Weland standard straight flight staircases are manufac-tured of steel and are mainly used in industrial buildingsand as escape staircases in different types of buildings. The staircases consist of stringers, treads and landingsof grating as well as balustrades. The steel componentsare, as a rule, hot dip galvanized and supplied inseparate parts for assembly on site.

Our manufacture also comprises straight flight stair-cases for other applications such as installations inoffice buildings, flats, entrances, public rooms, schoolsetc. In these cases the treads normally consist of othermaterial than grating. Also the design of the balustradeand the surface treatment can differ.

73

74

CUSTOM DESIGNThe simplest method for design is to leave the planningto us. Our technical department can look back at manyyears of experience with the planning and dimensioningof straight flight staircases. Just send us your drawing,we do the rest.We dimension and draw the staircase, and all you needto do is check the measurements and approve thedrawing before manufacture starts.

ANGLE OFINCLINATION / RISEFor comfortable passage of staircases there should be acertain ratio between the angle of inclination, the rise andthe going. The suitable angle of inclination lies between30° and 45°, in practice, however, it is often necessaryto compromise due to the limited space for the base line. The table below shows the suitable rise and going whenthe angle of inclination is known.

Angle of Suitable Suitable Ratio* Base line/ inclination rise going height of stair

60° 240 160 0,5857° 230-240 160 0,6555° 230 200 0,7052° 220-230 200 0,7850° 220 200 0,8447° 210-220 230 0,9345° 210 230 1,0042° 200-210 260 1,1140° 200 260 1,1937° 190 260 1,3335° 180-190 300 1,4332° 175 300 1,6030° 170 300 1,73

* If the angle is not known, but the base line is given, divide the base line figure L by the figure for the heightof the stair H, then look up the closest figure in thecolumn to the right

Example:Base line (L) = 3,5 mHeight of stair (H) = 2,5 m

L = 3,5 = 1,4 the angle of inclination is 35°H 2,5

DIMENSIONINGFor the dimensioning of stringers for a straight flight stair-case Building Standards BBR94 and BKR94 apply. Baseline, width, load etc. have to be considered. In order tofacilitate the dimensioning we have worked out a diagramshowing a graph intended to give a lead for choosingthe suitable type of stringer. The graph is calculated fora staircase with an effective inclination of 35 degrees.

FLAT BAR / U PROFILEIf for any reason the WUC profile can-not be used, we manufacture stringers also from flat bars or U-shaped profile.

STRINGERS

COMPUTERCONTROLLEDMANUFACTUREWeland straight flight staircases with WUC profiles aremanufactured in a computer controlled production line- „from coil to finished stringer“ - fully automatically. Thismethod gives the following advantages:• Low weight and esthetic design• Close tolerances• Large delivery capacity• Short deliveries

WUC PROFILESWeland standard straight flight staircases are manufac-tured with stringers of WUC profile. This profile has beendeveloped with the objective of achieving high stabilitycombined with low weight. WUC profiles are manufactured from 3, 4 or 5 mm steelsheet with height (A) 120 and 170 mm respectively.

STANDARD STAIRTREADSType TH6 is manufactured from press-welded grating with mesh size30 x 67 mm. Type TH6-S is manufactured from the samegrating, but is provided with a safety front edge marking thefront of the tread and giving increased non-slip properties.Standard stairtreads are hot dip galvanized and kept instock. Stairtreads up to 900 mm length have end plates 60mm high, from length 1000 mm end plates 70 mm high.Thisapplies to all types of tread.Special type treads can bemanufactured from grating chosen from Weland gratingprogramme (see separate brochure).

STANDARD LANDINGSWeland Standard landings are designed in the sameway as the treads. Standard depth is 500, 700 and 1000mm respectively. Landings other than standard design onrequirement.

STANDARD BALUSTRADEStraight flight staircases can be provided with balu-strades on one side, on both sides or balustrade onone side and hand-rail fixed to the wall on the other. The height of balustrade is as standard 900 mm inthe stair flights and 1100 mm on the landings. In case of danger of fal-ling the height of balustrade in the flights can also be 1100 mm.Se BBR99 chapter 8:232.

PLATFORM BALUSTRADEPlatform balustrades are manufactured on customer re-quirement and always with height 1100 mm. The fixingis done following alternatives A or B. If people are likelyto be expected underneath the platform or its edge, thebalustrade has to be provided with a kick strip to preventobjects from unintentionally getting kicked down. Welandalso stocks standard railings manufactured in modules. These modules can be combined to the required length, see brochure Weland Universal Railings.

FOOTBRIDGESFootbridges manufactured from grating with completerailings, module build-up for easy and quick erection. Thefootbridge consists of grating and stringers welded tothe gangway. The stringers also serve as kick strip. Themodules are connected by bolts. The railing is suppliedin loose parts for bolting together on site.

LADDERSWeland stocks a standard ladder with measurements as shown in the figure. The ladder is manu-factured without railing and hot dip galvanized. Ladders with other measurements and different design on requi-rement, see ordering straight flight staircase.

FOLDING GANGWAY STEPSA somewhat odd product, the Weland balance bridge,is used mainly within the petrol and chemical industries. It is easily moun-ted and easy to handle. It is stoc-ked in different sizes, always hot dip galvanized.

HELICAL STAIRCASESWeland helical staircases are manufactured with stringers in the same way as straight flight staircases. Thestaircases can be freestanding or follow the inside or outside of a silo.

SPECIAL DESIGN STAIRCASESWe also manufacture staircases differing from our standard design. This applies for instance to the stringers, materialused in treads, railing and special surface treatment. Treads of concrete, marble and other stone material accordingto standard of our subcontractors.
