Strategic Enrollment Management Plan (SEMP) Update The initial work of the Strategic Enrollment Management Planning Committee (SEMP-C) was recently completed. The SEMP, believed to be the first plan of this type for Southern, provides the rationale for multiple efforts which require enhanced cross-divisional collaboration, intentionality, data, monitoring of outcomes, human and fiscal resources. It connects multiple efforts from throughout the campus, as well as explores different ways of thinking about how various endeavors collectively impact enrollment. Some of the recommendations build upon previous plans and efforts currently underway – such as enhancing the technology infrastructure. Yet many of the strategies are new and innovative, designed to address specific opportunities outlined by President Bertolino in his 2017 visioning document. This draft plan provides a short-term stabilization enrollment goal of 10,406. This 2 %, or 200 student increase from the 10,207 headcount in fall 2017 will require additional transfer and graduate students, a consistent number of freshmen, and modest but steady increases in retention rates. Understanding current fiscal constraints, there are several strategies that do not require additional dollars. Many of the strategies, however, cannot be implemented without a fiscal investment. This plan and the prioritized recommendations will receive a full review and feedback from the President’s Leadership Team, as well as both the Faculty and Administrative Senates. 1 OFFICE OF ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT WINTERGREEN BUILDING | 203-392-6343 | EM@SOUTHERNCT .EDU 1 ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT NEWS JANUARY 2018 “There are no [enrollment] silver bullets, but there’s lot of silver buckshot.” – Medley, 2018

Retention and PersistenceSpring 2018 Transfer Student Advising, Registration, and Orientation Process Changes

Based on the success of the individual advisement appointments and the TRANSFERmation program for Fall 2017 students, these processes will be expanded, with the goal of improving the flexibility for ‘on-boarding’ new transfer students.

Enrollment Steps: Transfer students will continue to utilize the Next Steps portal in order to confirm their enrollment, register for housing, learn about the enrollment steps, and schedule an advising and registration appointment.

Advising and Registration: Transfer students will now schedule appointments to meet with a professional adviser to register for courses and receive advisement. This process offers pre-screening, and a more comprehensive and meaningful advising and/or orientation session.

Appointments: 45-minute advising and registration appointments are offered during regularly scheduled business hours AND during evening hours to accommodate non-traditional students. The Academic Advising and Career Center will confirm these appointments and also ask if students would like to make an appointment with a Transfer Student Assistant following their advising appointment. Students will receive a transition information folder which includes information on resources and important dates. Professional advisers will register students for a TRANSFERmation session prior to departing their advising appointments.

Changes to Printed DiplomasThe Registrar’s Office is pleased to announce that Southern’s diploma will now display the student’s major for fall 2017 graduates. In addition to the degree earned, it is important for students to acknowledge the accomplishment in their particular field of study.

Banner Lift & ShiftThe ‘Lift to the Cloud’ portion of the ‘Banner Lift & Shift’ (also referred to as BannerModernization and Standardization [BMS])was completed in December. Several members of the EM team, under the leadershipof IT, were instrumental in testing andimplementation. Special thanks to Kim Laing,Alicia Carroll, Richard Kearney and Carla Flynnfor their commitment. Though the first part ofthe implementation is virtually invisible to theend-user, we anticipate many improved featureswithin Banner as a result. Preparations for thenext phase of the project will begin soon.

Admission ApplicationPortal The application portal (hosted by TargetX) islive, and Spring 2018 students were notified of their admission decision within the AdmissionApplication Portal. Both undergrad and gradstudents may also now respond to the offer ofadmission (full-timers, by paying a deposit)through the portal.

‘Next Steps’ content for undergraduates is awork in progress. For those who would like tosee the student experience within portal, watchthe video here. As with many newtechnological implementations, the first fewmonths have proved challenging. There is astrong commitment to working through the‘kinks’ and smoothing out the process with thesmaller volume in the spring, in preparation forthe larger volume of the fall applicants.

The Office of Graduate Admissionsconducted several TargetX training sessionsbeginning in September. The training feedbacksurvey showed that 100% of those whoattended and completed the survey hadpositive comments on the usefulness of thetraining. Additional TargetX training isavailable by appointment. Please email MollyMurphy in the Office of Graduate Admissionsor call 203-392-5244.

Campus Advising ToolUpdateOver 12 departments and three administrativeoffices are using the Student SuccessCollaborative (SSC) Campus platform forappointment campaigns. This feature allowsfaculty and advisors to send a group of studentsa personalized email; students can thenschedule an appointment with one click.

The Department of Curriculum andLearning, The Academic Success Center, andAcademic and Career Advising offices haveenabled a Kiosk function so students can swipein for appointments. The plan is to assess itseffectiveness, adjust as necessary, and offer this service to other departments in 2018.

If you or your department is interested inlearning more about appointment scheduling,Kiosk features, or have other questions, pleaseemail Frank LaDore.

New SSC FeaturePINS are now accessible through the SSCCampus. For an instructional video how toaccess PINS, please cick here.

Enhanced TranscriptServicesCurrent and former students may order anofficial eTranscript or printed transcript directlyin Banner Web (current students) or here(former students). Orders are generallyprocessed within one business day. Studentsmay also request an official transcript to beprinted and mailed at no charge through theportal. In addition, students will have access to real-time, end-to-end tracking, so they will know when the transcript has been sent and received.
