• Increasedemployment,basedonthetypeofvalueaddedactivitiesundertaken,couldresultinnewjobsintheregionof2,400-3,000.

• Localbusinessandfirmswillbeprovidedtheopportunitytotransitionto(a)specialeconomiczone(b)inmanycasespartnerwithinternationalfirmstoprovidevalue-addedservices(c)accessnewtechnologyandknowledgetransfer.

• Stimulatebusinessactivitiesintheportecosystemwithspilloverinthewidereconomy.

• Facilitieswillutiliseenvironmentallyfriendlytechnology–renewableenergysolarpanelsaspartofthebuildingsandenergyefficientbuildingtechnology.Theseareexpectedtoreducethecarbonfootprintwhilereducingthecostofenergy.

The Government of Jamaica is committed to fosteringincreased competition and ensuring that Jamaicans haveubiquitous and affordable access to telecommunications.The Government has therefore made available forassignment, 24MHzof spectrum in the 700MHzBandas well as additional spectrum in the 1700/2100, 1800,1900MHzand2.5/2.6GhzBandsrespectivelyforwirelessbroadband services and emerging “fourth-generation”(4G) cellular technologies, such as LongTerm Evolution(LTE)Advanced.The license fee payablewould be for atermof15years.

The sharing of telecommunications infrastructure isexpected to reduce the cost of investment which willultimatelyredoundtotheconsumersoftelecommunicationsservices. It will afford new entrants the opportunity toaccelerateserviceexpansion,and, inadditiontothecostsavings,willlimittheaestheticdeteriorationofthecountry’slandscapeandreducetheenvironmentalfootprintofthetelecommunicationssector.
