Straight Talk…. ATTENDANCE Matters Did You Know? Attending school is key to your child’s academic success. Schools are responsible for teaching; however the parent is responsible for making sure your child is present. Attendance is important at every level of school from Kindergarten through College. Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid educational foundation that can only be built through regular school ATTEDNANCE ! Research shows ATTENDANCE is the single most important factor in school success! Ways To Help Your Child Be SUCCESSFUL 1. Talk with your child about why it is important to attend school every day. 2. Avoid scheduling doctor’s appointments or family trips during school hours. School calendars are located at www.dothan.k12.al.us . 3. Make sure your child eats healthy food, exercises, and gets plenty of rest. 4. Students often feel “SICK” when there are issues at school they do not want to discuss. Make it a point to TALK TO YOUR CHILD! 5. Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy. 6. Discuss with your child why education is important. Talk about specific examples of how education helps people become successful. Students who attend school regularly perform better on standardized test. Students who have 3 or more absences score lower. Being tardy hurts student achievement. Being just 10 minutes late each day, calculates to nearly thirty hours of missed instruction. Students can copy notes and make up assignments, but there is no way to recover discussion, questions, activities, and explanation by a TEACHER! A child who misses a day of school, Misses a day of learning!

KNOW THE FACTS

Attendance 101 Beverlye Magnet School tardy bell rings at 8:05 AM.

An excuse MUST be provided for ALL absences.

The Following are acceptable excuses: 1x- Parent Note 7x- Legal Note/ Funeral Notices 1d- Doctor’s Note 8x- Principal’s Note

Ten (10) Parent Notes are permitted per School YEAR! Doctor’s Note, Legal Notes, and Principal Excuses will be accepted on an as needed basis.

All absences MUST be submitted to the ATTENDANCE Office five (5) days upon returning to school.

Excuses are accepted before school or during homeroom. Faxed excuses are accepted at 334-792-0886.

Absences DO NOT start over in January. Tardies DO start over.

Dothan City Schools says, “Ten (10) Unexcused Absences per School Year may cause failure in a course.

Students ARE NOT allowed to make up work for Unexcused Absences.

Unexcused Absences/Skips and Excessive Tardies will result in Attendance Conferences, Detention, Suspension, Court Appearances, Driver’s License Suspension/Denial, Registration with Juvenile Probation, and even Parent Warrants.

IT’S THE LAW!Parental Responsibility (Act 94-782)

The Alabama Legislature passed Act 94-782 stating that parents are responsible for (1) enrolling their children in school, (2) ensuring that they attend school regularly, and (3) that they conduct themselves properly as students.

Alabama Act 94-782 requires each local school board of education to adopt and distribute to parents, guardians, and others, a written policy of its school behavior standards; requiring parents, guardians, and others to document receipt of this plan. Each parent or guardian or other person having custody or control of any student required to attend school who fails to require the child to regularly attend the school or tutor or fail to compel the child to properly conduct him or herself as a pupil in any public school accordance with the written policy on school behavior adopted by the local School Board of Education pursuant to this session and documented by the appropriate school official which conduct may result in suspension of the student, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, shall be fined not more than one hundred dollars ($100.00) and may be sentenced to hard labor in the county for not more than 90 days.

The absence of a child without the consent of the Principal, the teacher of the public school, he or she attends or should attend, or the tutor who instructs or should instruct the child shall be prima facie evidence of the violation of this section.
