History of the Strawberry

Did you know the Strawberry is over 2,200 years old? While is it probably much older, the first

recorded history of this heart-shaped fruit dates back to ancient Rome. This tasty fruit grew wild

along the Italian peninsula and was enjoyed by Roman citizens ranging from every day citizens

to great Emperors. However, in 1588, the early colonists discovered the strawberry in Virginia.

In addition, the colonists living further north in places like Massachusetts also enjoyed early

strawberries. They were given to the colonists by local American Indians as a sign of friendship.

As the population spread west, they brought the strawberry with them. It was soon available in

many parts of the New World.

In addition to explorers and settlers

helping to distribute the strawberry to the

west coast, birds also played a role. You

see, when birds eat wild berries the seeds

pass through the bird intact. Thus, the

seeds are distributed throughout the

countryside naturally.

However, it wasn’t until the strawberry

reached the futile soils of California until it really took off as a viable fruit crop. The reason is

the favorable climate of the Pacific Ocean.

Today, California is the #1 strawberry growing State in the entire Union. Over 25,000 acres of

strawberries are planted each and every. Since each acre produces approximately 21 tons of

strawberries annually, this translates into over a billion pounds of fresh produce each and every

year from California. No worry, the Sunshine State produces over 80% of all strawberries in the

United States.

Why the Strawberry is Called a Strawberry?

While we may not know the precise reason why this fruit is called a strawberry, these are the two

top contenders.

1.  Straw is placed around the plant to help protect the growing plants. This helped to keep

the plants warm and protect them from soil erosion.

2.  The second legend is based in the Anglo-Saxon verb “to strew”. The runners of the

strawberry spread from the plant, thus over time the name of the fruit transpired from

streberie to straibery to finally the English translations of “strawberry”

While we may never know where the original name of this fruit came from, it only adds to the

magical presence and appearance of the strawberry.

Variety and Shapes of the Strawberry

There are 600 different varieties of strawberries available. A walk through the tents and booth at your

local farmers markets will reveal the many different types. As a rule of thumb, the larger the strawberry

the more water it contains and the smaller the berry, the more flavor it will deliver.

So let’s take a closer look at the more popular varieties of this heart-shaped fruit.

Albion: These are darker in color and sweeter than other strawberry varieties.

Allstar: These are generally more pale in color. These are the best variety to slice and enjoy in

fruit salads since they are plum, firm and have plenty of sweetness.

Earliglow: These are the early producing strawberries that are mid-size and full of flavor. This

variety are the most widely grown in the Midwest, Northeast and mid-Atlantic states.

Garden: These are the other popular and most recognized variety.

Hood: Named after the capital of Oregon. These are grown in the Hood area of Oregon.

Sweet Charlie: These are reddish-orange on the outside and have white and orange on the

inside.

Ventana: A bright red interior and is of standard strawberry shape and size.

Strawberries come in all sizes and shapes. In addition to the many different varieties the also come in

many different shapes. Rather than trying to explain the visual representation of the different shapes, its

better to simply show you the most popular. This is a visual representation from the University of

What is an Antioxidant?

An antioxidant may be defined as various substances including but not limited to (beta-carotene,

melatonin and Vitamin C). These may inhibit oxidation promoted by oxygen and antioxidants

may help protect the body from the effects of damaging free radicals.

A number of studies have repeatedly shown that maintaining high levels of antioxidants may

help to maintain a healthy body. What exactly is a free radical?

Free radicals can be defined as unstable molecules that have lost an oxygen molecule. Basically,

these unsteady molecules steal oxygen molecules from healthy cells. A real world example of the

affects of free radicals on healthy cells is the actual browning of a freshly cut apple or potato.

If you have ever noticed that after you cut an apple or a potato, the freshly cut potato or apple

starts to turn brown. What you are witnessing are the affects of free radicals on healthy cells.

Some people like to call this exposure “cellular rust”. This “rusting” of the healthy cells may be

similar to what occurs in the body. Antioxidants help the body to fight these free radicals. In

addition, you may have also heard the term ORAC?

The ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capability) measures the total antioxidant value

of different foods that are measured. The ORAC value indicates how many free radicals a

specific food can absorb and deactivate. So the higher the ORAC value, the more free radicals a

food can absorb. The higher the score, the better.

According to some nutrition experts, it is estimated the body to consumption of 3,000 to 5,000

ORAC units daily to reach significant oxygen capacity in the blood. These levels helps the body

to realize the ORAC benefits in food.

Health Benefits of the Strawberry While the Strawberry offers a number of natural health benefits what is most fascinating is the

recently published research indicating how the Strawberry can help with obesity.* While

research is still ongoing, the initial findings are exciting.

Naturally Boost Your Immune System*

This heart-shaped fruit is a natural source of vitamin C. Just one serving of strawberries delivers

51 mg of vitamin C, which is about ½ of your daily recommended allowance. If you decide to

enjoy a full cup mixed in with some yogurt or your morning cereal, you’ll be able to enjoy 100%

of your daily vitamin C intake. This vitamin is a well-known way to boost your immune system.

Promote Healthy Eyes*

Did you know that the antioxidant properties help to fight cataract? Cataracts is the clouding of

the lens over the eye lens. Again, the presence of the powerful vitamin C is the reason for

promoting eye health. It helps to strengthen the cornea and the retina .

Promotes a Healthy Cardiovascular System*

The ellagic acid and other flavonoids help to provide a powerful benefit to promoting a healthy

cardiovascular system. The presence of these phytochemicals helps to counteract the negative

effect of LDL cholesterol in the blood which could lead to unhealthy buildup of plaque in the

arteries. In addition, the strawberry offers a natural anti-inflammatory effect, which is good for

the heart, too.

Promotes Healthy Blood Pressure Mental Attitude*

The presence of potassium is another heart healthy benefit of this unique fruit. Just one serving,

½ cup, delivers 134 mg of potassium. This is vital to help regulate healthy blood pressure and

could even help to lower blood pressure by counteracting the negative effects of sodium on the

system.
