    Ive been really impressed with

    Strathclydes technological

    learning environment and it has

helped me a lot. Im particularly fond

of the library, which has recently been

    refurbished and now has computers

on every level as well as discussion

zones, private study areas and wi-fi.

Staff are always on hand to help if

youre researching a specific subject. The Language Centre is a great facility

for brushing up on your knowledge

    and watching films.

    Glasgow is big, bright, vibrant,

    and diverse. The University is

right in the heart of the city

centre so if museums, culture or

    shopping are your thing, Glasgow

has it all. I love sport so the fact

that the city is hosting the 2014

Commonwealth Games is a big plus

for me. There are amazing venues

that are open to the public. Implanning to visit the Emirates Arena

    and try out the state-of-the-art

    velodrome and running track.

Its so easy to make friends at

    Strathclyde and all the activities

    that are organised during Freshers

Week help a lot. Im a big fan of

the Union where Ive met so many

    interesting new people from different

walks of life. There are lots of events

going on and all sorts of clubs and

societies to get involved in. I take

part in the Entrepreneurs Societyand its a great way to have a laugh

while learning new skills that help

    me with my course.

chemical engineering acilities, laser and photonics

    acilities and multimedia language labs

    campus-wide wireless Internet access, numerous

computer labs and Internet connections in all

    student residences

SemestersTeaching takes place over two 12-week semesters, each

ollowed by a revision and examination period. There is

normally a two-week break at Christmas and at the start

o April, and the academic year ends in early June.

Note: Because o external requirements, certain coursesin the Faculty o Humanities & Social Sciences do not

    ollow the semester system.

CreditsThe University operates a uniorm credit-based modular

course system. The standard curriculum normally

comprises six 20-credit classes per year, usually including

certain compulsory classes and a proportion o electives.

Students are normally expected to undertake 120 credits

a year, which equates to 1,200 hours o study over the

30-week academic year, or roughly 40 hours per week. You choose the classes most suited to your interests and

ambitions (within the requirements o specific degrees

and constraints o timetabling). This means that, subject to

approval, you may be able to change rom one course to

another, provided the new programme can accept, at least

in part, the credits already gained.

AssessmentYour academic perormance is assessed by University

teaching staff, with external examiners checking and

validating the marks awarded. The University pays

close attention to first-year students, offering learning

support and practical advice to help them improve study

skills and manage their workload. In most courses,

degree exams provide the main evidence or decisions

regarding progress. The main exam diet is h eld each yearin May/June and in August (or resits). Some courses also

have an additional diet in January to assess first-

semester classes. Degree exams are usually o two

or three hours duration and can involve solving

problems, writing essays and/or completing multiple-

    choice answer tests.

Some classes are assessed solely on the basis o

coursework marks given or essays, worked examples,

laboratory exercises and reports throughout the year

provide a coursework mark. Generally, however, finalexam and coursework marks are combined in varying

proportions in assessing your perormance. Some

courses require you to undertake a research project

working individually and/or in groups, you will carry

out library research, laboratory exercises or fieldwork,

and present a report on the project.

What is Biochemistry?Biochemistry is the study o the composition,

metabolism and unction o biological systems

at the molecular level. Biochemistry, and

the related field molecular biology, provideimportant advances into understanding the

molecular basis o lie, and how alteration ordisruption o these molecular pathways leads

    to disease processes.

What is Immunology?Immunology is the study o how the body

deends itsel against disease. This not only

includes deence against bacteria, parasitesor viruses, but also the elimination o cancer

and processes like inlammation and wound

healing. It also helps us understand how the

immune system is misdirected into attacking

the bodys own tissue, leading to diseases like

    rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, or allergy.

What is Microbiology?Microbiology is the study o the smallest living

    organisms (micro-organisms or microbes),

which include viruses, bacteria, ungi, algae

and protozoa. Microbes are a major cause o

disease in humans but they can also be useul in

industrial processes rom pollution control to theproduction o important therapeutic compounds.

What is Pharmacology?Pharmacology is the study o how drugs and

other chemicals affect the unctions o the

body in health and disease. As a discipline it

underpins the development o new or improved

    medicines within the pharmaceutical industry

and the treatment o disease within the

    healthcare sector.

BSc (Honours) Biomedical Science(accredited by the Institute of

    Biomedical Science)

This course offers a more general broad-based

I chose Strathclyde or its central location

in Glasgow and its reputation in thebiological sciences. My lecturers are great

and the campus is easy to get around.

    From gaining laboratory experience,

meeting new people, going to social

    events not orgetting the Students

    Union studying here has definitely

    exceeded my expectations.

My course puts real emphasis on the

practical skills that employers look or

rom graduates in the biological sciences.

Its a great starting point, as I hope to

    work in a laboratory-based research

    environment when I graduate.

    I would recommend the University

Careers Service. The advisors take time

The Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry is a

vibrant mix of enthusiastic students and talented

researchers from across the globe. Our respected degree

courses not only cover chemistry in its classical form,

but also specialist applications of the science, unique

    in Scotland and the UK.

    trathclyde has built an enviable

    reputation or teaching chemistry

    by developing an individual

approach to the types o degree

it offers and the research it

undertakes. The key element o this approach is

that we embrace both pure and applied chemistry

to give our students the maximum lexibilitywhen it comes to choosing an area o chemistry

to study and a career path afer graduation. You

will be taught by leading chemists and orensic

experts who are active in research and engaged

in international collaborations and casework. Our

students have a strong record o winning nationaland international awards, and o securing highly

    rewarding careers.

Pure chemistry is about unravelling themysteries o molecular structure and reactivity.

Biology and physics blend naturally with chemistry

and extend its scientific reach, rom reactions

within microscopic organisms to those in exploding

stars in the outer reaches o the universe. Students

o chemistry seek to understand the structures,

properties and interactivity o molecules. This

leads to revelations as to why things happen, b eit a gaseous geyser on the surace o Mars or an

accidental explosion in a uel depot. Chemists

become creators o new molecules, inventors o

new reactions and materials, and guardians o our

    planetary environment.

Applied chemistry is the use o chemical

knowledge to respond to the specific

challenges generated by society, or example:

Forensic chemists help solve crime andunderpin a scientifically-based standard

    o justice

    Medicinal chemists seek to invent

    pharmacologically-active molecules that will

Sbe effective against inections and diseases

    such as cancer

    Environmental and analytical chemists

    police society and industry, monitoring

pollution levels and alerting us to long-term

risks to the ecosystem Chemical technologists satisy our

demand or uels, new materials andlarge-scale production, covering a range

    o consumer items

    Cosmetic chemists create sae skin

    treatments, colourings and ragrances

    or the global, multimillion pound

    cosmetic industry

    Proessional Accreditations

All our MChem, MSci and BSc courses areaccredited by the Royal Society o Chemistry.

Graduates are eligible to apply or the status

    o Chartered Chemist, the qualification

recognised in the EU or proessional chemists.

In addition, the MSci Applied Chemistry

& Chemical Engineering is accredited by the

Institution o Chemical Engineers, the MChem

Forensic & Analytical Chemistry is accredited bythe Forensic Science Society, and the MChem

Chemistry with Teaching is accredited by the

    General Teaching Council (Scotland).

    Such prestigious double accreditations are

    rare among UK chemistry degrees.

    Choice and Flexibility in Chemistry

Our range o courses gives you maximumchoice and lexibility. The classic MChem

Chemistry degree is recommended or thosewho want a complete coverage o the subject

in order to keep a ull range o career options

open, while the specialised courses give you

the option o making a career choice rom an

    www.strath.ac.uk/chemistry

early stage. In addition, it is possible to switchbetween the different chemistry degrees within

the first three years, and all the BSc schemes

are accessible rom any o the MChem/MSci

    courses afer entry.

    MChem & MSci: These are high-level five-yearcourses which normally include a 12-month

assessed and salaried industrial placement inYear 4. Their ull proessional accreditation is an

excellent basis or a career in an application ochemistry, either in the UK or abroad.

BSc (Honours):These traditional our-yeardegrees with proessional accreditation are

recommended i you want sound scientific

training, a high degree o numeracy and ameasure o personal development which would

be applicable or a range o careers in both

    chemistry and other sectors.

Industrial PlacementOur 12-month Industrial Placement Scheme is

one o the longest-running and largest such

schemes in the UK. We aim to place all ourMChem students according to their subject

specialisation and interest, either locally, within the UK, Europe or even urther afield.

You will be paid a competitive wage while

on placement, and the industrial experience

gained is an excellent basis or making career

    decisions. Industry values the additional

experience and maturity that a placement

provides and Strathclyde graduates are much

    in demand or this reason.

International ExperienceYou can complete one year o your degree

studying in a selected European university.

As well as gaining an in-depth knowledge o

the practice o chemistry in another country,

you have the opportunity to become luent in

a second language, ofen the key to suitable

    employment opportunities in Europe.

Bursary SupportAstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline, two o the

    worlds leading pharmaceutical companies,

offer a bursary scheme or undergraduates

in chemistry. This scheme, which is normally

based on your school, provides students

with 500 a year or the length o the course.

It also offers additional benefits, such aspossible mentoring and work experience. Other

opportunities include the Procter & Gamble

bursary, which offers 1,000 a year and a

    one-year industrial placement.

CareersAn advanced knowledge o chemistryis required in so many scientific and

technological areas that there is a continuousdemand or good chemistry graduates. Our

graduates compete very successully or jobs

in all branches o the chemical industry as a

result o their recognised expertise in all the

significant areas o the science. These are well-

rewarded careers and usually provide plenty o

scope or advancement into supervisory and

management roles. The chances o employment are increased

substantially by the industrial placement and

training in communication and other industry-

    related skills.

It is not so well known that there are

also major opportunities or chemists in

other areas. A study o chemistry helps the

development o logical thought and numericskills, and the ability to write accurate and

concise reports. As a result, our chemists arein demand or employment in national and

local government services, in hospitals and

in education at all levels. Other employers

o our graduates over recent years have

In the 2012 and 2013 Guardian

University Guide, StrathclydeChemistry was ranked topin Scotland on the basis ostudent satisaction withteaching and satisaction withthe course.

protection becomes more widely known and

    appreciated. Inspirational teachers convey

the exciting challenges chemists ace, and thenecessity o continued discovery or the quality

o our lives. Strathclyde is acknowledging the

crucial importance o chemistry teachers by

providing this undergraduate degree at a level

higher than is available anywhere else in the UK.

    The degree combines an RSC-accredited

MChem Chemistry course with a proessionally-

    accredited teacher training component

(equivalent to a Proessional GraduateDiploma in Education) that is taken during

the ourth year. The dual accreditation means

that as a graduate o this course, you will be

able to choose and move between careers

in secondary education and the chemical

    industry. Uniquely, the final-year research

project can be concerned with educational

approaches to chemistry, such as thedevelopment o practical experiments or

    use in schools.

Please see pg 86 or urther inormation

MChem Forensic & Analytical Chemistry(in collaboration with the Centre for

    Forensic Science)

Forensic and analytical chemists romStrathclyde are highly respected throughout

the world or their abilities in this high profile

and proessionally demanding area o applied

chemistry. Scientific acts are needed to

    decide environmental responsibilities and

questions o criminal guilt or innocence airly

and accurately. The major challenges acing our

graduates are to detect, collect, analyse and

characterise the smallest traces o DNA, blood, fibre, explosive residue, pollutant or drug, and

then to impartially assess the significance to

    the issue being investigated.

They may also have to appear in court or

scientific meetings to justiy techniques and

findings to the public satisaction. Staff in our

Centre or Forensic Science are ofen called as

expert witnesses in court and advise the orensic

services in other countries, ensuring yourteaching is ounded upon the latest technological

advances and the highest possible standards.

    The course has dual proessional

accreditation rom the Royal Society o

Chemistry and the Forensic Science Society,

making it unique in the UK.

The skills o analytical chemists are

also increasingly in demand or c heckingthe quality o our ood and water, protecting

    the environment and monitoring industrial

    materials and processes. Another emerging

area is the restoration o artworks and

historical arteacts, proving that the career

    opportunities or a well-trained analytical

chemist are both wide and interesting.

The industrial placement is concerned with

the practice o analytical or orensic chemistryin commercial or judicial contexts.

    Classes include Radiochemistry,

    Multivariate Analysis, Atomic Spectrometry,

Toxicology and Alcohol, Fires and Explosives,

Analysis o Trace Evidence, and DNA Profiling

and Serology. Also included are courses on the

    legal aspect
