STATUS/IMPACTS

Overall status 4 River Water Bodies - 3 Moderate, 1 Poor. No lakes

Status elements Q-values dictates status for 1 moderate and the 1 poor WBs. Phys Chemical drives the status for the remaining 2 moderate WBs. Chemical status is not monitored.

Possible Impacts - EPA Water Quality 2004

CROOKED (STRADBALLY)- Indications at Stations 0200 and 0400 were of a recovery to satisfactory conditions in the upper half of the Crooked River but, following recent dredging at and above Timoge Bridge (0600), the lower half of the river was very heavily silted and in a distinctly unsatisfactory condition in late August 2003. Waterbody Code: SE_14_1278 / 2009 status: Poor (Based on Q value 3) STRADBALLY (LAOIS) - Low water levels are likely to have exacerbated pollution effects in the Stradbally river in 2003 and this was particularly evident at Bauteoge (0100) upstream of Stradbally and again at Ballykilevan (0350) below the town: both locations were assessed as moderately polluted, a deterioration in comparison to their previous status. Waterbody Code: SE_14_1772 -Status 2009: Moderate (Based failure on physchem); SW_14_525, Status 2009: Moderate based on Q Score. This is further downstream towards confluence with Barrow.

PRESSURES/RISKS

Nutrient sources 84% of TP is Diffuse, 74% of which is from Agriculture. 15% of TP comes from WWTP.

Point pressures 2 WWTP –Stradbally and Kilmacow WWTP. 1 Section 4 – Building Company

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) and Industrial Discharges

Stradbally WWTP – At Risk

Quarries, Mines & Landfills

There are 13 Quarries.

Agriculture The majority of the area of the WMU is at risk from Agriculture

On-site systems There are 984 septic tanks in this WMU, none of them are posing a risk to water quality due to their density, location and unsuitable hydrogeological conditions.

Forestry No water bodies at risk from forestry

Dangerous substances

No water bodies at risk from Dangerous Substances.

Morphology 2 water bodies at risk - SE_14_575 and SE_14_1278 - Barrow Drainage District (Pre 1945 Drainage Works)

Abstractions 4 abstractions but no waterbodies at risk .There are groundwater sources for drinking water supply at Kyle and Orchard Lower

Other 1 AWB - Grand Canal Barrow Line

SELECTED ACTION PROGRAMMENB All relevant basic measures, general supplementary measures and SEA mitigation measures apply

Point Sources Stradbally WWTP – refer to WWTP Measures Table below left.

Upgrade approved in 2007.

INDUSTRY: Examine the terms of discharge authorisations to determine whether they require review for the purpose of compliance with water body objectives including protected area objectives and environmental quality standards. .

Diffuse Sources AGRICULTURE - Good Agricultural Practice Regulations and Enforcement.

Other MORPHOLOGY – Investigation into impact of past drainage / channelisation on the 2 water bodies at risk.

OBJECTIVES

Good status 2015

none

Alternative Objectives

Extended Deadlines – all 4 water bodies – 2021 deadline

New Modifications or Development - none requiring alternative objectives at present.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

Future Pressures and Developments

Throughout the river basin management cycle future pressures and developments will need to be managed to ensure compliance with the objectives of the Water Framework Directive and the Programme of Measures will need to be developed to ensure issues associated with these new pressures are addressed.
