Tips for Online Job Hunting

If you’re out of work, and it’s been awhile since your last job search, get ready to make some changes in your process. Marketing yourself digitally has become

much more important than it was just a few years ago. In particular, pay attention to these three major areas of online job hunting:

1. You’ll want to carefully manage your cyber footprint, since more than 80 percent of executive recruiters now use search engines to investigate job candidates. In other words, when you Google your name, what pops up? Is it what you want a potential employer to see?

2. The rules have changed since the days of mailing out your resume on tasteful ivory paper. Today, you’ll need to post your resume online, optimizing it with keywords that call attention to your education, experience, and skills. Save your resume in several formats — Word (.doc or .docx), PDF (.pdf), and Text (.txt) — so you’ll be ready no matter what a potential employer requests.

3. Use social networking sites, online job boards, and job search tools to help. Listed below are some general job search sites to get you started.

www.job-hunt.org Extensive resources and articles on interviewing, resumes, finding jobs online, layoff help, networking groups, industry-specific advice, and more.

www.monster.com The “monster” of all job search sites goes beyond job postings and provides useful tools and advice.

www.simplyhired.com This site features searchable job postings, helpful tools, and key job market infor-mation for your location.

www.theworkbuzz.com A community for professionals to connect with other professionals, get advice, discuss industry news, and discover open positions not listed on job boards.

www.careermag.com Search open positions, or browse the extensive career resources to explore self-assessment, continuing education, resumes, or professional coaching.

How to Check Your Internet SpeedInternet connection speeds vary, as you’ve no doubt noticed while online. When you request information from a website, there are many paths it must cross before the information appears on your computer screen, and that information can only travel as fast as the slowest con-nection along the way.

To check your current connection speeds to the Internet, visit the site below and click on “Begin Test.” In seconds, the speedometer will move and you’ll get approximate down-load and upload speeds.

http://speedtest.kmtel.com/

Keep in mind that Internet speed variations are due to a variety of factors including location, network traffic, the number of people conducting the test simultaneously, or any number of hardware and/or software capabilities or limitations at the end-user machine.

For more information about possibly increasing your Internet speed with KMTelecom, please call 507-634-2511.

Where technology comes with a human touch

Backpack Safety is a Weighty IssueA new and disturbing trend is emerging. Today’s students are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous genera-tions and the use of overweight backpacks is a contributing factor. In fact, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that backpack-related injuries in children are steadily increasing — including strains, sprains, dislocations, and fractures.

As a parent, you can help prevent pain from backpack misuse:

• Makesureyourchild’sbackpackweighsno more than 10-15 percent of his/her body weight.

• Thebackpackshouldneverhangmorethan four inches below the waistline.

• Lookforabackpackwithwide, padded, and adjustable shoulder straps and a waist belt. Urge your child to always wear both shoulder straps to distribute the load evenly.

• Packheavieritemsclosesttothecenterofthe back.

• Althoughbackpacksonwheelshavesomeadvantages, they’re difficult to pull up stairs and roll through snow. They can also pres-ent a tripping hazard in crowded hallways.

If the weight of needed textbooks becomes problematic, ask the school if it’s possible for extra textbooks to be kept at home.
