Strangeland / Tierra Rara
Lara, ektor garcia, Janet Jenkins, Emanuel Röhss, Ana Segovia y Mateo Tannatt.

Strangeland / Tierra Rara a temporary exhibition project at Hotel Carlota during
Zona Maco, with works by Adriana Lara, Christian Camacho, ektor garcia, William
Leavitt, Emanuel Rohss, Janet Jenkins, Ana Segovia and Mateo Tannatt.
Conceived and organised in collaboration with curator Carly McGoldrick.
Taking the hotel lobby as its starting point, Strangeland explores the notion of what
it means for something to seem familiar. Through a configuration of works situated
throughout the foyer and common areas of the hotel, the exhibition responds to the
feeling of inhabiting a place that is at once recognisable and foreign, transient, but
has been seen before. Referencing both real and illusory environments, works
appear part of the daily camouflage of the communal space and as irruptions in its
ecology. Shared and strange territories are viewed through the lens of filmic and
social convention, with a collective agenda to build a subtle but jarring juncture.
Translated into Spanish as Tierra Rara, the exhibition title has more than one
interpretation. This can also be read as ’rare earth’. A chemical term, this denotes a
group of similar metallic elements that are not especially rare, but tend to occur
together in nature and are difficult to separate from one another.

William Leavitt (born 1941) is a conceptual artist known for paintings, photographs,
installations, and performance works that examine ”the vernacular culture of L.A. through
the filter of the entertainment industry...drawing on ’stock environments’ and designs of
films as well as the literature of the place.” A critical figure in the West Coast conceptual
art movement of the late 60s, Leavitt was given a significant survey exhibition by the
Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 2011.
pintura.
Janet Jenkins is a painter living in Los Angeles. She’s creates works inspired by a
theatrical lighting device called a cucoloris, which is used to produce dappled shadow
effects. The color in these paintings was meant to be unnatural, artificial since it is
simulating the clear colored gels placed in front of the light source. Jenkins uses this
perforated plywood device as a well as photos of shadows cast by trees and plants to
produce luminous oil on panel abstractions.
Emanuel Röhss (1985) is a Swedish born LA based artist. His work explores the
relationship between architectures from historical as well as contemporary civilization and
the creation of illusion and narrative in popular culture. In recent work he considers
manmade environments between which an imperative pathos, gesture or persona can be
traced and identified as re-appearing throughout different contexts. In his long term project with the Ennis
House he probes this piece of real architecture in how it comes to life as an animate being in its own right
through the production of fiction in film, TV and games.
Working predominantly in sculpture, installation and painting each body of work is made
with careful consideration to the space it occupies.
