Chapter 1- The Principles Of Deep Trance

“The soul never thinks without a picture.”

Aristotle

First Principle: Relaxing And Letting Go The secret of a good trance state is to make believe the same way a kid does. You ignore reaLiTy, Forget what is real and what isn’t real, what is possible and what is impossible, what you are experiencing right now, and what you are only imagining_. Let go your grown up mental set, forget all the rules and indulge yourself. Trance is a form of play. When you are doing make believe, you can just let yourself experience it as if your fantasy were actually happening. This can be difficult because since the age of 5 we have been taught to keep our attention on the “real world.” But I have to wonder:

Is the unconscious mind real? Because the word real means ‘Having substance’ the unconscious mind cannot be real.

What is real about hypnosis and the connection to the unconscious mind and body? The answer lies in the fact that the bridge that connects the body and mind is the same bridge that moves us from ‘real,’ to ‘unreal.’ We must now consider the unreality of the mind, and its ability to know that ALL is MIND! A Lesson from the Shaman: None of the world around us is REAL. The body is just as unreal as anything else. It can be changed quickly, if not instantly. You can therefore heal your body and mind at anytime, relieving yourself from anything, from high blood pressure and low metabolism, to anger, addiction, and fear!!

Forget the rules. Learn how to completely relax. When ones mind and body becomes deeply relaxed it is easy to let go. If you know how to fall asleep, then you know how to relax. If you don’t know how to sleep, then you definitely want to do the exercises to your fullest potential. We are not talking about snoring away. Everybody has his or her “best” level of arousal for working with your imagination. For some people it is very close to normal waking consciousness; for others it’s a drowsy head, and body puddled on the floor. The point is to stop trying, stop straining, and stop forcing. Start indulging in your imagination. For most people relaxation will happen automatically, naturally, kind of like the feeling of being slightly tipsy or high.

Deep mind-body relaxation can help put things in perspective. We can observe the way in which we are thinking, feeling, and acting. We can program new resources, adapt new beliefs, and experience spiritual growth. Remember: to successfully work with hypnotic techniques, you must always begin by relaxing and letting go. Details will come with time.

Second Principle: Imagining Along With Suggestions Once you are relaxed and you let go, you can do things with your mind. Instead of clearing all your thoughts, you can just blast right through them. You can build dreams, and desires, and keep them motivating you from the forefront of your mind. You look at them, alter them, turn them from real to unreal, from a wish to a destination, and from a dream to a goal. Think like a designer. They enter an ugly house, and automatically begin to hallucinate the magnificent finished decor. If you read a book or watch a movie then you go along with the script, attaching your own interpretations to every scenario. When I write these scripts I simply give a set of instructions acting as a tool to guide you into new thought perspectives. The key concept is to imagine what is being said. Now, you don’t have to see, or hear, or feel anything in any way whatsoever, you only need to think and feel as if you are doing so. Nor do you have to accept or believe what is being suggested; you merely have to go along with it as if these events are actually occurring.

Remember: how you imagine things is your own affair. Neuro-Linguistic Programmers will tell you, “The map is not the territory.” This simply means that we look at the same maps, but we all interpret them differently. We have different attachments to different parts of the map, and we have different points of interest that make us all unique. The more you involve yourself in the process of building your own subjective experience in trance, the better results show themselves. Trance is something you do, the more you put into it… the more you get out of it. Put your heart into it, and don’t be surprised if you find more heart because of it.

Third Principle: Avoid Trying, But Allow It To Happen Trying is a trap, even though I always say, “If you don’t try too hard, how do you know you are trying hard enough?” The thing is, when you try to trance, you redirect your attention and your efforts away from what you are trying to do, and into all the little steps and stages involved in bringing that about. Trying is like applying brute force; you push, shove, pull, strain, and tug— everything except allowing the eVents to take their own natural course.

Fourth Principle: Whatever You Experience Is Always Appropriate Think of going into trance as being in a waking dream. In a dream you have many experiences and no matter how sketchy, rich, or real, being in a dream is as normal as eating toast for breakfast. Many people wake out of a dream with new insights, product ideas, or desire. In trance you will harness the power of your creative mind. Unlike a dream, you are in full control of your thoughts. You will have new insights and revelations as you learn to go deeper, and deeper, more relaxed with each session of hypnosis, self-hypnosis, and trance. Your thoughts will become clearer, your ideas manageable, and your dreams and desires will become clearer indications of a calmer, newer, and happier existence.

Fifth Principle: Let It Flow One of the most wondrous aspects of going into trance is that you have new insights and new interpretations of what is real, and what reality really is. Stopping your insights mid way is like having a plane fall out of the sky. You were flying to this new exciting destination and suddenly you decided to resist. Boom, the adventure ends. A better idea might be to visit this new destination. You may become calmer and more relaxed with every breath you breathe in, and every breath you breathe out. New and exciting ideas will pop into the forefront of your mind, and if you psychoanalyze – you’ll just trance deeper. Very important message: The more energy you have The more energy you will be able to give Don’t forget, this is BRAIN EXERCISE. You exercise your brain and it gets stronger. The stronger your brain is, the more efficiently it runs, the more efficiently it runs, the more it can process with half the effort, and the more your brain can handle, the easier life becomes. Your brain learns to easily categorize all of your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It’s your job to manage the brain. And one of the things you can love about your brain is that it archives all the information you need access to, in the specific order, which works FOR you. So keep that plane flying and find out the new and exiting things your destinations have in store for YOU!

Sixth Principle: Just Do It

Go ahead and say, “That’s right.” That’s right, and you can tell yourself that is right. Give yourself permission to do it, go in with a YES attitude, and accept whatever way works best for you.

Seventh principle: There Are No Principles There is no right or wrong way to Trance Phenomena. If the script suggests that you ride on a hot air balloon and you want to ride on a giant peach, then simply tell yourself you are on a giant peach. You can move your hands in Trance, give yourself suggestions, see other objects, persons, symbols, or experience new sensations. Some people have trouble making images in their mind, so look at colors, shapes, patterns and use your brain to work those colors, shapes, and patterns into something that works right for you. You may not go deeply into trance. This is all good, and the more you practice the easier it becomes, until one day you are sitting there daydreaming a new rush of energy.

Maybe somebody will piss you off, but you find yourself handling the situation differently. Things that once embarrassed you may cease to exist. Things that once scared you may not remember where they’ve gone.

Trance is fun when you always remember the three golden rules:

1. You are a great hypnotic subject 2. You can change easily and timely 3. You are totally resourceful

Chapter 2- I’m Talking To You

People often wonder, “Can negative self talk be changed??” Sure, better yet, why not turn self-talk up and down, on and off? Sometimes negative self-talk can be helpful. If you are going to jump off a building because you think you can fly… then it may be a good idea to say, “Wait a minute, I should be having some sort of an I CAN’T do it attitude!!”

Neuro-Linguistic Programmers know that you can play with self-talk. You can turn the volume up, or you can turn the volume down, and it is definitely worth the try next time you crush your own dreams.

When you find yourself thinking something negative, take a volume knob, instill it in your brain and turn the volume down (or OFF completely). Do it now… while you read imagine a volume knob turning your reading voice down really quiet. Now do the opposite and turn that reading voice UP, and keep on turning your reading voice up until you get that high pitched flat lined heart rate monitor sound… NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA…. and then turn the volume back to normal. NLP‘ers seem to like to play with these voices in our heads, as should YOU. If you hear something you like, crank the volume, and if it sucks, turn it off or change the channel. But what if the voices take over and your mind becomes too chaotic?? When the voices become detrimental to your well being, it is important to stop and just say to yourself, “What do you guys want??” Honestly-- if you ask… the voices will toss out an answer for you. They might want you to be happy, or they want to protect you… or maybe they want to kill you. Excellent, the truth is out in the open. Now we are on a mission to find out the positive intention that will align our thoughts, with our actions. And we’ll accomplish this goal by using a term known as “chunking.” Chunking: A term referring to the process of taking individual units of information (chunks) and grouping them into units. Probably the most common example of chunking occurs in phone numbers. For example, a phone number sequence of 4-7-1-1-3-2-4 would be chunked into 471-1324.

In my example… we will use chunking to elicit a values structure to reveal the positive intention behind all the shit that holds you back.

In my example we found out that negative self-talk wants us dead. But maybe your voices are right now saying, “This guy is crazy, I want you to be alive!” Yippee, now go ahead and ask those voices (you might want to get a pen & paper), “If I were dead (or alive) fully and completely; dead (or alive) inside my every cell and pore, and dead (or alive) inside every fiber of my being, what even greater would that give me?? Take a second to answer that question to yourself… My example voices are coming up with, “Protection.” Now we say, “Excellent, and if I had (protection) fully and completely; (protection) inside my every cell and pore. And (protection) inside every fiber of my being, what even greater would that give me??” My example voices respond, “Authority,” and as we continue, “chunking” my example voices start scratching their heads for an answer. Watch out, if they think too long random stuff will fly out for the next couple seconds: honesty, protection, hope, prestige, happiness, gratitude–PEACE, integrity, leadership, PEACE.

HOLD UP, The purpose of chunking is to find the positive intention of our thoughts and actions. Because humans have learned to find good in everything, and once you find good in you, we’ll go looking for great.

According to my NLP trainers, and based on the centuries old study of humanity, and after practice… chunking should lead us to ONE of FIVE root values:

LOVE,

PEACE,

ONENESS,

BEING-OK,

FREEDOM.

Now suggesting every single human on the planet chunks up to ONE of FIVE root values is great time for to start an argument. Hitler wanted Oneness?? Doubtful, but he might have desired freedom?? I’m not sure, but I am sure that people like myself can find any exception to any rule … however; I truly believe that all humans desire good, and these five values definitely top the hierarchy of feeling great.

In this exercise we’ve learned that self-talk wanted us dead. Then we chunked that up to Protection, Authority, and finally we discovered that suicidal self-talk actually wanted PEACE (go figure). And most times our sickest thoughts have the highest opposing GOOD intention for us. A great leader once told me, “If you’re not sure what you value, then how will you know how to get what you want??” There is no hard written rule about values, but in my experience, great leaders know what they value, and really great leaders constantly define their values. Now I think the rule of thumb is to choose five values you would rank in order of hierarchy. Remember, the first value is your core value, the other four values can be determined by the values that you think about the most, the values you need, or by the values that pack the most weight to you. A broke person might move MONEY to the second rung of their value system, and then they have to ask, “How much money?” to which you would unconsciously start looking for better ways to make more money. I remember when an old ankle injury was acting up, I asked its positive intention. My ankle told me I was neglecting a major stomachache. As soon as I acknowledged my stomachache, my ankle stopped hurting? I said to my stomach, “I accept this pain fully and completely, pain in every pore of my stomach, and pain in every fiber of my stomach… now what even greater does that give me?? By going through the steps of chunking I created a conscious direct link between my pain, and my root core value—LOVE. And believe it or not, by acknowledging my stomach pains positive intention…LOVE, my ulcer was cured in about 5 days (the length of time it takes your stomach to grow a new lining). Now if I live life to love, loving myself, and the world that surrounds me, then I can make decisions confidently, and I can respect your every crazy emotional disaster… because I love, wholly and completely. The main point I am getting at is that if I were to love wholly and completely, and if my dominant core value is LOVE, then I can logically assume the root of all my evil is LOVE.

ONCE my demons admit to LOVE… they’re screwed!! Luckily I’ve spent a lot of time talking to my demons, and I know demons can be extremely manipulative. Substance, guilt, anger, boredom, and fear demons can sabotage you– they’ll bring you down to grotesque self-punishment, and still win the battle. And demons are so good they’ll make you think you are doing all these hurtful actions out of love! Unless you become the leader of your thoughts. I remember the time I assembled a round table of self-talk voices- in my head. The voices swiveled, and leaned in the big leather chairs chattering nonsense when I said, “Listen up guys. What’s important is that we come to an agreement. You serve a purpose, and so do I. And my purpose is to make sure we work together as a team!” I’ve heard stories of other people imagining Mr. Critical talking like Donald Duck, teacher-annoying looking like Scooby-do, and sorry dad… you’re looking like a monkey. It’s not even a dinner party anymore. It turned into a circus with flying trapeze twins and an overgrown elephant taking a poo at the dinner table. Now you can turn that dinner party into whatever you have to do in order to make you smile, chuckle, or even laugh about the truth of it all. Today I fill huge stadiums with all the voices in my mind... and they are all there to listen to ME! The mind is a powerful drug… and before we go on, our superiors want us to do a mini exercise- and you will be tested later, big test, lots of memorization, scary language. - Close your eyes.

- Take a few deep breaths to relax.

- Now just listen to yourself thinking. Can you HEAR words? What are they saying? Is it one voice or several voices?

- Can you make your mind up? SEE if you can. (When ready, open your eyes and think about what you experienced.)

If your mind is like my mind, then you know what mind chatter is, especially when you are just an observer. It reminds me of being in a classroom, everybody is behaving when the teacher is watching, but when the teacher steps out, the kids go nuts just to see how much “stuff,” they can get away with.

♥ Interesting tip: NLP’ers have discovered that people who suffer from anxiety think really fast. Their thoughts are playing in fast-forward, and the more they think the more anxious they get. It is very beneficial for a person with anxiety to take a few breaths, and slow down their thinking. Monitor your thoughts, and watch your thoughts produce the results you are looking for.

Now how can we utilize self-talk?? By talking ourselves into, and out of things. You can watch smokers talk themselves into smoking all the time, and a good smoking addiction can be a sneaky bugger. I’ve seen a guy stop smoking for two years, then suddenly his parent died, his wife left him for his brother, there was a ton of stress at work, he was broke… and smoking again.

Of course my friend realized smoking didn’t help, but it was just too hard to quit, because… {The list of reasons went here!} Followed by, “I’m just addicted.” Now let’s just stop, and say to yourself, “What if the word addiction didn’t exist??” That’s right, take addiction out of the dictionary because if you ask me, we are “brainwashed,” into believing that addiction is complicated. Addicts are brainwashed to believe they cannot help themselves, rehab works, AA/NA is healthy, and that being born again Christian deletes who you once were. Excellent, except you could also be addicted to greatness, if you allowed it. A smokers mind might trick them to believe they desire nicotine, but they could also trick their mind to desire other things… like having vacation money, and six pack abs. I would challenge every addict to find new things to obsess about, like a cool job, having willpower, money, and muscles. They say a good recovery includes setting milestones for other parts of your life… like fitness. A full recovery is reaching those milestones, and setting even bigger ones. But hold up, what does this have to do with self-talk?? Well you have to talk yourself into getting started on that next milestone!

Make an image of yourself in your minds eye, and in a moment you’ll tweak that image to portray the greatest version of you. Take your time… read a little slower… make that image of the perfect you, clearer, brighter, healthier, funnier, and more resourceful than ever. Add more confidence, better posture, charm, imagine a healing light around you, and take a moment to let that healing light wash through you. Excellent, now think of a future event (one year from today), and imagine pointing a finger in the direction of where the future event is… now imagine looking into the future and pushing the image of the better you, filled with new values, off into the future… hopefully that image is pretty fabulous because you’re pushing it forward in time until you are at just the right distance to STOP. That’s about right, now plug that image into your future timeline… and see if you can feel new energy connecting that future image, to now. Congratulations… these little mind tricks are great ways to set new goals! Naturally everybody thinks the hard part is forgetting about old ways. I say, “It’s easy to forget old ways when you take up new challenges.” By the way; some people hate it when somebody makes life easy and fun, but whether they want to prove you wrong or not— they need you, because you give them HOPE, but only if YOU reach your goals. I’d like to help you start programming clearer goals. You can start the process now by finishing the following sentence. I want more_______, and I want _____, and I want ______, and now, while you read, go ahead and secretly dream about things you secretly desire. The eminent social psychologist and hypnosis researcher Theodore Sarbin considers imagining being the central importance to the understanding of human behavior. He notes that this, too, is a process of symbolic self-interaction. Little children act from one make-believe fantasy to the next— being mommy and putting on makeup, to being a superhero taking down evil villains. It doesn’t take very long for parents, teachers, and peers to deliver the message, “Its only in your imagination.” We do not however, give up fantasizing. Instead, we fantasize in our heads. We daydream, zone out, and construct hypothetical situations and make-believe roles, visualizing how we would act in such and such a scenario. We merely do this in our mind, but some people are able to make their imagination real… HOW?? Simple, they ACT upon desires. Not something everybody can do, unless…
