As governments and communities demand that the public sector expand its role from governance and administration to service delivery, public sector leaders must develop new skills and thinking. It is not simply a matter though of emulating the private sector. The very nature of public administration requires a different way of thinking and response to enable managers to meet new challenges. The Australian Public Service has responded to this challenge successfully and has developed a framework for driving innovation within public sector agencies. This workshop will explore this framework and provide participants with the tools for success. Learning Outcomes Through a highly interactive and engaging process participants will explore what innovation me ans and will finish the course with a better understanding of; • Why innovation and transformation are vital • What drives innovation • How do the public and private sectors differ • Social innovation • A framework for driving innovation • How to successfully drive change • Transformational leadership Course Contents • Understanding Innovation & Transformation • An Organisational Perspective • An Individual Perspective Training Methodology The workshop is designed to allow participants to share their knowledge, skills and experience in facilitator-led discussions and group activities. These activities have been developed to provide the opportunity for participants to take part in “hands on” application of theory. Course LeaderStephen Barton currently is the Principal Partner of WorkplaceDNA based in Perth, Australia and Senior Fellow at Centre for Innovation and Productivity in Public Administration (PIPPA), Universiti Sains Malaysia . Prior to this, he has over 35 years’ working in the Australian private and public sectors where he has held such senior positions as Manager Human Resources - South Metropolitan Area Health Service (6000 employees), Director Human Resources – Western Australian Police Service (4500 employees), and Manager Organisational Development with the City of Mandurah, (500 employees). He also has 6 years’ experience post graduate lecturing for Murdoch University, Australia and a 5 year association with Universiti Sains Malaysia. This combination of academic teaching and ongoing Senior Management Experience makes him human resources experience. Steve’s particular interest is in assisting organisations to align their strategic plans, operational plans and their Human Resource/Organisational Development strategies. He has worked with hundreds of people in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Qatar and Dubai to develop their skills in general management, human resource management and leadership. This combination of academic teaching and ongoing Senior Management Experience makes him uniquely placed to provide insights into contemporary HR strategies and assist clients to find the balance between theory and the real world.
