Designing your Strategic Plan

Momentum is everything to create a high performing culture and business. However, if a team or leader do not know where they are going, what they are being benchmarked on or measured off or what the plan is, they will be lost. The vision statement defines your organisation’s purpose – it tells us where you’re heading – The strategic plan outlines the how you are going to do it! A great strategic plan strategic plan

• Is reviewed regularly

• Is aligned to the vision and maps out the action plan and priorities

• Is a guidebook to how you intend to measure your achievements

• Provides clear objectives and targets that will create value to your business and success

• You can hire, performance manage, develop KPIs and give feedback based on them

• Policies and procedures are actioned from them

• Your team know what they are responsible to action and implement

The Format A strategic plan can be in a word document, a map, timeline or in a matrix template. It can be from one

page to multiple pages in length. The number of objectives, strategies, outcomes and measurables depends on your business. Don’t get caught up in what sort of template you work from. What works for you and can be communicated easily to your team and board is the right fit. Just make sure it is a true representation of what you’re here to do. Personally, I prefer a mapping whist in brainstorm, then designing a timeline to sequence, a word document to cluster and divide core areas and a matrix or a written page to capture each objective, outcome, strategy and measurable. For my businesses I always have a flow connection through all documents that highlight and are connected always to the vision.
