The Concept• Furthering our efforts we started with SA! Jazz Drums and SA! Brushes & Mallets,

we’ve tackled and often-overlooked set of instruments in the sample library world.

• The combination of idiosyncratic performance loops with deeply sampled hits that can be used seamlessly back and forth is the most compelling way to approach these instruments and we feel like bongos and congas work just as well in this context and the jazz drums.

• Again, the performer is of the utmost importance and hiring someone who has a long relationship of what percussionists play in certain situations is essential to recreating those kinds of performances in user productions.

• We want the relationship with the sample library to be as nearly identical to the experience of hiring a world-class percussionist. “Play time here. Play this figure here. Fill into this section and then end with a pp roll on the highest drum.” And having the hits as well as the loops is the only way to achieve this. We’re super proud of this library and using it is a blast and we think our customers will agree.

Each patch contains both the single hits and the loops/fills so everything is in one place.

InterfaceThe interface for both patches is simple and straightforward.

• MIC POSITIONS FADERS AND PURGE BUTTONS

• the gold buttons purge/load the corresponding mic positions


• faders adjust volume of the corresponding mic position

• clicking the name will open the output selection menu to select one of the multi-timbral outputs of Kontakt.

• QUANTIZE

• when this button is engaged all the loops and fills START time will quantize to the next downbeat.

• SAMPLE DISPLAY

• when this is engaged, a display window appears the sample that was just triggered.

• for single hits - it shows the drum, the hand (LH = left hand, RH = right hand) and the kind of hit/articulation

• for loops - it shows the style of rhythm and if a double-time or half-time key is engaged.

• KEY DISPLAY


• this brings up an overlay which shows an overview of the key layout. More detail on this in the Key Layout section below.

• double clicking the “X” in the bottom right corner takes it back to normal user interface.

Key LayoutThere 3 playing areas of each instrument. They are very similar, though not identical in the bottom hit samples.

Bongos

• The multi-velocity, round-robin articulations of the drums in the bottom half, up to middle-C.

• The rhythm/groove loops from middle C upward (the green/orange keys).• Above that, the pink keys are fills• Additionally above that, are keyswitches that change the loops to double-time, half-

time or back to standard time.

Congas

Hit Samples in Detail• Bongos• VERY IMPORTANT: the

drum samples are laid out around “D” as the center of the drum. Everything to the left C# and down, is the Left Hand hits. Everything from D# and up, is the Right Hand.

• C# and D# are your basic “Open” drum hits, left and right hand respectively.

• Bb and F# on either side are your basic “Slap” articulation (again, left and right hand respectively).

• Outside of that, on C and E, is a “Muffled” sample

• On the “macho” drum (the higher of the 2), there are a few additional hits

• B/F = thumb and finger samples, great for ghosted light hits between larger beats

• A/G = muffled slaps

• In the center of each drum, on the note D, is a fun roll-slap hit, useful for accents and transitions.

• Flams - at the bottom of the keyboard in purple

• Rolls - the blue keys below the hembra hits and above the macho hits respectively.

Hit Samples in Detail• Congas

• VERY IMPORTANT: similarly to the bongos, the drum samples are laid out around “D” as the center of each drum. Everything to the left C# and down, is the Left Hand hits. Everything from D# and up, is the Right Hand.

• C# and D# are your basic “Open” drum hits, left and right hand respectively.

• Bb and F# on either side are your basic “Slap” articulation (again, left and right hand respectively).

• Outside of that, on C and E, is a “Muffled” sample

• B/F = “bass” samples. flat hand hitting the center of the drum hard

• A/G = muted slaps

• On the quinto (the center drum), there’s an additional “Open Slap” on the red G# octaves on the outer edge of the quinto’s range.

• In the center of each drum, on the note D, is a fun roll-slap hit, useful for accents and transitions.

• Flams - at the top of the hits range in purple


• Rolls - the blue keys following the yellow tumbadora hits and below the flams.

If you ever need a quick reminder of which keys are what, click the Key Display switch and an overlay will come up with a diagram.

Loops & FillsBongos

Congas

The area with alternating green & orange keys (and sometimes black if unavailable) is your extensive set of loop keys.

• The alternating colors designate when the keys change from one style of rhythm to the next. So from Merengue to Son 2-3, for example.

• Often there are 2-4 variations of the same rhythm. Often with the performance becoming more nuanced/busy as they ascend.

• In the pink keys above the loops are the fills. The quantize button on the interface will similarly quantize to the next bar.


• The Speed Keys - the very top Bb, B and C are the half-time, double-time and standard time keyswitches that do exactly that to all the loops and fills.

Tempos and SyncIn order to get the most realistic performances, we recorded in multiple different tempos. And so those recording don’t get stretched too far where they sound unrealistic, we’ve implemented a system which dynamically changes the recordings as your DAW tempo goes up or down.

• Since it happens in the background you don’t have to think about it too much. But, if you’re wondering why a key turned black when the tempo changed, that is why.

• Also note, that when you hit the double-time or half-time keys, the same function happens. So, it’s not literally doubling the same sample, it’s jumping to one that was recorded much faster and then locking it to your host tempo. So, you’ll notice that a bunch of keys, or all of them go black if you double-time at too fast a tempo, or conversely if you half-time at too slow a tempo. But these can be really useful to add more variation and flavor to both the looped grooves and fills.
