Strike A PoseCiearra Everill is an
inspiring and lovely 14 year old who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2009. She started her first day of seventh grade bald but beautiful. Ciearra said, “I have found through this journey in my life that beauty is so much more than just what is on the outside. Beauty is the entire person inside and out. It does not matter what scars you have on the outside, or what clothes you wear, or what hair you have.” Ciearra has always loved America’s Next Top Model and has seen every episode. Her wish was to become a model herself. After she achieved a victorious remission in her illness, Make-A-Wish Foundation flew Ciearra and her family to New York City for a photo shoot with a renowned photographer from her favorite show. When they arrived he walked up to Ciearra and asked, “May I have this dance?” Her mom said, “she was a little shy at first and then she just blossomed.” Stunning photos were taken that day, and Ciearra looked relaxed and natural, as if she had been modeling all her life. She returned to her hotel with boxes of shoes, dresses and jewelry. Her photographer commented that “the strength

and determination of the many girls whom I have photographed for the Make-A-Wish Foundation has played a large part in redefining my idea of true beauty.” Box seats for the Broadway production of “Spiderman” capped a never-to-be-forgotten experience for Ciearra’s entire family. Her mom said, “This was a most amazing day for Ciearra. She felt like a real top model, and I know she hopes to get at least a toe in the door through this experience. She is a beautiful and strong-willed young lady and she accomplishes anything she puts her mind to. She is my ROCK and my HERO!” Ciearra told us that the next step in her journey is to make a difference in every life she touches. We are certain that she will do that - with both her beautiful smile and her indomitable strength.

Having celebrated our 25th Anniversary year in 2010 with much joy and celebration, we embarked on a new year of significant change as we entered our second quarter century. Change will, in fact, be the hallmark of our operations for the next year or so.
We are introducing two brand new events this season - Urban Challenge Utah in Salt Lake City and Wish100 in St. George. We initiated an outreach to areas of the state in which we are less well-known than the Wasatch Front, and we are developing volunteer groups in outlying areas through the support of a wonderful grant from Humana. This effort is one we will continue into the next decade. And we are emerging from the recession now, certainly not unscathed, but still standing and still strong.
Our board is full of new initiatives under the leadership of Kent Forsgren, and has begun a year-long search process for a new staff leader that will culminate this winter, when I retire after 26 years as the first and only chief executive in the Foundation’s history. This will be a change that will infuse new life and energy into the organization and herald perhaps the biggest public change since we moved into A Wishing Place in 2002.
Times of change are challenging, and perhaps unsettling, but they are also full of explosive hope and promise. Thank you all for joining us for our next quarter century of adventures in wishgranting, ensuring that the hope, strength, and joy of a wish will be available to a whole new generation of Utah children.

A Message From Our CEO
Christine Sharer helped start the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah with a handful of other volunteers 26 years ago. Since that time, she has led the organization into what it is today, one that has granted over 2,600 wishes of Utah children.
As Chriss looks to open a new chapter in her life, the Foundation looks to honor her. An endowment fund has been created in her name: Chriss’ Wishes. This endowment will ensure a wish is granted each year, in perpetuity, in Chriss’ honor.
We invite you to join us in honoring Chriss by making a contribution to Chriss’ Wishes. By making a donation, you will make a special tribute to an extraordinary woman, while helping to ensure the future wish granting efforts of the Foundation.
To make a gift, visit utah.wish.org/ways-to-help/chriss-wishes/ and download a pledge form or mail in your donation to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah Attn: Chriss’ Wishes, 771 East Winchester, Murray, Utah 84107.
Contact Katherine at [email protected] or 801-262-WISH if you have questions or would like to make your gift over the phone.

If you want to make an impact, but are worried about how far your dollar will go, you may want to consider the following options:
Wish Web
Vehicle Donations
Frequent Flyer Miles
Follow Us Online
Matching Gifts
More than 70 percent of all wishes granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation involve travel. Fortunately, most major airlines have created programs that allow members of their frequent traveler loyalty programs to donate their unused miles to charity. Such contributions have enabled the Make-A-Wish Foundation to send children with life-threatening medical conditions and their families on the trip of a lifetime, and have saved the Foundation thousands of dollars each year.
You can help grant wishes to Utah children by donating your vehicle. Wheels For Wishes will make the process quick and easy, so donate your car, truck, motorcycle, SUV, RV or boat today.
Visit http://utah.wheelsforwishes.org/ or call 1-855-417-WISH to get started.
By joining our Wish Web, you will receive periodic e-mail updates regarding wish needs, upcoming events, and other updates. Examples of types of requests made through the Wish Web include Harry Potter themed books, candy, a gently used vacuum and more.
Some companies match their employees’ donations dollar-for-dollar, helping us grant even more wishes through your generous donations. So before you make a donation, be sure to check with your employer to see if you can make your donation go even farther!
You can find more information on any of these opportunities to make a difference by visiting utah.wish.org and clicking on “Ways To Help”.
When we asked Elena who she wanted to meet she said, “Aurora”, to go, “see a real castle”, and to be, “a princess”. It was no surprise when Elena made her wish official by deciding on a trip to Florida to
meet the real princesses.

Galaxy of Wishes
On June 25th, over 70 of Utah’s toughest, wackiest competitors challenged their mind, body and senses in celebration of the inaugural year of Urban Challenge Utah! Starting at the Gallivan Center, teams navigated through Downtown, competing in challenges ranging from a bucket brigade, answering trivia questions, surviving a grueling boot camp challenge and much more! Teams celebrated afterward at the Gallivan Center with live music and delicious food. Special thanks to our sponsors: Shamrock Plumbing, Bootcamp with Jess, Café Rio, Citadel Broadcasting, Utah Grizzlies, Thomas Arts and Smashburger; event chair Geoff Linville and the Urban Challenge Committee and all our fearless competitors!
April 9th was an out-of-this-world evening as we celebrated our Galaxy of Wishes gala at Clark Planetarium. Guests, dressed in their best “galaxy glam” attire, spent the evening dining on a variety of gourmet food from LeCroissant, bidding on outstanding auction items, and mingling with Star Wars characters. Following dinner, our guests were treated to a wish program and live auction, featuring special guest Senator and astronaut Jake Garn, and some pretty cute wish kids. Special thanks to our sponsors, Codale Electric, LeCroissant, Barrick North America, and Humana; event chairs Terri Drashner and Cheryl Fox; the Galaxy of Wishes committee; and the many volunteers and wish families who made this event such a success!
We celebrated 23 years of the Rubber Ducky Derby on August 20th at the Lindon Aquatics Center. All summer long, community members sponsored duckies for $6 to raise money to grant wishes. Emcee Allen Handy of KBER 101.1 kicked off the event, and spectators cheered on the over 10,000 duckies that raced around the lazy river that day. Lucky ducky Nick Corral was the sponsor of the winning ducky, taking home a $15,000 credit toward a car from Mark Miller Toyota! Wish families had a great day enjoying the water park and a delicious lunch from Chick-Fil-A. Special thanks to our sponsors: Mark Miller Auto Group, the Lindon Aquatics Center and Chick-Fil-A; event chair Doug Long, the Rubber Ducky Derby committee, and all our volunteers and wish families!

Volunteer Spotlights Tara Schofield-Wish GranterTara has enthusiastically jumped into the role of wish granter since being trained in March. She has volunteered for six different wishes since becoming a wish granter, two of which were rush wishes. She expresses creativity and enthusiasm when working with wish families, and she truly makes each wish a magical experience. She is a great addition to the Make-A-Wish volunteer family.
Lezlie Barber- Wish GranterLezlie is an absolute dream to work with as a wish granter. She comes up with new, fun ideas every time she has a new wish! She makes genuine connections with her wish families, and she makes the wish experience very special for them. She has an extremely giving heart and always wants to find more ways to give to her wish families and to Make-A-Wish. We love working with her as a volunteer.
Brenda Burr– Wish AmbassadorBrenda is always willing to help with our Utah County Cookies With Santa party, but her true passion for the Foundation lies in motiviating school kids to give back. This year Brenda hosted an assembly at Taylor Elementary and took time off work to sit at a PTA Fair and talk about our Kids For Wish Kids program. She believes in our mission and is one of the key reasons why so many schools in Utah County continue to give back.
Wendy Horton–Wish AssistantWendy has been a volunteer since 2001 and last fall decided to become a Wish Assistant by covering our front desk on Wednesday mornings. She makes sure that every person she encounters gets her full attention and a cheerful countenance. She is pro-active in finding things to do and is always willing to take on projects the staff asks her to complete.

Wish Family Activities
Princess Tea Party: This Spring our little wish princesses were invited to attend a tea party hosted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah and the Distinguished Young Women of Utah. Each princess had her make-up done, donned her prettiest dress and walked a red carpet as her name and the far away land she came from was announced by a dashing young prince. Music played as the princesses danced the day away and had their pictures taken with the princes.
Santa Parties: Over 370 wish family members attended parties with Santa in Salt Lake City, Orem, St. George and Ogden. Families participated in crafts and games and had their picture taken with Old Saint Nick. They each received a stocking full of goodies that had been handmade and donated. These parties are made possible by generous donors in the community as well as our Make-A-Wish volunteers across the state.
Halloween: Our Halloween Trick or
Treat brought out almost 200 creatures
and characters this year. Make-A-Wish
families received tricks or treats from each staff member in our
office. After their bags were full the children enjoyed games and activities hosted by
students from BYU as well as employees of the
Banana Republic store in Orem.
Easter Egg Hunt: This year our Easter Egg Hunt moved from Salt Lake City to Ogden. Over 400 wish family members joined us for our hunt in the park courtesy of the Ogden Eccles Dinosaur Park. Thousands of eggs were stuffed and hidden by a past wish child and his Scout troop as an Eagle Scout project. Faces were painted and balloon animals were made. Even the weather held off for us so the Easter Bunny could enjoy the entire day with us and have pictures taken with each child.
Volunteer SpotlightsTori Miller-Wish Magician
Tori has been an outstanding volunteer since the moment she
finished training! Serving on the Rubber Ducky Derby committee
for two years, the Golfing Fore Wishes committee in 2010, and as a sub-committee chair for our new Wish100 event, Tori gives her all
to everything she is involved with! Her passion our mission shows
through everything she does and we are so lucky to have her!
Sue Follett–Wish MagicianSue has been an integral part of building our new Wish100
event from the ground up! As a former Walk for Wishes chair, Sue has been a perfect fit to chair the Logistics sub-
committee for the ride. She has outstanding attention to detail and demonstrates remarkable leadership. Sue is one of those
rare people you can count on to do anything! She is a great
asset to our special events.
Theresa Gelzer- Wish Apprentice
Theresa Gelzer is an outstanding wish apprentice.
She is always on time, and has great energy and excitement about helping
with our wish parties. She walks in the door with a
smile on her face and a lively, happy attitude which makes
our wish families feel right at home. We also appreciate her willingness to save the day by
often taking on assignments at the last minute.
Alexa Burbank–Wish Apprentice
Alexa has shown outstanding performance in helping out at our wish parties. She arrives
early and jumps right in to help with decorating, setup,
welcoming family members or whatever needs to be done. She is kind to our wish families, makes
them feel comfortable and attends to any needs there are throughout
the party. She also served on the Urban Challenge Utah committee.
Recent External EventsParade of HomesOnce again this year, the Salt Lake Home Builders Association helped raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation through the SL Parade of Homes. $7,050 was raised through
this event. In addition, six participating builders voluntarily designed rooms in honor of wishes that were granted by the Foundation, helping raise awareness for the Foundation. Special thanks to KSL for making this all possible.
Utah BusinessThrough the generosity of a board donor, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah was featured in a special insert in the September edition of Utah Business Magazine. The insert highlighted the mission of the Foundation, companies who support the Foundation in various ways, and listed ways that companies can get involved.

Go Big or Go Home!School is in session and we’re gearing up to grant more wishes than ever before. But we can’t do it without your help! Last year, 28 school and youth groups from across the state raised $103,000 for wish kids, making more than 20 wishes come true. This year we don’t want to stop at the $100K
mark; we want to raise enough money to grant 25 wishes during the coming school year!
In the sake of sticking with school spirit, we plan to ‘Go Big, or Go Home!’ But we can’t do it without your help. Kids For Wish Kids is a program that encourages children to help those closest to them: classmates, friends, or other kids in the community facing life-threatening medical conditions. With the support of teachers, advisors, and staff, students raise funds in their schools or communities. To find out how you can take part in this philanthropical effort, call (801) 262-WISH.

DisneyHand Disney® is proud to be a long-time supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and uses its magic to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Over the past 30 years, Disney has supported the Make-A-Wish mission, contributing more than $7 million in cash and in-kind donations each year. With more than 7,000 wishes granted every year – including visits to the Disney Parks, Disney Cruises, meeting Disney Characters, attending sporting events and visiting TV and movie sets – Disney-themed wishes continue to be the most popular requests by children to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Join the Legacy of Wishes Society and Grant Wishes into the Future The Make-A-Wish Foundation is doing more than just granting the wishes of today’s seriously ill children: It’s preparing to bring joy to future generations when they need it most. You can be part of this effort by including the Foundation in your estate. By naming the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah as a beneficiary, you will leave a legacy that brings hope, strength and joy to children facing life-threatening medical conditions.
Typical bequest language is:
“I give the sum of $_____(or % of estate) to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah, 771 East Winchester, Murray, Utah 84107, to be used or disposed of as its Board of Directors deems appropriate in its sole discretion.”
Each year, 25,000 children are diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. Our goal is to grant the wish of each eligible child, and your help is essential. If you’ve already named Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah in your estate plans, we’d like to recognize your gift through our Legacy of Wishes Society. By joining, we are able to recognize your generosity today. Go to http://www.utah.wish.org/ways-to-help/donate/monetary-donations/planned-giving/ to join the society or to learn more about the many planned giving vehicles available. If you prefer to speak to someone directly, call Katherine Fife, Director of Marketing and Development, at (801)262-9474 or e-mail her at [email protected].
Thank you for all you have done to share the power of a wish®.

We want to leave a legacy.
Even without children of our own, our lives are full. We work hard. We travel. We volunteer. And even though retirement is still years away for us, we’ve already made a meaningful gift to the Make-A-Wish Foundation through our will. We know our decision will bring hope, strength and joy to the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions and the families who love them. We’re now part of a family that enfolds the world - the Make-A-Wish family. It feels wonderful.
Special thanks to theWe Promise Foundation, the
charitable arm of HeritageWest Credit Union and SouthWest
Community Credit Union who have recently given generous
donations totaling $125,000 to help make wishes come true in Utah. We are truly grateful for
your support!
