There is a legend from 13th century connected with Štramberk. Moravia was occupied by Mongols, in those

times. To avoid their attacks, citizens of Štramberk were looking for safety on the hill Kotouč. Storms came and filled ponds above a Mongolian camp with wather. The Štramberk citizens

damaged the ponds, the wather flooded the Mongolian camp and they drowned. Later, when the wather was

gone, there were found bags with human ears in salt, which Mongolians

used to cut off their enemies. Nowadays, so called Štramberk ears, which are delicious gingerbreads in a

shape of ear, are one of the most popular sweets in Štramberk.

The production of limestone in Štramberk dates back to medieval times, when people used to get the stone from more accessible places on hills Zámecký vrch and Skalky. The limestone quarry Kotouč was founded in 1880 by brothers Guttmann‘s company in Vienna. They also built a railway from Štramberk to Studénka. Soon after its beginning, Kotouč became the biggest quary in Austria-Hungary.

Some of the houses have two parts, both consist of a hall, a living room and a pantry. The other houses have a bigger pantry, more living rooms and cowsheds. Many of saddle roofs of the houses are covered with shingle.

The timbered houses are built on rocky slopes where Wallahian shepherds settled in 15th century.

People used to built the timbered houses on stone base walls of various height with cowsheds inside it.
