results. All six prod-ucts in the range incorporate a pure natural and organic profi le. The collection offers instant and self-tanning options with superb coverage hiding imperfections including veins and blemishes, great for legs and delivers a fantastic result.Tan Organic shot to fame after its appearance on the Irish Dragon’s Den and rightly so. Tan Organic is the only genuine organic tanning solution on the market with 95% certifi ed organic tanning ingredients. No synthetic colours, no synthetic preservatives and no parabens but still delivering a great tan and fab colour. The award winning, He-Shi a favourite tanning range amongst many of our team at Mc Elhin-

neys, quick and easy to apply this tanning range drying in as little as 5 minutes so you can dress immediately. Tanning upon contact so you can see how it is going onto the skin, the results are no streaking and no white bits! This is a unisex tanning products specially formulated to be easily applied to all skin types and deliver a natu-ral looking colour; He-Shi is the perfect product for the modern man with the Express Liquid Tan being ideal for applying over body hair due to its thin texture.Irish owned Vita Liberata tans are all packed with natural extracts such as ylang ylang, seaweed, pomegranate and grape, which means no nasty biscuit smell and therefore guarantees a pleasant tanning experience! The tans now also include the nourishing moisture complex Pentavitin to ensure an easy, streak free application and a natural fade. If it’s good enough for the guys on X-Factor, it is defi nitely worth a try this spring.Getting rave reviews is Rockstar Tan another Irish

owned company, loved by top beauty editors and press alike for its organic and natural ingredients, realistic colour and long lasting results. The tan adjusts according to your natural skin tone and is suitable for both face and body. The iconic world leader in sunless tanning has to be St. Tropez. MAUREEN NOLAN STARS IN ‘BLOOD BROTHERS’

AT THE FORUMThe countdown is on at the Millen-nium Forum for the return of one of the best loved musicals of all time, BLOOD BROTHERS, on Monday 16th April for a week-long run.

Bill Kenwright presents Willy Russell’s capti-vating and moving tale of twins who, sepa-rated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful con-sequences.

The superb score includes ‘Bright New Day’, ‘Marilyn Monroe’ and the emotionally charged hit ‘Tell Me It’s Not True’ as Maureen Nolan, of the world-renowned pop group THE NOLAN SISTERS reprises her role as the tragic Mrs Johnstone.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning BLOOD BROTHERS, and Bill Kenwright’s produc-tion, having recently celebrated its 23rd phe-nomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating per-formance.

The dress was started by col-lecting a range of various items from the local refuse centre; some of these items included plastic bags, ink cartridge packaging, circuit boards and other old elec-trical waste. The dress originally started with a charity shop dress that was altered and added to, to create the fi nal masterpiece.Originally Carla heard about the competition from her art teacher and thought it was a great idea to create something for her A-Level piece as well as the competition. She then researched the competi-tion and thought that it would be a great experience and so decided she would enter via the Northern region. The model, Aoife Blacklaws was chosen as she was a friend of Car-la’s and one whom Carla thought would suit the role and presents the dress well.On the day there was an excited atmosphere amongst all 73 con-

testants. The backstage atmos-phere proved nerve wrecking however once the model was dressed and ready the nerves set-tled down before she took to the catwalk.Once on the Catwalk the model stated that “coming down the cat-walk was an amazing and thrilling experience and the nerves lifted quickly once I stepped out onto the catwalk.”All the designs on the night were fabulous, but we proved to stand out from the 72 other contest-ants as we made it into the top 15 and will be heading to Dublin for the Grand fi nal on Friday the 20th April. The fi nal will be both excit-ing and terrifying as we intend to step up to the mark to create a show that will leave the audience speechlessThe designer of the dress, Carla, hopes to go to London to St. Martin’s Central to study fashion design and to further her knowl-

A charity cycle will take place later this month to raise much needed funds for a local school which caters for children with special needs.

By Kevin McAnena

The event, due to take place on Sunday 22nd April, is part of the Knockavoe Needs You campaign - a drive to raise £100,000 for the school. The Knockavoe Cycle Challenge is the latest in a range of events, with several more scheduled to take place next month including a special gala dinner at the Fir Trees Hotel, and a Take Me Out night. The cycle is being run in conjunction with Strabane & Lif-ford Cycle Club, and participants can test themselves at three levels – a 20mile, 30 mile or 45 mile cycle. The course will start and end at the Fir Trees Hotel in StrabaneCharlotte Caldwell is one of those behind the fundraising drive, as her son Billy attends the school – she said it’s been hit by government cutbacks: “Most of these children need 24 hour care and supervision, and they can’t talk for them-selves but they deserve a better quality of life. The bus used to take the children on their schools outings is being cut, and these trips to the garden centre, or wherever, are the high-lights of their weeks. It’s a very worthwhile cause.”The team also plan to build a special therapy pool and an intense therapy centre with the money, if enough is raised.Registration for the Knockavoe Cycle Challenge takes place at 9am on the 22nd April, and will cost £15. HC - ‘The Life Album’

Picnic’s got the cure for the Summer time bluesLast month we looked at some of the big live draws in Ireland this summer, while also stating that news on this year’s Elec-tric Picnic festival would be forthcoming.Well we didn’t have to wait too long: two days in fact and the fi rst batch of the line-up was announced. As ever the festival takes place at its regular stomping ground in the middle of Stradbally, County Laois from Friday, August 31 to Sunday, September 2.

The rumours of The Cure appear-ing, which we touched on last month, have proven to be on the

money, with the mascara smudged legend that is Robert Smith return-ing to Ireland for what will be the fi rst Irish appearance by The Cure since Oxegen 2004.Joining The Cure for the weekend are: Sigur Ros; Elbow; Ed Sheeran; Grizzly Bear; Orbital; Christy Moore; The Roots; Glen Hansard; The xx; Metronomy; The Horrors; Azealia Banks; Roots Manuva; Bell X1; John Digweed; Staff Benda Bilili; Milagers; Alabama Shake; Cranes; Little Roy; Hot Chip; Land

Lovers; Baxter Dury; Jonathan Wilson; Solar Bears; Fatoumata Diawara; Willis Earl Beal; Lanterns on the Lake; The Killers; Bat For Lashes and Tindersticks.Naturally, there are more than a few names to be added to the line-up over the next few weeks, which is just as well because the list is still far from drool-worthy. There were concerns, also, from some festi-val regulars that the eclectic spirit of Electric Picnic, which attracts mainly a 25-plus audience, may be

diluted this year given that Oxegen, which attracts a mainly teenage to early twenties audience, has been cancelled. The additions of acts like Ed Sheeran and The Killers have been seen, by some, as an olive branch to the homeless Oxegen campers. But with Weekend tickets priced at €230 and Sunday day tick-ets at €99.50 (both with all those lovely Ticketmaster extras) it’s hard to envisage someone forking out that kind of money for just a hand-ful of acts, so the pipe and slippers brigade can sleep soundly in their campervans. So who else will be added to the list? Well one can only speculate but the Radiohead rumours won’t go away and the line-up is still lacking the obligatory eighties synth-band and reformed New Wave act. A few more Irish acts, particularly some of the amazing acts from the north, wouldn’t go a miss either. Derry’s Wonder Villains (who have just returned from their fi rst US shows at South-by-Southwest in Austin, Texas)? Lifford’s Rainy Boy Sleep? Belfast’s And So I Watch You From Afar? Derry’s Japanese Popstars? Sure why not?

Strabane singer - songwriter Pete O’Hanlon has been very busy of late. Having recently released his latest album ‘Simple Equation’, which the ‘Herald cannot recommend enough, O’Hanlon has now launched his new offi -cial website (www.peterohanlon.com), where all who appreciate the Strabane man’s fi ne talents can keep up to date with all his latest news and gigs, with the addition of a fi ne gallery of pictures past and present. The new album has gar-nered acclaim across the board. American singer, songwriter and poet RB Morris said of the album: “Just like O’Hanlon’s ‘Trick of Time’ (record), I think it will be seen as one of the great documents of Irish songwriters/musicians. It has more dimensions, more sheer talent rendered, than anything new I can point to by any current artist, especially in the whole Americana swath, which of course all your jades like to p*** on, but which of course has more rel-evancy than all the stuff that makes them stand up and salute.”O’Hanlon will begin the launch of the new album with a performance at Sandinos in Derry on Thurs-day, April 12. He will also be joined on stage by the Bluebells. It promises to be a very special night. The album is currently available in Cool Discs on Foyle Street. The new album is also available to purchase on the www.peterohanlon.com website via PayPal. Get hold of the album and get down to Sandinos on April 12. You’ll not regret it. Admis-sion for the Sandinos gig is £5 and it all kicks off at 10pm.

For Pete O’Hanlon

Strabane’s Pete O’Hanlon

Blessed are the BigmouthsWhile recently browsing through the music magazine section at a store, I decided to take a step back and observe the front covers. With-out naming the eight magazines in question, the cover stars were Bruce Springsteen, Paul Weller, Van Halen, John Lydon, Noel Gal-lagher, Morrissey, David Bowie and Kiss. All eight names are entertaining and blessed with a fi ne blend of wisdom, wit and con-troversy; however there is a problem here. With the exception of Noel Gallagher, who is in his mid-forties, everyone else on the list is over fi fty.It made me wonder where the young cover stars of today are. Are they simply being pushed aside by sycophantic journalists content to stick to the ‘old boys club’? If this was the case it would be easier to understand but it isn’t that simple. When all of the above were in their twenties they were still making the cover of the monthly and weekly magazines, spouting humorous, passionate and venomous gold from beginning to end. I recently brought this issue up to a music journal-ist, who contributes to a number of magazines. He

told me that interviewing contemporary musicians was like trying to get blood from a stone. He basi-cally implied that the new crop of rock stars and pop stars are boring, vacuous and have absolutely nothing to say and simply want the fame with-out having to bother with what it takes to actu-ally generate it. None of this naturally makes for a good magazine if such people are to be slapped on the cover. So what happens when the old guard are gone? Will the music magazine disappear too? The Internet has made life increasingly diffi cult for the monthlies and the weeklies. But as the music press continues to shift to an online existence it still requires content. Can the younger generation of musicians deliver it? Monosyllabic, scruffy, fi dgeting bores certainly will not quench the appetite of those spoiled on the glorious copy delivered by all who populated the covers of the NME, Sounds, Melody Maker, Vox, Select and

Metal Hammer down through the years. But then again, maybe they’re not supposed to. Perhaps the problem lies in what people want from their pop stars and rock stars in 2012. Aloof-ness, arrogance, self-confi dence and having an opinion are now all deemed as negative qualities. People dislike individuals who exude any of these traits, which is a shame. These qualities seeped into the very music and public persona of people like Bowie, The Stones, The Pistols, The Clash, The Smiths and even Oasis but now it seems that no-one wants such colourfulness and outland-ishness from pop stars. Could it be that when a young audience is repeatedly fed an onslaught of conservative Stepford careerist clones they’ll eventually become conditioned into assuming that anything else has no place in popular music?

The music business has been turned upside down over the past ten years and the suits are absolutely terrifi ed to make a false move as it could be the

Ed Sheerin

move that sinks them. It makes from an extremely safe environment where anyone with any sense of danger about them simply does not get in the door. Controversy today is drug-related and that should never be championed or glamorised - it has left too many in the cemetery. And too many morons still buy into the ‘TV out the window’ nonsense of the sixties and seventies. The real drama lies, just like it always has, in the outsider, the uninvited guest, the fl y in the ointment, but such fi gures are an endangered species in the world of pop these days. The last genuine group of gate-crashers were the Gallagher brothers in the mid-nineties. With a guitar, a bag of cans and a heel of a loaf, they were rough diamond outsiders, who then reported back to us on how the other half lived until, naturally, they became part of the other half; it was fun while it lasted though.

There are always outsiders fl oating around and they are capable of shaking things up again. They just need an audience willing to welcome a whiff of the unpredictable. So do not dismiss the daydreamer, the arrogant git who’s up his or her own backside, the aloof strange lad or girl in your class with funny hair and funnier dress sense. These individuals are needed now more than ever because we can’t depend on the same old hags forever. As the late Joe Strummer once said: “the future is unwritten.” Let’s just hope it’s worth reading.

Strabane District Council in asso-ciation with the Strabane District Sports Forum this week launches the ‘People First’ Sports Awards for 2011 to recognise the efforts of the volunteers in our district who have made an outstanding contribution to Sport. The Strabane Sports Forum has selected ten differ-ent award categories, which they feel will encom-pass all areas of the voluntary endeavour. Council Chairperson Brian Mc Mahon said, “As well as highlighting the tremendous achievements gained, we also wish to recognise the unsung heroes of the community and sport sectors, those volunteers who give countless unpaid hours for the good of others.” This year the Sports Forum have included ten cat-egories, which they feel, will help capture other great achievement from within the District. The categories for nominations are:

• Sports Person of the Year with a Disability• Club of the Year• Hall of fame• Special Award

Chairman of Strabane Sports Forum, Aodhan Harkin commented “Amongst those new award categories we have selected a ‘Hall of Fame’, which looks to recognise the achievements of past greats, who achieved success in their sport before the Sports Forum launched its awards scheme back in 2004”.Strabane District Council invites nominations from organisations, community groups, sports clubs, schools, youth clubs and individuals, for the ten categories of awards. The Mothers ArmsLittle John Nee – the man behind Rural Electric and Dead Rooster Blues – returns with another incredible show full of music, hilarity and enter-tainment.Welcome to The Mothers Arms Sing-ing Lounge! Up in the hills in the middle of nowhere...a dilapidated two storey building surrounded by tumbling sheds; dry stone, rusty tin, rotting timber and tar-paper, the yard surrendered to weeds... a quiet place where lonely farmers and weary travellers are drawn to while away the empty hours. It’s been a long time since there was any singing. The previous proprietor has been sent to prison. His daughter has returned from Louisiana to run the place as the banks circle like vultures. On a beautiful summers’ morning a vintage automobile struggles up the hill. Inside are a quartet of musi-cians who call themselves ‘The Highly Strung Orchestra’. You just know that when they enter The Mothers Arms things will never be the same again...This new show, a mixture of music and storytell-ing by Little John Nee, is a comic, musical helter- skelter ride through a surreal but frighteningly believable rural gothic landscape.Suitable ages 14+

A national charity is calling on people in the Strabane district to put their feet first for diabetes, and take part in their Walk in the Park next month.

By Kevin McAnena

The event is one of 13 walking events taking place across Northern Ireland to raise funds for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland. The Strabane walk is two miles long so the entire family can take part and the route is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs with dogs allowed on leads. Everyone who com-pletes the route will receive a medal.Latest figures indicate 1880 people in the Strabane District Council area are diagnosed with diabe-tes. Overall in Northern Ireland, there are 73,500 people diagnosed with the condition, 1000 of

which are young people and children.Naomi Brown, Fundraising Assistant for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland said: “Earlier this year we launched our Putting Feet First Campaign which highlighted the number of preventable diabetes-related amputations here. We’re determined to change this but we rely heavily on people to raise vital funds to allow us to continue our activities.”She added: “This summer we are asking people to put their feet first, enjoy a family walk in the sun-shine and help those who are living with this con-dition. Living a healthy lifestyle is also important for good diabetes control and walking is a great way to become more active and help to prevent Type 2 diabetes. I would urge anyone who is avail-able on the day to come and join us.”The walk will start at Asda car park on Monday 14th May at 7.00pm, and to register for the walk and to receive a sponsorship form, please contact Naomi Brown on 028 9066 6646 or email [email protected]

IN a year that celebrates the Queen’s 50 year reign, the Olympic Games coming to London and the superstition that the world will come to a bitter end, 2012 also marks the 100 year anniver-sary of the sunken maiden voyage RMS Titanic.

By Megan Conroy

The tale of the tragic White Star liner that sank on April 15 1912 has sparked fascination across the globe for a century due to the momentous loss of 1,522 lives on that ill-fateful morning. The ship was the world’s largest passenger liner when it sailed from Southampton. Striking an iceberg four days into the voyage in the icy Atlantic waters brought the world to a standstill. Almost 3 hours after the fatal blow from the gla-cier, the ship made its way to the bottom of the ocean. The maritime disaster may have occurred 100 years ago with the story depicted on-screen many times but this year historians across Ire-land and the rest of the world are undeterred in their campaign to highlight the importance of the sunken ship in history. RMS Titanic was built in Belfast and was homed there from 1911 until it made its first and last voyage in 1912. Although the ship was described as ‘unsinkable’, Belfast city council have used this fact to their advantage with the completion of the Titanic Quarter, with an estimated £9 Bil-lion investment in the site. Some critics have blasted the building of the quarter, with one on-line blogger questioning: “Why people take pride in claiming the ship was built in Belfast, I will never understand? Celebrating the loss of so many lives is shameful. It should be mourned not celebrated. Wasting that amount of money

on that hideous site is ludicrous, especially in a recession.”The story of the Titanic was firstly told to a stunned public in 1997 in James Cameron’s blockbuster Movie.

To mark the anniversary Cameron decided to capture audiences once again by releasing the film in 3D, which hit the cinema last week. Denying that he was using the date to add to his multi-million dollar fortune Mr Cameron said at the premiere: “I was fascinated by the story, the history, the people that were heroic, the people that lost their lives; I was genuinely touched by the tragedy when I was there at the wreck. I think the film is a good focusing agent for that at this time when we should be remembering the wreck and its message, the disaster and it’s a message for all of us.” Fan of the film, Laura Conwell said: “I have always been interested in the history of the Titanic, it would be unfair to the victims if they where not remembered, I loved the film the first time around and can not wait to see it in 3D.”Belfast’s most famous creation will be celebrated in an extended festival running up to April 22, details of events are available from the Belfast City Council website.

Employability Department

At Holy Cross College, Enterprise and Entrepre-neurship is a pivotal theme within our comprehen-sive and robust Employability programme for all Key Stage 3 and 4 students. The Employability Department works very closely with the Busi-ness Studies and Careers Departments in school to develop ‘enterprise’ in its broadest sense, sup-ported by Young Enterprise and the Careers Service NI, who both play a signifi cant role in this quest. Together, we aim to develop young people with a ‘can do’ attitude who inherently think in terms of customer service; can work effectively with col-leagues; are creative in solving work-based prob-lems; and who may consider self-employment as a viable career option one day but who will ultimately prove an asset to any prospective employer. To this end, the Department plans to introduce new Key Stage 4 employability qualifi cations to com-plement the academic capability of our students and to enhance and verify their employability skills, particularly in terms of their contribution to the local economy as part-time employees and trainees in local business organisations. We are always interested in developing our links with the business community and would welcome the assistance of any local businesses who feel they can contribute in any way to the development of enterprise and employability skills within our school community. Mrs Marita McCullagh, Head of Subject - Employability

Young Enterprise: Learning by Doing

The Young Enterprise Learn to Earn Programme:

• Provides students with an opportunity to explore and identify their aptitudes, abilities, and the things they enjoy doing, and to begin to match these with future careers• Raises students’ economic awareness of the link between what they do at school and their future life prospects• Raises students’ aspirations of what they might achieve in the future, and encourages them to make plans for future success.

The programme helps students to gain:

• Social skills — raising motivation, participation in schooling and employability skills• An opportunity to begin planning for their ideal lifestyle and future career options• An understanding of the type of skills, knowledge and experience required to meet their future goals• ‘Hands-on’ experience — ‘learning by doing’ through completing a range of activities• An understanding of their own defi nition of suc-cess and how to achieve it.

Skype meeting A group of Year 11 Business & Communication Systems and Year 13 Business Studies pupils took part in a Skype meeting on Wednesday, February 29 with three US business partners from a business called Casart Coverings (Virginia, USA), as part of the “Export Clever Programme”. The Skype meeting was held in Strabane District Council Offi ces. The pupils introduced themselves to the US business partners (Casart Coverings) and vice versa, before starting work on a research project for them. These Holy Cross College pupils will be working along with Year 11 Business Studies pupils from Strabane Academy to complete the research. The business partners want the pupils to look into the Marketing Mix the business would have to use if it was to enter the UK market. The BBC was greatly interested in the idea of two schools, from different parts of the political divide, working together on a project. The Skype meet-ing was recorded, pupils were interviewed and the enterprise was aired on the BBC’s “Hearts and Minds” programme.

Hurricane Irene ‘Blown Away’ by Allstate Strabane Allstate Strabane was at the forefront of supporting those affected by Hurricane Irene in August 2011. 21 Allstate staff pledged their time to take telephone calls from Allstate customers impacted by the weather phenomenon. The dangerous and powerful Hurricane Irene posed an extreme threat to homes and businesses from North Carolina and Mid-Atlantic to the Northeast and New England.

Martina McNulty was the first Allstater to take a call from a New Yorker with a damaged roof. Martina commented: ‘It is a new experience and you can only feel empathy for those who are losing their home in such circumstances, we are only glad to help.’

With winds of up to 80mph, power was lost in almost 2 million homes on the American East Coast, with the major New York airports closed over the weekend. The Orchard Road site continued to support this effort during the aftermath as the US started its clean up operation.

NATIONAL TRAINING AWARD

Charles O'Doherty & Sons Ltd is the first coffin manufacturer in UK / Ireland to have achieved the National Training Award.

The National Training Awards (NTA) are the UK's premier accolade fororganisa-tions and individuals that have achieved lasting excellence through training.

NTA winners are exemplars of training and development in the UK; they are committed to exceptional training that has real benefits for the business, the community and the individual.

O’Doherty & Sons, manufacture of quality coffi ns and caskets, is an independent family business tracing its history over three gen-erations has been in existence for over a century and the legacy is being carried on.Charles O’Doherty, grandfather of the present owners, brothers Charles and Manus, was a leading manufacturer in the coach and trap making industry in the early twentieth century. A native of the town land of Ballyargas, Redcastle, County Donegal, young Charles served his time as an apprentice trap maker in Butlers Carndonagh before moving to O’Connors in the town of Strabane.

Around this time he met and fell in love with a lady called Margaret Woods. Charles was keen to marry but she insisted there would be no wedding until he had his own business!

CoachbuildersSo in 1908 O’Doherty’s Coachbuilders was in business and the order book was bursting at the seams. Margaret kept her promise and in 1910 the couple married. As the factory’s reputation grew offers began to come in form some of the UK’s most prestigious companies. In 1928

the company manufactured the fi rst ever diesel car in Europe to run to a timetable. Commissioned by the Great Northern Rail-way the wagon was employed for many years to ferry goods throughout Donegal. With the arrival of the combustion engine the fi rm grew from strength to strength and soon Alfi e and Manus (two of six sons) joined their father Charles in the business. In 1954 the company was commissioned to build the fi rst ever mobile dental unit, which was offi cially handed over to the then Health Minister, Tom O’Higgins, on 21st September. On its success, fl eets of transport were custom built to order.

The coachworks and the coffi n manu-facturing business complimented each other greatly until the 1980’s when new leg-islation put pay to the former that had been the O’Doherty’s main source of income for decades. However, with life’s certainty being death there was hope that there would always be a need for coffi ns, so expansion in this area was inevitable. In 1977, Manus O’Doherty Jnr. joined his father. New man-agement was formed

in 1990 with the addition of Manus’ brother Charles, who formerly worked with Coates Viyella.Charles and Manus soon realised that a more strategic approach to the develop-

ment of the company was the only way forward. Marketing awareness, competi-

tiveness, fl exibility, knowledgeable, skilled and adaptable workforce, were key areas in planning for the company’s future suc-cess.Nowadays, a far cry from the days of

hammers and nails, the company utilises high tech computerised equipment supplying an ever increasing range of high quality funeral products across the UK and Ireland.A short time ago in 2000 the com-pany was a proud recipient of the Investor in People award and the following year was awarded the prestigious National Training Award.Today the company is continuing to grow from strength to strength concentrating on servicing new and existing customers within the UK and Ireland, investing in state of the art machinery and ensuring

all our staff training is of the highest cali-bre.

The programme has been funded by Strabane District Council’s Economic Devel-opment Department. It engaged and involved pupils and teachers from the secondary schools in Strabane, namely Holycross, Strabane Gram-mar School and Strabane High School (and most recently the Strabane Acad-emy in 2012). The schools agreed to work on a single joint project for their business studies class. They jointly chose to research a business called ‘Around the Table Games’ from St. Louis, Missouri and help prepare it for launching in the UK market.Ms. Kamala Lakhdhir, the

A delega-tion including three Heads of Business Studies, the Council’s Economic Devel-opment Manager, and John Magee, of International Business Initiatives under-took a study visit to St Louis, in February 2011. During their time in St Louis they met with schools, businesses, universities and chambers of commerce. The programme was devel-oped by John Magee of International Business Initiatives. the people living in the export country identified: “Small Businesses often forego any exploratory research of new potential export markets because of cost. This leads either to expensive mistakes or missed opportunities. A short, sharp research exercise by a native of the country will allow a small to medium business to make a reasonably informed choice

to “move on” or undertake further action. People buy goods and services. They are often influenced in their choices by custom and practice and can include items as such as unlucky colours or numbers. It is a veritable minefield to the uninitiated.” Referring to the potential to engage local students in this process he added: “A great deal of activity by students on business related courses lacks context. A student may be asked to “research a local company” for example. This is poor use of the student’s time, energy and ability. The student would be better motivated if tasked with a research exercise which is needed. Export Clever™ is providing a structured system allowing students within Strabane District to gain exposure to real business projects which are needed; and companies within Strabane District to quickly ascertain the poten-tial of a new overseas market using local students.”On completion of Phase I of

the programme, Strabane District Council’s Chairman, Councillor Brian McMahon, and the US Consul General, Ms. Kamala Lakhdhir, presented the students with an award certificate for their diligence in providing the business with a profes-sional, well researched report which will inform the Around the Table Games Company in progressing their product for the UK market. As a follow up to last year’s visit to St. Louis, Strabane District Council advertised widely for businesses to come forward who wanted to participate on the programme and work with the American Schools to market research their business. Two businesses from Sion Mills were chosen for Phase 2 of Export Clever™ Programme. Niall Speak of Direct Sound and Lighting and Nigel Collins from Risk & Claims Ltd. travelled to St. Louis accompanied by the Chairman of Strabane District Council’s Economic Development Committee,

Councillor Thomas Kerrigan and again John Magee, International Business Initiatives.

The programme establishes an international business culture for the district. It allows local students and businesses to investigate new export opportunities at no cost and increase their competitiveness. It exposes local students to real business projects and devel-ops their skills which will in turn benefit local employers.Following successful delivery of the first Export Clever™ pilot programme, the model has now been expanded to include other schools and other export markets. Both the Strabane Academy and the Holycross College are continuing to work on the programme.

The Council recently hosted a Skype Conference for over 45 students from both schools and the BBC’s Hearts and Minds Programme broadcast recording on the 1st March, 2012.

For two years now, Strabane District Council has funded the innovative Export Clever™ Programme which aims to encourage inter-national trade and export amongst young budding entrepreneurs and local busi-nesses. The programme was recently high-lighted by the BBC Hearts and Minds Programme because of its potential to increase international export and assist eco-nomic recovery locally.

eBay Training has proved a phe-nomenal success with the public in Strabane District with large num-bers of people availing of the chance to learn how to get onto the online market.Strabane District Council has been at the helm of training its businesses and individuals to go global and take advantage of eBay to trade online. The Council’s Economic Development Department has now completed 5 courses with over 75 participants in the past year. The 2-day courses clearly explained how to prepare listings for eBay and how to maximise profits whilst minimising inputs. The courses were distributed throughout the district with venues such as Strabane, Donemana, Newtownstewart, Castlederg and Bready. The courses, conducted by Michael Hughes – eBay’s highest ranked Education Specialist in the UK or Ireland – brought the attendees from ‘introduction to eBay’ to ‘setting up virtual shops’ on the advanced sessions with real live sales. The Council has been extremely pleased with the comments from those who participated on the training and the percentage who decided to explore enterprise through eBay, or those who extended their main street shops to trading on eBay, or those who dabbled at trading to increase their income from home. Michael Hughes, whose courses have been filmed and broadcast on BBC and who is a regular interviewee on radio stations on both sides of the border congratulated Strabane District Council for its “far sighted approach to the needs of indigenous entrepreneurs.”The Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian McMahon said “We have been

Kelly at the reception of the Hotel and Brian Mc Devitt in Joe’s Bar and both were greatly enjoyed. The same happened with the Karaoke where spot prizes were given. While, the Irish Dancers look beautiful and danced their hearts out all day long, they contributed greatly to the enjoyment and

atmosphere of St Patrick’s Day. Thanks to all the dancers and to their parents, who dressed them so beautiful and provided the music. The Car Boot Sale was a great success with all kinds of goods on offer, and everyone agreed that they don’t do it often enough.

Breezy Willows held everyone spellbound with her story telling. Singing and Bread Making the scenes and sure tasked good, we don’t see enough of this talented lady. The day concluded with the annual Irish Coffee Making Competition.

Three Holy Cross College teams make Northern Ireland Cup Finals!

Holy Cross College have a staggering three teams through to the Umbro Northern Ireland Cup soccer fi nals. The school will compete in the boys’ U16 and U18 fi nals at Ballymena Showgrounds on Wednesday April 25, while their senior girls team, who are current holders, will play their fi nal at Moyola Park on Thursday April 19. The U18 boys play Devenish College, Fermanagh. The U16 boys face St Joseph’s, Derry and the senior girls team play Our Lady and St Patrick’s Knock. The Holy Cross coaching staff, Gerard Boyle and Stephen Donaghy, are naturally delighted with the success of all three teams.

“It is a brilliant achievement to get one team through to a fi nal in a period of fi ve to ten years but to have three in the one year is unbelievable,” stressed Gerard, speaking to the ‘Herald last week. “It’s an amazing achievement and it’s great for Holy Cross

College and Strabane as a town to have three school teams doing so well. While it’s great to see this suc-cess, I must stress that it did not happen overnight. All players have trained hard and consistently. This is now simply years of hard work bearing fruit.”It is hoped that the people of Strabane can come out in force to the Ballymena Showgrounds and Moyola Park to support the teams. For the U16 and U18 fi nals in Ballymena there will be a 52-seater bus leaving from the town and also about 400 stu-dents from Holy Cross cheering the teams on. “Hopefully we’ll have lots of local support because it is going to be a football carnival for the people of Strabane. Let’s not forget the St Mary’s Boys school team from the town who will also be participating in a big fi nal on the same day and in the same venue as our U16 and U18 sides. The U18 boys kick-off

at 10.30am, the U16 boys kick-off at 1pm and St Mary’s Boys kick off around 2.30pm, so it is well spread out and quite the feast of local football,” Gerard enthused. The Holy Cross girls team kick off their fi nal at 12.30pm at Moyola Park, as they hope to retain the cup they brought home last year. “The girls will go into the fi nal as favourites,” explained Gerard. “However they are facing a very strong St Pat’s

side, which have had great results through the dif-ferent rounds leading up to the fi nal. Yet we also have a great group of girls, with a side that can boast fi ve schoolgirl internationals, all at different levels over the years.”It is now hoped that such a major achievement has given rise to an appetite for success that should hold Holy Cross College in good stead for many years

to come. “If it helps us to push these young players on to the next level then that would be fantastic,” explained Gerard. “It is also inspiring the younger students and they too now want to play in the big stadiums and in the big fi nals. Overall it’s a great moment for Strabane and the achievements of these teams have really helped to put Holy Cross College on the map.”

Treading the Boards in GlenellyThespians in Glenelly area are poised to perform their sixth annual production this month in the name of local charities.Glenelly Players will perform Michael J Gin-nelly’s play ‘A Wake in the West’ for five nights, starting on Wednesday the 18th April, and fin-ishing on Sunday 22nd April. The light hearted comedy is to be presented at Cranagh Hall, and tickets will go on sale this week. The play features an ensemble cast of local amateur actors and actresses, and is being produced and directed by Plumbridge man David Coyle. He said the production has a great community ethos: “This is something they do every year; they’ve been doing it for the last six years. They do it for the community they live in and totally for char-ity. For me that’s the most important thing – they take their time in the midst of everything else that they do, and they come down to rehearsals for hours to benefit their own community. It’s that connection with their own people,

that’s the people who come and see them and spend the money that is then used to give to charity.”To date £21,000 has been raised for charity, and David encouraged people to offer their support: “It’s a very funny play. It was written in the west of Ireland, it has elements of fun, parts of it are ridiculous and it actually moves into surrealism by the end of it. It’s not a heavy play at all. People, when they come, have a good night’s entertainment.”

Tickets are available from Tuesday 2nd April – Saturday 7th April at Glenelly House, Main Street Plumbridge between 7pm-9pm (but not on Friday 6th).

St Patrick’s Day in MK’s Bar

Strabane District Council hosted a public speaking competition for local primary school children recently which focused on: “Shrink Your Bin… One Less bag to Land-fi ll”. The competition, organised by Northern Ireland’s three waste management groups, Arc 21, SWaMP and the North West in co-operation with Rethink Waste and Cooks-

town Textile Recyclers, gave local children an opportunity to speak out about the mas-sive impact our current lifestyle is having on the environment and the wider world.

Overall the standard of public speaking was very high. There were 8 children from 4 local primary schools in the Strabane District who entered the competition, which is in its 14th year. It was clear from the speeches that the children all care very much about the increasing level of waste in the district and

beyond. They were concerned about the work that they will inherit as adults. The chil-dren all showed that they had researched the topic thoroughly and were able to pro-vide detailed facts and fi gures about the waste problem that is causing increasing concern. They emphasised that we all need to make an effort to reduce and reuse our waste as well as recycling it as this will not only benefi t our own country, but our chil-dren’s future.

The winners of the competition which was called Environmental Youth Speak were: 1st Francesca Gillespie from St. Columba’s Pri-mary School, Clady, 2nd Lucy Casey from St. Columba’s Primary School, Clady and 3rd Taylor Conroy from St. Joseph’s Primary School, Glenmornan. Francesca Gillespie will go forward to represent Strabane in the Junior Section of the North West Regional Final of the competition, which will be held on the 26th April 2012 in Newtownabbey.

By Shaun McGonaglewww.golffocus.net

Today I want to talk about putting, how to use the mind when putting.

Do you avoid a loss or take a gain??

I vividly remember having a conversation with Aaron Kear-ney a current member of the Irish team, I have been working with Aaron for just over two years, in the time we worked together about his putting. He had noticed for a number of weeks that from the 6 to 10 ft range, if he had a putt for par, he would more often than not hole it. Yet, he just didn’t seem to be able to convert the birdie opportunities at that time. He felt everything he did in the way he approached the putts was the same, yet the results were poles apart. I would guess a lot of you reading this article may have experienced something similar over the years. It never ceases to amaze me how golf can throw at you the most illogical and quirky sta-tistics, the likes of which have no place in logical analysis. As we all know, from the minute you hit your fi rst tee shot to

the point where you hole your fi nal putt, each and every shot counts EXACTLY the same. A golf shot is a golf shot! Yet, it would seem we do better on certain shots than others.Imagine two scenarios which face us each and every time we play a game of golf. We have a putt to AVOID a bogey or a putt to GAIN a birdie.

Which do you think we would execute more successfully?

Economists David Pope and Maurice Schweitzer at the University of Pennsylvania analysed more than 2.5 mil-lion putts in detail to see if there would be any difference. Their results were fascinating in that at almost very distance, the conversion to SAVE par was statistically better than the conversion to GAIN a birdie! Why is that? What could be going on in our mind when the ACTUAL putt for par or birdie has NO more or less value when counted together in an overall round of golf? One possible explanation for this is something called ‘loss

aversion’, noted Psychologist Daniel Kahneman has written extensively about this and the fact most humans will do more to avoid loss than move towards gain. Loss aversion theory tells us that in effect, it seems to our human mind it is more painful to lose £100 than the equivalent balance of pleasure in winning £100. Pain seems to outweigh the pleasure. Could it be we subconsciously focus differently when we are faced with the possibility of ‘losing’ a par as opposed to ‘gaining’ a birdie. We somehow do more to avoid the loss than to secure the gain. Totally coun-terintuitive but it is something I have seen time and time again with players of all levels of the game. These unconscious driv-ers of our behaviour shouldn’t have such a powerful pull but they do. Loss aversion could perhaps also explain how we feel so uncomfortable when we get to a point in the round when we are under par or play-ing below our handicap. Again, do we subconsciously want to ‘hold on to what we have’ a bit more than we want to go lower and shoot a seriously good score. It is almost universal we all have scores we are comfort-

able with and when we start to look as though we can shoot lower than that we want to hang on to that possibility. We don’t tend to keep pushing forwards and riding the wave of our excellent play.

What can you do about this and how can you avoid the mysterious drive that is ‘loss aversion’?

For me, I see over and over again if I can get a player to become more concerned with his PROCESS before the shot and less concerned with the outcome, then results tend to follow. I often get players to ‘score’ their process or their routine on each hole. If they have carried out a series of key steps before they hit the ball or stroke the putt, then they have done their bit. They have done all THEY can to infl uence the outcome. The more deeply we focus on the process to a shot as opposed to an outcome (score) then the more we are absorbed in what we can control. It is NOT easy and we have been conditioned for so long to be

Mind control when putting

VERY score orientated. The more we feel we have a score in the bag, the more we become scared of losing it. It is a process of training your brain to become very proud of sticking to a proc-

ess on each and every shot and the more you have that as your goal, the less you are going to be buffeted around by the vagaries of the outcome and the misery of being too score orientated.

Strabane Athletic Football Club Notes

SAFC Player Profi le

Strabane Athletic have taken a step closer towards successive promo-tions in the Fermanagh and West-ern league. With 3 games remaining Athletic are still sitting pretty on top albeit on goal difference from Killen Rangers but with a game in hand over their near-est rivals. So not only are they looking odds on for successive promotions they look good for suc-cessive league titles as well. Recent wins against Spamount Swifts (4-0) and NFC Kesh Reserves (1-2) ensure they still lead the way. The clubs fi nal 3 fi xtures are yet to be rearranged but will be against Glebe Utd at home, Strule Utd and Ard-straw Reserves away and will be announced on the clubs website and Facebook page when confi rma-tion is received.

Mulhern Cup Qtrs this SaturdayStrabane Athletic made the journey to Enniskillen’s Lakeland Forum just over a week ago to take on 1st division Enniskillen Rangers in the 3rd round of the Mulhern Cup and after a great fi ght back deservedly put themselves into the hat for the 1/4 fi nals after a dramatic penalty shoot out win. Some may say this was a bit of a shock but with Strabane on the brink on promotion from the second tier of the Fermanagh and Western it was more than expected from those who made the journey to sup-port the team on the day. Athletic will now go on to play the holders, Ballinamallard United Reserves in the quarters which is scheduled for this Easter Saturday. All the latest news and statistics for the club can be sought on the clubs website - www.strabaneafc.com

Flag Day The Flag Day was held on Saturday 24th March in town and was a great success as we raised £700. The club would like to thank all those that helped out on the day and for everyone who gave gener-ously. All monies will go towards club development and promotional efforts within the community and beyond.

Golf Classic The clubs annual Golf Classic is next on the cal-endar. It will be held at Strabane Golf Club on Sunday 22nd April. More details on the event will be release over the coming weeks but anyone interested in competing can contact Strabane Golf Club to register their

ANXIETY and PANICAnyone who knows me or has read my articles will appreciate that I believe the mouth is not for breathing. I believe that the only way to breathe is in and out through the nose - whatever you happen to be doing. Whenever some people breathe through their mouths their bodies will have to compensate for the fact that they have bypassed the primary fi lter, (the nose), by creating excess mucus through the sinuses in a vain attempt to produce a secondary fi lter in order to prevent overwhelming the immune system with whatever nasties may be contained in the incoming air. This can lead to the sinuses becoming infected and cause great annoyance and discomfort. Other mouth breathers may simply become anxious and acute mouth breathers may suffer full blown panic attacks. There are many different theories why some people take panic or anxiety attacks. My experience has taught me that hyperventilation can be the primary cause of the condition. Hyperventilation is simply breathing more than the body needs. We are all too aware these days of the detrimental effects that eating or drinking more than the body needs can have on the human system. Over breathing can also have a negative impact on our health? Many of us experience situations when we think that we are not getting enough breath and when we feel breathless believe that the best thing to do is to breathe more. Actually it is much more helpful when you teach yourself to breathe less in such circumstances. Instead it can be useful to practice this simple exercise :-Breathe in through the nose, out through the nose, hold your breath on the out breath and hold your

nose for a count of 5. Then let go of your nose and recover, breathing gently in and out through the nose. Repeat breath holding and letting go in this manner until the anxiety or panicky feeling subsides. With practice you will get really good at this and your will fi nd that learning to reduce your breathing is one of the easiest ways to control how you feel. If holding your breath for a count of 5 seems stressful to you, hold it for a count of two or three and repeat this process. The aim of the exercise is to reduce the volume of breath and allow yourself to calm in a more natu-ral way. By breathing more you are increasing the volume of breath and oxygenating the panicky ‘fi re’ as it were, and making it ‘burn’ even more furiously. By holding your breath you are intro-

ducing carbon dioxide to the ‘fi re’ which has the effect of putting it out. As a preventative measure it is useful to reduce your breathing at every opportunity. When driving in the car do some breath holds and when walk-ing, hold your breath for a few steps and repeat the exercise regularly as you walk along. Always remember to keep your mouth closed when walk-ing and if this is too stressful simply slow the pace down or rest for a little until you feel comfortable again. Remember breathing through the mouth is never an option. Have a go and enjoy being able to control how you feel.

Until the next time,Tom Herron

Donnelly & Taggart Eglinton have recently announced further expansions with the news of Fiat & Fiat Profes-sional joining the multi-franchise site this Spring. The region’s third biggest car dealership network has completed a deal with Fiat that will see it spearhead a major sales push from the brand in Northern Ireland.

“Fiat is a sleeping giant in Northern Ireland where its market share is well below the UK average,” said Victor Pollock, Sales Director Donnelly & Taggart.

“The potential is there to grow Fiat in the North West,” he added. With an improved and expanded dealer network, Donnelly & Taggart Eglinton believe the Fiat brand, which features a range of stylish, well-engi-neered, and economical cars will be a big hit with the Northern Ireland public. Victor Pollock said the move would herald a new and exciting era for the Italian marque in the North West. “Fiat has always done quite well in our Belfast branch, but hasn’t done well in the country because the dealerships haven’t been there. We are going to change that,” he said. ‘The Donnelly Group is unique in Northern Ireland with our province wide

approach to sales and service as we appreciate that not everyone with motoring needs lives in the Bel-fast area. Donnelly & Taggart will be the sole Fiat dealership network in the region with the group planning to provide a group and region-wide serv-ice to Fiat Group customers for the fi rst time’. “Fiat has developed a great reputation in recent years for making some very eye-catching, fun, and well engineered cars. You just have to look at the Fiat 500. Pound for pound, we think it’s the best looking and most desirable car around. Everyone just wants one,” he added. “Fiat also has TwinAir technology which means engines with good performance and really impres-sive economy. Fiat has the lowest average CO2

emissions of any brand and we all know that zero emissions means Zero Road Tax. These are the cars that people want to buy nowadays.” “We are already getting customers enquiries from far and wide and we have only recently opened,” he said. The message from Donnelly & Taggart is that Fiat brands represent a very exciting opportunity for the Donnelly Group in Northern Ireland and we can expect to see many more of them on our roads in the years ahead. For more information on the New & Used Fiat & Fiat Professional range please call the Fiat Sales team at Donnelly & Taggart Eglinton on 028 7181 3038 or log on to www.donnellygroup.co.uk
