Welcome to the first edition of Phnom Penh StreetWise, the street directory with cred.

Written by expats who have lived here for many years, it is designed to give you the inside track on

the capitals tangle of streets, lanes and alleyways where the fragrance of jasmine mingles with the heady

aroma of family dinners and the hubbub of conversation is punctuated by bursts of laughter.

Whether youve put down roots here, just moved to Cambodia or youre simply passing through, this is your guide,

an invaluable compass that will help you navigate your way around the citys increasingly busy streets.

A decade or so ago the majority of the citys streets were little more than dirt tracks piled high with rubbish.

Not so today. New-mown grass lines many boulevards, flowerbeds add colour and variety, upmarket restaurants

punctuate lines of shophouse bars on Sisowath Quay overlooking the Tonle Sap and the first of a new generation

of skyscrapers dwarf the elegant townhouses and villas built by French colonialists in the 1900s.

As we embark on a new decade and celebrate our fifth anniversary as the most-read library of guides to the citys

bars, diners, shops and nightlife, we are in pole position to create Phnom Penhs first fully-indexed street map.

Working in association with Aruna Technology, Cambodias leading geomatics company,

Streetwise is the result of many months of planning, argument, research and discovery in our determination

to ensure our maps are not only easy to follow but also a practical guide to the capitals streets.

To complement the maps, our writers joined forces with Nathan Horton, one of the capitals foremost

commercial photographers, to give you a brief history of Phnom Penh and its street system, offer tips for

navigating and avoiding the inevitable traffic jams, talk you through selected areas and places of interest,

explain the rules of the road and summarise what the town planners have in store for the citys future.

It was a voyage of discovery for us and while we worked hard to make the information in this guide as

accurate as possible, inevitably there will be errors and omissions. So please let us know of anything
