Dear Colleagues:

It has long been believed that stress and psychologic status can influence many disorders, includingdiseases of the skin. For example, it is commonly believed that such disorders as acne, psoriasis and atopicdermatitis worsen with stress.

Recent work has uncovered anatomic, physiologic and functional relationships amongst cells, organs andtissues that support the possibility that the nervous system and psychologic state can influence cutaneousimmunity. In this regard, it has been demonstrated that cells important to the immune system, includingLangerhans cells and mast cells, are anatomically associated closely with nerves and that various signalsderived from nerves can influence their functions. Additionally, both peptide and non-peptide signalsderived from nerves, or that circulate through neuroendocrine mechanisms, have been shown to influenceimportant actors in the immune cascade including lymphocytes, dendritic cells and mast cells.Additionally, there is evidence that administration of nerve-derived factors in vivo can influence thedevelopment of immunity in intact animals.

Other exciting data demonstrate that stress can influence wound healing and repair of cutaneous barrierfunction after minor perturbation.

These observations demonstrate that this field, which might be termed “psychoneurocutaneous biology”, israpidly maturing. I invite you to explore this area in detail by attending a symposium on Stress and theSkin. Areas to be covered will include Stress, Neuromodulation and Cutaneous Immunity; Stress and SkinBarrier Function; Stress, Connective Tissue and Wound Healing and Stress and Skin Disorders. Twenty-sevenexperts in this area will provide lectures and attendees are invited to submit posters for presentation at themeeting. It is our hope that this symposium will allow individuals working in the area to freely exchangetheir latest data so that the field can move forward as rapidly as possible. Clinicians will also find thesymposium to be useful, educational and fascinating. The last section of the meeting will be devotedentirely to an examination of stress effects on cutaneous diseases and problems.

I anticipate that this meeting will serve as a preeminent scientific event in a venue that has much to offerthe attendee. I hope that you will accept our invitation to spend the weekend devoted the latestdevelopments in the area of stress effects on the skin while enjoying the many cultural, gastronomic andentertainment activities available in the Big Apple.

I look forward to seeing you in New York.

Sincerely,

Richard D. Granstein, M.D.Chairman, Local Organizing Committee
