Masterclasses Apply the techniques and interpretive ideas discussed at your lesson to the masterclass stage, where you will receive constructive feedback from expert faculty and supportive colleagues. Musical Building BlocksMusical Building Blocks establishes the core foundational elements of music - rhythm, pitch, melody and harmony - by utilizing the two most proven methodologies for music education: Orff and Kodaly. Both learning methods provide a solid platform for future success when studying an instrument.

ORFFOrff provides students with a progressive method for developing musical skill activities centred on song, movement and speech patterns. Rhythmic and melodic awareness is enhanced through hands-on exercises involving percussion instruments and recorders.

KODALYChildren learn to recognize melodic and harmonic relationships through their experience with simple folk material, songs and games. Hand signs are used as a visual aid to help establish pitch, interval recognition and independent part-singing.

LEARNING MANDARIN THROUGH MUSICFun-filled music and language games will introduce essential Mandarin language skills by speaking in correct tones, recognizing graphic symbols and analyzing speech patterns in a class that incorporates rhythm, song, expressive movement and instrument playing.

Suzuki ProgramBased on the belief that children learn a musical instrument as naturally as they learn to speak, the Suzuki method is widely accepted as one of the most effective forms of music instruction. VAM was one of the first North American institutions to incorporate Suzuki and has since been recognized as a global leader in the teaching method. Parents are required to participate in the learning experience by attending lessons and group classes and reinforcing the learning points with daily home practice.

Orchestral Training ProgramPerforming in a symphony orchestra is an exhilarating experience that teaches young musicians essential life-skills such as communication, respect and working together as a team. VAM’s Orchestral Training Program is comprised of 4 levels of training that strike a balance between excellence and enjoyment. All four levels of VAM’s Orchestral Training Program perform at Koerner Recital Hall and the Orpheum Theatre.

Placement auditions are scheduled in June and September and are free of charge. Audition requirements for VAM’s Orchestral Training Program consist of a major and minor scale, sight-reading and a piece of the candidate’s choice. To schedule an audition please email: [email protected].

VAM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAInstructors: Leslie Dala (Conductor); members of the Koerner Quartet (Strings); Mark McGregor (Winds); Alexander Cannon (Brass); Martin Fisk (Percussion)Recommended for: Ages 14+, Suzuki bk 7+ / RCM 8+ (audition required)Class Time: Fridays, 4:30-7:00pmSemester Fee: VAM Private Lesson Rate $150. Stand-alone $300Class Description: VAMSO performs four times a year at the Orpheum Theatre, performing seminal masterpieces from symphonic repertoire in frequent collaboration with the Vancouver Bach Choir. Recent repertoire has included Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, Holst’s ‘The Planets’ and Mozart’s Requiem.

PRIVATE LESSONSLessons are offered:• During the full academic year (36 weeks)• Private lessons are scheduled at the mutual convenience of the teacher and student• A trial lesson may scheduled based on the hourly lesson fee rates

LESSON ATTENDANCE Student Absences: The student should inform the Registrar at the time of registration regarding planned absences such as vacation so that the number of lessons can be adjusted at the time of registration. Once a student has committed to a specific number of lessons, the instructor reserves these times for the student. Missed lessons by the student will only be made up under special circumstances at the discretion of the teacher.

Instructor Absences: If an instructor is absent, every effort will be made to reschedule the lesson at a time that is suitable for both the instructor and student. If the instructor is unable to make up a lesson, the student will receive a refund or credit to be applied to future lessons or classes.

HOLIDAYS AND CLOSURESPlease check VAM’s online calendar for important information on holidays and other important dates.

CHANGING INSTRUCTORSIt is highly recommended that students do not change instructors during the middle of a term. In such cases, approval must be granted by the Executive Director before any transfer can be made.

WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDSNo refunds will be issued after the fourth week of class instruction or the ninth week of private instruction. To withdraw from private lessons, two weeks’ notice is required to both the instructor and the registrar.If a student’s behaviour is deemed consistently disruptive to a class, the instructor will have right to deny entry into the class after consultation with the parents.
