Humanitarian aid has finally reached the crew of the

Bahraini ship stranded in Omani waters.

Freshwater and fuel for the ship provided by the Omani authorities to the crew at the anchorage came as a huge relief as they have been living without electricity for the past six weeks. DT News staffer Mohammed Zafran reported on April 22 and May 3 the plight of the abandoned crew of the Bahraini cargo company.

“Today we received 5000 litres of diesel and fresh water,” one of the seafarers told DT News, adding that the crew hoped their misery will end and be able to go home soon. The crew as well as union leaders of International Transport Workers’ Federation and Bahrain International Seafarers Society had made several calls to the authorities in Oman and to the employer to help the stranded seafarers.

“This took us by surprise. Until yesterday night we had no idea that we would be receiving fuel and water. It was really hard to live without electricity. In recent weeks drinking water and food was in short supply but now we are confident that the Omani authorities will provide food aid as they have done in previous months,” he said.

“Our condition is still quite bad. It is not easy living in the sea isolated from the rest of the world especially when you are stranded. We are just stationed in the water. Especially when we did not have electricity, it was terrible. Luckily we had spare

batteries for our phones and portable phone chargers, which helped us to establish contact with the outside world. The aid came at a perfect time when all our batteries were getting drained. If the aid did not come, our phones would have died and we would have lost all contact with outside world,“ he said.

Mohammed Arrachedi, who is the International Transport Workers’ Federation’s (ITF) Arab World Network Coordinator, said that the employer of the crew had no role to play in delivering the aid.

“After living nearly two months in dire conditions, the situation was grim. The Omani authorities recognized this and decided to help and we are so thankful to them. The Omani port and maritime authorities deserves credit for this decision,”

Arrachedi said. He said the fiasco is far from over, “There has been no progress on payment of salaries. All crew are yet to be paid. There were 15 others who left, many of them got paid only half of their salaries some did not even get paid anything at all,” Arrachedi said.

“There is currently a case in court; we will have more clarity about as the case proceeds.”

The seafarers, originally a group of 18, were employed by a Bahraini shipping company for the past 18 months for shipping cargo in the Middle East region. 15 of the crew returned home after receiving part of their salary while 3 remained at the ship insisting on full payment of salaries. The crew members who remain in the ship include a Jordanian, Syrian and a Myanmar national.

Friday, May 4, 2018No end in sight to woes of Bahraini ship crewMohammed Zafran/DTNN

[email protected] he plight of the crew of the Bahraini ship stranded

in Omani waters is continuing with no end in sight to their woes as the shipping company is involved in a financial dispute.

The three members of the crew are staying in the ship at an anchorage without fuel and electricity after being abandoned by their employers. DT News reported on April 22 the plight of the abandoned crew of the Bahraini cargo company who are living at the mercy of Omani authorities.

Bahrain International Seafarers Society Chairman Ali Al Ghawas said that despite the society’s best efforts, no progress has been made because the company does not have the financial resources to settle the dispute. “The company appears to

have no money to pay them or their agent who also have a dispute with them. Apart from the financial crisis, the ship does not have sufficient crew

to set sail and the company is not able to get replacements,” he said.

“Bahraini authorities have limitations in what they can do because this is a financial dispute the company is involved in. I spoke to the captain and the chief engineer and I have told them this case is going to take longer to settle because of the nature of the case,” he said.“I am surprised that they do

not have fuel and electricity in their ship. I thought the Omani authorities would provide it. They should be provided with fuel and electricity as it is done in such cases in Bahrain. We should ensure that they have electricity until they leave,” he said.

The seafarers, originally a group of 18, were employed by a Bahraini shipping company for the past 18 months for shipping cargo in the Middle East region. 15 of the crew returned

home after receiving part of their salary while 3 remained at the ship insisting on full payment of salaries. The crew

who remain in the ship include a Jordanian, Syrian and a Myanmar national.Thu Ya Aung, a crew member

from Myanmar who works as the second engineer in the ship said that the situation has not improved. “The situation remains the same, it’s difficult. Without fuel or electricity, it is not even possible to cook. We are in the ship at the anchorage 24/7 for the past many months, never able to go on land,” he said. Mohammed Arrachedi, who is the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF)’s Arab World Network Coordinator said that he is hopeful of a deal to get fuel to the ship. “There are some talks going on to deliver fuel, we are waiting to see the outcome,” he said.

“The crew have been without light since 6 weeks now. How do they go to the market while they are at the anchorage? This is indefensible, the company should be made to pay and send these men home,” he said.

When contacted by DT News previously, the owner of the company denied all allegations.

Paper and paperboard products are a world wide commodity found everywhere

including newspapers, magazines, books, stationery, envelopes, shopping bags, drawing, craft & scratch papers, plates and cups, wrapping papers, tissues etc. Paper is a valuable commodity and a versatile material vital to the growth and development of any country and its communication and packaging systems.

One tree makes about 3,077 pieces of A4 paper. It takes 13 trees to make one tonne, or 40,000 pieces of paper. Paper can usually be recycled around six to ten times.

Paper is playing an important role in education, business, industries and recreation. Even after going electronic, the use of paper has not declined tremendously as was envisaged earlier. About one fifth of the contents of household dustbins consist of paper and cardboard, of which almost half is newspapers and magazines. Industrialized nations, with 20% of the world’s population, consume around 87% of the world’s printing and writing paper. This demand contributed to the loss of much of the forests worldwide.

Paper and allied waste accounts for more than 20% of municipal waste in the country with little quantities collected and sent for recycling and major quantity of mixed paper waste is being collected, transported and disposed in the landfill site each day. The paper waste is not much segregated mainly due to people’s old habits, lack of awareness and absence of local recycling facilities.

The solution to the growing paper waste problem is mainly through ‘prevention’ of reducing or eliminating paper use so that the disposal is prevented in the first place. Printing paper on both sides of the sheet or

using the paper sheets from both the sides rather than on one side is a classic example of paper waste prevention, as it can reduce the need for paper by up to 50 percent.

We need to understand that for every ton of paper used for recycling, the estimated savings are:

- 30,000 litres of water.- 3000 - 4000 KWh electricity - 17 trees - 95% reduction of air pollution.- 3 cubic yards of landfill space.- Reduced waste treatment cost.- 1,400 kg of CO2 gas emissionRecycling of paper is an environmental

priority. It can reduce the load on importing and using virgin paper. Recycled paper can make various products. It can be used for newsprint, stationary, tissues, hand towels and toilet paper. Various packaging e.g. egg boxes, cup holders, presentation boxes and wall coverings can be made. It can also be used for CD racks and toys.

Paper is a biodegradable material. This means that when it goes to landfill, as it rots, it produces methane gas, which is a potent greenhouse gas (20 times more potent than carbon dioxide). With the occurrence of ‘global warming’, the methane and carbon dioxide emissions have to be reduced to avoid its adverse impacts. Forests take large amounts of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and store it in wood, in a process called carbon sequestration. Waste prevention and recycling of paper products can leave more trees standing in the forest, continuing to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

We need to reduce the paper waste by:• Reducingprinting, usingbothsides

of the paper in photocopy and printing.• Usewastepaperasscrappaper.• Avoid envelopes and reuse if

received. • Segregate paper at source and

contact recyclers/ waste collectors to collect based on a weekly collection schedules.

A proposal to impose a fee on foreign remittances

has been rejected as it contradicts with the Kingdom’s constitution.

The proposal was collectively rejected by the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee and the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee in the Council of Representatives, in addition to the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB), Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and Bahrain Bankers Society.

A number of MPs have

submitted different proposals serving the same purpose in the past three years, but they were all rejected by the council.

The latest was submitted by MP Jamal Dawood, who rephrased the proposals of his fellow MPs and demanded to impose a fee on foreign remittances according to the amounts transferred, dividing them upon two categories, below and above BD300.

Dawood said the proposal would encourage citizens and residents to spend and invest in the Kingdom of Bahrain and enhance supervision on the amounts being transferred abroad.

The Economic and Financial

Affairs Committee in the council was tasked to study the proposal and review it with the concerned authorities. The committee rejected the proposal, describing it as “unconstitutional”.

Committee members, headed by MP Abdulrahman Buali, recently asserted that the proposal restricts financial transactions and the flow of capitals, adding that it may create illegal channels for money transferring and may push investors out of Bahrain.

Additionally, CBB informed the committee that the proposal, if implemented, would have a negative impact on foreign banks and the

official exchange rates.BCCI mentioned similar

reasons to reject the proposal and added that it contradicts with the Kingdom’s commitments in combatting money laundering and financing terrorism.

The Chamber also mentioned that the move would harm expats and damage the kingdom’s free economy policies and reputation.

As for Bahrain Bankers Society, it rejected the proposal for several reasons that included forming an additional burden on low-income expats, the limited outcomes expected from implementing it and contradicting with the unified

GCC policies.Dawood earlier explained

to DT News that the proposal stipulates imposing BD1 fees on remittances below BD300 and BD10 for all money transfers exceeding the amount of BD300.

Dawood assured that the proposal would annually generate at least BD90 million that could empower the State budget.

A similar proposal, submitted by MP Mohammed Al Ahmed, was passed by the council in 2016, despite several reservations from some MPs and the CBB.

The previous proposal stipulated charging 0.5 to one

percent of each remittance made from Bahrain. However, it reached nowhere as the second branch of the Legislative Authority, Shura Council, rejected it.

Recent statistics showed that around BD2.5 billion is annually transferred from Bahrain by expatriate workers. This means, if MP Dawood’s proposal is implemented, the minimum amount that would be generated will be BD2.5 billion.

The committee’s decision would be reviewed by the council, in the presence of government representatives, in its upcoming weekly meeting on Tuesday.

Manama

A committee in the Council of Representatives has

rejected a proposal to impose fees on expats for using public roads.

This comes as the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee issued a report rejecting a proposal submitted by two MPs who demanded to double the vehicles’ registration fees for expats as a return for using public roads in the Kingdom.

Submitted by MPs Jalal Kadhim and Ghazi Al Rahma on December 14, 2015, the proposal states that “expats vehicle owners should pay double the fees that are born by Bahraini citizens by amending some of the provisions of Law 23 of 2015 (Traffic Law)”.

The MPs originally demanded to double the fees of the issuance of driving learning licenses and driving licenses for non-Bahrainis, but later limited their proposal to the registration fees. However, the proposal exempts GCC nationals.

Both MPs said the proposal would “provide the necessary revenues for the sustainable development of public roads construction, development and

maintenance”.Kadhim and Al Rahma also

affirmed back in 2015 that the move would reduce the public debt, overcome the increasing traffic congestions, promote the public transportation sector, prioritise public spending by dedicating national resources to only serve citizens, curbing high consumption of subsidised fuel and reduce the environmental side effects caused by vehicles.

Kadhim insisted earlier that “the procedure is ordinary and claimed that it is implemented in regional countries such as

Jordan and Malaysia”.Headed by MP Abdulla

Binhowail, the committee studied the proposal for over 30 months and discussed it with several authorities, including Interior Ministry and the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in addition to the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee in the council.

90k expats own cars In its reply to the committee,

Interior Ministry provided the latest statistics released by the General Directorate of Traffic,

with regards to expats owning registered private vehicles in the kingdom.

According to the General Directorate, a total of 89, 723 expats own private vehicles in Bahrain. The directorate said that the statistics were issued on March 28 last year.

Representatives of the ministry’s Legal Affairs rejected the proposal, justifying their decision to committee members by saying that “the proposal would be an additional financial burden on expats and requires more studying of its pros and cons”.

The Minister of Justice has approved the retrial

of Hussain Ali Moosa and Mohammed Ramadan Isa who were convicted on December 29, 2016, for the murder of a policeman and the attempted murder of some other policemen by use of explosives, a press release said.

Earlier, Bahrain’s Attorney General had sought reconsideration of the death penalty and a retrial of Hussain Ali Moosa and Mohammed Ramadan Isa. The plea followed a complaint made to the Ombudsman Office, a police and prisoner Ombudsman,

which investigated and referred the case and its findings to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The SIU, building on the Ombudsman investigation with its own, suggested the reconsideration of the death sentence after investigations found new documents that had not been presented before the courts at the time of their trial and sentencing, according to the Attorney General.

The Council of Representatives is planning

to discuss in its weekly meeting this Tuesday the establishment of a special official fund to financially support bankrupt expats and deport them.

This comes as the council will review a bill proposed by MP Hamad Al Dossary to amend Article 26 of The Immigration and Naturalisation Act of 1965.Al Dossary proposed to establish a special government

fund that is dedicated to allocating five per cent of all entrance, residency and other related fees imposed on non-Bahrainis to support expats who are proven to be bankrupt and unable of affording to travel back home.

The bill was passed by the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee stating that it is in line with the Kingdom’s constitution. However, the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee rejected it, while the Interior Ministry, had reservations on the proposed law.

U.S. President Donald Trump has not asked the Pentagon

for options to reduce U.S. forces based in South Korea, U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton said in a statement on Friday.

His comment comes after the New York Times, citing several people briefed on the deliberations, reported on Thursday that the president was seeking options to curb the number of American troops stationed in South Korea.

“The New York Times story is utter nonsense. The President has not asked the Pentagon to provide options for reducing American forces stationed in South Korea,” Bolton said.

Trump’s potential moves on the Korean peninsula come as the U.S. president is poised to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program.

The Trump administration is also engaged in efforts to secure the release of three Americans imprisoned in North Korea.

Hundreds of Korean Air Lines workers protested in the center

of Seoul on late Friday calling for the airline’s chairman Cho Yang-ho to resign because of the bad behavior of his daughters.

Wearing Guy Fawkes masks to hide their faces, the protesters carried placards saying “Cho Yang-ho, OUT” and “No mercy”.

The South Korean airline conglomerate has faced mounting public outrage after the chairman’s youngest daughter Cho Hyun-min

was accused of throwing a drink at people at a business meeting last month.

The tantrum by the heiress reignited public impatience with family-run conglomerates known as chaebol that dominate South Korea’s economy, over what some people see as unchecked bad behavior by the rich and powerful.

Cho Hyun-min is the younger sister of Heather Cho who made headlines around the world in 2014 when she lost her temper over the way she was served nuts in first class on a Korean Air plane and demanded that it return

to its gate at a New York airport. She was jailed and returned to work as an executive of Korean Air’s hotel affiliate in March.

In response to the public backlash, chairman Cho Yang-ho has made his daughters step down from their positions at the airline and made a public apology for their behavior.

But airline pilots, flight attendants and staff said they would continue to protest on the streets until the chairman also steps down. They are also demanding greater transparency over the management of the company.

Gaza Border

Israeli troops fired tear gas and live rounds at Palestinians

thronging the Gaza-Israel border on Friday as part of a long-running protest, injuring about 30 people.

Medics said 10 people were shot and wounded and 20 more treated for gas inhalation on the Palestinian side of the 25-mile (40 km) border fence, where Gazans set up tent encampments on March 30 for what they call “The Great March of Return”.

Youths rolled burning tires to within 500 meters (yards) of the

fence, using the smoke as a screen to counter Israeli sharpshooters on the other side. At least 43 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli army gunfire in the last month.

Protestors said they used slingshots to down a small Israeli observation drone overhead.

An Israeli military spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

As Israel celebrates its 70th birthday, Palestinians mourn what they call the “Nakba” (Catastrophe) of their people’s mass-dispossession during the conflict that broke out in 1948.

The Trump administration has asked China to reduce its trade

deficit with the U.S. by $200 billion by the end of 2020, striking an assertive stance in talks aimed at averting a trade war between the world’s two-largest economies.

A U.S. official confirmed the authenticity of a document making that and other requests that were presented to China ahead of two days of trade talks that ended Friday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due

to the confidential nature of the talks.

Earlier, President Donald Trump had said he wanted Beijing to cut by $100 billion the chronic U.S. trade deficit, which Washington says stood at a record $375.2 billion last year.

After the talks wrapped up, the Commerce Ministry said the two sides had agreed to set up a mechanism to try to work through their dispute, though differences remained, Chinese state media reported.

Three Americans detained in North Korea may be released as a gesture of good will, amid preparations for a meeting between leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump, reports say.The three Americans, Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak-song and Kim Sang Duk, also known as Tony Kim, have been detained in North Korea for months. The U.S. State Department has said it can not confirm the validity of the reports on the prisoner move, which came from Choi Sung-ryong, a South Korean activist with contacts in the North.U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is believed to have discussed the prisoners’ release during a secret meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un over the Easter weekend in Pyongyang. At the beginning of March the White House confirmed that President Trump would meet Chairman Kim in late May or early June.

President Donald Trump yesterday said the date and location have been

set for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which would be announced soon, and hinted at progress in winning the release of three Americans held in North Korea.

The White House has said the first meeting between sitting U.S. and North Korean leaders could take place in the coming weeks. Trump is expected to push for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

“We’re having very substantive talks

with North Korea and a lot of things have already happened with respect to the (U.S.) hostages. I think you’re going to see very good things,” Trump told reporters.

The U.S. government is looking into reports that three Americans arrested in recent years in North Korea had recently been relocated from a labor camp to a hotel near Pyongyang, as expectations grow that they will be released before the summit.

Trump said this week that the demilitarized zone, or DMZ, between North and South Korea would be

an excellent venue for the planned summit, but that Singapore was also a possible site.

The Peace House at the DMZ was the venue for a meeting last month between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Trump also told reporters on Friday that he was not considering reducing the U.S. military’s presence in South Korea as part of the negotiations.

“Troops are not on the table,” he said before a flight to Dallas, Texas, where he will address the National Rifle Association.

Chemical weapons inspectors have returned from a

mission to the Syrian town of Douma, where they took samples and interviewed witnesses to determine whether banned munitions were used in an attack last month, a diplomatic source said yesterday.

A team of experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons returned to the Netherlands on Thursday night after going to Damascus on April 14, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The suspected chemical attack prompted missile strikes by the United States, France and Britain on April 13 against several alleged chemical weapons facilities in Syria.

The OPCW is investigating the deaths of dozens of people in Douma, an enclave in Ghouta on the oustskrts of the Syrian capital, on April 7.

The United States and its allies say they were caused by chemical weapons, possibly a nerve agent, used by forces of the Russian-back government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Inspectors visited two sites of alleged attacks and took samples, which will be split at their laboratory in the Netherlands before being forwarded to affiliated national

labs for testing. Test results are typically returned within three to four weeks. The OPCW will not assign blame.

The inspectors were also expected to have taken samples from canisters found at the scene that are believed to have contained toxic agents dropped from airplanes or helicopters.

Russia and Syria last week held a briefing for states belonging to the OPCW to support Moscow’s assertion that no chemical weapons were used in Douma and the attack was staged by rebels.

The briefing was boycotted by several OPCW member states, who denounced the Russian event as “a crude propaganda exercise” intended to undermine the OPCW’s work.

Britain, the United States, France, Germany and others,

said in a statement that all material gathered so far supported their theory that chemical weapons were used in Douma.

The information gathered to date is “unassailable,” they said at the time. Medical NGOs having found traces of chemical agents and authenticated photo and video evidence reinforces the theory of gas intoxication by hundreds of victims.

The World Health Organization has also expressed concern “at reports from its partners of patients exhibiting signs and symptoms consistent with exposure to toxic chemicals.”

A joint United Nations-OPCW investigation concluded last year that Syrian government forces used sarin nerve agent and chlorine in several attacks.

NASA’s robotic Mars lander, InSight, will study the interior structure of the Red Planet to answer questions about the early formation of the inner planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars – 4.5 billion years ago.InSight -- short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport -- is scheduled to launch atop an Atlas V-401 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. InSight is due to land at Mars’ Elysium Planitia on November 4. The mission’s launch period is May 5 through June 8, 2018.InSight is the first mission ever dedicat-ed to the Red Planet’s deep interior and will use its trio of instruments to enable scientists to understand how different its crust, mantle and core are from their counterparts on Earth.InSight’s Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment, RISE, uses the same technol-ogy that a smartphone uses to find its location. RISE will precisely track the loca-tion of the lander to determine just how much the North Pole wobbles as Mars orbits the Sun. These observations will provide detailed

information on the size of Mars’ iron-rich core and help determine whether the centre is liquid or solid. The Heat Flow and Physical Properties Probe, HP3 for short, will be placed on the planet’s surface by InSight’s robot arm.Developed by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt), HP3 will burrow down to almost five metres to take Mars’ tempera-ture, reveal how much heat is flowing out of the planet, and what the source of that heat is. HP3 will help determine whether Mars formed from the same stuff as Earth and the Moon. The third instrument, developed by France’s Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), is an ultra-sensitive seis-mometer. SEIS, the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, is also placed on the Martian surface to take the “pulse” of Mars -- seis-mic waves created by quakes, meteorite impacts, and even surface vibrations gen-erated by activity such as dust storms. These seismic events, heat flows and wobbles will give a “snapshot” of the planet’s interior and could inform scien-tists how the Earth formed and evolved.

President Mahmud Abbas was reelected head of

the Palestine Liberation Organization yesterday, as the veteran leader seeks to strengthen his control over politics in the occupied West Bank.

A four-day meeting of the PLO’s parliament, the Palestinian National Council (PNC), which was not attended by Abbas’s Islamist rivals Hamas, backed Abbas and selected a new leadership of the PLO’s executive committee.

“President Abu Mazen (Abbas) was nominated and unanimously approved as the president of the State of Palestine,” senior Palestinian official Nabil Shaath told AFP.

“An executive committee was chosen and an executive council was chosen.” But the event was overshadowed by comments made by Abbas during his opening speech in which he appeared to blame Jewish behaviour for their persecution in Europe.

Israel, the European Union,

United States and others lined up to criticise his words, which were labelled anti-Semitic.

In closing remarks early Friday, Abbas did not respond to the criticism. The new executive committee, the most senior body of the PLO and effectively Abbas’s cabinet, included nine new names out of 15. A number of potential rivals, including Yasser Abed Rabbo, were removed.

The previously 18-member

committee was kept to just 15 representatives to leave space for Hamas and two smaller parties that boycotted the event.

Some opposed the event being held in the West Bank, where Israel controls movement, and others wanted the meeting to be postponed until a later date.

Hamas, which controls Gaza, has dismissed the PNC meeting.

A reconciliation deal signed by Hamas and Abbas’s Fatah party in October has collapsed.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas offered

an apology after he was accused of anti-Semitism for suggesting that historic persecution of European Jews had been caused by their conduct, not by their religion.

Abbas condemned anti-Semitism and called the Holocaust the “most heinous crime in history” in a statement issued by his office in Ramallah after a four-day meeting of the

Palestinian National Council (PNC), at which he had made the remarks.

“If people were offended by my statement in front of the PNC, especially people of the Jewish faith, I apologize to them,” Abbas said in the statement.

“I would like to assure everyone that it was not my intention to do so, and to reiterate my full respect for the Jewish faith, as well as other monotheistic faiths.”

He said that Jews living in Europe had suffered massacres “every 10 to 15 years in some country since the 11th century and until the Holocaust”.

Citing books written by various authors, Abbas said: “They say hatred against Jews was not because of their religion, it was because of their social profession. So the Jewish issue that had spread against the Jews across Europe was not because of their religion, it was because of usury and banks.”

Gaza City (Palestinian Territories)

Hundreds of Palestinians began gathering on the Gaza

border yesterday for the sixth week of protests in which dozens have already been killed by Israeli fire.

At a protest camp east of Gaza City, several hundred people prepared for demonstrations expected to gain momentum

in the mid-afternoon following the main weekly Muslim prayers.

Organisers said part of Friday’s plans included attempting to fly dozens of kites, some carrying Molotov cocktails, over the border fence.

A 32-year-old man wearing a camouflage hat with his face masked, a traditional keffiyeh scarf around his neck, said they

hoped to fly around 50 kites.“We hope to return back to

our land, which is occupied,” said the man who declined to give his name. “I’m not afraid, only of Allah.”

Forty-nine Palestinians have been killed since protests and clashes began along the Gaza border on March 30 and hundreds of others have been wounded from gunfire.

England’s local elections decided 4,371 council seats, determining the makeup of 151 local government authorities who are responsible for the day-to-day provision of public services. Just over 40 percent of the seats are in the 32 boroughs of the capital, London.

London brought disappointment for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party and relief for Theresa May. The Conservatives held on to Westminster in the heart of London’s political district, and Wandsworth -- both Labour targets.

May’s Tories won councils in the pro-Brexit regions of Basildon and Peterborough, taking votes from the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP), but lost control of Trafford in Manchester -- its only foothold in the Labour-dominated northern region.

Washington

US job growth increased less than expected in April

and the unemployment rate dropped to near a 17-1/2-year low of 3.9 per cent as some jobless Americans left the labor force.

The Labour Department’s closely watched employment report on Friday also showed wages barely rose last month, which could ease concerns that inflation pressures are rapidly building up, likely keeping the Federal Reserve on a gradual path of monetary policy tightening.

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 164,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said on Friday. Data for March was revised up to show payrolls rising by 135,000 jobs instead of the previously reported 103,000.

That was still the fewest amount of jobs created in six months and followed an outsized gain of 324,000 in February.

While cold weather in March and April probably held back job growth, hiring is moderating as the labor market hits full employment. There has been an increase in reports of employers, especially in the construction and manufacturing sectors, struggling to find qualified workers.

The drop of two-tenths of a percentage point in the unemployment rate from 4.1 percent in March pushed it to a level last seen in December 2000 and within striking distance of the Fed’s forecast of 3.8 percent by the end of this year. It was the first time in six months that the jobless rate

dropped. But 236,000 people left the labor force in April. The labor force participation rate, or the proportion of working-age Americans who have a job or are looking for one, fell to 62.8 percent last month from 62.9 percent in March.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast payrolls rising by 192,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate falling to 4.0 percent.

Longer-dated U.S. Treasury yields fell after the data. The dollar pared losses against a basket of currencies and U.S. stock index futures trimmed losses.

The economy needs to create roughly 120,000 jobs per month to keep up with growth in the working-age population. Employment gains have averaged 199,750 jobs per month this year.

Oil prices rose yesterday but stayed below recent highs

as global supplies remained tight and the market awaited news from Washington on possible new U.S. sanctions against Iran. Brent crude oil was up 10 cents at $73.72 a barrel by 1315 GMT. The benchmark contract hit a 3-1/2 year closing high of $75.17 on Monday.

U.S. light crude was 15 cents higher at $68.58.

“The energy complex is entering a consolidation phase as a wait-and-see approach takes hold ahead of next week’s Iranian sanctions waiver deadline,” said Stephen Brennock, analyst at London brokerage PVM Oil Associates.

“Expectations that the United States will pull out of the (Iran nuclear) deal and refrain from extending sanctions relief are keeping both crude markers near three-year peaks,” he added.

ANZ analysts Daniel Hynes and Soni Kumari said Brent could reach $80 a barrel by the end of this year, attributing recent strength to rising geopolitical risks and tighter global supply.

“We expect the market to tighten even further in second half 2018,” they wrote in a note to clients.

Investors are concerned that sanctions against Iran could cut oil supplies.

Iran’s foreign minister said on Thursday that U.S. demands to change its 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers were unacceptable as a deadline set by President

Donald Trump for Europeans to “fix” the deal loomed.

Trump has said that unless European allies rectify the “terrible flaws” in the international accord by May 12, he will refuse to extend U.S. sanctions relief for the oil-producing Islamic Republic.

“Prices reflect a premium for Iran uncertainties. Investors are worried about supplies

after Iran took a tough stance in its response to the United States,” said Wang Xiao, head of crude research with Guotai Junan Futures.

European powers still want to hand Trump a plan to save the Iran nuclear deal next week. But they have also started work on protecting EU-Iranian business ties if the U.S. president makes good on a threat to withdraw. (Reuters)

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said yesterday that

five state ministers would consider ways to subsidise sugarcane growers suffering from weak prices, including possibly making consumers pay a surcharge in addition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Expectations of a bumper sugarcane crop this year have led to falling prices and caused financial losses for sugar mills, which are seeking federal and state government support to cover what they owe farmers.

India is the second largest sugar producer after Brazil.

India had abolished a surcharge on sugar, or cess, after the introduction of the nationwide GST last year, but

the central government has proposed reintroducing it in response to requests by some states.

Speaking to reporters after meeting state and central finance ministry officials attending a GST council, Jaitley said five ministers were expected to deliver other recommendations in the next two weeks, including “the imposition of a cess or temporarily increasing the tax.”

Wholesale sugar prices fell by more than 10 percent in March from a year ago.

Industry officials last month said the amount owed by sugar mills to farmers could leap to a record 250 billion rupees ($3.8 billion) in the 2017/18 season. (Reuters)

Meghan Markle’s father to walk her down aisle

Both the bride-to-be’s divorced parents would have “important roles” in the ceremonyThree siblings of Britain’s Prince Harry’s late mother Princess Diana will be at the wedding

London

Meghan Markle’s father will walk her down

the aisle when the American actress marries Britain’s Prince Harry this month and both her parents will meet Queen Elizabeth and senior royals in the run-up to the ceremony, Kensington Palace said yesterday.

Both the bride-to-be’s divorced parents, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, would have “important roles” in the wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19, Jason Knauf, Harry’s Communications Secretary told reporters.

“On the morning of the wedding, Ms Ragland will travel with Ms Markle by car to Windsor Castle,” Knauf said. “Mr Markle will walk his daughter down the aisle of St George’s Chapel. Ms Markle is delighted to have her parents by her side on this important and happy occasion.”

There had been speculation about what role Markle’s parents, who divorced when she was six, would play in the wedding ceremony. Thomas Markle, 73, a former lighting director for TV soaps and sitcoms had said he had wanted to give his daughter away.

Knauf said they would fly over from the United States the week before the wedding and both would for the first time meet their new in-laws including the 92-year-old queen, her husband Prince Philip, Harry’s father Prince Charles, Harry’s elder brother William and his wife Kate.

The detail about Markle’s parents was part of a slew of information released by Knauf ahead about the wedding which is attracting massive global media attention.

The three siblings of Harry’s late mother Princess Diana, who was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997 when he was 12, will be at the wedding with her sister Lady Jane Fellowes giving the reading.

“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle both feel honoured that Lady Jane will be representing her family and helping to celebrate the memory of the

late princess on the wedding day,” Knauf said.

Harry and William, who is his best man, are expected to arrive on foot at the castle’s St George’s Chapel where the ceremony will be held. Markle will meet her father at the church after arriving by car with her mother.

No details were given of the guests but it has already been confirmed that no political figures would be present who were not personal friends of the couple.

Knauf also revealed that Markle would not be having a maid of honour, and that the bridesmaids and page boys would all be children.

“She has a very close knit group of friends and she did not want to choose one over the other,” Knauf said. “They have also been actively involved in helping her prepare for the day and are going to be there at Windsor on the day before in London and she’s very pleased to have their support on the day.”

One royal who will not be attending is William and Kate’s new son Louis who was born on April 23, although his mother and two older siblings, George, 4, and Charlotte, 3, will be there.

The queen’s 96-year-old husband Philip is expected to be there having undergone a hip replacement operation last month.

Knauf said the newlyweds would not immediately be heading off on honeymoon and would carry out their first public engagement as a married couple the week after the wedding.

One tradition of recent British royal weddings has been for the newlyweds to share a kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the ceremony, something that will not be possible with the marriage taking place at Windsor.

Asked if the world would see something similar, Knauf said: “I have no comments on the kissing today.” (Reuters)

fashion sketches from a former designer of the brand Nike.

West, 40, has been accused of stealing a design blueprint and calling it his own when

in actuality it appeared to be an original sketch by former

It all started when West tweeted the sketch on April 30 with the caption, “This

Yeezy is no longer a fashion company we should be referred to as apparel or clothing or simply YEEZY.”

West’s tweet caught the attention of Spackman who posted on his Instagram Stories a comparison of his sketches and West’s which appeared to be identical. (IANS)

An urban road movie set and shot among the Arab

community in the Israeli city of Nazareth, Wajib (“duty”) is a nicely low-key comedy-drama of fangled family and community ties from Palestinian writer-director Annemarie Jacir. Built foursquare around the charm and skill of co-leads Mohammad and Saleh Bakri,

father and son onscreen and off, it could be helped along the way to theatrical exposure if picking up a prize or two in the main competition at Locarno. Even if the Golden Leopard jury looks elsewhere, however, plentiful further festival play is a given for this accessible and genial glimpse into a complex and sometimes fraught area of the

Middle East, as provided by one of the region’s leading female filmmakers.

Bethlehem-born, Saudi-raised, New York-educated Jacir made waves with her Cannes-bowing 2008 debut Salt of This Sea, and followed up with When I Saw You (2012), skillfully imagining a child’s eye view of the 1967 Six-Day War. (hollywoodreporter)

The film is Bill Holderman’s directorial debut, who has also written the screenplay along with Erin Simms.

“The meetings with the actors were hard because Bill had to convince them to take a chance with him,” Simms said. (IANS)

Pivotal career matters may need to be thought through today. A lot could be at stake at work in the very near future. Whatever tasks you need to tend to could require a lot of effort and concentration. There’s a danger of sinking into a gloomy mood over it, but try to avoid this trap. You’ll probably accomplish whatever it is you’re hoping to do.

Today you might find that a long-term dream finally comes true. Perhaps a trip that you’ve fantasized about for a long time finally shows promise of actually happening, Taurus. A practical and methodical approach to arranging the details should make it seem that much more real to you. However, do take care to plan each step carefully.

Some strange and rather gloomy dreams could come your way tonight. They could, if you let them, catapult you into a rather depressed mood during the day. Writing them down might help exorcise the negative emotions. You could also be a bit depressed over money. This isn’t a good day to make investments, start a new business.

A lack of communication with an unhappy family member could have you feeling a little downhearted. You might wonder if you’ve done something to offend this person. Chances are you haven’t. The best way to handle situations like this is to encourage the person to communicate with you. If there’s no response, wait a day or so and ask again.

The promise of a promotion or raise could be on your mind today. You might try to visualize the next steps and anticipate tasks that take more effort and concentration than you’re used to. Don’t panic. It’s better to not push yourself so hard. Wait a few days until the planets relax a little and just do what you need to do - no more, no less.

You might decide to spend a large part of the day working on a project that requires a lot of mental energy. Plans to spend some time with either a close friend or lover might not turn out to be quite what you’d hoped. Your friend could be in a rather gloomy mood. A relaxing evening, perhaps a concert or funny movie, can release tension and boost bad moods. Enjoy!

A gloomy guest could arrive today, and likely need some cheering up. Do the best you can, but don’t try to do it by cooking a meal. The results of your efforts might not be all that exciting. This is a great day to go for fast food. Take your friend to a movie, concert, or art gallery. This could get your mind off his or her troubles and your mind off your friend!

Some rather depressing information could come your way, but don’t take it at face value. It might not be as bad as it seems. Check the facts before making yourself crazy. This isn’t a good day for visiting or running errands in your neighbourhood, as the traffic could be a nightmare. Anything you try to read today could seem boring, so movies are likely to be the best entertainment now.

A friend might be feeling a little depressed today and need some cheering up. Social events or group activities could be of great help in doing that, and it would do you some good as well. A long-term goal may finally be reached, justifying a celebration. Interacting with a group could take up a lot of your time and concentration, but take care not to get too tired.

Gloom over money matters might catch up with you at some point today. However, there’s nothing really major to worry about. Financially, your business affairs should be going well, so you’re probably doing better than you think. A little caution might be in order, especially regarding impulse buying or purchasing luxuries.

Today you might find yourself feeling a little low, but it doesn’t seem as if there’s any real reason for it. You may just have had a bad night and need some extra sleep. Some good news from far away could cheer you up in the afternoon. You might receive an invitation to go out to dinner with a close friend. You should be feeling like your old self again by evening.Old memories, traumas, and phobias from the past could affect your mood today. You might feel depressed without really knowing why. An event in your life has brought these feelings near the surface without revealing the source. If you’ve had any disturbing dreams or visions lately, write them down. They might offer a clue as to what’s bothering you.

The Swedish Academy which decides the Nobel

Prize for Literature said yesterday it would not make the award this year because of a sexual misconduct scandal that has caused turmoil in its ranks and led to a string of board members stepping down.

The prize, one of the world’s most prestigious cultural honors, is awarded in early October and a postponement or cancellation has not occurred in decades.

But the usually secretive Academy acknowledged it needed time to restore public trust after allegations against the husband of one of its members and the admission

that the names of some prize-winners had been leaked.

The Academy, composed of Sweden’s literary elite, said it aimed to award two prizes in 2019, including the 2018 one.

“We find it necessary to commit time to recovering public confidence in the Academy before the next laureate can be announced,” Anders Olsson, who is interim Permanent Secretary of the Academy, said in a statement.

The turmoil caused by sexual allegations against the husband of one of the board members is unprecedented for the Academy, a revered institution established by King Gustav III in 1786 and still under royal patronage.

Italy’s art police say they’ve recovered three paintings

stolen in recent months from three small Bologna-area museums, after identifying the thief from surveillance videos.

The most well-known piece was a 1363 portrait of St. Ambrose attributed to Giusto de’ Menabuoi that was stolen in March from the National Pinacoteca of Bologna while it was open to the public.

In a statement Friday, the carabinieri art squad said investigators were able to zero in on the thief using surveillance videos from the museums, and tracked him down when he acted “suspiciously” near another Bologna museum.

They then searched his apartment and found the looted works.

Police filed a formal criminal complaint against him for aggravated theft.

China yesterday denied allegations that its forces

targeted U.S. military aircraft with high-powered lasers near China’s military base in Djibouti, resulting in minor injuries to two pilots.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China had informed

the U.S. that “after strict verification, we have told the U.S. side that what they alleged is absolutely untrue.”

“China always strictly abides by international law and the law of the country of residency and is committed to maintaining regional security and stability,” said a Ministry statement.

Emergency declared No injuries or deaths

Anders Olsson, the acting permanent secretary of the Swedish AcademyHundreds of people were

under an evacuation order on Friday after the Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island came to life, belching ash into the sky and spewing fountains of lava in a residential area, officials said.

The volcano, one of five on the island, erupted on Thursday after a series of earthquakes over the last couple of days, including a 5.0 tremor earlier in the day, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website.

Residents in the Puna communities of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens subdivisions, home to about 1,700 people, were ordered to evacuate after public works officials reported steam and lava spewing from a crack, according to the county’s Civil Defense Agency.

Two emergency shelters were opened to take in evacuees, the Civil Defense Agency said, while Governor David Ige activated the Hawaii National Guard to provide emergency response help.

Resident Ikaika Marzo told Hawaii News Now that he saw “fountains” of lava as high as 125 feet (38 m). Other residents also told the news network that they smelled burning brush and heard tree branches snapping.

The Hawaii Fire Department reported extremely high levels of dangerous sulfur dioxide gas detected in the evacuation area, the Civil Defense Agency said.

Footage from a drone aired on the Hawaii News Now website showed lava

incinerating trees as it crept near structures.

A 492-foot-long (150 m) fissure erupted with lava for about two hours in Leilani Estates at about 5:30 p.m. local time, the Hawaii Volcano Observatory said on its website.

Lava, which can reach temperatures of about 2,100 Fahrenheit (1,150 Celsius), spread less than about 10 m (33 ft) from the fissure, the observatory said.

“The opening phases of fissure eruptions are dynamic

and uncertain. Additional erupting fissures and new lava outbreaks may occur,” it said.

The Kilauea Volcano has been erupting nearly continuously for more than three decades. Lava flows from the volcano have covered 48 square miles (125 sq km), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Local officials closed volcano viewing areas while a portion of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was also closed. (Reuters)

Rangers unveiled former Liverpool and England

captain Steven Gerrard as their new manager yesterday, handing the rookie boss the daunting task of ending Celtic’s domination of the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard, who has previously only worked with Liverpool’s Under-18s, takes the helm of the giant club who have fallen on hard times in the past decade despite winning a record 54 Scottish titles.

Celtic -- under Brendan Rodgers, Gerrard’s former boss at Anfield -- are bidding for an unprecedented successive treble and are unbeaten against their Old Firm rivals in 11 games but Gerrard said he could not wait to get his teeth into the new role.

“I’m very aware of Rangers, the size of the club, I’ve watched them from afar and been lucky enough to watch some of the Old Firm games,” he told a press conference at the club’s Ibrox stadium.

“It was a no-brainer for me. There were a lot of different things to think about but from that first phone call I got a special feeling and I knew that Rangers were for me.”

Gerrard, who named former Liverpool team-mate Gary McAllister as his assistant, said he could not help his lack of experience, adding that he had missed the pressure of fighting for three points since he stopped playing.

“I know there will be a lot of pressure and a lot of scrutiny but that’s what I love about football,” added the 37-year-old, who hung up his boots in 2016 after a 12-month stint with LA Galaxy.

Chairman Dave King said Gerrard “ticked every box”

other than experience.“A lot of the other managers

who have been named, they have had experience but that experience was not necessarily good,” he said. “Steven’s character outweighed his inexperience.”

Inspirational captain Gerrard was an inspirational

captain and Champions League winner in a 17-year career at Anfield but now faces a different challenge against Celtic, who sealed the Scottish title on Sunday with a 5-0 thumping of Rangers.

The arrival of the former England midfielder will restore some star power to a league that has found it increasingly hard to attract and hold onto top players against the booming television revenues of the Premier League.

Rangers are still recovering from the fallout of their liquidation in 2012 and subsequent demotion to the fourth tier of Scottish football.

In their s e c o n d s e a s o n back in the top flight, R a n g e r s trail Celtic by 13

points, and are locked in a battle with Aberdeen and Hibernian just to finish second.

Celt ic ’s Rodgers , speaking before the official announcement, had warm words for his former player.

“As a guy he was ultra-professional, (he had) incredible qualities as a

footballer,” he said.“That level of professionalism

all his career made him a great player so I am sure he will take all those attributes into management.”

Rangers fans excited by the prospect of Gerrard’s arrival said he could help the club recruit better-quality players in what is expected to be a busy transfer window.

But the club still have to overcome a huge financial disparity with Celtic. Bolstered by revenue from the Champions League,

Celtic’s £90 million ($122 million) turnover last year was three times that of their Old Firm rivals.

been promoted from his role as the club’s under-20 coach,

Madrid

Atletico Madrid advanced to the Europe League

final 2-1 on aggregate after a 1-0 victory over Arsenal at the Wanda Metropolitano on Thursday. Diego Simeone’s side booked their first final in the competition since winning it in 2012 while also denying Arsene Wenger his last chance to lift a European trophy as manager of Arsenal, where he’s set to leave after 22 years at season’s end.

Simeone, serving a touchline ban after being sent off in the Emirates first leg, watched from a stadium suite as his men rode a goal from Diego Costa to their fourth continental final in his tenure as boss.

Costa was unlucky not to score on just six minutes when he battled past two Arsenal

defenders before firing well wide from an angle with only goalkeeper David Ospina to beat.

Laurent Koscielny came off in the 11th minute with what looked to be a serious, non-contact injury to his lower leg. The France international pounded the ground with his hand and was in visible pain for several minutes before being stretchered off and replaced by Calum Chambers, with reports later suggesting he suffered a ruptured achilles.

Arsenal created their best chance of the half midway through -- Alexandre Lacazette, laying off for Mesut Ozil in the box but the German’s low cross from close range could only find rojiblanco legs in the six-yard box.

Antoine Griezmann went close on 37 minutes, swiveling

and sliding his shot just wide of the post after finding space in the area.

But Costa redeemed himself in first-half stoppage time. Started by a long ball from goalkeeper Jan Oblak, Griezmann’s sweeping pass to the left found the Spain international who held off Hector Bellerin and fired past Ospina with his left foot.

Needing a goal to force extra-time, Arsenal pushed forward in the second half with a harried Aaron Ramsey unfortunate not to make clean contact with only Oblak to beat early on.

Oblak did well to palm a low drive from Granit Xhaka around the post just after the hour mark and Griezmann forced a save from Ospina after fine work from Costa in the box minutes later. (Espn)

Barcelona

Barcelona defender Lucas Digne has admitted he and

his team-mates are desperate to avoid surrendering their unbeaten La Liga record to Real Madrid on Sunday.

Barca are four games away from adding a first invincible La Liga season to their domestic double but this weekend they host a Real side in form, and buoyed by their run to the Champions League final.

This Clasico at the Camp Nou may not carry much importance in terms of the table

but Real’s success in Europe is threatening to overshadow Barca’s success in the league.

Digne, speaking exclusively to AFP, said finishing the campaign undefeated has now become key.

“It’s that consistency, it shows the hard work of the whole group throughout the season, it’s huge,” Digne said.

“Of course, this is a record the team now wants to go for. It is important for us and we will give everything to hold on to it.”

Barca also still feel the need

to atone for their Champions League collapse against Roma, which hangs over the club, despite their domestic success.

Real’s subsequent march to the final has only deepened the sense of disappointment.

“Real winning the Champions League is still hypothetical, it is not done yet,” Digne said.

“There are two sides to our season -- we would have hoped to go further in the Champions League and we thought we could have won it but that didn’t happen.” (AFP)

Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez said yesterday he has withdrawn

his transfer request after a move to Manchester City fell through but the future of the Algerian forward remains in doubt.

Mahrez asked to leave the former Premier League champions in January during a protracted transfer saga that resulted in a 10-day absence from the club but the Foxes held firm.

“It has gone. It was in January, it’s another transfer window. I am still here -- I don’t want to put a lot of things in my head,” Mahrez told Sky Sports News, when asked whether his transfer request still stood.

“At that time I handed a transfer (request) in because

I had offers from Manchester City, so obviously I wanted to go,” added the 27-year-old. “But now I am still at Leicester.

“With me, especially, you never know what is happening. Every time I have to go but I am still here.

“I don’t really want to talk

about (whether) I am going, or staying. I just want to finish the last three games. We will see what will happen for me.”

Mahrez, who has scored 11 goals for Leicester this season, was a key player in the club’s astonishing title win in 2015-16. (AFP)

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has been banned

for four games for insulting a match official following his rant at the referee during last week’s Europa League semi-final, first leg against Arsenal, UEFA said yesterday.

Simeone has already served one match of the ban after watching from the stands on Thursday as Atletico beat Arsenal 1-0 in the second leg to advance to the final. He

was also fined 10,000 euros ($11,942), European soccer’s governing body said.

Simeone was sent off early in the first leg at The Emirates Stadium for shouting at French referee Clement Turpin and also pushing the fourth official after Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin was not booked for a foul on Atletico midfielder Koke.

Simeone’s temper had already been tested earlier in the game when Atletico defender Sime Vrsaljko was dismissed for two bookings in quick succession. (Reuters)

Top seed Alexander Zverev had to contend with a

crying baby yesterday before setting up a semi-final clash against South Korea’s Hyeon Chung at the Munich ATP tournament.

The 21-year-old Zverev, ranked third in the world, needed just over an hour to beat German compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-2 in his quarter-final match.

However, a crying infant briefly distracted Zverev

between serves on his second match point before the defending champion wrapped up his 19th match win this year with a second-serve ace.

With good returns and well-placed ground strokes, Zverev had few other problems and despite recent close matches between the pair, Struff never found his rhythm.

“I’m glad I didn’t have to go to three sets again,” said Zverev who had to go

the distance to beat Struff in Monaco this year and Munich in 2017.

Zverev will be chasing his first win over Chung after defeats last year in Barcelona and in the third round of the Australian Open in January.

Chung, who reached the Australian Open semi-finals, had few problems as he beat 2014 Munich winner Martin Klizan 6-3, 6-4 in his last eight tie on Friday.

“I’m really happy to make the semi-finals two years in a

row,” said Chung.Chung, 21, beat Klizan in

the Munich quarter-finals for the second successive year.

Serving at 4-5 in the second set with the scores at 30-all, Klizan hit a double fault and then struck a forehand long to hand the Korean victory.

In Yesterday’s other quarter-finals sixth-seed Philipp Kohlschreiber faces Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut while Hungary’s Marton Fucsovic faces Germany’s Maximilian Marterer. (AFP)

Sebastian Vettel believes the image of Kimi Raikkonen’s

Formula 1 form in recent years is distorted and that their Ferrari team-mate battle is not as “one-sided as you might think”.

Vettel has won 10 grands prix since joining Ferrari for the 2015 season but Raikkonen is still search for his first victory since returning to the team the year before.

Raikkonen has started this season in brighter fashion, shadowing Vettel in the drivers’

championship and keeping Ferrari just ahead of Mercedes in the constructors’ battle.

Asked if he had noticed a new level of performance from Raikkonen this year, Vettel said: “I think one thing is always to look at the result and the other is if you look a little bit deeper.

“It’s been incredibly close this year so far. To be honest, most of the Fridays I think he had the upper hand so far.

“Here and there I was struggling to understand the car and feel the car.”(Autosport)

MotoGP championship leader Andrea Dovizioso

topped the first practice session of the Jerez race weekend for Ducati, beating Honda’s Marc Marquez into second place by just 0.007s.

Dovizioso snatched the lead from Marquez late on, managing to improve in the final sector despite encountering the Aspar Ducati of Alvaro Bautista.

Pol Espargaro, whose new two-year KTM deal was announced on Wednesday, finished third, just 0.043s off the pace.

Dovizioso’s team-mate Jorge Lorenzo led the session at the start, but it was Marquez who took control by the end of the opening runs, posting several

laps below 1m40s as the only rider to dip below that bracket at that stage.

The reigning champion’s best effort, a 1m39.548s, left him half a second clear of nearest rival Cal Crutchlow - but shortly after the session’s hallway point, the LCR Honda rider matched Marquez’s time exactly.

Valentino Rossi then shot up from 10th to first, leading briefly before Espargaro took over at the top with five minutes left on the clock with a 1m39.311s.

But this effort was quickly surpassed by Marquez and then Dovizioso, with the latter recording his session-topping time of 1m39.268s 30 seconds before the chequered flag fell. (Autosport)

Tom Dumoulin edges out Rohan Dennis by just two seconds in the 9.7-kilometre time-trial around Jerusalem

Giro d’Italia

Dumoulin wins opening stageJerusalem

Reigning champion Tom Dumoulin laid down a marker

to main rival Chris Froome by winning the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia yesterday.

Dutchman Dumoulin edged out Australian Rohan Dennis by just two seconds in the 9.7-kilometre time-trial around Jerusalem as Froome struggled following his crash in morning training, finishing 21st and losing 37 seconds.

Froome’s build-up to his attempt to become only the third man in history to hold all three Grand Tour titles at once -- he won both the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana last year -- had already been compromised by a scandal over an adverse doping test reading in September.

He returned a urine sample with elevated levels of salbutamol and spent much of his pre-Giro

press conference on Wednesday answering questions about whether or not he should even be racing at the Giro.

Froome failed to find top form over the last few months, although he finished a credible fourth at the Tour of the Alps in April.

However, in previous years he has almost always won at least one week-long stage race in the lead up to his major Grand Tour objective of the season.

His difficulties mounted on Friday morning as he was one of several riders to hit the ground on a training ride, suffering cuts and abrasions and ripping his skinsuit down the right hand side.

A video of his crash shared on Instagram showed that he hit the tarmac pretty hard.
