WelcomeDear friends,
You will find a cardenclosed with thisedition of Quartet; do
please have a look at all the differentservices we are offering across our 4parishes this Christmas, and come andjoin us if you can.
I am writing as we are faced with yetanother strange new world reality - firstBrexit and now Donald Trump. Iwonder what other peculiar choiceshumanity is going to make before thisyear ends!
The most peculiar choice of all wouldbe to choose peace - in our homes, inour work lives, and most of all withinand between countries. Why do I saythat? Well, if you think about it, howmuch easier is it to argue with someone- especially when you think you are inthe right - than to let it go and be thebigger person?
But that is what Jesus - the Prince ofPeace - asks us to do at every level ofour lives. It is not weak not to start orrespond to an argument; in fact it ismore a sign of weakness to do so thanto say to yourself, 'This doesn't need toturn into an argument; let's find ways ofagreeing instead'. It's a much harderroute to walk, but it's the one that weneed to choose if we want a larger
peace throughout the world to mimicthe peace we try to bring to ourhomes.
So instead of picking a fight afteryou've had one too many at Christmasdinner, or responding to someone elsetrying to do so, why not take a momentand say to yourself, 'Is this really worthfighting over? What might it do to myrelationships? Would I rather bethought of as a peace-disturber or apeace-bringer?' Why not bring somepeace into your home this Christmas, and may the Prince of Peace himselfbe with you and yours.
Have a very blessed Advent and awonderfully joyful Christmas.

Closure of Public TelephoneKiosks
-----------------------------------------------
BT has advised us of its intention todisconnect the telephone lines in manypublic phone boxes in South Suffolk owingto a lack of use by the public. We have twokiosks in Stratford St Mary, one in Upper Stand the other in the Ipswich- bound lay-byon the A12 just outside the village.
Do residents have any opinion on whetherwe should ask BT to keep the telephonelines operational for possible future use inthe event of an emergency given theindifferent mobile phone coverageexperienced in the past throughout theDedham Vale or should we simply agree tohaving the phone lines disconnected?Would anyone like to see the phone boxestaken over by the community for alternativeuse or simply have them removedcompletely?
If you have any views on this please contactthe parish clerk by email [email protected] orattend our next council meeting on Monday14th November at the Institute Hall,HighamRoad commencing at 7.30pm when ourdecision on this issue will be made.

Who Can’t LoveFireworks
The skies began to darken and rainhovered in the air but the wind we hadworried about stayed away leaving themost muted gentle evening in its wake. But that peace wasn’t to last. The lightscame on at the entrance to the schoolplaying field and it was like walking intowonderland. Dramatic colours lit the treesand the atmosphere was tinged withexcitement as the children ran aroundwaving their light sabres and dancing inthe snow so cleverly provided by our hostsaround the band tent. Music floated on theair and the hot dogs and hot coffeesdeliciously held the cold at bay. Theanticipation was rising and suddenlySWISH! The first of the fireworks explodedinto the air. What followed was a glorious array ofdazzling colour, cracks and bangs as thedisplay unfolded, on and on to the sheerdelight of adults and children alike. Peoplehad come from near and far and theirooohs and aaahs were testament to thespectacular event playing out before oureyes. It was an evening that Stratford can betruly proud of, perfect in every way and ajoyous way to bring the communitytogether. Well done the SSM Crew!

out this month, it seemed cars weremended, (so wonderful Frinton goodies)gas fitters finished and other appointmentscomplete.
We had a stall full of bits and bobs left overfrom the book sale of November 5th, thesale itself raised £160 which was not quiteas good as previous sales. However, thebonfire and fireworks the same eveningwere the “talk of the town” as they say, quite spectacular and enjoyed by all.
Suffolk Phoenix Brass are performingagain this year with the Christmas concerton December 10th so posters, tickets andthe list for “Hamper raffle donations” wereall in evidence.
How speedily the year has gone, with ournext Fair Trade coffee morning being thelast of 2016. As usual it will be a “Festiveand Free” event on December 6th. It willbe lovely to have a full house again so dohope you can make it.
Many thanks for another year of supportfor Fair Trade.

Another Scam
Most of us get agitated by cold callingtelephone calls and do what we can to blockor avoid them. One such way is to registerwith the Telephone Preference Service(TPS). However, some criminal elementsare using that to defraud unsuspectingpeople. We have been made aware ofpeople being contacted by telephone bythose purporting to be from the TPS. Theywill either attempt to get you to 'sign up' tothe service, for which you will be told thereis a charge or that your TPS agreement isabout to expire and needs to be renewed. Both will require all your personal detailsand credit card details to be provided.BEWARE - THIS IS A SCAM! The TPS isa FREE service and anyone wishing toregister can find more details on theirwebsite at www.tpsonline.org.uk The TPSwill never contact you requiring paymentsor credit card details and once registeredthere is no further need to update it. If yoususpect you have been contacted by afraudulent organisation the advice is toreport it to Action Fraud athttp://www.actionfraud.police.uk

Raydon and District Gardening Club
Another garden club year passes whatseems oh so quickly yet again. I hope youas members and guests have enjoyedanother varied mix of gardens, monthlymeetings with all different subjects by guestspeakers from around Suffolk, coach outingto Woburn Abbey Gardens, and our annualCharity night which this year raised £222.00for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Thankyou all for supporting the garden club onceagain in our 36th year. By the time you readthese notes It will not be too long before weas gardeners start thinking Spring. If like meyou are busy preparing the ground i.e.digging the veggie plot, weeding flowerbeds, removing dead vegetation, re sitingsome plants or shrubs, and all before winterarrives with cold days , sharp frosts orperhaps snow. At the moment (mid Nov)there is still plenty of colour in the gardensdue partly to a fantastic autumn which wehave had for colour and warmth. So it’s resttime in December & January for bothgardens, and yourselves ready for the nextSpring which if on cue about 12/14 weeksaway. I accidentally dug up some daffodilbulbs the other day and their roots arealready quite long. (they start growing frommid August) and by the time you receive theJanuary copy of Quartet the earliest bredDutch types will almost be flowering.Your committee will be working hard toorganize another varied programme for2017 so if you members have a favouritegarden subject you would like please letyour committee know as soon as possibleso we can incorporate it into our thinking. Ifyou know a speaker as well that’s evenbetter. Also a big Thank You to all those memberswho support us by renewing membership
each year but are unable to attend eveningmeetings for whatever reason i.e. health, notable to drive at night or just getting older andneed to stay in the warm. Your contributionshelp this club stay successful for theenjoyment of other gardeners. Thank youalso everybody who helps in any other wayi.e. supplying raffle prizes, buying tickets, refreshments, washing up, clearing hall aftermeetings and much more.Advance notice The first meeting in our 37th
year will be Thursday 23rd February 2017.Have a well earned rest and I and yourcommittee all look forward to meeting you allagain for another new gardening year. If youare reading this but not a member why notcome along & join us, it`s a great communityvillage club that deserves your support, together we “GROW”.
Best wishes for Christmas & the New Year.

SPEEDING – HELP TO MAKERAYDON SAFER
It is a matter of extreme concern to yourParish Council that speeding traffic in thevillage is becoming more prevalent by theday - and statistics show an alarmingpicture.
Your Parish Council is determined to try toalleviate this problem and is considering anumber of speed detection devicessuitable for our road conditions andeffective as deterrents.Research has involved a lengthyconsultation with neighbouring parisheswho have already acquired suchequipment and operated it for some time.We can report that the most effectivemeans of curbing speeding, based on ourconsultation, appears to be CommunitySpeedwatch. Some parishes say that theresults have been conclusive - speedinghas been noticeably reduced.
However, this would require volunteers tooperate the equipment. Please contact meif you would be prepared to participate, should the PC decide to go ahead with thisinitiative – full training would be given. You can find out more about CommunitySpeedwatch by visiting:http://www.suffolk.police.uk/safetyadvice/roadsafety/knowthelaw/speeding/communityspeedwatch.aspx

With illustrations he showed thatmodern heart surgery is far less invasive andextremely effective, for example, by insertingstents to re-inflate collapsed blood vessels. He also talked about signs to look out for –including a feeling of indigestion afterexercise. We asked those present at this talk, and atour previous talk on diabetes, to suggestfuture topics. Suggestions so far include:dementia, healthy living/weight loss, men’shealth, women’s health (including dealingwith menopause), kidney problems, mentalhealth, dementia, stroke, asthma and CPR(resuscitation). If you have any othersuggestions please either email us [email protected] or you canuse one of the PPG comment cards in thewaiting rooms. We are alternating the venue for the talksbetween Capel St. Mary and East Bergholt. Please look out for notices on future talks invillage magazines, in the waiting rooms andon parish council notice boards.

It could be very useful for manypeople living in and around East Bergholt. The date and venue will be given inJanuary's edition. On a more general note, please note thatthe Community First Responders can ONLYrespond at the request of The East AnglianAmbulance Service. On Wednesday 9 NovemberAdrian Wright FRGS talked on “Earth onFire”. Hawaiian larva oozes continuouslywhile Krakatoa & Vesuvius have been ~dormant for decades - sometimescenturies- between cataclysmic events. This illustrative talk examined volcanicvariety, exploring reasons for suchdiversity.Whilst we do not have a speaker meetingin December our popular Christmas Lunchwill take place on Wednesday 7thDecember in the Constable Hall. On Wednesday 11th January Dr GeoffreyKay, former lecturer at Norwich School ofArt & Anglia Ruskin University, will speakon ‘Drugs, Sex & Death” – the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In mid-19thcentury a group of young artists began tosign their work with the initials PRB; for ashort time gallery visitors baffled. Whatwas it that united these artists and how didthey determine the course of British art forthe next 50 years?

Kenny’s SESAW News
Here we are again, at the end of anotheryear, approaching another festive season.Apologies for my unenthusiastic intro butlike everyone at SESAW, my little heart isvery heavy just now. It's difficult to becheery as Mum’s dear husband, Ron,passed away recently. The two of themstarted animal rescue decades ago, righthere in their own home. My canine pals,Barney, Daisy and Tyler were Dad'sconstant companions and nearly asinconsolable as Mum but everyone hasbeen very kind. SESAW is closed, exceptby prior appointment and the wonderfulVolunteers are working hard to keep theSanctuary running as smoothly as possible.
We are grateful to all our supporters, bothat this sad time and throughout the year.Without all these good people, SESAWcould not exist. Despite our sorrow, animals in need continue to arrive. If youare looking for a family pet or companion toshare your hearth please get in touch andsomeone will contact you as soon aspossible. Meanwhile, best wishes for ahappy, healthy and safe Christmas fromme, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.
