EACH year we publish the Strategic Top 100 as a way of identifying and highlighting the best infrastructure projects in the world our goal is to identify the projects that should happen honoring the people who are making those projects happen ndash and the value that those projects can create globally in terms of economic growth and individual opportunity

Global infrastructure requirements are significant The world is investing about 50 of what it should in infrastructure and in many countries and sectors the

figure is significantly less We want this annual report - with its focus on specific projects that need to happen - along with our annual Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum - to serve as a tool for pushing more projects forward faster and better The 2014 Strategic Top 100 is valued at US$642 billion These are the most important business opportunities in global infrastructure Projects are selected based on a six-month process beginning with a preliminary list of more than 400 projects from every geographic region and infrastructure sector

To select and rank The Strategic Top 100 we follow a systematic and disciplined approach both qualitative and quantitative To make the initial cut we determine whether a project offers a business opportunity in the next 3-18 months unless we believe that there is a clear business opportunity within that time frame the project is not included in the Strategic Top 100 no matter how large worthy or significant

Then we rank each project based on six criteria

The project involves the construction of a railway line that would link Niamey Niger with the Ivory Coastrsquos commercial hub of Abidjan via the capital of Burkina Faso Ouagadougou This project will coordinate with the extension of freight rail construction in West Africa

The project was designed to help strengthen economic integration and sub-regional cooperation in West Africa to establish a permanent highway link through the south between Mali and Senegal and to help reduce overall transport costs and foster economic exchanges between the two countries

The project will develop a sustainable urban transport system (UTS) in Gazipur in northern Dhaka by building a 20km bus rapid transit corridor This project provides a holistic solution for integrated urban mobility in Dhaka where no modern UTS currently exists
