For live event streams, Akamais innovative in-the-cloud stream packaging

technology cuts the number of live stream encoders required by 50% or

more, since only a single encoder providing the widely supported RTMP

stream format is needed. Without Stream Packaging, additional encod-

ers would be required to generate separate streams for each supported

device format.

content Preparation and Storage Savings for On demand content

Stream Packaging for VoD content significantly reduces origin storage

capacity requirements, file preparation, and title management effort by

50% or more. A single .mp4 file is provided to the Sola Vision Platform,

and the HLS, HDS, or FLV streams are created in real time for delivery as

needed. The reduced preparation effort also minimizes the time required

to offer new content to your audience.

Digital Video Recorder (DVR) control capabilities, such as pause, rewind, and fast forward are available for both on-demand and live events when Stream Packaging is coupled with Sola Spheres cloud-based storage product, NetStorage. In addition, live content can be rapidly made avail-

able for on-demand viewing after the live event is over.

configuration Simplicity

Users have two options for configuring Stream Packaging capabilities.

For Manual configuration, the Luna Control Center, a web-based user

interface which provides configuration access to all Akamai products,

provides a simple user interface for setting all of the relevant parameters

for successful multi-platform streaming. For customers wishing to con-

figure Stream Packaging from their own content management systems

or custom user interfaces, a set of RESTful APIs is provided. In addition,

Stream Packaging provides a set of statistics that allow you to gain the

necessary perspective on product performance and use.

Availability through redundancy

Stream Packaging Live supports automatic switching between

redundant ingest streams, for protection against encoder or ingest

path failures. Stream Packaging VoD can pull content from primary and

backup source file locations in NetStorage.

future Proof

As emerging protocols protocols such as MPEG-DASH become impor-

tant for your streaming needs, your source content does not need to

change. When new protocols are added to Stream Packaging, a simple

configuration option selection in the Luna Control Center can enable

support for that protocol.
