Streamlight’s TLR4 By: Sal Palma Not too long ago shooters had to learn a new technique to hold a flashlight while supporting their strong hand. We then started putting rails on pistols, so we began hanging these behemoth monstrosities called weapon mounted lights on our handguns. In the processes, we discovered that you couldn’t find a holster that would fit the gun so we kept removing and reinstalling the lights. Our thinking then evolved from large frame pistols, which could support the rather large and cumbersome weapon lights, to compact and subcompact sidearms with smaller frames and smaller Picatinny rails. We mounted our behemoth lights on them, only to find that rail space was inadequate to properly install the light. We then realized that what was needed is a “truly” compact weapon mounted light. Although intuitive it was not imminent until Streamlight introduced the TLR3 at Shot Show 2009. With the introduction of the TLR3, Streamlight addressed an urgent need for a durable and reliable weapon mounted tactical light to complement the cornucopia of compact and subcompact firearms setting the market on fire. The TLR3 proved to be a highly successful addition to Streamlight’s TLR line and a companion to its wildly successful and larger TLR1. However, if you needed a laser aiming module, you had no choice but to leave Streamlight or settle on their TLR2, which was a full sized weapon mounted light with an integrated laser aiming module. Prayers were answered with Streamlight’s 2012 announcement launching the TLR4 - a compact weapon mounted light with an integrated laser aiming module.
