Imagine you grow up in Chicago, the Windy City where the Hawk comes

out and takes over (so sayeth Lou Rawls) and you are a pretty good

athlete in high school and then you get sick and have to spend a couple

of months in bed. Your brother Joe is a better-than-average blues guitar

player; he throws a bass at you and tells you to figure out how to play it.

You do. You get healthy and leave sports behind. You get a job playing

bass behind Jimmy Dawkins, a Mississippi-born West Side Chicago

real deal bluesman. While backing up Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, he tells

you that you may be playing the bass but you really are a guitar player.

Respecting your elders, you switch and then get good, real good, while

playing with the legendary Jimmy Rogers. In the late 90s, you start

your first band, the Flip Tops and record your first album. You are

Nick Moss. Now it is almost two decades and a dozen albums later.

The Nick Moss Band is rooted in the blues but borrows from funk and

soul and rock and sometimes does a little sideways pony into jam band

land with the help of a singer whose family lineage includes Leadbelly.

There’s a steaming live album recorded a year ago at a huge blues

festival in German. And a brand new double CD titled From the Root to

the Fruit which traverses blues from the 40s to the sound of Chicago’s

Nick Moss Band right NOW!!! Dig It. You will NOT be disappointed.

In the Vinyl neck of the woods, we have a brand new one by Portland’s

Tango Alpha Tango, plus the LP components of the latest by Dan

Stuart and also Skating Polly as well as a release from Seattle’s Fly
