• Lutheran Bismarck distrusted them especially the clergy for he believed that their 1st loyalty was to the pope instead of Germany
• Due to this Catholic threat he launched the KULTURKAMPH also known as “BATTLE FOR CIVILIZATION”
• Goal to make Catholics put loyalty to the state above allegiance to the church

German Social Democratic Party (SDP) was established in 1875 with the publication of its Gotha
programme.
Bismarck’s Saying
“Give the workingman the right to work as long as he is healthy, assure him care when he is sick, and
maintenance when he is old… then the socialists will sing their siren songs in vain, and the workingmen
will cease to throng to their banner.” Otto von Bismarck, quoted in Economic
Development of Europe (Ogg and Sharp)
By the 1890s Germans had:- health insurance
- accident insurance- old-age insurance
The system became the model for other European nationsStill, Workers did not abandon socialism
Known as“The Blessings of Old Age and Sickness Insurance [Der Segen der Alters- und Invalidenversicherung], this woodcut dates from about 1890, when Bismarck’s struggle to implement an even more comprehensive system of state insurance was drawing to a close with the end of his chancellorship.”
